As a noun it means – more than enough.
He smokes to excess.
In an excess of enthusiasm I agreed to work late.
As an adjective it means – in addition to an amount of
that is necessary, generally used before a noun.
Excess food is stored as fat.
Driving with excess alcohol in the blood is a serious
offence.
