The topics covered in these few weeks were "what is madness?", "psychoanalytic and
psychodynamic approaches towards madness" and the "biomedical perspectives on mental illness".
One of the lectures that I found very interesting is the lecture on psychoanalytic and psychodynamic
approaches towards madness. In that lecture, we also learnt about defense mechanisms towards
distress or unhappy events in life. They are categorized into "primitive", "less primitive" and
"mature" defense mechanisms. Undoubtedly, mature defense mechanisms are better, as they are
more effective in the long term. However, when I reflect upon my own actions, unsurprisingly, most

I was curious of whether there are actual physiological or pathological observations on patients who
are suffering with mental illness. I was also interested in the scientific evidence (if there it exists) of
mental illness. Guest lecturer, Dr. Chui, had covered topics including the diagnostic approaches and
models adapted towards mental disorders, a brief anatomy of the human brain, depression and
schizophrenia.
I consider myself as a person who is quite scientific. I originally thought that every disease or
disorder must have a biological and scientific explanation to it, and I didn't understand the need of a
bio–psycho–social approach to mental disorders. Other branches in medicine adopt the biomedical
model in diagnosing the different diseases and it worked fine for them. So why can't it be applied in
the field of psychiatry? I had thought that mental disorders were solely caused by imbalances of

Involuntary psychiatric commitment has been like a pendulum, sometimes in favor as a government
policy to treat mental illness, and other times not. Mental illness treatment has been evolving
throughout history. Society once believed that mental illness was due to a reversed to an animalistic
level of consciousness, possession of demons, a sinful soul, or a chemical imbalance. The medical

standard outpatient treatment and increased criminal incarceration of persons with mental illness is

There are many ways to hurt someone with a mental illness and criticism is not something that
becomes prevented when a person is struggling with a mental illness. Even, though we are often
criticized within our life, those who fight for mental health issues can take criticism to the point
where the person may fall into a broader stage than what he/she was into before. Criticism is not the

Her father was noted by the town to be overprotective and turned away all of Emily's suitors. The

services to the same extent as physical health services, if they were covered at all. The reasons for
the discrimination in health insurance vary, but mental illnesses historically have not been well

biologically based diseases that affect the mind and body just like any other disease that has solely
physical manifestations. A stigma is said to occur when people view something in a negative way

Take a step back and imagine if our society blamed humans for having diabetes, cancer, or even
Alzheimer's? That sounds terrible and seems like nothing someone should be blamed for, but yet it
seems to be acceptable to blame someone for having a mental illness. Growing up I lived in the
small town of Hot Springs, Arkansas and then I found myself re–locating to Conway, Arkansas
before the start of my freshman year in college. I always remember people telling me "these will be
the best years of your life," but college is much different from what I thought. It is not like what you
see on the movies and it is not constantly laughing and a walk in the park. College to me is sleepless
nights because of all the homework I have to obtain the grade I want. It is also professors not being
understanding and unrealistic and not taking a step back to think how students feel. College is
making sure my grades are high enough to keep scholarships for the next semester, so that I am able
to attend college. Mental health is something that has always been in the back of mind, but now that
I am in college it is something I deal with every day. I never thought of myself as "depressed" or
"mentally ill," but college has made me feel like no matter how hard I study my grades will never be
to my standards, it has made me feel like staying up all night studying is perfectly normal and that

It is well known that homelessness is an issue around the world. There are many reasons why men,
women, and adolescences are suffering with being homeless. Nevertheless, the issues these human
beings are dealing with day to day for the fight for survival. In fact, the problem of having no place
to call home is enough to swallow. Without a doubt, one major issue most of the homeless
population deals with everyday is mental illness. There have been studies that look at mental illness/
homelessness and the connection with violent/non–violent crimes. Some studies looked at the claim

Literature Review Johnson and Chamberlain (2011) did a study which states between 72 and 82
percent of homeless people have mental health issues. Of the 173 people studied ranging in age from
12 years old and older receive some form of treatment for mental illness. The implications were that
80 percent of the sample had been homeless for one year or longer and 50 percent had been
homeless for two years or more. Majority of the people in the study has experienced two or more

Mental health is defined as a state of well–being in which every individual realises his or her own
potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able
to make a contribution to her or his community (WHO, 2014).
Mental health disorder can be defined as a health problem that significantly affects how a person
feels, thinks, behaves, and interacts with other people. Mental health problems include the mental ill
health that can be experienced temporarily as a reaction to the stresses of life. Mental disorder cause
a great deal of suffering to those experiencing them, as well as their families and friends (NHS,
2014). Mental health illnesses can affect people of all ages, and it can be triggered by physical,
social, environmental and genetic factors. Everyone is different, and because of this some people are
more at risk of experiencing mental illness than others. Mental disorder are classified into two
different types and degrees of severity, these are, psychosis and neurosis.
Psychosis is a generic term for any mental state where the individual has lost their sense of reality,
allowing normal social functioning to deteriorate. The three primary causes of psychosis are:
Functional e.g. schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, Organic e.g. stemming from medical rather than
psychological conditions, for example, a brain tumour, and psychoactive drugs (Sure life, 2011).

taboo thing to the point where people are afraid to even talk about." This is what twenty–one–year–
old Kaelia Nelson, a pageant queen originally from Hemingford, Nebraska, focused her platform on.
She was recently crowned as Miss Alliance, and would have competed at Miss Nebraska in June of
2018. Unfortunately, Kaelia lost her battle against her mental illness. Kaelia was a junior studying
education and was involved in numerous activities including being a flyer on the Peru State College
cheer team. Mental illness does not have a face. It can affect anyone, even a pageant queen. We have
seen countless of stories like these everywhere. We send our love and our prayers to those families
whose entire lives have been turned around, but we need to acknowledge mental illness in today's
society and stop the stigma. Mental illness is a serious issue that no one is paying attention to. Many
people have been affected, especially young adults, but how many more innocent lives need to be
taken before people start to act. Mental health is important, especially in young adults, and it should
no longer be ignored. To understand the importance of mental health, we must first recognize what it
means. The World Health Organization states that mental health is defined as "a state of well–being

When I say this, you probably think to yourself, "Well, isn't that obvious?"
But yet, when someone tells us they are feeling depressed, most people will say "It's just a phase, get
over it." or "You're feeling sad, just be happy."
They brush it off and ignore it, thinking that this person will be okay.
When in reality, 1 in 4 people in England are dealing with a mental health issue, and only 1 in 8 are
actually getting treatment for their illness.
This means that nearly every household in England, every family, will know somebody dealing with

This could be anyone, from a father dealing with bipolar disorder, a mother with anxiety, or a son or
daughter dealing with an eating disorder.
Just imagine being a single father struggling with depression because his wife had passed away
giving birth to his child.
This father, doesn't want to address his problem with his family because he is afraid that they will
not think that he is strong enough to be able to take care of his child. Afraid somebody will take
away the last hope that he has to be happy.
The father keeps his feelings on the inside, faking confidence to get by and stay strong, always
trying to be the perfect role model for his child.
But in the back of his mind always thinking that he will never be able to be the best father for his

Hungerford et al. (2012, p. 118) illustrates, serves as a filter which one acts, reacts to and interacts

Some types of mental illnesses are thought to be categorized into either the nature (ADHD,
Alzheimer's, schizophrenia), or nurture category (anorexia, alcohol abuse), but without further
developments into the workings of the brain, and also in genetics, it is hard to tell for sure.
Services In Toronto there exist numerous organizations and establishments that have been created

Overview A club that I am part of is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on campus at
Keuka College, which is a national organization made up of local affiliates, state organizations and
volunteers. A goal that NAMI at Keuka College has is to bring awareness to mental illness and to
end the stigma surrounding mental illness. A specific task is to find creative ways to spread
awareness of mental illness on Keuka College. An objective of NAMI is create a stigma free
campus, over the next year. Tasks are delegated between the E–board, who are the officers and
members, depending on what the task is. The officers look to members on what they want to do at
meetings, for fundraising, campus wide event and community service. This led to meeting weekly,
with every other being a fun meeting, where we do something to distress and have fun. The first fun

to children with a severe mental illness, or SMI, throughout the majority of the child's life. The
amount of care provided to adults with SMI by their aging parents is so substantial that if parental
caregivers stopped providing care, public programs could never handle it. The author of this article
wanted to put more focus on assisting the aging caregiver population, increase their emotional well–
being, and lower their stress burden through the use of a social work home–based intervention
program. In the pilot study, families received instruction on problem–solving techniques, education
about the adult child's particular mental illness, and sessions that included cognitive therapy, stress
management, behavioral management, and future planning. This initial study yielded promising
results, including greater life satisfaction and less emotional stress reported by aging parents. The
author concludes the article by discussing the importance of planning for the future and how the
adult child with SMI will be taken care of after the parents' deaths.

Although it is improving, the mental healthcare system in the USA does not serve its citizens well. A

Maybe being in with other inmates could help them cope or get better. The facility could hold
multiple different types of units or "cell blocks" to have different ways to treat inmates. There could
be areas called safe cells, where they place inmates who are seeming to be suicidal. Currently, once
an inmate is deemed suicidal, they must stay in a safe cell for 24 hours and then undergo a
psychological evaluation, to ensure their safety. This new facility could be where inmates from other
areas of the prison go when they are thought to be suicidal, rather than just moving to safe cell
within the same cell block. Also, if it is a separate facility it could be treated more like a hospital.
This way the prison could hire people who are better able to work with and handle people with
problems such as these inmates. People may also be more likely to apply to an institution that is not
connected to the rest of the prison or jail. This new facility would need to be drawn up and have all
the proper necessities put in place, such as loading areas for the transfer of inmates and evacuation
routes. After that the official plan will need the approval from the warden and the city, the two may
come back with some comments or concerns that they would like to see addressed, once those are

Mental Illness is a disease with biological causes. Some mental illnesses have been linked to an
abnormal balance of special chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters help
nerve cells in the brain communicate with each other. If these chemicals are out of balance or are not
working properly, messages may not make it through the brain correctly, leading to symptoms of
mental illness. Other biological factors that may be involved in the development of mental illness
include: genetic, infection, brain defect or injury, prenatal damage, substance abuse, and other

factors.

about this topic some people were uncomfortable, others were more open to discussion, but both of
these people had something in common: they did not actually had an idea of what is a mental illness
or disorder, the people who were clearly uncomfortable answered something similar, their response
was "we should not justify these kind of people's action" referring to mentally ill individuals who
commit crimes, despise the fact I did not asked them about criminals, but about people with mental
illness, they related mentally ill people with criminals, people who were more open, in the other
hand, claimed that "these individuals need help and support" and while is not as dismissive as the
other statement, it's still really problematic since they still place mentally ill people in another group
and refuse to acknowledge the fact that any of us can have a mental illness, they see it as something
it can never happen to them o. One of the reasons why I believe we should raise awareness about it,
it's because the stigma around it, despite the fact very few people believed there was stigma towards
it in my survey (e.g Do you think there is stigma towards seeking mental health treatment?)
