5. What is Ethernet ?
Ethernet is the most widely-installed local area network ( LAN) technology.
An Ethernet LAN typically uses coaxial cable or twisted pair wires.
Speed 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps.
Ethernet use (CSMA/CD ) for transmission of data.
CD mean Collision Detection
CSMA mean Carrier Sense Multiple Access
6.
Ethernet was originally developed in 1976
It was developed by Xerox PARC
The idea was first documented in 1973
It was patented in 1975
7. Ethernet Generations
Ethernet has gone through 4 generations
1.
STANDARD EHTERNET
2.
FAST ETHERNET
3.
GIGABIT ETHERNET
4.
10 GIGABIT ETHERNET
8.
10BASE5: THICK ETHERNET(10 Mbps/500m)
10BASE2: THIN ETHERNET(10 Mbps/185m)
The only difference is that cable is thinner and more flexible
10BASET: TWISTED PAIR(10 Mbps/100m)
It uses a bus topology with an external transmitter/receivers
It uses a star topology and uses a twisted pair cable
10BASEF: FIBER EHERNET(10 Mbps/2000m)
It also uses a star topology but it uses a fiber optic cable
9.
10.
11. Fast Ethernet
It also called 100BASE-T using the same media and topology as Ethernet.
Upgrade the data rate to 100Mbps.
Maximum length 100m.
This type of network commonly uses Cat 5.
A new standard is called Cat 6.
General difference b/w Cat 5 & Cat 6 is
transmission performance.
12. Types of Fast Ethernet
There are two types of fast Ethernet
(a)100Base-TX
100Base-TX
(b)100Base-FX
(1) it uses two twisted pair cable(Cat 5)
(2) This creates the data rate of 125Mbps
100Base-FX
(1) It uses two pair of fiber-optic cables
(2) This creates the 100 to 125 Mbps
(3) A new standard is called 100Base-T4
13. GigaBit Ethernet
Upgrade the data rate to 1Gbps
Make it compatible with standard or Fast Ethernet
It has same technology that was created in 1970s.
Maximum length of 1000Base-LX is 5000m
Maximum length of 1000Base-T is 100m
14. Types of Gigabit Ethernet
(1) 1000Base-SX or 1000Base-L(550m,5000m)
Both uses the two wire implementation use fiber-optic cable
(2) 1000Base-T(100m)
4 wire implementation
Gigabit Ethernet
implementation
1000Base-LX
1000Base-LX
1000Base-CX
1000Base-T
15. 10 GigaBit Ethernet
Upgrade the data rate to 10 Gbps
Use same frame format
Keep the same minimum and maximum frame length
Make ethernet compatible with ATM
16. Types of 10-Gigabit Ethernet
(1)10GBase-S
(a) maximum length 300m
(b)short wave media technology is used
(2)10GBase-L
(a)maximum length 10Km
(b) long wave media technology is used
(3) 10GBase-E
(a)maximum length 40Km
(b) extended media technology is used
17. Token Ring
What is token ring ?
(a) A local area network in which a node can only transmit when
possession of a sequence of bits (the token), which is passed to
each node in turn.
Token ring use a ring topology to send from one machine to another.
Token ring operated at 4 or 16 Mbps.
Token ring networks are vary rare because of cost.
18. Working of Token Ring
Token Ring transmits an electric token(small set of data) to each node of the
network.
Computer copy the data in Token and set the address where the dada is send.
Token goes to every computer.
Computer save the data and send acknowledgment to sending computer.
19. Fiber Distributed Data Interface(FDDI)
What is FDDI ?
FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) is a set
of ANSI and ISO standards for data transmission
fiber optic lines in a local area network (LAN).
It use to connect two or more LAN’S often over long distance.
It also use to make physical topology with dual rings.
A router or a switch is used to for linking an FDDI.
20. FDDI has the following Characteristics
Fiber optic is the cable used.
Token passing is its media accessing method.
100 Mbps speed.
100 Km is the maximum length of the network.
500 is the maximum number of nodes on the network.
21. Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM)
Atm is a high-speed networking standard designed to support both voice
and data communications.
ATM has capability to transferring of data at a speed of 155 Mbps or more.
Data is transfer in the form of packets of fixed size.
Various types of media are supported eg(CD quality audio , video & Imaging)
ATM use Star topology , which has advantage working with both twisted or
fiber optic cables.
Two or more LAN are connected by ATM.
