• There are three types of industries;
Primary industries.
Secondary industries
Tertiary industries
5. Primary industries
• An industry involved in the extraction
and collection of natural resources, such
as copper and timber, as well as by activities such
as farming and fishing. A company in a primary
industry can also be involved in turning
natural resources into products.
• Primary industry tends to make up a larger
portion of the economy of developing
countries than they do for developed countries
8. Secondary/manufacturing industry
• The industrial sector of an economy that is dominated
by the manufacture of finished products.
• Unlike a primary industry, which collects
and produces raw materials for manufacture, a
secondary industry makes products that are more likely
to be consumed by individuals. Examples of secondary
industries include car assembly, steel production and b
uilding and construction.
• It may involve assembling various parts into a finished
product.
11. Tertiary industry
• The tertiary sector of the economy (also
known as the service sector or the service
industry) is one of the three
economic sectors.
• This gives services to the people and include
education,banking,insurance,health,entertai
nment.
• In this industry no goods are produced.
14. Choosing the best site for an industry
There are several factors that t-o be considered
while setting up an industry.These include;
Labour; this is availability of both skilled and
unskilled labour.
Power(energy).This should be available to power
the machines.
Availability of raw materials and their bulkiness.
Industries are located near the source of raw
materials especially if they are heavy to minimize
on costs.

Transport; there should be reliable transport
network to transport raw materials to the
factory and finished products to the market.
Market; any industry should be located near
the market for its products to minimize on
transportation costs.
Availability of land. Land should be available
to provide site for the industry.
16. Best location for a textile mills
Textile industries are always the first industries
to develop in any country.
In Britain important textile areas were East
Anglia and the Cotswolds.
Later the industry moved to Yorkshire and
Lancashire .
Yorkshire became important for woolen textiles
and Lancashire for cotton textiles.

• Factors that determined the location of woolen
industries in Yorkshire included;
• There was a lot of rain in this region which
created rivers whose water was used to power
the machines, this was later replaced by coal
before electric power was developed.
• Raw materials were easily available. Sheep farms
are located in this region.
• Availability of flat land for industry location.
• Market ,this area had a high population which
offers a ready market as well as source of labour.
