2. Why is PDHPE so important? PDHPE is a subject that encompasses all aspects of an individual’s wellbeing, inclusive of social, mental, physical and spiritual health. Yet despite this, it is one of the most important subjects with the least emphasis in the classroom, as opposed to English and Mathematics.
3. It is important that students are encouraged to understand their own growth and development within the context of their families and communities. The active participation of parents and students in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs will assist exploration of different aspects of health as they are understood within different communities and to place teaching and learning in a context that is meaningful and valued by students.
4. When students understand and value others, they work more cooperatively in teams and enjoy more stable and satisfying interpersonal relationships. They are also more tolerant and caring members of the community who value difference and respond to others as individuals. Students should be physically active every day in as many ways as they can. Health experts agree that all people should accumulate 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day for health benefits. It is also generally agreed that, in addition, children should engage in more vigorous activity of at least 20 minutes at least 3 times per week.
5. Young students need clear guidance concerning appropriate health attitudes and behaviours. As students mature they require assistance in discerning between conflicting messages from a range of sources. An understanding of health issues empowers students to make appropriate decisions and commit to adopting sound community values. Teaching PDHPE in schools as a priority will provide students with the opportunities to grasp these concepts and implement them in their everyday lives.
