Causes Of The Green Revolution
The Green Revolution occurred around the 1940s, this was right after WWII had ended so many
countries were not doing so well economically and this affected their agricultural abilities. During
this time new technologies, to speed up the process of growing food, were introduced. Things such
as fertilizers, pesticides, and modern irrigation systems were implementing into farming around the
world. The Green Revolution was caused by the lack of enough food to support the growing global
population , particularly in less developed countries, and the threat that this posed on the
surrounding more prosperous countries. It yielded results, helping to feed many starving people in
the world, but consequently it appeared to ruin some farmlands. Natural farming in years to come
and negatively affected certain groups of people.
The green revolution was caused, for the most part, by the lack of a substantial food supply for the
world population. As Dr. Norman Borlaug said, there were billions of people in the world who were
constantly plagued with hunger. They did not have the proper conditions or nutrient rich soil that are
necessary for growing enough crops to sustain themselves. Dr. Borlaug was involved in the research
for the Green Revolution, he predicted that unless the methods of the Green Revolution were "fully
implemented", then the results would not suffice, and the starving population would remain hungry.
(Doc 2). President Truman expressed similar sentiments about the world

Essay On Adequate Nutrition
Human beings need to have adequate nutrition to attain normal physical growth (in children) and for
a healthy life. Adequate nutrition is a fundamental right for every human being. If people fail to
consume sufficient quality and quantity of nutrients, they will suffer from hunger or malnutrition.
Malnutrition takes a variety of forms. The main types of malnutrition seen in Nepal are protein–
energy malnutrition, iodine deficiency disorders, iron deficiency anemia and vitamin A deficiency.
In particular malnutrition places an enormous burden on children and women. Even mildly or
moderately malnourished children and women are more likely to be at high risk of death due to lack
of resistance against common infectious diseases. The above types of malnutrition not only affect
people's health but also affect the quality of life and the development of the socio–economic
situation in the country.1
Good nutrition is a prerequisite for the national development of countries and for the well–being of
individuals. Although problems related to poor nutrition affect the entire population, women and
children are especially vulnerable because of their unique physiology and socioeconomic
characteristics.1
Adequate nutrition is critical to children's growth and development. The period from birth to age
two is especially important for optimal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Socioeconomic status of the family was found most important predictor of underweight and
stunting. Availability of cultivable land and food sufficiency represents how much family is boosted
up to provide sufficient food to their children which shows its effect in long run as children brought
up in poor socioeconomic family were found prone to be stunted and underweight. Furthermore,
children reared in the family with medium socioeconomic status were also found vulnerable to

Poverty And Its Effects On Human Development
My "sustained development goal" is zero hunger.
Most of us cannot imagine finishing our day without a meal, but for a very huge population in the
world, being hungry is part of everyday life. Hunger leads to malnutrition and it has long term
irreversible effect on brain development. Hungry and malnourished child performs poorly
academically and cannot achieve its full potential. Poor brain development and academic
performance leads to poverty. Hungry population cannot escape poverty. Poverty then leads to
further hunger and it is a never–ending conflict. Many children and adults in developing part of the
world are caught in this. Once the population is fed and properly nourished this cycle of hunger and
poverty can be broken. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These factors lead to poor agricultural yield and inadequate food supply to the population. Zambia
has vast agricultural potential. Despite fertile land and ample water availability, the agricultural
potential of Zambia is not fully used. Of 58% suitable land only 14% is currently cultivated. Most of
the agricultural land is cultivated by small farmers whose average land holding is 0.5 to 0.9 hectare.
Small scale farmers make up 85% of the farmer population. Small subsistence farmers are poor and
they do not have enough capital available for investing in modern agricultural technology, fertilizer
and superior quality seed. Due to poor agricultural infrastructure for small subsistence farmers the
average yield of crops is low. Only 0.5 to 1 ton of maize per hectare is produced by these farmers
whereas average maize yield in more evolved agricultural area is 4 tons per hectare. Low yield leads
to food insecurity. A household of 6 people need 1.1 tons' maize per year for food security. If these
subsistence farmers have availability of capital for investing in agricultural infrastructure the yield
can be increased 4 to 8 times leading to food security as well as profit. My Non–Government
organization is "AGRIZAM" which is involved in co–operative farming which helps provide
investment for adequate agricultural infrastructure. With improved infrastructure, the yield will
increase leading not only to curb hunger but also

India Becoming By Akash Kapur
Disha, Kanika and Ayesha's presentation on "India Becoming" by Akash Kapur was a thorough
review of the book. They covered many themes including change, development, modernity, the
culture of violence and by doing so got at the heart of the book, which showed that "India [can]
often feel like two nations." The group discussed some of the negative effects of development in
India, one major one being pollution. According to Kapur, seventy percent of India's surface water is
polluted and half a million deaths a year were attributed to air pollution. This was discussed in
contrast to the positive effects of development that have seen the erosion of the caste system and
allowed women and people of lower castes upward social mobility. The group was able to highlight
some of the effects of development on the people of India. However, many of their arguments were
oversimplified and did not account for the conditions of the majority of Indians. In addition, many
of their arguments lacked conviction because they were not backed by statistics or references from
outside sources that could have corroborated the fieldwork done by Kapur. As such, this review will
highlight some issues excluded by the presenters and argue that though India has developed, it has
been at the cost of ignoring the agrarian sector and a massive rise in starvation and poverty.
When talking about India, one often hears of how fast it is growing, how it is amongst the largest
economies in the world and is often

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) was launched in 1999, making its name as the world's
first leading global benchmark for sustainability. This index consists of the top 10% of the largest
2,500 companies in terms of sustainability. Corporate sustainability is the business approach that
formulates long–term shareholder value by grasping opportunities and controlling risks created from
economic, environmental and social development. Sustainability serves as opportunities and risks
that companies must adjust to and is critical to the creation of long–term shareholder value,
especially in an increasingly resource constrained world. The DJSI has become an effective
engagement platform as it encourages competition among companies for a ... Show more content on

If companies that meet a certain size criteria decide not to participate, RobecoSAM completes the
questionnaire to their fullest extent based on publically available information. The "Assessed
Universe" is created following the results of the CSA questionnaire as a result of companies are
ranked against peers according to their Total Sustainability Score. RobecoSAM then continues to
monitor new coverage of the companies in the universe on a daily basis, whether it is through media
stories, RepRisk, and etc., in order to analyze the company's involvement with the environmental,
social, economic issues that may negatively effect one's reputation and core business. Through
careful observation of the universe, RobecoSAM is able to in decide whether a company's policies,
processes, management systems, and commitments shape into excellent positive performance.
RobecoSAM then has 59 industries roll up into 24 global industry groups so that the top scoring
company from each is included on the DJSI. Not only does RobecoSAM stand as the basis for the
development of the DJSI, but it also provides insights used to conduct empirical in–house research
or is used to measure the impact of corporate sustainability performance on financial performance.

Effectiveness of International Efforts to Ease Problem of...
How effective are the international efforts to ease the problem of global hunger? Global hunger, as
its name suggests, is a global issue that requires the assistance and cooperation of countries,
regardless of nationality, wealth or religion, so as to find an effective solution. Many policies and
efforts, both international and national, have been done, or presently underway to reduce poverty,
which causes hunger. The good cause behind these efforts cannot be denied, however, one may
doubt if the money pumped into them are potent enough to rapidly decrease the rate of hunger in a
short period of time. These efforts have made improvements to alleviate global hunger but more

Otherwise, ignorance of these problems will lead to the downfall of policies and efforts. Third, food
aid given to developing countries by large producers such as U.S. and U.K. harms their economies
and increases dependency of the recipient nations on them if used as a long term solution. Most of
the food aid carried out is program food aid whereby recipient nations purchase food with money
borrowed from donor nations at lower than market interest rates. This will hurt economies of
recipient nations as it promotes domestic interests of donor countries since it disrupts food markets
in recipient countries. Introduction of food aid will cause prices to decrease such that local
producers are unable to make profits at the same prices so sellers may leave the market, leading to a
greater dependency on food aid. Thus, food aid should only be used for relief or project–based
purposes. Instead, donor countries should use funds and resources to create self–sustaining business
and enterprises so that local producers can make profits and ensure the output will meet domestic
demands for food. Fertile lands and natural resources are advantages which developing nations have
and should develop and utilize so as to build a stronger agricultural market. Forth, charity
organizations gives large amounts of money yearly to governments of developing nations to

rarely achieved. Only eleven countries in the world have no violence or major conflict, and these
countries are considered 'peaceful'. In recent years, the deterioration of global peace has become
obvious with 2015 being a bad year for international peace and security. According to the latest
Global Peace Index report, in 2015, the world experienced the highest number of global battle

significant war can be on an individual. Conflict has a large psychological impact on those who have

Examining the Social Indicator of Public Spending on...
A nation is defined not just by geographic borders, it is defined by its citizens. Citizens are shaped
by the goods and services that are available to them. Any governmental service costs money;
therefore a nation's economy – and the spending of that money – works to shape the sociological
core of that nation. But how should that money be spent? One can argue that education spending is
important to a nation's well–being. During the 19th century US President James Garfield
commented that "next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which
neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained" (as cited in McPherson, 1912, p.192).

Not everything in Oman is halcyon; there are pressing environmental issues, mainly the
maintenance of an adequate supply of water for agricultural and domestic use. The fact is that there
is only "1 cubic kilometer of renewable water resources, with 94% used in farming and 2% for
industrial activity [...] and only 30% of all rural dwellers have pure drinking water. Both drought and
limited rainfall contribute to shortages in the nation's water supply".4 As these environmental issues
become more pressing, education spending may falter as money is put towards means of alleviating
a water crisis. Culturally, Oman remains strong. Jones and Ridout (2012) make the case that "the
key features of Omani social life that contribute to the formation of this culture of diplomacy...are
traditions of tolerance and non–sectarianism characteristic of Islam in Oman, the well–documented
prevalence of politeness as a social virtue".5 Now that we've examined the factors which both
influence and are influenced by education spending in Oman, let us turn to Georgia.
In the Eurasian nation of Georgia, total governmental spending on education amounts to 7.7%
(World Bank, 2010). However, I argue that the low amount of this indicator is not out of apathy for
the education of its citizens, rather political unrest is the main factor. After all, the current amount of

purpose of its marketing. From the original iPhone to the latest iPhone 5, it is always difficult to

Although Apple's products gain lots of consumers' recognition of all respects, Apple still need to
expand market share, grow and develop along with the consumer electronics industry.
The emergence of numerous EMS enterprises. China, India, Vietnam and other countries has been
developed into a "world factory". Foxconn, as Apple's assembly companies in China, helps Apple to
optimize the product value chain, reduce costs and maximize the benefits of the two sides.
The emergence of large components manufacturers. With the advances of manufacturing, more and
more components manufacturers have come into our eyes, which make Apple, have more choices to
look for the qualified suppliers. Meanwhile, in order to sign a contract with Apple, there must have
competition between suppliers, which enable Apple to reduce product costs and improve gross
margins.
Innovation is the key. Generally speaking, traditional digital products have occupied the market for a
long time–there are thousands of homogenized digital products. Consumers have already had
serious visual fatigues. But at the same time, Apple did a good job on innovation and grasping
consumers' mentality.

Corporate Strategy : Ford Motor Company Essay
Corporate Strategy
Corporate strategy is primarily about the choice of direction for a firm as a whole and the
management of its business or product portfolio. There are three active strategies that can affect the
overall direction of the company. The company can either expand their current activities, make no
change, or reduce its current activities (Wheelen, Hunger, Hoffman, & Bamford, 2015). Since the
company was first founded in 1909, Ford Motor Company has participated in all three strategies to
varying degrees of success or failure.
The first strategy, expand its current activities, was the groundwork which sets up the success of the
company from the very beginning. Generally, if a company wants to increase their current activities,
it has two ways of accomplishing its goals. The company can grow by increasing its inputs without
the aid of any innovation and technological process or by innovating new processes that increase its
output without any additional inputs (Mihola, Wawrosz, & Kotsovcová, 2015). In the case of Ford
Motor Company, it chose to expand by innovation, particularly through the use of the assembly line.
However, that is not the only time that Ford Motor Company has expanded by innovation. Ford
Motor Company has traditionally operated in three markets, America, Europe, and Asia. So, after
looking at its closest competitors Ford Motor Company decided that in order to expand its
operations, it would have to include other markets as well as its current

Capitalism: The Forefront of Global Economic Success
Arguably the most dominant economic system throughout history, Capitalism is both a political and
commercial structure in which the production as well as management of goods and services are
privately owned and operated in contrast to state or federal government. The origin of this booming
fiscal policy could be attributed to various different factors such as the Industrial Revolution and an
increasing interest in the investment of securities. The spirit of entrepreneurialism and the hunger for
profit has led corporations and businesses [whether big or small] to inadvertently create a system
that would stimulate the creation of wealth on an international scale for those countries who ... Show

The cartoon depicts the mind of a supporter for the OWS (Occupy Wall Street) movement as having
only 1% common sense and 99% emotional outrage on the current status of income equality in
America. While it is common knowledge that the top 1% of income earners in the United States own
approximately 40% of the nation's wealth, the national median income is roughly $52,000 as
opposed to the global median income of $10,000. It appears that the advocates for the Occupy Wall
Street movement are not aware of the benefits of capitalism and are so blinded by the fact that such
a small portion of the nation retains most of its wealth. Based on some of the demands that Occupy
Wall Street rallied for such as free education, guaranteed living wage regardless of employment and
the outlaw of credit reporting agencies, one may argue that these people desired a Marxist or more

Poverty In America
In the past thirty years overall extreme poverty rates have been cut in half, but we can do better.
People who live in extreme poverty have not only a lack of income, but resources as well. Lacking
resources often results in much larger issues such as hunger, limited availability to proper
healthcare, limited access to education, and little to no sanitation facilities meaning less clean water.
Around 767 million people around the world live off less than $2.00 a day which is the international
poverty line; the largest amount of people in poverty live in Sub–Saharan Africa and Southern Asia.
Normally small regions are more affected by poverty and even more likely to suffer if there is
conflict or violence in their country ("Poverty – United Nations Sustainable Development"). Rich
nations suffer from poverty as well; over forty–five million Americans are still stuck below the
poverty line and not many people discuss poverty in our nation and search for solutions the way we
do for people in other countries. Poverty is an issue that affects the entire world, not just small
developing countries. About thirty million children are growing up poor in the world's richest
countries. The United States has the highest child poverty rate in the developed world at 25%. We

Global Hunger Is The Most Prevalent Issue
Global Hunger is the most prevalent issue in the modern world. In much of Asia, Africa and other
parts of the developing world, people are malnourished and do not have access to sufficient food.
Hunger levels in third–world countries has decreased, however in war affected countries such as
Iraq, hunger has increased severely. Malnourishment affects the body all through a person's life,
from the moment they are born to when they are elderly, if they survive that long. Life long hunger
can increase mortality rate, stunt growth, increase risk of diseases and mental impairment. World
Vision, an organisation that helps third world countries to overcome "poverty and injustice", has a
program called the 40 Hour Famine, where volunteers collect donations and in return give up
something that people in impoverished countries do not have such as food, furniture and technology
for 40 hours. This year the 40 Hour Famine will held on the 14th to the 16th of August and this year
38,461 people have participated in the event. Through surveys, posters and group involvement in the

A Study On The Mexican Drug War
The Mexican Drug War has cost not only human lives, but also the health of a country's economy. A

regional economics and rule of law in Mexico, states that "increases in criminal presence and violent
crime reduce economic diversification, increase sector concentration, and diminish economic

effects on workforce, foreign investments, governmental economic activity, and civilian lifestyle
due to the war shall be explored While the military and the government are actively engaged in the

government's national budget towards deploying strategic military raids and improving security for
civilians. In efforts to tackle the drug war problem, the Mexican government's expenditure on
military, domestic security, and the justice system has steadily increased from $13 billion in 2003 to

Competition for Increasingly Scarce Resources in the 21st...
Competition for Increasingly Scarce Resources in the 21st Century Introduction During the 1960s,
dire Malthusian warnings about the impact of overpopulation, consumption and resource depletion
caused only a ripple of concern in the international community as the Green Revolution and modern
birth control methods and practices appeared to provide a viable solution to these problems.
Unfortunately, even though innovations in agricultural practices have increased yields even further
than during the second half of the 20th century, most authorities agree that realistic limits are
already being reached. Complicating issues for policymakers today is the paradoxical nature of
population growth, with many wealthy nations experienced negative population growth while a
number of impoverished developing nations are experiencing explosive population growth, placing
even heavier demands on already scant resources. To determine how the issues of overpopulation,
consumption, and resource depletion relate to wealthy nations and developing nations and how can
these issues be addressed, this paper provides a review of the relevant literature, followed by a
summary of the research and important findings in the conclusion. Review and Analysis The issues
of overpopulation, consumption and resource depletion are, of course, inextricably interrelated.

The Living Planet Index ( Lpi )
Over the course of history, many scientist experts have raised the fright and panic about population
numbers that only increase every year. According to the Living Planet Report, "the Living Planet
Index (LPI), which measures more than 10,000 representative populations of mammals, birds,
reptiles, amphibians and fish, has declined by 52 per cent since 1970." Population sizes of different
species in the world has dropped by at least half. Some of these species are the living things that
establishes the fabric of the ecosystems which sustain life on Earth. "In the following two centuries,
the population increased at an annual growth rate of 6 per 1,000, reaching 2.5 billion by 1950. In the
following five decades, it has more than doubled, at a growth rate of 18 per 1,000 to reach more than
6 billion in 2000. The world population will reach 8 billion to 10 billion by the year 2030" (Robbins,
130). Today, we are using and taking so much from our ecosystems and natural processes, we are
actually exposing and exploiting our own very existence on Earth. Nature preservation and
sustainable ecological development complement each other. They are just as much about protecting
the future of humanity – our well–being, economy, food security, and social stability. Earth's
population is approaching ten billion at the same time that resource limits and environmental

Due to the increasing global problem of obesity, the authors sought to analyze the relationship

study, which took place from October 2006 through April 2007, assessed the relationship between
total sleep time, the caloric intake of healthy adolescents, and other related factors such as hunger,
food cravings, and satiety. One possible cause of obesity was attributed to the unexpected
association between increased daytime sleep and patterns of eating. Prior studies noted that sleep

After the pro–rich neo liberalism emerged triumphant, people who are at the helm of affairs appear
to be obsessed with only one thing – that is 'ease of doing business'. Every year the World Bank
releases the ease of doing business index in which it ranks countries on the basis of their business
friendliness. If a country wants to prove that it is business friendly it has to listen to the World Bank,
which is the custodian of the big businesses.
Now the question arises as to what exactly the big businesses want? Though they cite some cleverly
worded performance indicators to compile the index, their true intention appears to be something
else. They want land at throw away prices even if it is fertile agriculture land, they want licenses to

It appears that the government's efforts to improve the ease of doing business have paid off and
India leapfrogged to 100th position in the index, which triggered a euphoria among the politicians,
business tycoons and the press. Now, the government is gearing itself up to present it as one of its
biggest achievements.
Well, they have the 'ease of doing businesses'. Now the question is when will the poor and the
downtrodden have the 'ease of living index'? Their daily lives have become too laborious and
stressful and they are leading agonizingly painful lives in squalid conditions. Their children don't
have enough food to eat. In the recently released Global Hunger Index (GHI) India featured at 100
th position among the 119 countries, lagging behind even the North Korea ruled by a despotic
regime and the war torn Iraq.
In spite of all this grinding poverty, our governments have progressively been reducing the welfare
spending in the name of maintaining fiscal prudence. They say that the credit rating agencies may
downsize our sovereign credit rating if we don't keep our fiscal deficit under control by controlling
the expenditure. They, however, don't think about the same fiscal prudence while announcing the
so–called 'measures to spur the growth'. As part of the measures they give bailouts to big businesses

Globalization: Making the World A Fatter Place One Country at A Time
Abstract
Current estimations indicate that about 500 million adults are obese with 120 million residing in the
developing nations. This is the first in the history of man society that the world has more overweight
individuals than underweight population. The World Health Organization (WHO) refers to this
pattern as the concept of 'globesity'. This is an indication that obesity is a global problem affecting
poor and low–income nations in the past two decades as opposed to the previous notion of its
influence in the context of Western nations. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the
relationship between the concepts of globalization of the American fast food corporations and global
obesity. This relates to the examination of the statistics on YUM Brands, PepsiCo, and McDonald's
dominance in markets around the globe. The research paper will also correlate the dominance of the
first food entities to the increasing rate of global obesity problem. The focus will be on the
examination of the implications of the fast food products on the global culture thus influences on the
global obesity problem.

The world has changed dramatically in the last twenty or so years with the advent of the internet.
One of the greatest changes to the world was e–commerce. One of the largest companies that came
about because of this change is Amazon. Amazon is one of the largest online e–commerce stores that
sells almost everything. This case study will examine Amazon, international trade, and Canada.
To regulate international trade, governments put into place different forms of regulation. Some of
this regulation protects domestic companies while others promote trade. Currently, the United States

countries. This agreement is called the North American Free Trade ... Show more content on

Canada's currency is called the Canadian Dollar, or CAD for short. According to Bloomberg.com,
the current ratio between USD and the CAD is $1.2621 to $1 USD. The Canadian Dollar has
displayed a trend over the past year of its value dropping. This drop in value on the global exchange
will affect prices in Canada. As the CAD value drops, its exports will be cheaper for other nations
while imports, like products from Amazon, will be more expensive for the Canadian people. The
dropping value of CAD will continue to change prices and might cause products imported into
Canada by Amazon to be priced out of the market.

Food Crisis By Edward Keller And Darcy Bender
Sneha Deepika Dantuluri Edward Keller & Darcy Bender Design for the Century December 17,
2015 FOOD CRISIS Food not only distinguishes and represents a culture, but can also reflect one 's
personality, lifestyle, and socio–economic status. It is the rudiment of mankind and people cannot
survive without it. Food crisis is becoming increasingly severe in this days. Every 3.6 seconds, the
time it takes you to take a bite of food, a person dies of hunger or malnourishment (Vision). Hunger
is a problem that has been around since the beginning of time, but it is everything but yesterday's
issue. It is very real today and the numbers of starving people are still growing. One would think this
issue is because that there is not enough food for everyone in the world, but there is more than
enough to go around. The global food crisis is unacceptable because it is caused by a number of
easily solvable problems. In the near future this is going to be a more dominant critical issues which
needs to be addressed and resolved. Significantly, there has been nothing comparable to the 30
million or more who perished from starvation during China's tragic "Great Leap Forward" (1958–
1961). However, while India may not be a starving country, large swathes of the population,
especially children, are still malnourished. India is the second largest country in the world in
agricultural produce with highest percentage of arable land area. It also ranks first in the gross
irrigated croplands.

Food Security : Food, Security, And Food Security
VALUE CHAIN AND FOOD SECURITY
Food security is often defined as the state of having access to a sufficient quantity of affordable,
nutritious food. To ensure that all humans are food secure and do not face the scourge of hunger, the
world has set for itself an ambitious target of zero hunger by the year 2030 , as part of the
sustainable development goals. Much progress has been made to increase food production and
yields to meet the growing food demands, however challenges exist that are occasioned by conflict
in developing countries, climate change and volatile food prices. There is however need to
strengthen food systems and supply chains to reduce inefficiencies and better respond to shocks.
Food Security
The 2017 state of food security and nutrition in the world report by the FAO finds that global hunger
has been on the rise. In particular, 11% of the world's population is hungry. In 2016, 815 million
people were hungry. This number was 38million more than in 2015 . In its estimation, 489million
hungry people reside in countries with civil conflict and strife. IFPRI on the other hand has found
that the levels of hunger have decreased by 27% from the 2000 levels. This revelation is contained
in the 2017 Global hunger index. Despite the seemingly varied numbers, both reports recognize the
need to invest in peace to ensure food security and nutrition.
WFP on its part, estimated that the people who experienced hunger in 2016 at 795milion and
forecasted a rise in 2017. This

Closing the Gender Gap in Agriculture
Closing the gender gap in agriculture is a critical component of improving lives and reducing hunger
in developing countries. If female farmers had the same access to resources as males do, they could
increase the yields on their farms by 20–30 percent. This could raise the total agricultural output in
developing countries by 2.5–4 percent, which could then reduce the number of food insecure people
by 12–17 percent. (FAO, 2011) Women in developing countries lack access to productive resources
and opportunities such as land, livestock, labor education financial services and technology, which
leaves women unable to participate in fair rural labor markets. This gender discrimination harms the
ability of women in rural communities to support themselves and their families and decreases the
efficiency of the work they do, leaving them unable to find time to engage in productive activities
outside of food production and preparation. One in eight people in the world are suffering from
chronic hunger and sixty percent of the world's hungry are female. There are approximately 168.4
million more women than men who are regularly not getting enough food to lead an active life.
Though the number of hungry is 17 percent lower than the total number of undernourished reported
in 1990–92, there are significant differences is the amount of improvement among regions. Of the

genetically modified foods which are foods that come from genetically engineered organisms.
Examples of such organisms are sheep, cows, and fish. However, since it is a new invention, it is

Genetically Modified crops can be beneficial for health in terms of their food value. Foods include
lots of vitamins which are necessary to our body. In early days, our foods were full of vitamins,
proteins, carbohydrate and they were occupied with value. However, now there are not enough
foods which are full of value. Because there are lots of environmental factors like global warming
which causes to summers takes long time, and scarcity of water, and also some pests. These factors
effect the crops and farmers have to use pesticide and this cause to decrease food value. And it leads
lots of health problems. And the one of the most important health problem is Vitamin A deficiency.
This is the cause of at least "1 million childhood deaths" each year and is "considered the single
most serious cause of blindness amongst children" in the developing countries. "A possible solution
to this problem is the genetic modification of rice." ( Potrykus, quoted inGenetic Modification)
Although GM foods are benefical for the food value, in some circumstances, it can be very harmful
for human health. Without too much control eating genetically modified food can be dangerous and
it can lead lots of diseases like Eosonophil Myalgia Syndrome. In this debate, the Physicians and

The Hunger Of World Hunger
World Hunger
Imagine not being able to reach into your refrigerator and pull out a snack. Think about those
mornings when you forget to eat breakfast and your stomach is growling the whole morning. Now
imagine not being able to suppress that feeling. Imagine feeling that hunger day after day. This is
reality for almost a sixth of the world's population. Is there any good news? Yes there is. There are
many ways for us to reduce world hunger. This essay will look at the causes of world hunger as well
as short–term, and long–term, solutions. World hunger can be solved using a combination of ideas
and people working together.
In the first world there are 9 million people suffering from hunger. In Canada, the HungerCount
survey, organized by Food Banks Canada, counted the number of people using food banks and
analysed their living conditions. The hunger issue in Canada has to do with poverty. Only 6% of
food bank users own their own home. Even with social assistance, which over 50% of food bank
users are receiving as their main source of income, these people cannot meet their basic needs. Child
hunger is also an issue in Canada, where 37% of food bank users are children. When a household's
income is too low, the children suffer. Many parents don't have the time to take care of their children
and work at the same time. Although these facts are about Canada, there are the similar issues facing
people all over the first world.

The Effects Of Child Poverty
"There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more
important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives
are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace" (Kofi Annan). Children are like
flowers. They must be loved, protected, and nourished in order to bloom. If they lack any of these
essentials, they are most likely going to suffer and die without being able to serve their purpose.
There is this universal hope that all children will flourish in life; however, there are certain
circumstances that draw a line between the fortunate and unfortunate. In this case, the factor that
dictates their future is their status in society, such as having the leisure of being able to attend
facilities that aren't available to others. Poverty in children has numerous psychological, physical
and mental effects and well–being. Based on the context that the children operate within their social
and academic forte, poverty affects the children unfavorably in numerous distinct ways. Children
living in poverty are often denied access to basic needs and proper living conditions for healthy
growth and development. As such, the insufficiency or dearth of the needs affect their lives in a
great way that constrain their normal growth to become productive people in the world.
In the United States, child poverty has been a severe issue even when the country was established.

Economic Development Of A Country 's Economy Essay
We often classify countries and areas in the world by how developed they are, but this is term is
relative, depending on your measurement. There are many factors that count towards a country's
economy that is difficult to quantify. The popular measurements for economic development are
Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is the value of all the recognized goods and services
produced in a country in a specific period of time usually a year, and Gross National Income (GNI),
quantified by the summation of the GDP and the net income acquired overseas (Investopedia). There
is GDP per capita which is the indicator of the personal income of the country (Chidakel and
Herrero).
If we go by these numbers we conclude Africa is underdeveloped because all the numbers are low
compared to the known developed countries like Germany, Norway, Canada etc. In Ethiopia the
annual GDP per capita is $505 in 2013 (Indicators), while Libya's annual GDP per capita is $11,964
in 2013 (Indicators) and the United States of America annual GDP per capita is $53,042 in 2013
(Indicators). Libya being one of countries in Africa that are above the average, when compared to
the USA it is about 4 times poorer, Ethiopia is about 100 times poorer when compared to the USA,
now this comparison does not tells much about the economy in the country, since goods in African
countries do not have the same value in Europe or USA, we need to look at the purchasing power
parity (PPP). In Ethiopia the GDP (PPP) is 118.2

1991 it equated to 30% of all GDP (Rudolph, 1987, Table
One, p. 5). The rural sector of India remains vital today as 70% of the total Indian population dwell
in either small rural villages or farms (World Hunger and Poverty
Facts, 2013). India has therefore managed to combine its impressive economic achievements, which
can match that of the developed world, whilst continually facing humanitarian issues present in
developing nations. This conclusion suggests that economic development does not necessarily have
a correlation with human development. Until recently, a common view of development referred to
rising income levels and overall economic growth of a country. However, in recent years a shift
towards focusing upon humanity issues and circumstances rather than monetary concerns reflects
the new definition of a nation's development, which can be measured by the Human Development
Indicator (HDI) produced by the United Nation
Development Programme in 1990. Discussions on the 'goals of development' now involve
emphasizing the reduction of poverty, rather than raising the average levels of income per capita
(Anand & Ravallion, 1993, p. 133).

Food Security Movement And The Global Food Supply Initiatives
Large businesses dominate our local and global food systems controlling most of production,
processing, distribution, marketing and retailing of food. This gives big businesses the power to
eliminate competition and dictate their own terms to their suppliers forcing farmers and consumers
into poverty and malnutrition. As a result, movements such as food security, global food supply
initiatives and Food Sovereignty have been created to combat the damage big corporations have
caused on farmers and communities. The food security movement and the global food supply
initiatives both strive for safe and adequate amount of food to be available to communities to reduce
poverty and malnutrition on a global scale. However, both differ in that food security pushes for the
right for all people to have physical, social and economic access to safe, adequate and nutritious
food for an active and healthy life (ACIAR, "Food Security and why it matters", 2012) whereas, the
global food supply initiative leans more towards improvements in food safety management systems
to have all consumers access to safe food. (Buhot) On that note, a third relatively new movement
has been created called food sovereignty which presents a broader concept and solutions on solving
problems of hunger and malnutrition. Food sovereignty focuses on the right of peoples,
communities and countries to define their own agricultural, labour, fishing, food and land polices
which are ecologically, socially, economically and

Child Poverty
In the United States, child poverty has been a severe issue even when the country was established.
When looking at the statistics of child poverty from the past, it is clear that there was an increasing
number of families and children living in poverty. This trend dates back to the year 2000 when 11.6
million people were living in poverty. In 2007, the number of individuals suffering from poverty
rose to 13.4 million, (Arrighi & Maume, 2007). This is due to the massive economic fallout, also
known as the Great Recession. The United States lost over 7.5 million jobs and the unemployment
rate doubled, which directly impacted parents and their children, (Grusky & etc., 2011). This crisis
resulted in leaving many Americans financially insecure. Even though many of the financially stable
individuals suffered a great loss, they were able to utilize their resources to navigate through the
calamity and recover whereas those who were poor faced an economic issue with greater impact.
They were faced with foreclosures, bankruptcies and mortgage felonies. Most importantly, the lives
of the young children were negatively impacted as well. The four areas that the children were
affected by from the Great Recession were: health, hunger, housing, abuse and neglect, (Wiltz
2015). In several households, there was at least one member that suffered from malnourishment
because of the inadequate food supply for the family. On the other hand, numerous children were

taken so many initiatives for food security recently, but those are not sufficient comparatively to our
growing population.
Although food grain is more available in good harvest years, Bangladesh as a whole still has a very
low level of nutrition. This means many households and individuals do not eat a balanced, nutritious
diet, even in good years. According to the World Bank, approximately 33 million of the 150 million
people in Bangladesh cannot afford an average daily intake of more than 1800 kilocalories (the
minimum standard for nutrition as set by the World Food Program). For people in most developing
countries, the daily calorie average is 2,828. In Bangladesh, that average is only 2,190.
Poverty is the major factor effecting food security in Bangladesh. Despite the impressive increases
in food grain, around half of Bangladeshis remain below the established food based poverty line.

The Ebola virus made Sierra Leone one of it's biggest victims as it spread across West Africa. It is
no doubt due to the Ebola epidemic that Sierra Leone's demographic pressure remained fragile
according to the index. According to the World Health Organization, Sierra Leone acted according
to protocol, yet outbreak was eminent. It is here where the deficiency in public services correlating
with the demographic pressures in Sierra Leone becomes most evident. The quality healthcare in
Sierra Leone might have improved but it is still in need. Although control was implemented

Advantages Of Cosmopolitanism
Assessment criteria
As for the core values of the proposed cosmopolitan model (and new shape of global political order
should, in our view, be cosmopolitan in nature), it is rooted in equal moral dignity of all men.
Cosmopolitanism has to pledge for global democracy of individuals (but also of ethnic groups and
states, at least in initial phases of reform process), where all people should ideally be authorized to
participate in decision–making that would later oblige them. Differences in power (though necessary
and recommended to a certain point) must be put aside when deciding and ensuring decent
capabilities of every human being to follow its chosen life path. All states, individuals and groups
are treated equally. Shared and widely–recognized human nature based on needs (not fixed, but ones
that are to be imagined and re–defined always again) serves as a precondition for global deliberation
and insitution–building, since the cosmopolitan authority may be maintained only if all individuals
and groups perceive themselves as relatively equal (in the sense their dignity or worth is the same as
those of others, and that they have enough material ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, supossed interest of future generations (not even born), as well as past generations (passed
away) are taken into account, in order to avoid the presentism in democracy. Along with the separate
care for natural environment and nature in itself, this makes obvious what is protected is the Life.
From the standpoint of global justice and international ethics, it is useful to consider establishing
just institutions as an obligation, apart from the obligation to personally do no harm to others. So,
given the fact that people participate in the creation and maintenance of institutions that allow
drastic negative effects on human beings (millions of people are dying of hunger, preventable
diseases, the violence that can be stopped etc.), one must question their responsibility, and think of
duty to

Hiv And Its Effects On Nigeria, Lower Respiratory...
As of 2013, the CDC listed that the top 3 causes of mortality in Nigeria are malaria, lower
respiratory infections, and HIV (CDC, 2013). HIV is the third leading cause of deaths in Nigeria and
account for 9% of all deaths (CDC, 2013). HIV is the virus that causes AIDS, or acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome. It can be contracted through the exchange of bodily fluids with
another infected individual. In Nigeria, the spread of HIV occurs through high prostitution rates,
unsafe sexual practices, blood transfusions, and through mother–to–child transmission. The second
cause of mortality in Nigeria are lower respiratory infections. Lower respiratory infections (LRIs)
are commonly caused by viral infections. The most common lower respiratory infections are
bronchitis, pneumonia, and the chronic cough. In Nigeria, the contraction of LRIs can occur due to a
poor standard of living including a lack of basic household amenities such as proper ventilation and
running water. LRIs can also occur when the immune system is weakened such as those living with
HIV/AIDS. The number one leading cause of death in Nigeria is malaria. In 2010, malaria was more
prevalent in Nigeria than any other country in the world (CDC, 2015). Malaria is a parasitic

Causes Of The Green Revolution

  • 1. Causes Of The Green Revolution The Green Revolution occurred around the 1940s, this was right after WWII had ended so many countries were not doing so well economically and this affected their agricultural abilities. During this time new technologies, to speed up the process of growing food, were introduced. Things such as fertilizers, pesticides, and modern irrigation systems were implementing into farming around the world. The Green Revolution was caused by the lack of enough food to support the growing global population , particularly in less developed countries, and the threat that this posed on the surrounding more prosperous countries. It yielded results, helping to feed many starving people in the world, but consequently it appeared to ruin some farmlands. Natural farming in years to come and negatively affected certain groups of people. The green revolution was caused, for the most part, by the lack of a substantial food supply for the world population. As Dr. Norman Borlaug said, there were billions of people in the world who were constantly plagued with hunger. They did not have the proper conditions or nutrient rich soil that are necessary for growing enough crops to sustain themselves. Dr. Borlaug was involved in the research for the Green Revolution, he predicted that unless the methods of the Green Revolution were "fully implemented", then the results would not suffice, and the starving population would remain hungry. (Doc 2). President Truman expressed similar sentiments about the world ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Essay On Adequate Nutrition Human beings need to have adequate nutrition to attain normal physical growth (in children) and for a healthy life. Adequate nutrition is a fundamental right for every human being. If people fail to consume sufficient quality and quantity of nutrients, they will suffer from hunger or malnutrition. Malnutrition takes a variety of forms. The main types of malnutrition seen in Nepal are protein– energy malnutrition, iodine deficiency disorders, iron deficiency anemia and vitamin A deficiency. In particular malnutrition places an enormous burden on children and women. Even mildly or moderately malnourished children and women are more likely to be at high risk of death due to lack of resistance against common infectious diseases. The above types of malnutrition not only affect people's health but also affect the quality of life and the development of the socio–economic situation in the country.1 Good nutrition is a prerequisite for the national development of countries and for the well–being of individuals. Although problems related to poor nutrition affect the entire population, women and children are especially vulnerable because of their unique physiology and socioeconomic characteristics.1 Adequate nutrition is critical to children's growth and development. The period from birth to age two is especially important for optimal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Socioeconomic status of the family was found most important predictor of underweight and stunting. Availability of cultivable land and food sufficiency represents how much family is boosted up to provide sufficient food to their children which shows its effect in long run as children brought up in poor socioeconomic family were found prone to be stunted and underweight. • 5. Poverty And Its Effects On Human Development My "sustained development goal" is zero hunger. Most of us cannot imagine finishing our day without a meal, but for a very huge population in the world, being hungry is part of everyday life. Hunger leads to malnutrition and it has long term irreversible effect on brain development. Hungry and malnourished child performs poorly academically and cannot achieve its full potential. Poor brain development and academic performance leads to poverty. Hungry population cannot escape poverty. Poverty then leads to further hunger and it is a never–ending conflict. Many children and adults in developing part of the world are caught in this. Once the population is fed and properly nourished this cycle of hunger and poverty can be broken. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These factors lead to poor agricultural yield and inadequate food supply to the population. Zambia has vast agricultural potential. Despite fertile land and ample water availability, the agricultural potential of Zambia is not fully used. Of 58% suitable land only 14% is currently cultivated. Most of the agricultural land is cultivated by small farmers whose average land holding is 0.5 to 0.9 hectare. Small scale farmers make up 85% of the farmer population. Small subsistence farmers are poor and they do not have enough capital available for investing in modern agricultural technology, fertilizer and superior quality seed. Due to poor agricultural infrastructure for small subsistence farmers the average yield of crops is low. Only 0.5 to 1 ton of maize per hectare is produced by these farmers whereas average maize yield in more evolved agricultural area is 4 tons per hectare. Low yield leads to food insecurity. A household of 6 people need 1.1 tons' maize per year for food security. If these subsistence farmers have availability of capital for investing in agricultural infrastructure the yield can be increased 4 to 8 times leading to food security as well as profit. My Non–Government organization is "AGRIZAM" which is involved in co–operative farming which helps provide investment for adequate agricultural infrastructure. With improved infrastructure, the yield will increase leading not only to curb hunger but also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. India Becoming By Akash Kapur Disha, Kanika and Ayesha's presentation on "India Becoming" by Akash Kapur was a thorough review of the book. They covered many themes including change, development, modernity, the culture of violence and by doing so got at the heart of the book, which showed that "India [can] often feel like two nations." The group discussed some of the negative effects of development in India, one major one being pollution. According to Kapur, seventy percent of India's surface water is polluted and half a million deaths a year were attributed to air pollution. This was discussed in contrast to the positive effects of development that have seen the erosion of the caste system and allowed women and people of lower castes upward social mobility. The group was able to highlight some of the effects of development on the people of India. However, many of their arguments were oversimplified and did not account for the conditions of the majority of Indians. In addition, many of their arguments lacked conviction because they were not backed by statistics or references from outside sources that could have corroborated the fieldwork done by Kapur. As such, this review will highlight some issues excluded by the presenters and argue that though India has developed, it has been at the cost of ignoring the agrarian sector and a massive rise in starvation and poverty. When talking about India, one often hears of how fast it is growing, how it is amongst the largest economies in the world and is often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) was launched in 1999, making its name as the world's first leading global benchmark for sustainability. This index consists of the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in terms of sustainability. Corporate sustainability is the business approach that formulates long–term shareholder value by grasping opportunities and controlling risks created from economic, environmental and social development. Sustainability serves as opportunities and risks that companies must adjust to and is critical to the creation of long–term shareholder value, especially in an increasingly resource constrained world. RobecoSAM then continues to monitor new coverage of the companies in the universe on a daily basis, whether it is through media stories, RepRisk, and etc., in order to analyze the company's involvement with the environmental, social, economic issues that may negatively effect one's reputation and core business. Through careful observation of the universe, RobecoSAM is able to in decide whether a company's policies, processes, management systems, and commitments shape into excellent positive performance. RobecoSAM then has 59 industries roll up into 24 global industry groups so that the top scoring company from each is included on the DJSI. Not only does RobecoSAM stand as the basis for the development of the DJSI, but it also provides insights used to conduct empirical in–house research or is used to measure the impact of corporate sustainability performance on financial performance. • 11. Effectiveness of International Efforts to Ease Problem of... How effective are the international efforts to ease the problem of global hunger? Global hunger, as its name suggests, is a global issue that requires the assistance and cooperation of countries, regardless of nationality, wealth or religion, so as to find an effective solution. Many policies and efforts, both international and national, have been done, or presently underway to reduce poverty, which causes hunger. The good cause behind these efforts cannot be denied, however, one may doubt if the money pumped into them are potent enough to rapidly decrease the rate of hunger in a short period of time. These efforts have made improvements to alleviate global hunger but more have to be done by the global community via sustainable and long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Otherwise, ignorance of these problems will lead to the downfall of policies and efforts. Third, food aid given to developing countries by large producers such as U.S. and U.K. harms their economies and increases dependency of the recipient nations on them if used as a long term solution. Most of the food aid carried out is program food aid whereby recipient nations purchase food with money borrowed from donor nations at lower than market interest rates. This will hurt economies of recipient nations as it promotes domestic interests of donor countries since it disrupts food markets in recipient countries. Introduction of food aid will cause prices to decrease such that local producers are unable to make profits at the same prices so sellers may leave the market, leading to a greater dependency on food aid. Thus, food aid should only be used for relief or project–based purposes. Instead, donor countries should use funds and resources to create self–sustaining business and enterprises so that local producers can make profits and ensure the output will meet domestic demands for food. Fertile lands and natural resources are advantages which developing nations have and should develop and utilize so as to build a stronger agricultural market. Forth, charity organizations gives large amounts of money yearly to governments of developing nations to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Only eleven countries in the world have no violence or major conflict, and these countries are considered 'peaceful'. In recent years, the deterioration of global peace has become obvious with 2015 being a bad year for international peace and security. According to the latest Global Peace Index report, in 2015, the world experienced the highest number of global battle deaths for 25 years, frequently high terrorism levels and the highest number of refugees and displaced people since World War II. • 15. Examining the Social Indicator of Public Spending on... A nation is defined not just by geographic borders, it is defined by its citizens. Citizens are shaped by the goods and services that are available to them. Any governmental service costs money; therefore a nation's economy – and the spending of that money – works to shape the sociological core of that nation. But how should that money be spent? One can argue that education spending is important to a nation's well–being. During the 19th century US President James Garfield commented that "next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained" (as cited in McPherson, 1912, p.192). One way in which a nation's value for the importance of education can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not everything in Oman is halcyon; there are pressing environmental issues, mainly the maintenance of an adequate supply of water for agricultural and domestic use. The fact is that there is only "1 cubic kilometer of renewable water resources, with 94% used in farming and 2% for industrial activity [...] and only 30% of all rural dwellers have pure drinking water. Both drought and limited rainfall contribute to shortages in the nation's water supply".4 As these environmental issues become more pressing, education spending may falter as money is put towards means of alleviating a water crisis. Culturally, Oman remains strong. Jones and Ridout (2012) make the case that "the key features of Omani social life that contribute to the formation of this culture of diplomacy...are traditions of tolerance and non–sectarianism characteristic of Islam in Oman, the well–documented prevalence of politeness as a social virtue".5 Now that we've examined the factors which both influence and are influenced by education spending in Oman, let us turn to Georgia. In the Eurasian nation of Georgia, total governmental spending on education amounts to 7.7% (World Bank, 2010). However, I argue that the low amount of this indicator is not out of apathy for the education of its citizens, rather political unrest is the main factor. After all, the current amount of ... • 21. Corporate Strategy : Ford Motor Company Essay Corporate Strategy Corporate strategy is primarily about the choice of direction for a firm as a whole and the management of its business or product portfolio. There are three active strategies that can affect the overall direction of the company. The company can either expand their current activities, make no change, or reduce its current activities (Wheelen, Hunger, Hoffman, & Bamford, 2015). Since the company was first founded in 1909, Ford Motor Company has participated in all three strategies to varying degrees of success or failure. The first strategy, expand its current activities, was the groundwork which sets up the success of the company from the very beginning. Generally, if a company wants to increase their current activities, it has two ways of accomplishing its goals. The company can grow by increasing its inputs without the aid of any innovation and technological process or by innovating new processes that increase its output without any additional inputs (Mihola, Wawrosz, & Kotsovcová, 2015). In the case of Ford Motor Company, it chose to expand by innovation, particularly through the use of the assembly line. However, that is not the only time that Ford Motor Company has expanded by innovation. Ford Motor Company has traditionally operated in three markets, America, Europe, and Asia. So, after looking at its closest competitors Ford Motor Company decided that in order to expand its operations, it would have to include other markets as well as its current ... Capitalism: The Forefront of Global Economic Success Arguably the most dominant economic system throughout history, Capitalism is both a political and commercial structure in which the production as well as management of goods and services are privately owned and operated in contrast to state or federal government. The origin of this booming fiscal policy could be attributed to various different factors such as the Industrial Revolution and an increasing interest in the investment of securities. The spirit of entrepreneurialism and the hunger for profit has led corporations and businesses [whether big or small] to inadvertently create a system that would stimulate the creation of wealth on an international scale for those countries who ... The cartoon depicts the mind of a supporter for the OWS (Occupy Wall Street) movement as having only 1% common sense and 99% emotional outrage on the current status of income equality in America. While it is common knowledge that the top 1% of income earners in the United States own approximately 40% of the nation's wealth, the national median income is roughly $52,000 as opposed to the global median income of $10,000. It appears that the advocates for the Occupy Wall Street movement are not aware of the benefits of capitalism and are so blinded by the fact that such a small portion of the nation retains most of its wealth. Based on some of the demands that Occupy Wall Street rallied for such as free education, guaranteed living wage regardless of employment and the outlaw of credit reporting agencies, one may argue that these people desired a Marxist or more communist environment. Their lack of approval for the capitalist system equated to their miniscule quantity of common sense and simple–minded ideology, according to Beeler (Document ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Poverty In America In the past thirty years overall extreme poverty rates have been cut in half, but we can do better. People who live in extreme poverty have not only a lack of income, but resources as well. Lacking resources often results in much larger issues such as hunger, limited availability to proper healthcare, limited access to education, and little to no sanitation facilities meaning less clean water. Around 767 million people around the world live off less than $2.00 a day which is the international poverty line; the largest amount of people in poverty live in Sub–Saharan Africa and Southern Asia. Normally small regions are more affected by poverty and even more likely to suffer if there is conflict or violence in their country ("Poverty – United Nations Sustainable Development"). Rich nations suffer from poverty as well; over forty–five million Americans are still stuck below the poverty line and not many people discuss poverty in our nation and search for solutions the way we do for people in other countries. • 27. Global Hunger Is The Most Prevalent Issue Global Hunger is the most prevalent issue in the modern world. In much of Asia, Africa and other parts of the developing world, people are malnourished and do not have access to sufficient food. Hunger levels in third–world countries has decreased, however in war affected countries such as Iraq, hunger has increased severely. Malnourishment affects the body all through a person's life, from the moment they are born to when they are elderly, if they survive that long. Life long hunger can increase mortality rate, stunt growth, increase risk of diseases and mental impairment. World Vision, an organisation that helps third world countries to overcome "poverty and injustice", has a program called the 40 Hour Famine, where volunteers collect donations and in return give up something that people in impoverished countries do not have such as food, furniture and technology for 40 hours. This year the 40 Hour Famine will held on the 14th to the 16th of August and this year 38,461 people have participated in the event. Through surveys, posters and group involvement in the 40 Hour Famine, I will raise awareness and knowledge about Global Hunger around my school. • 31. A Study On The Mexican Drug War The Mexican Drug War has cost not only human lives, but also the health of a country's economy. A study done by Viridiana Rio, a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University and an expert in regional economics and rule of law in Mexico, states that "increases in criminal presence and violent crime reduce economic diversification, increase sector concentration, and diminish economic complexity" (Ríos V). The direct relationship between violence and economic activity hopes to sharpen our understanding of the conflict's impact on Mexico (Bannon, I. and Collier, P.). Therefore, detrimental economic effects brought to the public will be explored. Specifically, the detrimental effects on workforce, foreign investments, governmental economic activity, and civilian lifestyle due to the war shall be explored While the military and the government are actively engaged in the drug war, they are faced with an insurmountable burden to spend a considerable amount of the government's national budget towards deploying strategic military raids and improving security for civilians. In efforts to tackle the drug war problem, the Mexican government's expenditure on military, domestic security, and the justice system has steadily increased from $13 billion in 2003 to $32 billion in 2015 (Mexico Institute). Although Mexico's priority is to promote peace and ensure security for its citizens, civilians are frustrated by the fact that the Mexican Drug War, showing no sign of improvement, has brought ... Competition for Increasingly Scarce Resources in the 21st Century Introduction During the 1960s, dire Malthusian warnings about the impact of overpopulation, consumption and resource depletion caused only a ripple of concern in the international community as the Green Revolution and modern birth control methods and practices appeared to provide a viable solution to these problems. Unfortunately, even though innovations in agricultural practices have increased yields even further than during the second half of the 20th century, most authorities agree that realistic limits are already being reached. Complicating issues for policymakers today is the paradoxical nature of population growth, with many wealthy nations experienced negative population growth while a number of impoverished developing nations are experiencing explosive population growth, placing even heavier demands on already scant resources. To determine how the issues of overpopulation, consumption, and resource depletion relate to wealthy nations and developing nations and how can these issues be addressed, this paper provides a review of the relevant literature, followed by a summary of the research and important findings in the conclusion. Review and Analysis The issues of overpopulation, consumption and resource depletion are, of course, inextricably interrelated. After all, more people mean more mouths to feed, water to drink and air to breathe. Indeed, increased population levels naturally result in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the Living Planet Report, "the Living Planet Index (LPI), which measures more than 10,000 representative populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, has declined by 52 per cent since 1970." Population sizes of different species in the world has dropped by at least half. Some of these species are the living things that establishes the fabric of the ecosystems which sustain life on Earth. "In the following two centuries, the population increased at an annual growth rate of 6 per 1,000, reaching 2.5 billion by 1950. In the following five decades, it has more than doubled, at a growth rate of 18 per 1,000 to reach more than 6 billion in 2000. The world population will reach 8 billion to 10 billion by the year 2030" (Robbins, 130). Today, we are using and taking so much from our ecosystems and natural processes, we are actually exposing and exploiting our own very existence on Earth. Nature preservation and sustainable ecological development complement each other. They are just as much about protecting the future of humanity – our well–being, economy, food security, and social stability. Due to the increasing global problem of obesity, the authors sought to analyze the relationship between total sleep time (TST) and its impact on body mass index (BMI) among adolescents. The study, which took place from October 2006 through April 2007, assessed the relationship between total sleep time, the caloric intake of healthy adolescents, and other related factors such as hunger, food cravings, and satiety. One possible cause of obesity was attributed to the unexpected association between increased daytime sleep and patterns of eating. Prior studies noted that sleep deprivation led to a decrease in optimal endocrine system functioning, which further resulted in decreased satiety and increased food cravings and caloric intake in ... If a country wants to prove that it is business friendly it has to listen to the World Bank, which is the custodian of the big businesses. Now the question is when will the poor and the downtrodden have the 'ease of living index'? Globalization: Making the World A Fatter Place One Country at A Time Abstract Current estimations indicate that about 500 million adults are obese with 120 million residing in the developing nations. This is the first in the history of man society that the world has more overweight individuals than underweight population. The World Health Organization (WHO) refers to this pattern as the concept of 'globesity'. Food Crisis By Edward Keller And Darcy Bender Sneha Deepika Dantuluri Edward Keller & Darcy Bender Design for the Century December 17, 2015 FOOD CRISIS Food not only distinguishes and represents a culture, but can also reflect one 's personality, lifestyle, and socio–economic status. It is the rudiment of mankind and people cannot survive without it. Food crisis is becoming increasingly severe in this days. Every 3.6 seconds, the time it takes you to take a bite of food, a person dies of hunger or malnourishment (Vision). Hunger is a problem that has been around since the beginning of time, but it is everything but yesterday's issue. It is very real today and the numbers of starving people are still growing. One would think this issue is because that there is not enough food for everyone in the world, but there is more than enough to go around. The global food crisis is unacceptable because it is caused by a number of easily solvable problems. In the near future this is going to be a more dominant critical issues which needs to be addressed and resolved. Significantly, there has been nothing comparable to the 30 million or more who perished from starvation during China's tragic "Great Leap Forward" (1958– 1961). However, while India may not be a starving country, large swathes of the population, especially children, are still malnourished. India is the second largest country in the world in agricultural produce with highest percentage of arable land area. It also ranks first in the gross irrigated croplands. ... Food Security : Food, Security, And Food Security VALUE CHAIN AND FOOD SECURITY Food security is often defined as the state of having access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. To ensure that all humans are food secure and do not face the scourge of hunger, the world has set for itself an ambitious target of zero hunger by the year 2030 , as part of the sustainable development goals. Much progress has been made to increase food production and yields to meet the growing food demands, however challenges exist that are occasioned by conflict in developing countries, climate change and volatile food prices. There is however need to strengthen food systems and supply chains to reduce inefficiencies and better respond to shocks. Food Security The 2017 state of food security and nutrition in the world report by the FAO finds that global hunger has been on the rise. In particular, 11% of the world's population is hungry. In 2016, 815 million people were hungry. This number was 38million more than in 2015 . In its estimation, 489million hungry people reside in countries with civil conflict and strife. IFPRI on the other hand has found that the levels of hunger have decreased by 27% from the 2000 levels. This revelation is contained in the 2017 Global hunger index. Despite the seemingly varied numbers, both reports recognize the need to invest in peace to ensure food security and nutrition. • 57. Closing the Gender Gap in Agriculture Closing the gender gap in agriculture is a critical component of improving lives and reducing hunger in developing countries. If female farmers had the same access to resources as males do, they could increase the yields on their farms by 20–30 percent. This could raise the total agricultural output in developing countries by 2.5–4 percent, which could then reduce the number of food insecure people by 12–17 percent. (FAO, 2011) Women in developing countries lack access to productive resources and opportunities such as land, livestock, labor education financial services and technology, which leaves women unable to participate in fair rural labor markets. This gender discrimination harms the ability of women in rural communities to support themselves and their families and decreases the efficiency of the work they do, leaving them unable to find time to engage in productive activities outside of food production and preparation. One in eight people in the world are suffering from chronic hunger and sixty percent of the world's hungry are female. There are approximately 168.4 million more women than men who are regularly not getting enough food to lead an active life. Think about those mornings when you forget to eat breakfast and your stomach is growling the whole morning. Now imagine not being able to suppress that feeling. Imagine feeling that hunger day after day. This is reality for almost a sixth of the world's population. Is there any good news? Yes there is. There are many ways for us to reduce world hunger. This essay will look at the causes of world hunger as well as short–term, and long–term, solutions. World hunger can be solved using a combination of ideas and people working together. In the first world there are 9 million people suffering from hunger. In Canada, the HungerCount survey, organized by Food Banks Canada, counted the number of people using food banks and analysed their living conditions. The hunger issue in Canada has to do with poverty. Only 6% of food bank users own their own home. Even with social assistance, which over 50% of food bank users are receiving as their main source of income, these people cannot meet their basic needs. Child hunger is also an issue in Canada, where 37% of food bank users are children. When a household's income is too low, the children suffer. Many parents don't have the time to take care of their children and work at the same time. Although these facts are about Canada, there are the similar issues facing people all over the first world. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace" (Kofi Annan). Children are like flowers. They must be loved, protected, and nourished in order to bloom. If they lack any of these essentials, they are most likely going to suffer and die without being able to serve their purpose. There is this universal hope that all children will flourish in life; however, there are certain circumstances that draw a line between the fortunate and unfortunate. In this case, the factor that dictates their future is their status in society, such as having the leisure of being able to attend facilities that aren't available to others. Poverty in children has numerous psychological, physical and mental effects and well–being. Based on the context that the children operate within their social and academic forte, poverty affects the children unfavorably in numerous distinct ways. Children living in poverty are often denied access to basic needs and proper living conditions for healthy growth and development. • 66. Economic Development Of A Country 's Economy Essay We often classify countries and areas in the world by how developed they are, but this is term is relative, depending on your measurement. There are many factors that count towards a country's economy that is difficult to quantify. The popular measurements for economic development are Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is the value of all the recognized goods and services produced in a country in a specific period of time usually a year, and Gross National Income (GNI), quantified by the summation of the GDP and the net income acquired overseas (Investopedia). There is GDP per capita which is the indicator of the personal income of the country (Chidakel and Herrero). If we go by these numbers we conclude Africa is underdeveloped because all the numbers are low compared to the known developed countries like Germany, Norway, Canada etc. In Ethiopia the annual GDP per capita is $505 in 2013 (Indicators), while Libya's annual GDP per capita is $11,964 in 2013 (Indicators) and the United States of America annual GDP per capita is $53,042 in 2013 (Indicators). Libya being one of countries in Africa that are above the average, when compared to the USA it is about 4 times poorer, Ethiopia is about 100 times poorer when compared to the USA, now this comparison does not tells much about the economy in the country, since goods in African countries do not have the same value in Europe or USA, we need to look at the purchasing power parity (PPP). For example, it is among the most industrialised nations of today which leads the world in the Information and Technology industry (IT), with their 350,000 IT and engineering graduates each year, and yet the majority of it's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is comprised from the agricultural sector where in 1991 it equated to 30% of all GDP (Rudolph, 1987, Table One, p. 5). The rural sector of India remains vital today as 70% of the total Indian population dwell in either small rural villages or farms (World Hunger and Poverty Facts, 2013). India has therefore managed to combine its impressive economic achievements, which can match that of the developed world, whilst continually facing humanitarian issues present in developing nations. This conclusion suggests that economic development does not necessarily have a correlation with human development. Until recently, a common view of development referred to rising income levels and overall economic growth of a country. However, in recent years a shift towards focusing upon humanity issues and circumstances rather than monetary concerns reflects the new definition of a nation's development, which can be measured by the Human Development Indicator (HDI) produced by the United Nation Development Programme in 1990. Discussions on the 'goals of development' now involve emphasizing the reduction of poverty, rather than raising the average levels of income per capita (Anand & Ravallion, 1993, p. 133).

As a result, movements such as food security, global food supply initiatives and Food Sovereignty have been created to combat the damage big corporations have caused on farmers and communities. The food security movement and the global food supply initiatives both strive for safe and adequate amount of food to be available to communities to reduce poverty and malnutrition on a global scale. However, both differ in that food security pushes for the right for all people to have physical, social and economic access to safe, adequate and nutritious food for an active and healthy life (ACIAR, "Food Security and why it matters", 2012) whereas, the global food supply initiative leans more towards improvements in food safety management systems to have all consumers access to safe food. (Buhot) On that note, a third relatively new movement has been created called food sovereignty which presents a broader concept and solutions on solving problems of hunger and malnutrition. Food sovereignty focuses on the right of peoples, communities and countries to define their own agricultural, labour, fishing, food and land polices which are ecologically, socially, economically and ... • 73. Child Poverty In the United States, child poverty has been a severe issue even when the country was established. When looking at the statistics of child poverty from the past, it is clear that there was an increasing number of families and children living in poverty. This trend dates back to the year 2000 when 11.6 million people were living in poverty. In 2007, the number of individuals suffering from poverty rose to 13.4 million, (Arrighi & Maume, 2007). This is due to the massive economic fallout, also known as the Great Recession. The United States lost over 7.5 million jobs and the unemployment rate doubled, which directly impacted parents and their children, (Grusky & etc., 2011). This crisis resulted in leaving many Americans financially insecure. Even though many of the financially stable individuals suffered a great loss, they were able to utilize their resources to navigate through the calamity and recover whereas those who were poor faced an economic issue with greater impact. They were faced with foreclosures, bankruptcies and mortgage felonies. Most importantly, the lives of the young children were negatively impacted as well. The four areas that the children were affected by from the Great Recession were: health, hunger, housing, abuse and neglect, (Wiltz 2015). In several households, there was at least one member that suffered from malnourishment because of the inadequate food supply for the family. On the other hand, numerous children were left to be homeless because of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Where first world country like USA throwing their surplus food at Atlantic, then millions of people are dying from hunger in Africa. What kind of justice is this? Is this called free economy, is this called brotherhood, is this called spreading peace all over the world? Food security is also a difficult issue like this matter. So that, we can ensure food security for all. Bangladesh as a developing country also trying to contribute to reduce the imbalance of food security. But because of so many lacking, Bangladesh cannot move forward. Though they have taken so many initiatives for food security recently, but those are not sufficient comparatively to our growing population. Although food grain is more available in good harvest years, Bangladesh as a whole still has a very low level of nutrition. This means many households and individuals do not eat a balanced, nutritious diet, even in good years. According to the World Bank, approximately 33 million of the 150 million people in Bangladesh cannot afford an average daily intake of more than 1800 kilocalories (the minimum standard for nutrition as set by the World Food Program). For people in most developing countries, the daily calorie average is 2,828. In Bangladesh, that average is only 2,190. Poverty is the major factor effecting food security in Bangladesh. Despite the impressive increases in food grain, around half of Bangladeshis remain below the established food based poverty line. And, as many as one third are living in extreme poverty and severely undernourished. Recent food ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Sierra Leone Ebola Impact In an underdeveloped continent such as Africa, weak infrastructure, egregious human rights violations, and inadequate public services are not uncommon. Countries, such as Sierra Leone are not exempt from such inadequacy despite international intervention and strides on behalf of an improving infrastructure to develop. Listed as a "very high warning" state in the Fragile States Index, Sierra Leone is plagued with issues of demographic pressures, uneven economic developed and incompetent public services. Despite international presence after the heinous human rights violations, the elements that make Sierra Leone a fragile state accompanied by their capacity gap is what makes the Fragile State Index indicators so applicable to Sierra Leone's state ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Ebola virus made Sierra Leone one of it's biggest victims as it spread across West Africa. It is no doubt due to the Ebola epidemic that Sierra Leone's demographic pressure remained fragile according to the index. According to the World Health Organization, Sierra Leone acted according to protocol, yet outbreak was eminent. It is here where the deficiency in public services correlating with the demographic pressures in Sierra Leone becomes most evident. The quality healthcare in Sierra Leone might have improved but it is still in need. Although control was implemented eventually, lives were still taken due to the severe shortage of public services and the lack of quality health care in Sierra Leone. Infection spread to nearly 23,000 in West Africa since the outbreak in March 2014. A handle has been taken on the epidemic, mostly contributed to the slight improvement in Sierra Leone recently as well as foreign intervention– ironically enough from former colonizer Great Britain. Unfortunately, controversy has plagued Sierra Leone on behalf of Ebola outbreak efforts. Not only does the WHO claim that "today, Sierra Leone's most urgent needs include opening up more Ebola care facilities– which means more trained staff to meet a severe shortage" but CNN reports that there has been a severe misappropriation of funds regarding Ebola aid. Although it may be appropriate to acclaim the audits of Sierra Leone for recognizing such misappropriation, one cannot neglect to understand that corruption and capacity failure in the structure of Sierra ... • 79. Advantages Of Cosmopolitanism Assessment criteria As for the core values of the proposed cosmopolitan model (and new shape of global political order should, in our view, be cosmopolitan in nature), it is rooted in equal moral dignity of all men. Cosmopolitanism has to pledge for global democracy of individuals (but also of ethnic groups and states, at least in initial phases of reform process), where all people should ideally be authorized to participate in decision–making that would later oblige them. Differences in power (though necessary and recommended to a certain point) must be put aside when deciding and ensuring decent capabilities of every human being to follow its chosen life path. All states, individuals and groups are treated equally. Shared and widely–recognized human nature based on needs (not fixed, but ones that are to be imagined and re–defined always again) serves as a precondition for global deliberation and insitution–building, since the cosmopolitan authority may be maintained only if all individuals and groups perceive themselves as relatively equal (in the sense their dignity or worth is the same as those of others, and that they have enough material ... Also, supossed interest of future generations (not even born), as well as past generations (passed away) are taken into account, in order to avoid the presentism in democracy. Along with the separate care for natural environment and nature in itself, this makes obvious what is protected is the Life. From the standpoint of global justice and international ethics, it is useful to consider establishing just institutions as an obligation, apart from the obligation to personally do no harm to others. So, given the fact that people participate in the creation and maintenance of institutions that allow drastic negative effects on human beings (millions of people are dying of hunger, preventable diseases, the violence that can be stopped etc.), one must question their responsibility, and think of duty to ... • 81. Hiv And Its Effects On Nigeria, Lower Respiratory... As of 2013, the CDC listed that the top 3 causes of mortality in Nigeria are malaria, lower respiratory infections, and HIV (CDC, 2013). HIV is the third leading cause of deaths in Nigeria and account for 9% of all deaths (CDC, 2013). HIV is the virus that causes AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It can be contracted through the exchange of bodily fluids with another infected individual. In Nigeria, the spread of HIV occurs through high prostitution rates, unsafe sexual practices, blood transfusions, and through mother–to–child transmission. The second cause of mortality in Nigeria are lower respiratory infections. Lower respiratory infections (LRIs) are commonly caused by viral infections. The most common lower respiratory infections are bronchitis, pneumonia, and the chronic cough. In Nigeria, the contraction of LRIs can occur due to a poor standard of living including a lack of basic household amenities such as proper ventilation and running water. LRIs can also occur when the immune system is weakened such as those living with HIV/AIDS. The number one leading cause of death in Nigeria is malaria. In 2010, malaria was more prevalent in Nigeria than any other country in the world (CDC, 2015). Malaria is a parasitic infection spread through bites from the Anopheles mosquito. This mosquito is most commonly found in warm climates, such as Sub–Saharan Africa, where the parasite it carries can thrive. When this infected mosquito bites an individual, its ...
