Editor's Notes
Several theories have been presented regarding the tribulation spoken of in the New Testament.
One popular suggestion calls for 7 years of tribulation and plagues just after a “secret rapture,”
in which the saints are taken to heaven, and prior to the millennium.
After the 7 years of tribulation those who repent are also given eternal life.
This theory is based on misinterpretations of Daniel’s seventy week prophecy and Jesus’ teaching regarding His second coming to gather His saints.
In this study we will examine what the Bible teaches about tribulation and Revelation’s prophecy of the seven plagues that fall upon the earth.
Our subject tonight is: Tribulation and the Seven Last Plagues

The word “tribulation” comes from the Greek word “thlipsis” which literally means “pressure.”
(click to fly in words) It is also translated “affliction, anguish, persecution and trouble.”

This period of tribulation Jesus warned of has already occurred, since the signs spoken of in verse 29 have already happened. (See the study guide “Signs That Give Hope”).
God’s people have suffered persecution and tribulation throughout earth’s history, even as far back as Abel. (See Genesis chapter 4).
In fact, “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (2 Timothy 3:12) Today and in the future we will have trials and tribulation that will test our faith.

This time must be just before Christ returns to claim His kingdom. He has been seated at the right hand of God, interceding as our High Priest,
and now He stands up and exchanges His priestly robes for the royal garments of a King.

The theory of a seven year tribulation, tied in with the seven plagues between a secret rapture and the millennium period, is not founded on solid theology.
(click to fly in the following words) It is not consistent with the manner of Christ’s second coming, the application of the 70 week prophecy of Daniel 9, or the pouring out of the seven plagues.
The 70 week prophecy is part of the greater period of time in the 2300 day prophecy.
The beginning date for these prophecies is 457 B.C., the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem.
The 70 weeks are divided into 3 segments: 7 weeks, 62 weeks, and 1 week.
The prophecy states that it would be 69 weeks until the anointing of the Messiah.
This happened in 27 A.D.
at the baptism of Jesus.
After the 7 and 62 weeks (69 in total) the Messiah would be “cut off,” literally “suffer the death penalty.”
Daniel 9:27 says, “In the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and suffering.”
Jesus was crucified three and one half years after His baptism in the spring of the year 31 A.D., in the middle of the final week of the seventy weeks.
Then the sacrificial system, which was given to point sinners to the true sacrifice, Jesus, came to an end.
Three and one half years later, 34 A.D., the final week of the 70 week prophecy ended.
It is the last week of this prophecy that some try to attribute to a seven year tribulation that will happen in earth’s end time.

The plagues are called “the wrath of God.” Those who accept the worship of the beast and receive his mark will suffer God’s wrath in the seven plagues. (For more information on the mark of the beast see the study guide “666: The Number Nobody Wants.”)

God’s people are called out of Babylon to avoid the plagues that will fall upon it. Babylon represents false forms of worship.
Those who remain in Babylon will receive the plagues, the “wrath of God.” (For more information on Babylon, see the study guide “Revelation’s Tale of Two Women.”)

Jesus indicated that His followers would face pressure, persecution, trials or tribulation in the world. These things would help to fit them for eternal life in His kingdom.

Although they would be alive on earth when the seven plagues are poured out, they are protected from them by His mighty hand;
just as the Children of Israel were protected from the plagues that fell on Egypt (see Exodus chapters 7-12).
The seven plagues are the wrath of God which falls on the wicked, not the righteous. There is no redemptive action in the wrath of God. The seven plagues are not discipline designed to cause men to repent.
