Understanding our personal biases and acknowledging our own intersecting identities is a powerful tool in the counseling world. Through exploring
the four developmental domains laid out by the multicultural and social justice counseling competencies (MSJCC) counselors are able to better
identify their own identities and those of their clients resulting in a stronger client counselor relationship. The word privilege has become a hot
button on social media platforms in recent years. It is my personal opinion that when people are offended by having the word privilege put upon
them it is actually a result of their own privilege. As a white female who grew up in a predominantly white city it was once my privilege to be
ignorant about racism. It wasn't that I didn't identify color it was that I did not have to acknowledge that racism even existed. I did not understand what a
minority group was.
I became aware of different minority groups when I left home in my 20's and joined the military. I will never forget being asked where I was from and
hearing the response to my answer "wow, so you've never seen a black person before". I did not know how to respond in that moment so I said
nothing. As I progressed through my military training I became the minority. I can recall a time when my belongings were thrown into the hall and
while confronting the people who had done it they made it clear that it was because of the color of my skin. This life experience had a profound

Multicultural Reflection
In elementary school, middle school and in high school, I found myself questioning a lot of the material that was being taught. There were many
instances, where I felt like I did not belong and I did not find myself engaged in the material being taught. In my primary years, most of the lessons
that were taught to me were not multicultural, but Eurocentric. I found myself not learning a lot of the material that was taught. However, there is
one positive experience that I had when I was in grade three. My grade three teacher read the book "Whoever You Are" by Mem Fox, which sent
out a very strong message that we are all part of the same world. The book illustrates differences such as people may be different than you, live in
different places, speak different languages and go to different schools. My teacher got us to do an activity sheet where she asked us where we
were born and if we spoke multiple languages. I remember being one of the only students' in the whole entire class who had parents who
immigrated from Pakistan and one of the only students' who spoke different languages. I remember my teacher formed a tally chart on the board
and created a bar graph with everyone's background and the languages they spoke. Being one of the only students with a different background and
language I could share my family background. To further push our thinking my grade three teacher put us in pairs and told us to come up with other
questions we would ask someone to get to know them more. This activity taught me and my classmates how as humans we are all the same, but
unique in our own ways. This was a positive experience for me because I could find myself in the lesson plan being taught. As mentioned before, I
struggled to find myself in the lessons being taught when I was in my primary and junior years. Therefore, this positive experience was very different
from other moments in my learning, which were mostly negative. McCarthy (2015) argues that children and teens need the curriculum to be presented
in a meaningful way. For example, showing real–world relationships in lessons, but also allowing students to think about their own reality. My grade

While I believe that this multicultural class is great class for future counselors I also believe this class would be good for everybody to take in
general no matter of what field of study you are going into. This multicultural class was one of my favorite classes that I have ever taken at
Gardner Webb University because of how it challenges the way you think about certain issues and how it makes you look at you bias that you
never knew you even had. While in my past I never really looked at cultural differences when it came to why certain people acted differently than
others and why others reacted differently to similar situations. I believe that my eyes began to open when we watched the movie Color of fear. It
was very eye opening to me how biases that we never thought we had can be brought to life and a setting with different types of nationalities. For
me this video made me revaluate how I saw the world and how maybe there are biases in my own life I need to evaluate to become a better
counselor and a better person. Today when I am at home and I hear my father say a comment that at one time I would be okay with but now I may
feel the comment he said was bias remark or even racial remark. By being able to recognize the bias remarks and even racial remarks that at one time
I never paid any attention, has made me feel like I am working in the right direction to overcoming the biases that I once held. The most significant
thing that I have learned about building cross–cultural relationships is being aware of differences in different cultures. The best way to achieve
cross–cultural relationships is to educate yourself on differences in different cultures by going to a seminar or conference that talks about cross–
cultural relationships. This information that I have learn from Dr. Sue book "Counseling the culturally diverse: theory and practice" can be very useful
for myself moving forward in my field of study but also it can be very useful for me being able to teach others of the importance of being culturally

I remember being one of the only students' in the whole entire class who had parents who immigrated from Pakistan and one of the only students' who spoke different languages. I remember my teacher formed a tally chart on the board and created a bar graph with everyone's background and the languages they spoke. Being one of the only students with a different background and language I could share my family background. To further push our thinking my grade three teacher put us in pairs and told us to come up with other questions we would ask someone to get to know them more. This activity taught me and my classmates how as humans we are all the same, but unique in our own ways. This was a positive experience for me because I could find myself in the lesson plan being taught. Multicultural Reflection While I believe that this multicultural class is great class for future counselors I also believe this class would be good for everybody to take in general no matter of what field of study you are going into. This multicultural class was one of my favorite classes that I have ever taken at Gardner Webb University because of how it challenges the way you think about certain issues and how it makes you look at you bias that you never knew you even had. While in my past I never really looked at cultural differences when it came to why certain people acted differently than others and why others reacted differently to similar situations. I believe that my eyes began to open when we watched the movie Color of fear. It was very eye opening to me how biases that we never thought we had can be brought to life and a setting with different types of nationalities. For me this video made me revaluate how I saw the world and how maybe there are biases in my own life I need to evaluate to become a better counselor and a better person. Today when I am at home and I hear my father say a comment that at one time I would be okay with but now I may feel the comment he said was bias remark or even racial remark. By being able to recognize the bias remarks and even racial remarks that at one time I never paid any attention, has made me feel like I am working in the right direction to overcoming the biases that I once held. The most significant thing that I have learned about building cross–cultural relationships is being aware of differences in different cultures. The best way to achieve cross–cultural relationships is to educate yourself on differences in different cultures by going to a seminar or conference that talks about cross– cultural relationships.
