Shawshank Redemption Disorder
The film I watched was called The Shawshank Redemption. The film is about a young Banker
named Andy, who was wrongfully convicted. He was convicted of killing his wife and lover,
sentenced and sent to Shawshank prison. He is very smart and makes one friend, Red who is another
inmate. Andy is smart and overhears a guard talking about a financial situation he has. He convinced
the guard to let Andy help him and in return he and his friends can some beers. This would slowly
lead to a mutual and unspoken agreement between the warden and Andy. He would solve all their
financial problems for the prison. But this did not help Andy with other problems he was facing.
Over the first two years of his incarceration, Andy works in the prison laundry. He ... Show more

Sexual sadism disorder and homosexual behaviors. For people like Bogs treatment is limited for

disorder and many identify as gay or lesbian as their sexual preference and lifestyle. It does not
mean it's a problem. For Sexual Sadism it is a problem if it cause impairment or distress. People
who fit the criteria for sexual sadism may not seek treatment on their own due to feelings of shame
or concerns about being reported. Behavior therapy is a common approach to treating sexual sadism
patients. The individual learns how to change their arousal patterns to more socially accepted ones.
For antisocial disorder most think incarceration is the way to prevent these behaviors resulting in no
treatment. The treatment and therapy is usually court–ordered. Treatment of this disorder usually
involves the reward system and Schema therapy. But others say that if kids can

Sadomasochism Essay
Sadomasochism Sadomasochism is a sexually deviant behavior that is practiced by many people
within today's society. It is the combination of two paraphilias, sadism and masochism, which are
usually always linked together. An occasional mild or light form of sadomasochism (or S& M for
short), is considerably common among the general population. Many people often enjoy being
mildly dominant or submissive during lovemaking. They believe that it makes the experience more
enjoyable. But when S&M becomes the dominating feature of a person's sexuality, that is when he
or she is considered deviant. Unlike other paraphilias, sadomasochism includes a large population of
women as well as men. They are nearly equally balanced in ... Show more content on

Hypoxyphilia is a fairly common practice where a person chooses to enhance their sexual arousal by
voluntarily depriving himself or herself of oxygen. In order to become deprived of oxygen, people
usually use plastic bags, rope, or their partner's hands to choke their partner once consent is given.
This practice is dangerous and can possibly even result in a tragic death (Rathus, Nevid, &Fichner–
Rathus, p545–546). Masochism's counterpart, sadism, is the complete opposite for many reasons.
Sadism is a parphilia, which is characterized by the association of sexual satisfaction with the
infliction of pain or humiliation onto others. The term sadism refers to a French author and
philosopher, Marquis de Sade (1740––1814). Marquis de Sade wrote stories of people who became
sexually aroused by inflicting pain or humiliation on others. Some of his best known works are
Justine (published in 1791) and Juliette (published in 1797). A sadist receives sexual gratification by
role–playing. They usually play the authority figure who inflicts pain, humiliates, disciplines, and
plays master to another person (Ernulf&Innala, p637). Most sadists hurt and humiliate willing
partners who are usually masochists. A small minority of sadists may even attempt to stalk and
attack their unwilling victims. This is a very dangerous and harmful to its participants. In fact,
Sigmund Freud wrote extensively on sadism. In his research, he recognized its existence in the
individual and

Comparing Dr. Moreau And The Beetle
In two fin de siècle novels, H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896) and Robert Marsh's The
Beetle (1897), sadism plays a central role. However, while The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Beetle
both include characters that exemplify sadism, the novels differ greatly in the characters' portrayals
due to the sadistic characters' gender. The sadistic Moreau is presented as Machiavellian tyrant.
However, because Moreau's gender aligns with ideas of gendered sadism, the novel does not portray
him as degenerate, monstrous, nor ambiguous. In contrast, The Beetle tampers with the sadistic
female body, which leads to doubt of her true sex and form and leaves her as an undecidable,
degenerate monstrosity. The sadistic characters' descriptions in The Island of Dr. Moreau and The

A perplexing amalgamation of culture and nature led to the pathologizing of sexual perversion by
19th century "sexologists" (Peakman 1). Richard von Krafft–Ebing first introduced the term 'sadism'
in his book Psychopathic Sexualis (1886). Sadism includes the experience of mental and physical
suffering as pleasurable (Holguin 1285). Later defined as one of the "modern perversions" by
Sigmund Freud, it was traditionally seen as existing within the male domain (Schaffner 182), and as
a type of "male sexual cruelty" (Wayne 542). Furthering Krafft–Ebing's work, Freud suggests that
sadism's "life preserving aggression" in males is natural and biologically determined (Holguin
1286). In contrast, masochism, essentially the opposite of sadism, can be seen as

The Hangman's Horror: Roger, Sadism, and Psychopathy in...
With an understanding of the inherent darkness in all men and first–hand experience with savagery
and violence in World War II, William Golding used Lord of the Flies as not only a historical
allegory and a pulpit from which to address the darkness in all men, but also as a metaphor and a
example that no one is exempt from human nature. Golding's characters in Lord of the Flies reflect
this idea greatly, but none more so than Roger. Throughout Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the
character of Roger to show the follies of mankind and the ability of all people to turn to savagery, as
well as the inherent nature of man and society's internalized acceptance of violence, stemming from
Golding's own experiences with the subject. Golding created ... Show more content on

adding to his unapproachability and furtive personality. However, this chapter also shows that he is
fully "aware of the lingering social conditioning" (Koopmans) of his life before the boys were
stranded on the island;
"Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry – threw it to miss. The stone, that
token of preposterous time, bounced five yards to Henry's right and fell in the water. Roger gathered
a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards
in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life.
Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law.
Roger's arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins" (Golding

Psychology"). He had become very distant, and started to show a very low tolerance to frustration.
Dahmer also showed signs of two different paraphilias: sadism and necrophilia, along with
cannibalism. Sadism, a philia found in all of Dahmer's cases, is defined as sexual arousal from
inflicting pain (Berger). Due to his low tolerance of frustration, he would take it out as physical
torture to fulfil his sexual desires. Although Dahmer himself has said before he did not mean to hurt
anyone, he always had to be in control. Besides sadism, Dahmer partook of necrophilia. Necrophilia

Nazi Psychology In Theodor W. Adorno's Maus
One key theme of Theodor W. Adorno's chapter Education After Auschwitz is that society still
encourages parts of Nazi psychology. There are still people who are willing to blindly follow leaders
that could create similar things to Auschwitz through barbarism and sadism. History and the present
are so intertwined that to expect change for the future, one must unpack this past. The book Maus,
by Art Spiegelman, highlights that theme of Adorno's, by showing, on a microscale, how, in
Vladek's story, that Nazi psychology has not ended. By characterizing Nazis as cats and Jews as
mice, Spiegelman proves Adorno's point. Art writes about the treatment of the Jews and the
"sadism" that went along with that. Adorno's ideas seem to agree with that concept ... Show more

For example, sport can "promote aggression, brutality and sadism"(pg 197). If something so deeply
rooted in our society like sport promotes these characteristics then there is a lot of work to do to
change this mindset. Adorno goes on to write about collectives and the negative impacts of groups.
The group think that was seen in World War II is shown in Maus. Nazis killed and abused the Jews
as though it was a sport or an extermination job. Judging by Adorno's text, it seems the Nazi
psychology was following sadistic and barbaric urges through blind authority. It seems the
"willingness" to follow blindly is the flaw of bonds. Although bonds could lead to understanding
and community, they also lead to hatred of an "other" which then, promotes barbarism and

Lord Of The Flies Sadism Essay
William Golding's The Lord of the Flies: A Sadistic Society of Self–Destruction (and What We May
Do to Fix It)
According to Golding, modern humanity has suffered from a form of self–deception based back to
the dawn of the caveman age; that deception being, groundbreakingly enough, society's failure to
recognize our sadistic tendencies, wishes for personal gain, and preemptiveness to kill– qualities of
which have been entrenched in the sung expressions, arts, and politics of a contemporary populace.
However, it is of most hopeful and effective faith that these proclivities may be amended through
sophistication and development, things that have empirically improved society by receding faults in
our human behavior. The fact of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
62.) This statement issues the resistance which wields a functioning society from full–on "ferality",
otherwise identified as a tedious though triumphant method of an orderly lifestyle. Golding
elaborates further by characterizing the stone as "a token of preposterous time"(Golding, pg 62), or
an experience of human activity which is nearing cessation of remembrance. Though it also may
suggest the damaging effects of human frivolity, as activities of no productive use (especially in
children as seen in the book) may fail to maintain proper conduct through morally questionable
experimentation. By identifying the meanings of these symbolic excerpts, we can calculate
Golding's message of society's desperate need for order at all costs, and understand the
circumstances which usher disorder, such as Roger's.
As witnessed through the course of human history, it shouldn't strike us as odd that many figures of
power have treated their privilege of authority as a cherished treasure rather than a sacrificial
burden. As such, Golding continues to emphasize human faults by emphasizing the impact of what
amassed power can do to people. He introduces characters such as Ralph, who attempt to sustain
their democratic leadership by any means, even if several hardships are found deterring. On the
other hand, Jack Merridew may be considered as an inverse resemblance to Ralph, instead using the
excuse of unpromising events as a reason to become gradually awry and aggressive.

The Relationship Between Sadism And Its Effects On Children
Sadism is defined as the derivation of sexual pleasure from the infliction of pain, suffering and/or
humiliation upon another person. The pain and suffering of the victim, which may be both physical
and psychological, is pivotal to the sexual arousal and pleasure. According to Bernard (1933) sadism
hence represents a pathological intensification of the masculine mental character. Characteristics of
sadism according to DSM IV (2000) is as follows: having over a period of at least 6 months,
recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving acts (real, not
simulated) in which the psychological or physical suffering including humiliation of the victim is
sexually exciting to the person, as well as the person has acted on these urges with a non–consenting
person, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.
Introduction Sexual sadism is noticed primarily in males and generally starts with puberty, in spite
of the fact that sadistic behavior may be manifested prematurely in children. In all male cases, it
becomes obvious by early adulthood. According to Hucker (2009), sexual sadism may start off with
fantasies and, in some cases, these may never be acted upon or, be acted out in the more mild forms
of consensual relationships. In non–consensual cases, the behavior usually continues and often
escalates over time as the perpetrator experiences a need for increased violence in order to stimulate

The Is The Scientific Study Of Mental Disorders Essay
Psychopaths can be defined or determined by many different characteristics, and there are many sub
categories to psychopaths, however more often than not psychopaths have common beginnings.
Although most psychopaths have common beginnings, police still don't profile or find psychopaths
using efficacy. Psychopathology is the scientific study of mental disorders. A psychopath is a person
suffering from a chronic mental disorder with violent social behavior. Psychopaths lack conscience
and feelings for others. They are aware of what they are doing, however they continue take and do
what they want, with no trace of guilt. They demonstrate power over others to cover for their feeling
of inadequacy. Psychopaths are selfish, impulsive, aggressive, loveless, and remorseless. They can
appear charming, but are deceitful and manipulative. The word psychopath is broad and covers a
range of behaviors, so it is further broken down into subcategories throughout this paper. The
subcategories are; malignant narcissism, sadism, sexual sadism, and serial murderers. Malignant
narcissists are predatory individuals. They display egocentric antisocial aggression, voice distrust,
and show feelings of rejection. Their goals are to feel the gratification from vengeful or sexual
fantasies. Fantasies play a large role in malignant narcissists' lives, and become the primary source
of arousal. Malignant narcissists spend a great deal of their time imagining how they will go about

Essay On Sadism And Masochism
Having a desire to inflict pain on another person as a means of satisfying a sexual desire is not an act
that many would think normal compared to the general population. Most people find it repulsive
when pain is inflicted on another person, but there are some people that thrive when physical or
psychological suffering is applied to another person because it fulfills fantasies of torment (Hyde &
DeLamater, 2017). A person that practices this behavior is called a sexual sadist. There are other
people that enjoy being humiliated, beaten, and bound because it heightens sexual desire. They seek
to fulfill their sexual desires by receiving gratification from their own pain. This person would be
labeled as a sexual masochist because of their intense desire to suffer. Both of these types of people
would be characterized as paraphilias because of their extreme desire to satisfy urges based on
dangerous sexual activities. It has been up for question as to whether or not people who engage in
this behavior have a pathological disorder. Is it possible that the ... Show more content on

In fact, in behavioral science, studies of physical appearance have demonstrated that most women
(and men for that matter) equate self–worth and the worth of others with the attainment of
attractiveness (Bull and Rumsay 5). Therefore, to deprive women from her head hair equates a near
total loss of self–worth.
The shearing as the sexual punishment is to be found in numerous societies, from antiquity to the
present. It modifies the appearance of a woman at a time when the body is the object of aesthetic
valorization. It changes the relationship with the self and with the others. By cropping women,
society rejects its whole guilt on women who are considered seductive. Consequently, public
shearing allows a process of re–appropriation of the feminine bodies. It becomes the symbol for the
destruction of the guilty body, the desecration, which forbids the guilty women to have access to her
own femininity and sexuality. Through the process of shaving, the body becomes the reflection of
the "moral ugliness." In fact, because head hair expresses or manifests attractiveness and power, to
be bald deprives a woman of the ability to fit into our society, to be a woman in the public sphere.
Hair as a symbol of virility for men and attractiveness for women is found in widely separated
cultures throughout the ages and in all parts of the world. It is surprising to find such a difference of

Sexual Sadism In Serial Killers
Sexual sadism and fantasies Sexually motivated thrill and lust serial killers use sadism as an
expression of their hate for the world. These serial killers are particularly distasteful as they kill not
only for pleasure but also to sexually humiliate their victims. The prime reason that they sexually
torture and kill is to obtain sexual satisfaction and orgasm which they are unable to attain in any
other way. The sexualized component of the sadism is not always apparent, but when it is explicit, it
is especially heinous and often involves stabbing, beating, ripping, cutting and mutilation. The
aggressive attacks on the victim may be understood as symbolic expressions of the killer's hate for
the world. In cutting, stabbing and beating the killer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For these serial killers there is an unconscious allegiance to the internal criminal gang that seeks to
make all criminal destructive work effective. This allegiance is because, as indicated, early external
objects are perceived as bad and prosecutory. Moreover, the bad object is introjected and
internalized resulting in an inner world of not just self–loathing but also paranoid anxiety and
persecution. This means that both the outside world and the inner world are perceived as hateful and
persecutory, and any remains of a good internal object is overthrown and repressed ('by the gang').
This explains why some serial killers are paranoid – it is a defense against a (real and imagined)
persecuting and hateful world.
As a reminder, fantasies play a significant role in the lives of these serial killers and the acting out of
the killing is the acting out of fantasies (Prentky et al., 1989;

Throughout the novel, Simon remains unchanged in terms of morality, as others slowly turn to

corrupted and malevolent without ever thirsting for this power, and is therefore more evil than Jack.
Roger keeps to himself, much like Simon, and remains consistently evil throughout the novel. Near
the beginning, he "picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry–threw it to miss," held back by
"the taboo of the old life." Later, he did not miss and "with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned

boulder, "the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist." The main
symbol for the democracy, equality and justice was indirectly destroyed by Roger. To him, "Ralph
was a shock of hair and Piggy a bag of fat," thus dehumanizing and objectifying them. When Sam
and Eric were cornered by Jack's group of savages, Roger demonstrates his enjoyment for hurting
others by "[advancing] upon them as one wielding a nameless authority." It was not for the sake of
supremacy or control, but for unbridled sadistic pleasure. When Ralph finds Sam and Eric, they say

Sexual Components In Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber
Throughout the literature we have read in this class, several books and short stories have had subtle
sexual components. In Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber," there are several important themes
and characteristics that help give the reader the ability to understand the actions of both the narrator
and The Marquis, but sex and it's relation to power drives each character's actions and emotions. For
the Marquis, he finds all the power in the relationship by exemplifying sadistic behavior, constantly
mocking and ridiculing the narrator, and ultimately looking to find satisfaction in her pain and
potential death. The narrator parallels the Marquis' sadism with masochism, often finding

prevalent in the world, "The Bloody Chamber" was written after women's suffrage, in 1979. As soon
as ten years after the short story was published several works were also published that went against
the Freudian model of sadomasochism. In Jessica Benjamin's, The Bonds of Love, Benjamin
discusses the idea that women can actually control their own subordination, therefore making the
"passive" partner equally as dominant as the aggressor, which gets rid of the notion that the
dominant partner is always male. In "The Bloody Chamber," we only see the young girl as someone
who allows herself to gain no control over the power dynamic regarding the couple's relationship in
general. In fact, the only time we see the narrator stand up for herself, or even respond to the
Marquis' comments towards her, is at the very end of the story when she is stalling her death with
the hope that her mother will

Sexuality In Marsh's The Beetle
The female sadist in Marsh's The Beetle goes by various names while she remorselessly commits
her sadistic actions: the Beetle, the "Woman of Songs" (Marsh 241), Lessingham's "Oriental friend"
(178), and the Arab. Each form allows her to enact her sadistic fantasies and control in different
ways. As a beetle and a man, both represented as 'the Beetle', she commits something parallel to
male–on–male sexual assault against Robert Holt. In the form of a beetle, she mounts him, embraces
him, and touches his lips and bare skin, while he describes her as "some monstrous member" (51–
52). As the man, she prods him like a "beast ready for the butcher's stall", thrusts her fingers into his
mouth, and presses her "blubber lips" to his (57). The control ... Show more content on

The Woman of Songs perverts the "'natural' order" and thus personifies "ambiguous attitudes
towards female sexuality that precipitated the crisis in modern conceptions of gender" (Schaffner
181). Moore states that "the degeneration of the gender–inappropriate pervert was seen as sliding
back down the evolutionary ladder" (144). Thus, the "gender–inappropriate" Woman of Songs is
envisioned as degenerate, and is shown to literally regress to the form of an insect. Yet, the Woman
of Songs's degeneracy is also implicated in the idea that she is "very much a woman of her time, that
is, increasingly rebellious to the dominance of men" (145). In either case, it is a threat to the 'normal'
functioning of society that the Woman of Songs represents. As a female sadist, the Woman of Songs
does not fit within the fin de siècle gendered perversions, and consequently is presented as not
fitting within any divisions of both species and gender. Marsh's female sadist, the Woman of Songs,
embodies the confusion brought forth by the divergence from gender appropriate perversions, and is
thus seen as "a creature born neither of God nor man" (Marsh

Theories Of Gender Identity
Gender identity ailment is customarily referred to as transexuallism. Transvestism refers to the apply

Transvestism is a paraphilia for which the major characteristic is severe sexual urges and sexually

Sadism In Night And Fog
Assuming that directors make films on genocide to raise awareness and to move people to act for
justice, the films we have seen in class try to reflect that theory. Night and Fog is a 1955 French
documentary short film directed by Alain Resnais created ten years after to the liberation of Nazi
concentration camps. The film was composed of shots of the camps making it graphic in nature. It
alternates between the present and past using black and white and color shots. They show the
Auschwitz remnants while the narration is going on with the scenery. The issue of sadism is raised
upon the prisoners with things such as medical experimentation, torture, and prostitution. The
graphic scenes of the bodies and the chambers are disconcerting to say the least. I think the use of
the music along with black and white images are overused leaving the audience in shock, thus
raising full awareness. If it were up to me I would not use as much graphic images at he did. It is
one of the movies you cannot forget about due to the images that are engraved in your mind. Resnais
switches to color to and narrates with little to no music which blends well in order to give the
audience a break from the horrific images. The color shots are not vibrant so the translations from
black and white to color is not disturbing to the eye. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Paraphilia's Theory Of Sexual Deviance
Sexual deviance is considered any sexual activity that is different than the normal, acceptable sexual
activities of a society, but is vital for the person to experience arousal and orgasm (Sadock, 2007).
The activities that are considered deviant can change over time and be different in different
societies. These are also known as paraphilias. A paraphilia involves an extreme and continual
sexual interest in children, objects, animals, materials, etc. or harming oneself or others during
sexual activity. Sometimes the sexual interest focuses on the person's own interests while in others it
focuses on the target of the person's sexual interest. For one to be diagnosed with one of these

Medication is also helpful in reduction of fantasies and harmful behavior which is necessary for
those who participate in life threatening behaviors such as sexual asphyxiation (minddisorders.com).
Biological Theories of Sexual Deviance
Biological theories of sexual deviance focus on structural differences in the brain, the genetic and
chromosomal makeup, hormone levels, as well as defects in cerebral functioning. Although a
person's biological makeup does have a part in some paraphilias, those who research the causes have
yet to come to a conclusion on the exact reasoning behind them. It is thought that psychological
factors are more the central reasoning behind these behaviors and that some event or events that
occurred during childhood caused association of sexual pleasure with that event or object and a
paraphilia evolved. (Benuto, 2009).

Abstract
Masochism and sadism are very alike in nature. Masochism is a sexual perversion characterized by
pleasure in being subjected to pain or humiliation; especially by a loved object. Sadism is the
pleasure in being abused or dominated. Sadists have a taste for suffering. Masochism could be a
means of escaping from one's self. It could be a temporally extended identity. The awareness of
one's self is replaced by the focus on immediate present and on bodily sensations. Psychologists
have found that the principle feature of masochism such as pain, bondage, and humiliation help

In the past, masochists have been labeled as extremely disturbed, but recent studies show a
surprisingly different picture. Empirical observers think that practicing masochists are normal, at
least when it comes to their nonsexual activities.
Whether sexual masochism is considered pathological depends on whether one accepts the sexual
practices of masochists as symptoms. If someone does not judge the sexual patterns alone in these
masochist behaviors, then the majority of the people who are considered masochists appear to be
normal and healthy. It is said that participating in sadomasochistic relations is compatible with a
normal, sane, and even a successful life.
The prevailing theoretical position since Sigmund Freud has been that masochism is derived from
sadism. In some clinical experiments, sadism is possibly the main attraction. It is also possible that
the mentally ill are drawn to inflicting pain rather than receiving it. Most theorists have thought that
there is a strong link between masochism and sadism and have accentuated sadism. It is apparently
the more important and essential pattern. A lot of evidence contradicts these views. Masochism is far
more common than sadism. The number of submissive people outnumbers the number of dominant
people. The pattern in which one partner wants to dominate but the other partner is reluctant to
submit is very rare. The only study that

Examples Of Sadism In Othello
The critic, Jeffery Brown, believes that 'Sadism is, as Horney notes, ultimately rooted in the sadist's
feeling of helplessness. She writes "nobody pronounced sadistic trends who has not a profound
feeling of futility as regards his own life". This sense of hopelessness itself arises out of the
unconscious realisation of an unbridgeable gap between the individual's actual self and his falsely
elaborated view of what "he believes himself to be, or what at the time he feels he can or ought to
be."' Brown argues that Iago's motive for destroying Othello's relationship stems from the realisation
of having a falsely elaborated view of himself. Iago's belief in his promotion to lieutenant supports
this statement, 'three great ones of the city, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
R. Godfrey's view is quite different, he says that 'It is clear, however, that the jealousy by which Iago
stands possessed... a more comprehensive kind. It contains elements of sexual provocation, but it is
directed also and more powerfully against all those whose lives continue to be motivated, as his had
once been, by the conventions of love trust, honesty and goodness, and who continue on such a basis
to be happy and successful, where he himself has suffered and failed.' Here Godfrey is saying that
Iago's driving force for the manipulation of Othello is jealousy of the happiness Othello has and he
has lost, but this is refuted by evidence from the third scene of act one of the play when Iago clearly
states that he is manipulating Othello's marriage for 'sport' 'if thou canst cuckold him, thou dost
thyself a pleasure, me a sport' (1,3,360–361) Iago convinces Roderigo to cuckold Othello as they
will both benefit from it. Iago considered manipulation of Othello entertainment, like a toy to satisfy
his sadistic pleasure, the effects on people around him did not matter. The joy of manipulation until
pain is caused is a common trend of sadism, not jealousy. Being jealous is feeling or showing an
envious resentment of someone or their achievements, possessions, or perceived advantages and yes
although Iago is envious of Cassio's achievements of becoming lieutenant he is not jealous in
general because... Godfrey argues Iago wants to destroy the success others experience in the areas
he has failed in, including marriage due to jealousy. However, they don't take into consideration
when Jeffery Y. Brown reasons that Iago projected his feelings of self–contempt and hopelessness,
so others were not able to feel happiness and to assuage some of the pain he feels. Hence his desire
to destroy Othello's marriage being due to sadism. I disagree with Godfrey as I believe the motive of
Iago is his sadistic nature that causes him to wish misery upon all, as sadism is a

Sexual Sadism Essay
Mokros, Schilling, Weiss, Nitschke and Eher (2014) define sexual sadism as "a paraphilia in which
the infliction of pain or the humiliation of others is experienced as sexually gratifying" (p. 138).
Healey et al (2013) define sexual sadism as the sadist being sexually aroused by the use of violent or
humiliating behavior and the reaction seen in the victim to this behavior. Prevalence of sexual
sadism includes 1 out of 363 men in a community sample, 2.2 % reported that they practiced
sadomasochistic role play in the previous year, and between 13% and 54% admitted to sexual
fantasies involving domination (Mokros et al, 2014). Examples of items in the Sexual Sadism Scale

Their aim was to "determine whether the crime scene behaviors associated with sexual sadism are
the same for rapists and sexual murderers" (Healey et al, 2013, p. 403). For example, one way to
measure the sexual interest is to use phallometric assessment which measures sexual arousal to
violence by using various audiotaped descriptions of violence and then measuring the level of
arousal through the changes in the volume/circumference of the penis (2013). Sexual homicide as
defined for the Healey et al study involves meeting at least one of the following: (a) victim's attire or
lack of attire, (b) exposure of the sexual parts of the victim's body, (c) sexual positioning of the
victim's body, (d) insertion of foreign objects into the victim's body cavities, (e) evidence of sexual

Comparing Cask Of Amontillado And William Blake's A Poison
Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" and William Blake's "A Poison Tree" are both tales of
vengeful murder and a numbness to death. In Poe's story a man named Montresor is insulted by
Fortunato. Montresor seems this unacceptable and seeks out to kill him. Blake's poem depicts a man
who has fallen due to consuming a stolen poison apple. Both Blake and Poe use characterization to
convert the theme that sadism does not occur naturally, rather it is the result of another's actions.
Poe's use of characterization conveys the theme that sadism is unnatural and does not occur solely in
one's self. In "Cask of Amontillado" Montresor has been insulted by Fortunato, "The thousand of
injuries i had borne as best i could; but when he ventured upon insult, i vowed revenge" (Poe).
Montresor cared little of Fortunato's endeavors until he insulted him.. He was provoked and then
sought out to seek his revenge and kill Fortunato. His sadistic thoughts were developed due to
Fortunato actions towards him, not due to his natural behavior. Poe characterized Montresor to feed
into his dark sadistic actions once a reason was valuable enough. Blake conveys the theme of
another's actions being the reason for sadistic tendencies through characterization as well. The poem

Masochism is a general paraphilia, and is an abnormal or unnatural sexual attraction. It is recurring
sexually arousing fantasies, urges, or behaviors in which the person is beaten, bound, or humiliated
in order to achieve sexual excitement (Sexual Disorders 2001). Bondage, blindfolding, and use of
urine and feces are some methods used by people with sexual masochism. These urges or behaviors
must last at least six months for a diagnosis to be made. The most common fantasy is that of being

Treatment is aimed at finding and working through the underlying cause, this is done with
psychotherapy and a proper medication regimen. Both treatment modalities hopefully will reduce
masochistic behavior particularly the dangerous kind. There are two particularly important therapies
to treat sexual masochism, cognitive–behavioral therapy and orgasmic reconditioning. Cognitive–
behavioral therapy helps the patient control the undesirable behaviors by avoiding situations that
may generate initial desires. Orgasmic reconditioning is used by letting patient masturbate to normal
stimulus but prior to orgasm, the patient is told to concentrate on a more acceptable fantasy
(Treatment for Sexual Masochism 2005). Types of medications used are Clomipramine, a tricyclic
antidepressant, Fluoxetine, a SSRI, and the hormone Depo–Provera. These work by decreasing the
level of circulating testosterone, therefore reducing sex drive and aggression.
People diagnosed with sexual masochism often have coexisting paraphilias such as coprophilia, and
urophilia. Coprophilia is defined as an abnormal often obsessive interest in excrement, especially
the use of feces for sexual excitement. Urophilia is defined as a sexual variation in which the person
derives sexual excitement from urine or urination (Coprophilia & Urophilia 2004).
In summary, sexual masochism is a psychiatric disorder of an abnormal or unnatural attraction. It

Sadism in the Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe
The tell–tale Sadist:
Sadism and Masochism in "The tell–tale heart"
Many of Poe's tales portray characters which intently harm other creatures or people and enjoy the
process of doing so. This tendency which Poe himself called "the spirit of perverseness"(Poe 10) in
The Black Cat is described as the need to cause pain to other being without any reason, evil per se.
However, from a psychological point of view, this spirit of perverseness would be labeled as sadism
and its source may be traced by making a deep analysis of the character's psyche. It will be posed
that the character participant narrator in the tell–tale heart does not kill the old man as an act of pure
evilness or spirit of perverseness, but rather the source of his/her ... Show more content on

This does not mean that sadism is a common feature of men's sexual behaviour, it is a sexual
aberration but gender influences this tendency. Besides aggression, according to Lacan, is
represented through certain images "for example castration, mutilation, devouring" (Glowinsky,
2001) and it should be born in mind that the narrator mutilates his victim in order to hide it, which
provides extra evidence of the narrator's aggressiveness. In addition, a homosexual love for the old
man would create a greater conflict in the mind of the narrator and a greater difficulty to fulfill his
sexual desire in a normal way.
"It can often be recognized that the masochism is nothing but a continuation of the sadism turning
against one's own person in which the latter at first takes the place of the sexual object." ( Freud,
1914)
Indeed, masochism seems to derive from the sadist drive. It is usually believed that victimizer
becomes victim given certain circumstances and this may provoke pleasure as well. In the
philosophy of composition, Poe unintentionally provides a good definition of masochism by talking
about "the human thirst for self–torture." Indicating the eagerness of men to feel displeasure or even
pain, this may be done in innocent ways (by suffering through fiction) or by remaining or looking
for situation that might be painful. In the tale–tell heart, the murderer after having tormented the old

marginalized prostitutes with chronic drug addiction, from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside area

Serial murder is defined as the murder of at least three victims accompanied with an intermittent
"cooling off" period in between. Often during the "cooling off" period the serial killer fantasizes
about his next potential victim and contrives a plan to enact said fantasy (Simons, 2001). The term
"serial killer" was introduced into the English lexicon in the 1970's and used to describe individuals
who committed a series of murders under these pretenses. The typical age of onset for serial murder
is usually in the mid–to–late twenties (Arndt, Hietpas, and Kim, 2004). It is difficult to determine
when exactly Robert Pickton began his string of killing since much of his early life remains
shrouded in mystery. The best way to examine the frequency of Pickton's murders and the duration
of the "cooling off" period between them then, is to examine data of women reported missing from
the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver. Using this data, it can be reasonably assumed that
Pickton began his murders (at least within the context of his general modus operandi) sometime in
the late 1970's or early 1980's (The Pickton Trial, CBC.ca/news). Using the missing women data
along with evidence found on the Pickton farm, it is seen that the murders increased in frequency
with a much smaller "cooling off" period throughout the 1990's and early 2000's before his eventual
arrest in 2002.
Traumatizing events during childhood have been shown to be potential precursors to serial

Fantasy And Sadism Research Paper
Serial sexual murderers represent a small proportion of serial murderers. According to the Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI), serial homicides account for no more than one percent of all murders
committed in the U.S. Based on recent FBI crime statistics, there are approximately 15,000 murders
annually (i.e. 150 victims of serial murder per year) in the United States. The FBI estimates that
there are 25 to 50 serial killers operating throughout the U.S. at any given time (U.S. Government,
2008). Of all serial murderers, 60% are sexual murderers (Geberth, 1995). Therefore, serial sexual

According to Prentky et al. (1989) a fantasy may function as a substitute for behavior. In fact, it has
been argued that among healthy individuals, sadistic fantasies may actually aid in releasing anger
(Kaplan, 1979). The fantasy temporarily discharges the anger, thereby allowing the expression of
sexual feelings. The critical question regarding the role of fantasy and sadism is, "what are the
disinhibitory factors that encourage the translation of symbolic activity (e.g., the paraphilia) or
cognitive activity (e.g., fantasies) into reality?" (Prentky et al., 1989, p.890). In other words, how
does sexual sadism transform into serial sexual homicide? This paper will examine sexual sadism

appreciates this. But his indifference to this shows that he does not mind having a good foot into the
kingdom of God, despite being a worker of the Devil.
How does Mephostophilis unravel the conflict and foreshadow the fall?
Through Mephostophilis, Marlowe is able to bring out the core conflict in the play, that is, Faustus
versus Fate. Mephostophilis clearly reveals the unfavourable parts of hell to Faustus, so Faustus
knows the consequences and ramification of his decision; there is no grey area. It is due to
Mephostophilis' poignant honesty that Faustus questions his actions and his inner conflict is
exposed. Marlowe emphasizes this with the help of the Good Angel and Bad Angel, as they may be
perceived to be the literal embodiment of his conscience.
Mephostophilis may thus be considered as Faustus' advisor on the matters of

Taking a Look at Sexual Sadism
One of the clearest definitions of sexual sadism comes from a man who kidnapped, kept captive,
sodomized, raped and even murdered many victims in several states across the nation over a certain
period of time. "Sadism: The wish to inflict pain on others is not the essence of sadism one essential
impulse to have complete mastery over another person to make him/her a helpless object of our will
to become the absolute ruler over her, to become her God, to do with her as one pleases. To
humiliate her, to enslave her, are means to this end, and the most important radical aim is to make
her suffer since there is no greater power over another person than that of inflicting pain on her to
force her to undergo suffering without her being able to defend herself. The pleasure in the complete
domination over another person is the very essence of the sadistic drive." (Diaz, Hazelwood,
Warren, 1990). By the end of this short essay you will have a better understanding of what a sexual
sadist is, their qualifications, their characteristics, and treatments. Sexual sadist are usually males
who become sexually aroused by the thought or act of inflicting suffering on others by dominating,
restraining, blindfolding, cutting, strangling, mutilating or even killing the victim accompanied by a
sexual act. The term comes from the famous Marquis de Sade who tortured others in order to satisfy
his own sexual desires. Sadist usually imagine that they have complete control over their victim,

Demonology, Criminology, the Pathological Perspective, and Sadism No matter what happens in our
lives, our bodies will always be surrounded or involved in numerous acts of deviance. Whether
someone acts under the influence of the devil, or if we do something to bring pleasure to ourselves,
something will be seen as deviant behavior. Whether it is caused or chosen, deviant behavior is a
regular part of life. Every deviant has logic behind his or her behavior. Whether they do it for power,
control, hatred, or anger, there is some type of reasoning for their actions. Why demonic deviants
seen as evil? Why is sadism silenced? Why is deviance looked at as a bad thing? Demonic deviance
rose in the middle as a way to describe those who were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Marvin Wolfgang's research, many see the point of the idea of the three–strike system, only
severely punishing criminals after their third felony. California, who was one of the first states to
adopt this law, saw their crime rate significantly drop within a decade. Since then many other states
have adopted the same system. The theorists in today's society are deciding that we should resort to
deterrence, and rational punishment as opposed rehabilitation. We are resorting the ideas of James.
Q. Wilson, who believes that deviants know that if they're caught they will be punished. This is
Wilson's "new realism" (Images of Deviance and Social Control 84). Even more prevalent though,
in today's society is the pathological perspective. A large amount of medical discoveries are being
made today to help prevent, or control diseases. People are starting to become more and more
comfortable with the idea of the pathological perspective. One of the most recent findings is
hyperkinesis. A child who experiences symptoms such as "hyperactivity (excessive motor activity),
short attention span, and restless or fidgety behavior" is to be diseased rather than bad (Images of
Deviance and Social Control 146). Even cures for small pox and polio have been discovered. Today,
more and more research is being funded in order to find the causes to deviance. The pathological
perspective is the most accepted theory for deviance today. Deviance

Shawshank Redemption Disorder

  • 1. Shawshank Redemption Disorder The film I watched was called The Shawshank Redemption. The film is about a young Banker named Andy, who was wrongfully convicted. He was convicted of killing his wife and lover, sentenced and sent to Shawshank prison. He is very smart and makes one friend, Red who is another inmate. Andy is smart and overhears a guard talking about a financial situation he has. He convinced the guard to let Andy help him and in return he and his friends can some beers. This would slowly lead to a mutual and unspoken agreement between the warden and Andy. He would solve all their financial problems for the prison. But this did not help Andy with other problems he was facing. Over the first two years of his incarceration, Andy works in the prison laundry. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meeting criteria for antisocial personality disorder, Sexual sadism disorder and homosexual behaviors. For people like Bogs treatment is limited for adults in any of these. They often do not identify as needing treatment. Homosexual is not seen as a disorder and many identify as gay or lesbian as their sexual preference and lifestyle. It does not mean it's a problem. For Sexual Sadism it is a problem if it cause impairment or distress. People who fit the criteria for sexual sadism may not seek treatment on their own due to feelings of shame or concerns about being reported. Behavior therapy is a common approach to treating sexual sadism patients. The individual learns how to change their arousal patterns to more socially accepted ones. For antisocial disorder most think incarceration is the way to prevent these behaviors resulting in no treatment. The treatment and therapy is usually court–ordered. • 3. Sadomasochism Essay Sadomasochism Sadomasochism is a sexually deviant behavior that is practiced by many people within today's society. It is the combination of two paraphilias, sadism and masochism, which are usually always linked together. An occasional mild or light form of sadomasochism (or S& M for short), is considerably common among the general population. Many people often enjoy being mildly dominant or submissive during lovemaking. They believe that it makes the experience more enjoyable. But when S&M becomes the dominating feature of a person's sexuality, that is when he or she is considered deviant. Unlike other paraphilias, sadomasochism includes a large population of women as well as men. They are nearly equally balanced in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hypoxyphilia is a fairly common practice where a person chooses to enhance their sexual arousal by voluntarily depriving himself or herself of oxygen. In order to become deprived of oxygen, people usually use plastic bags, rope, or their partner's hands to choke their partner once consent is given. This practice is dangerous and can possibly even result in a tragic death (Rathus, Nevid, &Fichner– Rathus, p545–546). Masochism's counterpart, sadism, is the complete opposite for many reasons. Sadism is a parphilia, which is characterized by the association of sexual satisfaction with the infliction of pain or humiliation onto others. The term sadism refers to a French author and philosopher, Marquis de Sade (1740––1814). Marquis de Sade wrote stories of people who became sexually aroused by inflicting pain or humiliation on others. Some of his best known works are Justine (published in 1791) and Juliette (published in 1797). A sadist receives sexual gratification by role–playing. They usually play the authority figure who inflicts pain, humiliates, disciplines, and plays master to another person (Ernulf&Innala, p637). Most sadists hurt and humiliate willing partners who are usually masochists. A small minority of sadists may even attempt to stalk and attack their unwilling victims. This is a very dangerous and harmful to its participants. In fact, Sigmund Freud wrote extensively on sadism. In his research, he recognized its existence in the individual and ... • 5. Comparing Dr. Moreau And The Beetle In two fin de siècle novels, H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896) and Robert Marsh's The Beetle (1897), sadism plays a central role. However, while The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Beetle both include characters that exemplify sadism, the novels differ greatly in the characters' portrayals due to the sadistic characters' gender. The sadistic Moreau is presented as Machiavellian tyrant. However, because Moreau's gender aligns with ideas of gendered sadism, the novel does not portray him as degenerate, monstrous, nor ambiguous. In contrast, The Beetle tampers with the sadistic female body, which leads to doubt of her true sex and form and leaves her as an undecidable, degenerate monstrosity. The sadistic characters' descriptions in The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Beetle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A perplexing amalgamation of culture and nature led to the pathologizing of sexual perversion by 19th century "sexologists" (Peakman 1). Richard von Krafft–Ebing first introduced the term 'sadism' in his book Psychopathic Sexualis (1886). Sadism includes the experience of mental and physical suffering as pleasurable (Holguin 1285). Later defined as one of the "modern perversions" by Sigmund Freud, it was traditionally seen as existing within the male domain (Schaffner 182), and as a type of "male sexual cruelty" (Wayne 542). Furthering Krafft–Ebing's work, Freud suggests that sadism's "life preserving aggression" in males is natural and biologically determined (Holguin 1286). In contrast, masochism, essentially the opposite of sadism, can be seen as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Hangman's Horror: Roger, Sadism, and Psychopathy in... With an understanding of the inherent darkness in all men and first–hand experience with savagery and violence in World War II, William Golding used Lord of the Flies as not only a historical allegory and a pulpit from which to address the darkness in all men, but also as a metaphor and a example that no one is exempt from human nature. Golding's characters in Lord of the Flies reflect this idea greatly, but none more so than Roger. Throughout Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the character of Roger to show the follies of mankind and the ability of all people to turn to savagery, as well as the inherent nature of man and society's internalized acceptance of violence, stemming from Golding's own experiences with the subject. Golding created ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, this chapter also shows that he is fully "aware of the lingering social conditioning" (Koopmans) of his life before the boys were stranded on the island; "Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry – threw it to miss. The stone, that token of preposterous time, bounced five yards to Henry's right and fell in the water. Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger's arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins" (Golding 56). • 9. Dahmer Sadism Psychology"). He had become very distant, and started to show a very low tolerance to frustration. Dahmer also showed signs of two different paraphilias: sadism and necrophilia, along with cannibalism. Sadism, a philia found in all of Dahmer's cases, is defined as sexual arousal from inflicting pain (Berger). Due to his low tolerance of frustration, he would take it out as physical torture to fulfil his sexual desires. Although Dahmer himself has said before he did not mean to hurt anyone, he always had to be in control. Besides sadism, Dahmer partook of necrophilia. Necrophilia is having a sexual attraction to corpses (Berger). Dahmer indulged in sexual activities with at least five out of seventeen victims. Although his sexual fantasies ... • 11. Nazi Psychology In Theodor W. Adorno's Maus One key theme of Theodor W. Adorno's chapter Education After Auschwitz is that society still encourages parts of Nazi psychology. There are still people who are willing to blindly follow leaders that could create similar things to Auschwitz through barbarism and sadism. History and the present are so intertwined that to expect change for the future, one must unpack this past. The book Maus, by Art Spiegelman, highlights that theme of Adorno's, by showing, on a microscale, how, in Vladek's story, that Nazi psychology has not ended. Lord Of The Flies Sadism Essay William Golding's The Lord of the Flies: A Sadistic Society of Self–Destruction (and What We May Do to Fix It) According to Golding, modern humanity has suffered from a form of self–deception based back to the dawn of the caveman age; that deception being, groundbreakingly enough, society's failure to recognize our sadistic tendencies, wishes for personal gain, and preemptiveness to kill– qualities of which have been entrenched in the sung expressions, arts, and politics of a contemporary populace. This statement issues the resistance which wields a functioning society from full–on "ferality", otherwise identified as a tedious though triumphant method of an orderly lifestyle. Golding elaborates further by characterizing the stone as "a token of preposterous time"(Golding, pg 62), or an experience of human activity which is nearing cessation of remembrance. Though it also may suggest the damaging effects of human frivolity, as activities of no productive use (especially in children as seen in the book) may fail to maintain proper conduct through morally questionable experimentation. By identifying the meanings of these symbolic excerpts, we can calculate Golding's message of society's desperate need for order at all costs, and understand the circumstances which usher disorder, such as Roger's. As witnessed through the course of human history, it shouldn't strike us as odd that many figures of power have treated their privilege of authority as a cherished treasure rather than a sacrificial burden. As such, Golding continues to emphasize human faults by emphasizing the impact of what amassed power can do to people. He introduces characters such as Ralph, who attempt to sustain their democratic leadership by any means, even if several hardships are found deterring. On the other hand, Jack Merridew may be considered as an inverse resemblance to Ralph, instead using the excuse of unpromising events as a reason to become gradually awry and aggressive. ... • 15. The Relationship Between Sadism And Its Effects On Children Sadism is defined as the derivation of sexual pleasure from the infliction of pain, suffering and/or humiliation upon another person. The pain and suffering of the victim, which may be both physical and psychological, is pivotal to the sexual arousal and pleasure. According to Bernard (1933) sadism hence represents a pathological intensification of the masculine mental character. Characteristics of sadism according to DSM IV (2000) is as follows: having over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving acts (real, not simulated) in which the psychological or physical suffering including humiliation of the victim is sexually exciting to the person, as well as the person has acted on these urges with a non–consenting person, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty. Introduction Sexual sadism is noticed primarily in males and generally starts with puberty, in spite of the fact that sadistic behavior may be manifested prematurely in children. In all male cases, it becomes obvious by early adulthood. According to Hucker (2009), sexual sadism may start off with fantasies and, in some cases, these may never be acted upon or, be acted out in the more mild forms of consensual relationships. In non–consensual cases, the behavior usually continues and often escalates over time as the perpetrator experiences a need for increased violence in order to stimulate the ... Essay On Sadism And Masochism Having a desire to inflict pain on another person as a means of satisfying a sexual desire is not an act that many would think normal compared to the general population. Most people find it repulsive when pain is inflicted on another person, but there are some people that thrive when physical or psychological suffering is applied to another person because it fulfills fantasies of torment (Hyde & DeLamater, 2017). The sexualized component of the sadism is not always apparent, but when it is explicit, it is especially heinous and often involves stabbing, beating, ripping, cutting and mutilation. This means that both the outside world and the inner world are perceived as hateful and persecutory, and any remains of a good internal object is overthrown and repressed ('by the gang'). This explains why some serial killers are paranoid – it is a defense against a (real and imagined) persecuting and hateful world. There is no difference between the digital and real–life version. Walton is able to recognize that what is being done to Tommy is morally wrong and he is not able to let himself continue being insubordinate despite it just being a computer simulation of pain. This shows the empathy of us as a human race, and that moral bounds are not confined to our physical reality. If we did not feel bad that Tommy is thrown out the airlock, then there would be no issue with what Daly is doing, however, we do feel bad, and therefore what Daly is doing is wrong. We do not inherently feel as if a digital personality is different than that of a physical personality. As long as the digital personality is fully flushed out then there is no difference. This retains that what Daly does to Tommy is wrong and should be discouraged by society as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Paraphilia's Theory Of Sexual Deviance Sexual deviance is considered any sexual activity that is different than the normal, acceptable sexual activities of a society, but is vital for the person to experience arousal and orgasm (Sadock, 2007). The activities that are considered deviant can change over time and be different in different societies. These are also known as paraphilias. A paraphilia involves an extreme and continual sexual interest in children, objects, animals, materials, etc. or harming oneself or others during sexual activity. Although a person's biological makeup does have a part in some paraphilias, those who research the causes have yet to come to a conclusion on the exact reasoning behind them. It is thought that psychological factors are more the central reasoning behind these behaviors and that some event or events that occurred during childhood caused association of sexual pleasure with that event or object and a paraphilia evolved. The Psycological Effects of Masochism and Sadism The Psychological Causes and Effects of Masochism and Sadism Katelyn Mueller Florida Institute of Technology Human Sexuality December 6, 2015 Abstract Masochism and sadism are very alike in nature. Masochism is a sexual perversion characterized by pleasure in being subjected to pain or humiliation; especially by a loved object. Sadism is the pleasure in being abused or dominated. Sadists have a taste for suffering. Masochism could be a means of escaping from one's self. It could be a temporally extended identity. In the past, masochists have been labeled as extremely disturbed, but recent studies show a surprisingly different picture. Empirical observers think that practicing masochists are normal, at least when it comes to their nonsexual activities. Whether sexual masochism is considered pathological depends on whether one accepts the sexual practices of masochists as symptoms. If someone does not judge the sexual patterns alone in these masochist behaviors, then the majority of the people who are considered masochists appear to be normal and healthy. It is said that participating in sadomasochistic relations is compatible with a normal, sane, and even a successful life. The prevailing theoretical position since Sigmund Freud has been that masochism is derived from sadism. In some clinical experiments, sadism is possibly the main attraction. It is also possible that the mentally ill are drawn to inflicting pain rather than receiving it. Most theorists have thought that there is a strong link between masochism and sadism and have accentuated sadism. It is apparently the more important and essential pattern. A lot of evidence contradicts these views. Masochism is far more common than sadism. The number of submissive people outnumbers the number of dominant people. The pattern in which one partner wants to dominate but the other partner is reluctant to submit is very rare. The only study that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She writes "nobody pronounced sadistic trends who has not a profound feeling of futility as regards his own life". This sense of hopelessness itself arises out of the unconscious realisation of an unbridgeable gap between the individual's actual self and his falsely elaborated view of what "he believes himself to be, or what at the time he feels he can or ought to be."' Brown argues that Iago's motive for destroying Othello's relationship stems from the realisation of having a falsely elaborated view of himself. Iago's belief in his promotion to lieutenant supports this statement, 'three great ones of the city, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... R. Here Godfrey is saying that Iago's driving force for the manipulation of Othello is jealousy of the happiness Othello has and he has lost, but this is refuted by evidence from the third scene of act one of the play when Iago clearly states that he is manipulating Othello's marriage for 'sport' 'if thou canst cuckold him, thou dost thyself a pleasure, me a sport' (1,3,360–361) Iago convinces Roderigo to cuckold Othello as they will both benefit from it. Iago considered manipulation of Othello entertainment, like a toy to satisfy his sadistic pleasure, the effects on people around him did not matter. The joy of manipulation until pain is caused is a common trend of sadism, not jealousy. Being jealous is feeling or showing an envious resentment of someone or their achievements, possessions, or perceived advantages and yes although Iago is envious of Cassio's achievements of becoming lieutenant he is not jealous in general because... Sexual Sadism Essay Mokros, Schilling, Weiss, Nitschke and Eher (2014) define sexual sadism as "a paraphilia in which the infliction of pain or the humiliation of others is experienced as sexually gratifying" (p. 138). Healey et al (2013) define sexual sadism as the sadist being sexually aroused by the use of violent or humiliating behavior and the reaction seen in the victim to this behavior. Prevalence of sexual sadism includes 1 out of 363 men in a community sample, 2.2 % reported that they practiced sadomasochistic role play in the previous year, and between 13% and 54% admitted to sexual fantasies involving domination (Mokros et al, 2014). Comparing Cask Of Amontillado And William Blake's A Poison Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" and William Blake's "A Poison Tree" are both tales of vengeful murder and a numbness to death. In Poe's story a man named Montresor is insulted by Fortunato. Montresor seems this unacceptable and seeks out to kill him. Blake's poem depicts a man who has fallen due to consuming a stolen poison apple. Both Blake and Poe use characterization to convert the theme that sadism does not occur naturally, rather it is the result of another's actions. Poe's use of characterization conveys the theme that sadism is unnatural and does not occur solely in one's self. In "Cask of Amontillado" Montresor has been insulted by Fortunato, "The thousand of injuries i had borne as best i could; but when he ventured upon insult, i vowed revenge" (Poe). Montresor cared little of Fortunato's endeavors until he insulted him.. He was provoked and then sought out to seek his revenge and kill Fortunato. His sadistic thoughts were developed due to Fortunato actions towards him, not due to his natural behavior. Poe characterized Montresor to feed into his dark sadistic actions once a reason was valuable enough. Blake conveys the theme of another's actions being the reason for sadistic tendencies through characterization as well. The poem "A Poison Tree" tells of a man whose anger festers until he ... It is recurring sexually arousing fantasies, urges, or behaviors in which the person is beaten, bound, or humiliated in order to achieve sexual excitement (Sexual Disorders 2001). Bondage, blindfolding, and use of urine and feces are some methods used by people with sexual masochism. These urges or behaviors must last at least six months for a diagnosis to be made. Both treatment modalities hopefully will reduce masochistic behavior particularly the dangerous kind. There are two particularly important therapies to treat sexual masochism, cognitive–behavioral therapy and orgasmic reconditioning. Cognitive– behavioral therapy helps the patient control the undesirable behaviors by avoiding situations that may generate initial desires. Orgasmic reconditioning is used by letting patient masturbate to normal stimulus but prior to orgasm, the patient is told to concentrate on a more acceptable fantasy (Treatment for Sexual Masochism 2005). Types of medications used are Clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, Fluoxetine, a SSRI, and the hormone Depo–Provera. These work by decreasing the level of circulating testosterone, therefore reducing sex drive and aggression. People diagnosed with sexual masochism often have coexisting paraphilias such as coprophilia, and urophilia. Coprophilia is defined as an abnormal often obsessive interest in excrement, especially the use of feces for sexual excitement. Urophilia is defined as a sexual variation in which the person derives sexual excitement from urine or urination (Coprophilia & Urophilia 2004). Sadism in the Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe The tell–tale Sadist: Sadism and Masochism in "The tell–tale heart" Many of Poe's tales portray characters which intently harm other creatures or people and enjoy the process of doing so. This tendency which Poe himself called "the spirit of perverseness"(Poe 10) in The Black Cat is described as the need to cause pain to other being without any reason, evil per se. However, from a psychological point of view, this spirit of perverseness would be labeled as sadism and its source may be traced by making a deep analysis of the character's psyche. It will be posed that the character participant narrator in the tell–tale heart does not kill the old man as an act of pure evilness or spirit of perverseness, but rather the source of his/her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This does not mean that sadism is a common feature of men's sexual behaviour, it is a sexual aberration but gender influences this tendency. Besides aggression, according to Lacan, is represented through certain images "for example castration, mutilation, devouring" (Glowinsky, 2001) and it should be born in mind that the narrator mutilates his victim in order to hide it, which provides extra evidence of the narrator's aggressiveness. In addition, a homosexual love for the old man would create a greater conflict in the mind of the narrator and a greater difficulty to fulfill his sexual desire in a normal way. "It can often be recognized that the masochism is nothing but a continuation of the sadism turning against one's own person in which the latter at first takes the place of the sexual object." ( Freud, 1914) Indeed, masochism seems to derive from the sadist drive. It is usually believed that victimizer becomes victim given certain circumstances and this may provoke pleasure as well. In the philosophy of composition, Poe unintentionally provides a good definition of masochism by talking about "the human thirst for self–torture." Indicating the eagerness of men to feel displeasure or even pain, this may be done in innocent ways (by suffering through fiction) or by remaining or looking for situation that might be painful. Although convicted for the murders of six victims, physical and forensic evidence for thirty–three women was uncovered at Pickton's Port Coquitlam pig farm which served as the crime scene for his murders. Numerous other missing women, mostly marginalized prostitutes with chronic drug addiction, from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside area remain unaccounted for. Serial murder is defined as the murder of at least three victims accompanied with an intermittent "cooling off" period in between. Often during the "cooling off" period the serial killer fantasizes about his next potential victim and contrives a plan to enact said fantasy (Simons, 2001). The term "serial killer" was introduced into the English lexicon in the 1970's and used to describe individuals who committed a series of murders under these pretenses. The typical age of onset for serial murder is usually in the mid–to–late twenties (Arndt, Hietpas, and Kim, 2004). It is difficult to determine when exactly Robert Pickton began his string of killing since much of his early life remains shrouded in mystery. The best way to examine the frequency of Pickton's murders and the duration of the "cooling off" period between them then, is to examine data of women reported missing from the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver. Using this data, it can be reasonably assumed that Pickton began his murders (at least within the context of his general modus operandi) sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's (The Pickton Trial, CBC.ca/news). Using the missing women data along with evidence found on the Pickton farm, it is seen that the murders increased in frequency with a much smaller "cooling off" period throughout the 1990's and early 2000's before his eventual arrest in 2002. (1989) a fantasy may function as a substitute for behavior. In fact, it has been argued that among healthy individuals, sadistic fantasies may actually aid in releasing anger (Kaplan, 1979). The critical question regarding the role of fantasy and sadism is, "what are the disinhibitory factors that encourage the translation of symbolic activity (e.g., the paraphilia) or cognitive activity (e.g., fantasies) into reality?" (Prentky et al., 1989, p.890). In other words, how does sexual sadism transform into serial sexual homicide? This paper will examine sexual sadism disorder in relation to serial murder. Taking a Look at Sexual Sadism One of the clearest definitions of sexual sadism comes from a man who kidnapped, kept captive, sodomized, raped and even murdered many victims in several states across the nation over a certain period of time. "Sadism: The wish to inflict pain on others is not the essence of sadism one essential impulse to have complete mastery over another person to make him/her a helpless object of our will to become the absolute ruler over her, to become her God, to do with her as one pleases. To humiliate her, to enslave her, are means to this end, and the most important radical aim is to make her suffer since there is no greater power over another person than that of inflicting pain on her to force her to undergo suffering without her being able to defend herself. The pleasure in the complete domination over another person is the very essence of the sadistic drive." (Diaz, Hazelwood, Warren, 1990). By the end of this short essay you will have a better understanding of what a sexual sadist is, their qualifications, their characteristics, and treatments. Sexual sadist are usually males who become sexually aroused by the thought or act of inflicting suffering on others by dominating, restraining, blindfolding, cutting, strangling, mutilating or even killing the victim accompanied by a sexual act.
