2. NARRATIVE- THEORY
In 1969, Todorov produced a theory which he believed to be able to be applied
to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative pattern. They
all went through stages called the equilibrium, disequilibrium,
acknowledgement, solving and again equilibrium.
There are five stages the narrative can progress through: A state of equilibrium,
where everything is as it should be, next, a situation in which disrupts the
event of the order. Then, there’s a realisation that the disorder has occurred
followed by an attempt to repair the damage of the disruption. Lastly, there is
a return or restoration of a new equilibrium. As an example, I’ve used Taylor
Swifts ‘Love Story’ music video as an example. The first is the equilibrium
where the scenes content and Taylor dreams of her prince charming, next is an
event which disrupts her happy thoughts of her prince charming ever returning
to her. Then, issues of the disruption have been recognised by the characters.
Stage 4, her crush comes back to her and proposes which is then the solving of
the disorientation and have reached a new equilibrium.
