“I am a curious,
polite person, motivated to
work the right way”
Age: 25-35
Work: Researcher
Role: Sleep expert
Family: Engaged
Location: Milan, Italy
Character: Sincere,
Determinate, Precise
Tasks and tools
I use questionnaires and sleep diaries
such as the Morningness-Eveningness
Questionnaire for understanding the
circadian biorhythm of the participants,
and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index
for assessing the quality of sleep during
an entire month.
I also use sensor data acquired via
actigraphs or environmental sensors in
order to understand the impact of the
context in which a person sleeps.
Technology
Smartphone and apps
They can be very useful, but many apps
are of little practical value
Wearable devices
I like Garmin’s, the other’s way less.
Pen and paper
Definitely old but sometimes essential
and gold
Bio
I have studied Sport Science for Health and obtained my PhD in
this field. I have studied biological rhythms in sport performance.
I am also a strength and conditioning catch of professional
American football, soccer and ski. I got involved with this
amazing project, the NECSTCamp, to take care of the sleep
aspects of students that are enduring high stress levels.
Frustrations
• Sometimes it’s hard for me to work in a group
• Some aspects of the expert’s collaboration confuses me
• I feel like the NECSTCamp project’s scope is confusing at
times
• I would really like we could afford to use actigraphs for the
NECSTCamp
Focus
Goals
• Doing my part to educate people about healthy sleep habits
• Finding better data for research on sleep and biorhythm

“The NECSTCamp is a
fundamental piece in my life”
Age: 35-45
Work: Engineer, Coach
Role: Coach
Family: Married
Location: Milan, Italy
Character: Loyal, Sincere, Fair
Tasks and tools
As a coach I try my best to keep the
team together. I allocate the participants
uniformly on the different classes, given
their preferences, and redistribute them
in case of exceptional situations. I
define the schedule of the classes and
keep the diary of every workout,
together with who was and wasn’t
present. I post the call for the class on
Facebook, where the participants must
comment if they want to join the class. I
post also the workout description and
collect the participants results in the
comments, which I transfer into a
spreadsheet. I share inspirational posts
and answer direct questions from the
participants.
Technology
Smartphone and apps
Super convenient.
Wearable devices
I’ve a Garmin Fenix 5; couldn’t go
without it. Pen and paper
They’re an evergreen, but there are
better tools for collecting and querying
data.
Bio
I have studied engineering at university but have always been
professionally involved in martial arts and sport in general since I
was in high school. I have fused the two field in continuously
researching and understanding the inner workings of sports and
fitness in increasing people’s self-consciousness. I joined the
NECSTCamp project since the beginning, and I still feel excited in
trying my best to make it better everyday.
Frustrations
• I have to do a lot of manual tasks, like rebalancing classes.
• Having to remember a lot of people faces and associate them
with their unique profile.
• Keeping track of results for the participant, over time, in
different groups.
Resilience
Goals
• Giving 1-to-1 feedback targeted at each participant’s special
case
• Understanding the person, not only his or her performance
• Guiding the participants in the NECSTCamp program in
reaching a better awareness and consciousness

Age: 25-35
Work: Nutritionist
Role: Nutrition advisor
Family: In a relationship
Location: Milan, Italy
Character: Passionate,
Practical
Tasks and tools
I follow personally the participants in the
NECSTCamp to analyse, understand
and adopt healthy nutrition habits. I
devise “nutrition paths” for increasing
the participants’ awareness about their
own habits. I use food diaries,
transferred into spreadsheets; track
weight and height with traditional a
scale and stadiometer and measure
body circumferences with a standard
tape meter. I also speak in seminars
about nutrition education.
Technology
Smartphone and apps
Convenient and useful.
Wearable devices
The can be supporting devices, but
they’re not necessary in my opinion.
Pen and paper
Still essential (nowadays, at least)
Bio
I’ve obtained my MSc in Human Nutrition after my BSc in Food
Service Science and Management. Then, I’ve opened my studio
and collaborated with many companies to increase their
associates’ awareness about nutrition. An important moment
where I perceived the value of the NECSTCamp program was
when a participant I’d followed told me that she’d failed many
times before in sticking to lots of different diets and finally
managed to follow the one we’ve devised together thanks to its
flexible approach aimed at increasing self-awareness.
Frustrations
•
Communicating and spreading the word about activities is
cumbersome.
•
Sometimes we diverge too much in team meetings.
•
I feel the lack of more practical decisions on how to
continuously enhance the NECSTCamp program.
Sharing
Goals
•
Extending people’s awareness about their lifestyle, especially
focusing on healthy nutritions habits.Autonomy

“It’s a pleasure to bring food
education to young men and
women in such a critical
moment for their personality”
Age: 18-25
Work: Dietarian
Role: Nutrition advisor
Family: In a relationship
Location: Milan, Italy
Character: Positive, Cheerful,
Calm
Tasks and tools
I take care of personal interviews with
NECSTCamp participants. Track their
height and weight with traditional
stadiometers and scales, plus a tape
meter for measuring body
circumferences. I also use the results
about food habits using the CREA
questionnaire.
Finally, I hold seminars about food
habits and education with slideshows at
support.
Technology
Smartphone and apps
They are very useful in our daily life.
Wearable devices
May be useful, but I’m
not into any of
them.
Pen and paper
These are useful too, if you don’t have a
computer in reach ;)
Bio
I’ve graduated in Dietetics and I have always been into healthy
food habits. I have joined the NECSTCamp program
in order to
spread the message among students that it is possible to have a
virtuous relation with food that is not far from
their lifestyle,
spurring them
build healthy habits they can feel their own and
from
which they can benefit in the long term.
Frustrations
•
Having a constant presence on the NECSTCamp’s social
channels is not my cup of tea.
•
Analysing the big data volumes at the end of a period is
complicated without proper tools.
•
Manually handling data collection is error prone and tedious.
Innovation
Goals
•
Instil food education in university students since they are still
in the process of shaping their personality.
•
Finding ways for the NECSTCamp participants to reach
harmony with their nutrition habits.
•
Discovering innovative way to support research in the nutrition
fields thanks to clever data handling.
•
Holding cooking laboratories with the participants.
