WordSift as a data-driven learning tool. Activity 4 is a vocabulary activity to identify and become familiar with vocabulary in a specific genre using the tools: tag cloud, word visualization, images and terms in context. There are 10 activities in this series.

Data-Driven Learning Activity: Identify genre vocabulary
Purpose: to determine vocabulary of a genre (sports, geography, math, news,…)
Outcomes: Vocabulary activity to identify key words of a genre
Try it
1. Open Wordsift (https://wordsift.org)
2. Type a key word(s) into the Article from Wikipedia text box (example: ice hockey)
3. Click on one of the options that appears in the drop down list.
4. If the result has more than 10,000 words, scroll to the bottom and remove
paragraphs until the word count is less than 10,000.
5. Click on the SIFT button
6. A word cloud appears
7. Choose the Cloud Settings button

8. Change the Maximum number of words to the number that the teacher provides
(example: 12)
9. Press the ENTER key
10. The word cloud will change
11. Click on the Sort Words button, choose A  Z
12. Use this list to create a Genre word list, click on the first word in the list
13. Use the Wordsift tools *(WordNet, Images/videos, in context) to make a definition
14. Write down your definitions for each key word
15. Repeat this for all of the words in the word cloud list
16. Share this list and definitions with your classmates
