Indoor Air Quality And Environmental Health Essay
Indoor Air Quality and Environmental Health Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers only to the quality of
the ambient air in an interior environment. On average, people spend well over half of their time
inside, and research has shown that indoor air in buildings can be more contaminated than outdoor
air. The majority of people that work in non–industrial buildings such as offices, schools, and
hospitals are exposed daily to poor IAQ. Indoor air pollution (IAP) continually ranks among the top
five environmental risks to public health. Therefore, IAP is a critical factor of the safety and well–
being of the population. This paper explores IAP in context, the health risks related to poor air
quality, the burden of disease from household air pollution, guidelines for environmental infection
control in healthcare facilities, and how to improve IAP. Indoor Environmental Quality Indoor
environmental quality (IEQ), comprises the quality of a building's environment concerning the
wellbeing and health of those who occupy the space. Many factors contribute to the IEQ such as air
quality, lighting, and damp conditions. People usually experience symptoms or health conditions
from exposures to contaminants while they are indoor. One of the reasons why IEQ is a primary
concern is because some people that experience symptoms while indoors usually get better when
they are not in the building. Indoor environments are incredibly complex, and building occupants
may be exposed to a variety of

Roofing Repair In San Rafael Research Paper
After a bad storm, you should always check your home for leaks. The wind and hail from storms
can damage the shingles and cause leaks that lead to more serious issues. Leaks may not always be
visible at first, but over time, they become more and more expensive to fix. That is why it is better if
you can catch them early.
What Types of Repairs Occur from Roof Damage?
The greatest problem you will find from roof damage is mold invasion. After the moisture gets
inside your home, mold can start to form, which will cause damage to everything in your home, and
it becomes a serious threat to your health. Allied Restoration Company, also known as ARC,
believes that you have to fix the cause of the issue before you can eliminate the mold for good. ...

you, and you could be forced to pay worker's compensation. ARC technicians have been fully

Air Pollution : The Main Sources Of Outdoor Air Pollution
Indoor Air Quality
Air Pollution occurs when a substance that has harmful or poisonous effects contaminates the air. It
is a serious danger to the environment, but also a major public health issue. According to the World
Health Organization (WHO), 7 million people died as a result of Air Pollution exposure in 2012,
namely 1 in 8 deaths worldwide. Cardiovascular diseases are the main causes of these deaths.
Many people when they think of Air Pollution, cities, car emissions, chemicals from factories, smog
come across their mind. They think of Outdoor Air Pollution. However, what about the air within or
around our homes?
WHO estimates that Indoor Air Pollution accounted for 4.3 million deaths compared to 3.7 million
deaths for Outdoor Air Pollution. Furthermore, as indicated by the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), many organic pollutants indoors are 2 to 5 times more concentrate than outdoors
regardless of the geographic location, whether in rural or highly industrial areas. These
concentrations can possibly reach 1000 times higher after certain activities such as paint stripping.
In addition to the higher concentration, a person spends about 90% of their time indoors; therefore,
Indoor Air Pollution is just as important as Outdoor Air Pollution.
Sources of Indoor Air Pollution, Health Effects, and Solutions
Indoor Air Pollution comes from many sources. Besides the Outdoor Air Pollution making its way
indoors, home furnishings, building materials, cleaning products and other lifestyle habits are
sources of pollution. Depending on the type of pollutants, their concentrations, the length of
exposure, and the person being exposed, the health effects may be experienced in a short or a long
term, and can be minor like headaches, eye, nose, and throat irritation, or severe like lung disease,
heart disease, or cancer. Hopefully, as mentioned by the WHO, intervening on the source of
pollution, the living environment, and the user behavior can cut Indoor Air Pollution.
Some common indoor air pollutants are:
–Asbestos is a microscopic fiber. It is found in heat–resistant fabrics, packaging, or building
materials, especially in homes built before 1980. When inhaled, asbestos can cause cancer or other

Air Purifiers Advantages
Air Purifiers and Their Benefits.
–––––
You may wonder, "How do I choose the right air purifier?" Each air purifier has its own
performance and technical characteristics. Air purifiers are extremely useful for people with
respiratory diseases such as asthma or allergies and also for people who want to fight against
pollution or bad odors.
I invite you to consult the many opinions on air purifiers. There are now high–performance air
purifiers perfectly suited for size, performance and budget for homes and small spaces. Air purifier
efficiency depends on certain criteria.
Obviously, the level of effectiveness of the purifier and its speed of treatment depend on the state of
pollution of the air and its dimensions. This is to be taken into account in the choice of the device
and its use. Air purifiers will help you breath clean air, year–round.
Initially, air purifiers were found only in industries to filter and remove toxic residues. If the quality
of the air is not excellent, the body must fight to eliminate this pollution and the most fragile people
often develop respiratory diseases (allergies, asthma, cancers, etc.) whose source is certainly partly
due to this pollution (although other factors may come into play).
According to the WHO, formaldehyde (the best known reason for indoor pollution) is present in all
homes of the world at levels of concentration harmful to health. The WHO also indicates that
naphthalene, benzene, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, trichlorethylene, radon,
tetrachlorethylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are present in many homes. Pollution that
is biological in nature is caused by bacteria, molds, viruses, pollen, etc.
Pollution that is biological in nature is frequently made worse because of humidity, heat, poor
housekeeping and hot water and air conditioning installations. These issues promote the
proliferation of biological agents, which increases the risk of diffusion in the environment. This is
frequently the case for indoor pollution because it is particularly difficult to prevent.
Purifiers promise to filter most of these indoor pollutants. Providers of air purifiers believe that their
mission is to provide relief, because air pollution affects

Encapsulation Research Paper
Here's How Encapsulation Works To Dry Out Your Crawl Space
If you have an older home with a crawl space, you may be dealing with humidity and moisture
problems even if there isn't standing water under your home. That's because older homes were built
with vents in the crawl space. That's no longer the practice since the vents tend to increase humidity.
This leads to mildew and musty odors that spill over into your home. This problem can be remedied
with encapsulation. Here's how it's done.
Dry Out The Crawl Space
The first step is to dry out the space and repair water damage. If there is mold present, it is removed
too. If there is a problem with water leaking into the crawl space, then a drain or sump pump should
be installed to correct the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The insulation helps control the climate in the crawl space by keeping out cold or hot and humid
outdoor air. Your contractor may choose spray foam insulation or insulation boards, but foam might
be best since it can fill in all the gaps in the crawl space to plug air leaks.
Treat The Air
When the crawl space is encapsulated, it becomes like another room in your home. It is fully
insulated from the outside, so you need to treat the air. You might want to divert some air from your
HVAC by installing ducts to supply the crawl space. Another option is to place a dehumidifier in the
space that cycles on when needed and turns off when the humidity is low.
Encapsulating your crawl space is an effective way to keep the area dry. That eliminates the musty
odor and the problems that come along with dampness such as an increase in bugs and wood rot.
You might also notice the floors in your home are warmer in the winter and you might save money
on your power bill since cold air won't leak up into your house. It may be easier to keep your home
cool in the summer too since there won't be a constant leak of hot and humid air from the crawl
space

Descriptive Essay On Dells
Wisconsin Dells. If you are a Midwesterner, their water hose spraying commercial that plays on
constant repeat popped into your mind. The catchphrase, the Waterpark Capital of the World, is the
normal conception of a summer vacation in the Dells. Water parks, ski shows, shopping, and food
complete a clear picture. But when you step out of the normal routine of going to waterpark after
waterpark and shop after shop, you get to experience the magical wonders the environment can
present to us. Almost every year my family stands in line at our local mall to receive coupon books,
given out by the radio stations, to do certain things in the Dells for free or for a discounted rate. This
past summer, we received a different experience than our normal while visiting this place. It was
blistering hot out in the mid–June weather. Not a single cloud in the sky. No windy breeze. Rain
wouldn't come for days. The congested waterparks were dangerous just to walk through their gates.
Our only semi–enjoyable option would be to go on a boat tour on the river. Standing on the main
street, waiting in line around a single green and white booth to get our tickets for the upcoming tour
seemed to take forever in the heat. But the wait would be worth it. This was our chance to have a
unique out–of–the–box summer experience. I knew we would have the chance to explore magical
sites off the beaten path of our busy everyday lives. When you take a Dells Boat Tour, you are
taking a trip back in time as the guides tell tales of the Upper Dells. 14,000 years ago a large ice lake
gave away, allowing the glacial waters of Wisconsin to flood through the area, cutting out gorges
and leaving behind cliffs. These gorges formed the Narrows, treacherous areas where the Wisconsin
River narrowed to only 52 feet and the water was so shallow it formed deadly rapids and swirling
whirlpools where a man could drown if he got pulled under. In the mid–1800s, lumberjacks floated
logs on rafts down the river every spring on to sawmills north of the Dells. Several men lost their
lives along the way. By the end of the 19th century, the railroad replaced rafts for transporting logs
to these sawmills. When the first permanent dam, built in 1909, it raised the

Hidden Mold
A Few Things To Know About Getting Rid Of Mold In Your Attic
When you see a big stain on your ceiling that indicates your roof is leaking, there's a good chance
mold is growing near the wet area. Mold spores are very common, and they are normally present in
your home. However, when there is excess moisture from a roof leak, and a food source such as
wood or drywall, mold will flourish. Mold is a danger to your home. It can affect the value of your
home, destroy the insulation in your attic, ruin wood and drywall, and give your home a musty
smell. It can even irritate your respiratory system. You want to have mold removed as soon as you
can. Here are some things to know about mold remediation.

It may be inside the drywall of your ceiling. It may even be growing on the rafters and wood beams.
If the leak has been going on for a long time and the weather is warm and humid too, you may have
dangerous levels of mold in your attic, especially if ventilation is poor. That's another reason to
leave the inspection to a professional. Once the degree of damage is uncovered, the contractor can
advise on the best way to fix your mold problem.
Prevent Spreading The Spores
When mold–covered materials are disturbed, mold spores are released into the air. That's why it is
dangerous to rip out moldy insulation and drywall yourself. A contractor uses a negative ventilation
system that draws spores out of your house. He or she may even wet the materials first to make the
spores less likely to become airborne. If care isn't taken to prevent the spread of mold spores, mold
may start growing in other areas, such as your HVAC system. Mold spores in the air can also irritate
your lungs if you're sensitive to them.
You'll also need to turn off your fans and air conditioning system while the contractor works
because this helps reduce the spread of spores. Even so, some spores will be released, and that's why
it is important for the contractor to wear protecting clothing and a breathing apparatus while
removing mold from your

wine. Mold is necessary for the break down and decomposition for all of natures organic matter,
which helps recycle nutrients as well as gets rid of the build up of decaying matter and allows new
vegetation to grow. Mold does a lot of good for our planet but unfortunately, it can also cause a lot
of harm, especially if it begins to grow and spread undetected in your home.

Dry wet areas immediately. Mold can't grow without moisture, so tackle wet areas right away.
Seepage into the basement after a heavy rainfall, accumulation from a leaky pipe, even a spill on the
carpet should be dried within 24 to 48 hours. If you've experienced a flood, remove water–damaged
carpets, bedding, and furniture if they can't be completely dried. Even everyday occurrences need
attention: don't leave wet items lying around the house, and make sure to dry the floor and walls
after a shower. Don't leave wet clothes in the washing machine, where mold can spread quickly.
Hang them to dry – preferably outside or in areas with good air circulation.
3. Prevent moisture with proper ventilation. It may be that your routine activities are encouraging
the growth of mold in your home. Make sure an activity as simple as cooking dinner, taking a
shower, or doing a load of laundry doesn't invite mold by providing proper ventilation in your

Questions On Fice Staff
Task 3: (a) Discuss how and why the office staff might feel uncomfortable if the actual values were
outside the range of acceptable values identified in Task 1. The staff may feel uncomfortable with
the heat if it is outside the recommended values which are 21–23°C (69–73°F).The reason for this is
that if they are too warm when working in an office they may feel that they are beginning to sweat
more which can make it difficult for them to concentrate when carrying out their work because they
are more concerned in trying to cool themselves down to a comfortable temperature. The office
building can be cooled down by opening windows and doors. A reason they may feel to warm is that
they may be wearing extra or perhaps thicker clothing which can lead to an increase in their body
temperature as less heat can escape from their bodies. If this is the case they can take off the thick
clothing to help cool themselves down. Computers generating heat can also increase the temperature
of the office. The staff may also feel too cold in the workplace. If this is the case they may feel very
uncomfortable when working and they could also find it hard to concentrate. The reason the office
may be so cold is that a window may be open which allows the cold air from outside to pass through
the office creating a cold atmosphere within the office. The need for good insulation of rooms is
very important in an office because it will mean less heat can escape from the room and on cold
winter days

Desicions Without Grandpa
As another Team Meeting broke up, Steven plodded back to his desk where his projections for the
quarter ahead were waiting to be completed. He gazed out the hermetically sealed windows which
overlooked the sprawling city, his eyes searching for green spaces.
He sighed. He had thought transferring to the City from the village would be more exciting and
challenging but it had not lived up to his expectations and he was frustrated at the endless meetings
and emphasis on figures and targets. He was also missing his friends and family as he tried to settle
into a new life. City people rushed everywhere and appeared busy and always having somewhere to

He could never imagine walking along any street in his home village and not speaking to a single
person. Older folks knew him either as John and Nettie's son or Peter's grandson. Others knew him
from school or shared activities. Almost everyone who passed by his Grandpa's workshop, popped
their head in the ever– open door to call out a greeting.
He pictured his Grandpa's workshop in the ivy–clad stone building attached to the family home. He

The Effect Of Exercise On Cardiovascular Function
Introduction:
Tokui and Hirakoba (2007) define exercise efficiency as the given rate of power output in relation to
the amount of energy expended in a given time (as cited in Gaesser and Brooks, 1975). Efficiency
during exercise varies due to several biomechanical and physiological factors–namely, contraction
velocity and the force produced by muscles (Tokui and Hirakoba). Research shows that exercise
efficiency ranges differ among the various types of exercise modalities commonly used in clinical
and recreational settings (McArdle, F. Katch, and V. Katch, 2010). Measuring exercise efficiency
allows researchers to examine which modalities of exercise are most efficient, enabling athletes and
individuals in rehabilitation to choose the proper mode of training to fit their needs. During
rehabilitation or training, improving cardiovascular function is a essential measure of outcome; thus,
doctors, physical therapists and coaches are left to decide which mode of exercise will better yield
results based on an individual's abilities and disabilities (Barfield, Sherman and Michael, 2003).
Different exercise modes may elicit varying physiological responses; therefor professionals aiming
to augment their patient or athlete's rehabilitation and training regimens should consider the latter
(Barfield, Sherman and Michael, 2003). Different exercise modes target variable body segments,
some being full–body and others targeting only the lower or upper body. Due to differing numbers

we did that), it's time to get all hands on the boat. We bring the boat down to the dock master, the
official who approves the boat's eligibility to race, and find out that we aren't allowed on the dock.
No, we didn't have an illegal engine hidden under the boat to propel us to the finish line (although
that would be pretty cool), but the regatta was running behind schedule. It became clear that we
would have to wait even longer. As we waited for the time to come for us to put our boat in the
water, it was easy to get annoyed with the officials. Especially after putting the boat in the water and
being asked to bring it back off of the dock to wait yet again. Nonetheless, we had to move past the
fact that we had been waiting for hours. We had to get our game faces on. When it was time to
actually shove off the dock, nobody was truly "in the zone". The row up the Mississippi River to the
start line, which was against the current and the wind, also didn't help. Plus, once we were at the
start line, we had to wait a few more minutes for the other boats to get there also. I have never
wanted to just race as much

resolve when the employee leaves the building. The cause of sick building syndrome cannot be
narrowed to just one, they are generally the result of a combination of factors as well as
physiological and health status of individual persons. Some of the contaminants that are commonly
found in indoor environments are formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile
organic compounds. In the scenario presented. School administrators have stated that the institution
housing the teachers suffering from the ailments is poorly designed and constructed, not adequately
ventilated or routinely cleaned and maintained. It shows the effects of numerous water intrusion

Soccer Descriptive Essay
Wrist Wrist Wrist One lovely afternoon I was at my indoor soccer game. I was in an indoor league
with some of my friends and we were tearing every team we played. That day we were going to play
against an academy team, which have very good players.I had arrived about two minutes before the
game. I was pretty late because I had gone to go eat before with my brother. So because of that I
didn't start and I wasn't warmed up either. Nathan, my coach was like "Hey man did you go sew

Damp Proofing Inside A Home Prevents Moisture From Seeping Inside
Tar is a great way to help keep your basement dry, but it will not completely eliminate moisture in a

It is important to repair cracks immediately instead of letting them get worse. Unfortunately, you
need to fix the parts of the crack that you can and cannot see if you want to fix it properly.
Otherwise, a patch over a visible crack is only a costly temporary fix.
You'll need a contractor to do exterior crack repair to ensure the problem is fixed properly. It's a
more involved repair process, since they will need to dig around your home to get access to the
basement's exterior walls. They will apply polymer material to the outside of the walls, which will
become a protective barrier against water and moisture, preventing it from getting inside.
Waterproofing Material Installed Under your Floor Prevents Dampness
Cracks can be very troubling in a basement, which is why some homeowners decide to have a
waterproof underlay installed underneath the surface of the basement floor. It works great for places
like a bathroom, since moisture is present and not very prevalent, but not so great for a basement
floor. The waterproof underlay isn't fool proof. While it can help prevent humidity from building up,
keeping your floor dry, it shouldn't be the only

Thesis topic: Indoor air quality (IAQ) in residential and commercials units and its adverse effects on
human health.
Sundell.J. (2004).On the History of Indoor Air Quality and Health. Indoor Air 7(14), 51–58.
Indoor air is a critical factor to human health. More than half of the air inhaled is at the homes.
Indoor air quality plays a huge role in one's health. Poor ventilation is one of the main causes of
deaths in developing countries. In developed countries, IAQ (Indoor Air quality) is a main cause of
allergies, other hypersensitivity reactions, air way infections and cancer.
The relation between IAQ and health is not given high importance. Studies shows that ventilation
rates below 25 l/s per person increases short term sick leave and reduces productivity. More efforts
are being put into building physics, HVAC engineering and architecture for better IAQ standards.
Dampness, Ventilation, Building materials and indoor air chemistry are one of the primary factors
affecting Indoor air quality and health, but lacks scientific data and needs to be researched more on.

Shingles On The Roof Research Paper
The Consequences of Ignoring a Hail Damaged Roof
Hail, one of Mother Nature's wonders, is a serious threat to your home. These "ice balls" can do
significant damage to your home during a hailstorm, including damaging your roof. However, hail
damage can get worse if you delay roofing repairs.
Hail Can Damage Shingles
The shingles on your roof form an elaborate system that protects you from moisture. Installed at an
angle and sealed to repel moisture, your shingles are one of many barriers safeguarding your home.
However, when hail strikes your roof, these dense, high–velocity balls of ice can displace your
shingles. Once a shingle is displaced, the seal is broken, and water could get into you home. If you
ignore this repair, the leaking roof could cause mold to grow in your home, creating more problems.

If a shingle is no longer on your roof, then it can't prevent your warm air from escaping from the
roof of your home. As the warm air leaves, you'll find cool air will quickly replace it and make your
home feel drafty. Due to this, you'll have to heat your home to maintain a comfortable temperature.
What to Do If You Suspect Your Roof Is Damaged by Hail
When it comes to hail damage, obviously, ignoring it isn't an option. The sooner you take action, the
less damage you'll have to contend with once you finally get it fixed. We recommend the following
steps to ensure your roof is in good shape.
Step 1. Call a professional roofing contractor like our team at P & D Mechanical.
Step 2. Allow us to examine your roof for potential problems.
Step 3. Call your home insurance company and file a claim.
Step 4. Allow our team to begin working on your roof.
We will work with your home insurance company to ensure that all necessary repairs are fixed.

Pros And Cons Of Crawl Space Vents
Crawl Space Vents in Massachusetts and Rhode Island To get an energy–efficient home, your attic,
crawl space and crawl space vents need to be properly installed and insulated. Otherwise, you could
be facing high heating and cooling bills alongside moisture damage. Luckily, the crawl space vents
we install can be controlled by the temperature outside. They'll open and close automatically,
depending on the weather. This is a convenient feature, because you no longer have to worry about
opening or closing your vents. During construction, the crawl space doors and vents are often
overlooked and these can become a weak point in your home. Pests can enter, and humidity isn't
controlled– this is the easiest way for moisture damage to happen. Excess

Should Mold Sampling Be Performed At All Essay
Should mold sampling be performed at all?
Credible organizations in the indoor air quality community, such as the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and American Industrial Hygiene
Association (AIHA), advocate against routine mold sampling. Looking for evidence of water
damage and visible mold growth is the first priority. If visible mold is present, sampling is usually
unnecessary and the mold should be appropriately remediated. The species of mold or whether
sampling has been done do not affect the need for or the manner of remediation. In addition, there
are no standards for acceptable levels of mold in the indoor environment; so there is no standard to
which to compare any mold sampling results. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there are perhaps a few specific situations when mold sampling might be useful and
performed. Sampling for mold is expensive, and you should have a clear reason for doing so. In
situations where visible mold is present and there is a specific need to have the mold identified,
surface or bulk sampling might be warranted. In certain instances, such as cases where health
concerns are an issue, litigation is involved, or the source(s) of contamination is unclear, sampling
may be considered as part of a building evaluation. Also, if mold is suspected but not visibly
detected after a thorough inspection, then microbial air sampling, conducted in accordance with
guidance documents, might reveal evidence of mold amplification indoors or hidden reservoirs
behind walls and other building structures. Additionally, if mold is being removed and there is a
question about how far the colonization extends, then surface or bulk sampling, in combination with
moisture readings, might be applicable. Surface sampling might also be useful to determine if an
area has been adequately cleaned or remediated. If samples are collected, regardless of the purpose,
the results should help answer a clear question. Sampling without a specific purpose and a well
thought out sampling plan greatly increases the chances of generating useless

Influenza Virus Essay
Industrialization and urbanization make people live and work in indoors, and some studies found
that people in industrialized countries spend around 90% of their lifetime in the inside of the
building [1, 2]. Therefore, it is important to recognize that, indoor air quality is an important
determinant of public health [3]. In indoor air, the microbial fraction of aerosols present is of
fundamental environmental and public health importance. This fraction is commonly termed
"bioaerosols" and is a mixture of viable and nonviable microorganisms. The definition of bioaerosol
includes airborne fungi, bacteria and viruses. Influenza viruses are one of bioaerosol in indoor
environment and are among the most common causes of human respiratory infections. Influenza
viruses are among the most significant because they cause high morbidity and mortality [4].
Influenza viruses are spreaded with different ways such as; direct contact, indirect contact, large
respiratory droplets and aerosols that are left behind by the evaporation of larger droplets [5]. Also,

Management Of Indoors Air Quality
Management of Indoors Air Quality in schools:
Schools' children do spend in their classrooms almost double the time they do in their rooms at
homes (WHO, 2007). This gives the extra importance of having good indoor air quality at schools
which helps to pertain an improved learning environment, increased productivity and better health
for students and school staff. Having poor indoor air qualities would have severe consequences on
health, behaviors, perception, development and learning disabilities (WHO, 2007).
In the context of creating an an optimal learning environment for children, a set of approaches and
strategies would be applicable to be adopted by schools depending on the type of the snag. Studies
throughout the developed countries – performed by WHO – about indoor air quality at schools
resulted that air problems in schools could be obviated by providing adequate and continuous
ventilation, controlling humidity and using efficacious outdoor air removal filters (WHO, 2007).
All schools should have strategies that address air pollution based on the several aspects of air
pollution sources. These strategies include; cautious use of hazardous substances and their proper
disposal, effective periodic inspection of leaks and cracks in building foundations and plumbing
systems, periodic inspection and maintenance of ventilation, heating, and air conditioning systems
with compliance to international guidelines, periodic inspections for pests assuring informing school

Mold And Mildew
Mold and Mildew Aren't Immune in the Winter
Mold growth and mildew are intensified during the winter months, especially in Virginia. As the
weather gets cooler and wetter, homeowners tend to lock down their homes to keep warm air inside;
and if a home has energy efficient treatments, it becomes tightly sealed and insulated. Well–
insulated homes are great because they prevent cold air from entering and heat from escaping, but
they can also trap moisture and increase humidity levels. Without a circulation of fresh air, airborne
spores can increase the likelihood of mold and mildew stains in your home. As mold grows, it
compromises the strength and integrity of your structure.

Indoor Air Quality And Environmental Health Essay

  • 1. Indoor Air Quality And Environmental Health Essay Indoor Air Quality and Environmental Health Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers only to the quality of the ambient air in an interior environment. On average, people spend well over half of their time inside, and research has shown that indoor air in buildings can be more contaminated than outdoor air. The majority of people that work in non–industrial buildings such as offices, schools, and hospitals are exposed daily to poor IAQ. Indoor air pollution (IAP) continually ranks among the top five environmental risks to public health. Therefore, IAP is a critical factor of the safety and well– being of the population. This paper explores IAP in context, the health risks related to poor air quality, the burden of disease from household air pollution, guidelines for environmental infection control in healthcare facilities, and how to improve IAP. Indoor Environmental Quality Indoor environmental quality (IEQ), comprises the quality of a building's environment concerning the wellbeing and health of those who occupy the space. Many factors contribute to the IEQ such as air quality, lighting, and damp conditions. People usually experience symptoms or health conditions from exposures to contaminants while they are indoor. One of the reasons why IEQ is a primary concern is because some people that experience symptoms while indoors usually get better when they are not in the building. Indoor environments are incredibly complex, and building occupants may be exposed to a variety of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Roofing Repair In San Rafael Research Paper After a bad storm, you should always check your home for leaks. The wind and hail from storms can damage the shingles and cause leaks that lead to more serious issues. Leaks may not always be visible at first, but over time, they become more and more expensive to fix. That is why it is better if you can catch them early. What Types of Repairs Occur from Roof Damage? The greatest problem you will find from roof damage is mold invasion. After the moisture gets inside your home, mold can start to form, which will cause damage to everything in your home, and it becomes a serious threat to your health. Allied Restoration Company, also known as ARC, believes that you have to fix the cause of the issue before you can eliminate the mold for good. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only is it important that you choose the right product, you have to choose the right contractor. In the past, we have worked with customers who were blatantly ripped off. The roofing contractor not only did the job incorrectly, they caused further damage that we had to come back and fix for the customer. Who you choose when picking a roofing company is important. Never hire someone who has not been fully insured because if they are injured on the job, the burden of liability will fall on you, and you could be forced to pay worker's compensation. • 3. Air Pollution : The Main Sources Of Outdoor Air Pollution Indoor Air Quality Air Pollution occurs when a substance that has harmful or poisonous effects contaminates the air. It is a serious danger to the environment, but also a major public health issue. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 7 million people died as a result of Air Pollution exposure in 2012, namely 1 in 8 deaths worldwide. Cardiovascular diseases are the main causes of these deaths. Many people when they think of Air Pollution, cities, car emissions, chemicals from factories, smog come across their mind. They think of Outdoor Air Pollution. However, what about the air within or around our homes? WHO estimates that Indoor Air Pollution accounted for 4.3 million deaths compared to 3.7 million deaths for Outdoor Air Pollution. Furthermore, as indicated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), many organic pollutants indoors are 2 to 5 times more concentrate than outdoors regardless of the geographic location, whether in rural or highly industrial areas. These concentrations can possibly reach 1000 times higher after certain activities such as paint stripping. In addition to the higher concentration, a person spends about 90% of their time indoors; therefore, Indoor Air Pollution is just as important as Outdoor Air Pollution. Sources of Indoor Air Pollution, Health Effects, and Solutions Indoor Air Pollution comes from many sources. Besides the Outdoor Air Pollution making its way indoors, home furnishings, building materials, cleaning products and other lifestyle habits are sources of pollution. Depending on the type of pollutants, their concentrations, the length of exposure, and the person being exposed, the health effects may be experienced in a short or a long term, and can be minor like headaches, eye, nose, and throat irritation, or severe like lung disease, heart disease, or cancer. Hopefully, as mentioned by the WHO, intervening on the source of pollution, the living environment, and the user behavior can cut Indoor Air Pollution. Some common indoor air pollutants are: –Asbestos is a microscopic fiber. It is found in heat–resistant fabrics, packaging, or building materials, especially in homes built before 1980. When inhaled, asbestos can cause cancer or other respiratory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Air Purifiers Advantages Air Purifiers and Their Benefits. ––––– You may wonder, "How do I choose the right air purifier?" Each air purifier has its own performance and technical characteristics. Air purifiers are extremely useful for people with respiratory diseases such as asthma or allergies and also for people who want to fight against pollution or bad odors. I invite you to consult the many opinions on air purifiers. There are now high–performance air purifiers perfectly suited for size, performance and budget for homes and small spaces. Air purifier efficiency depends on certain criteria. Obviously, the level of effectiveness of the purifier and its speed of treatment depend on the state of pollution of the air and its dimensions. This is to be taken into account in the choice of the device and its use. Air purifiers will help you breath clean air, year–round. Initially, air purifiers were found only in industries to filter and remove toxic residues. If the quality of the air is not excellent, the body must fight to eliminate this pollution and the most fragile people often develop respiratory diseases (allergies, asthma, cancers, etc.) whose source is certainly partly due to this pollution (although other factors may come into play). According to the WHO, formaldehyde (the best known reason for indoor pollution) is present in all homes of the world at levels of concentration harmful to health. The WHO also indicates that naphthalene, benzene, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, trichlorethylene, radon, tetrachlorethylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are present in many homes. Pollution that is biological in nature is caused by bacteria, molds, viruses, pollen, etc. Pollution that is biological in nature is frequently made worse because of humidity, heat, poor housekeeping and hot water and air conditioning installations. These issues promote the proliferation of biological agents, which increases the risk of diffusion in the environment. This is frequently the case for indoor pollution because it is particularly difficult to prevent. Purifiers promise to filter most of these indoor pollutants. Providers of air purifiers believe that their mission is to provide relief, because air pollution affects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Encapsulation Research Paper Here's How Encapsulation Works To Dry Out Your Crawl Space If you have an older home with a crawl space, you may be dealing with humidity and moisture problems even if there isn't standing water under your home. That's because older homes were built with vents in the crawl space. That's no longer the practice since the vents tend to increase humidity. This leads to mildew and musty odors that spill over into your home. This problem can be remedied with encapsulation. Here's how it's done. Dry Out The Crawl Space The first step is to dry out the space and repair water damage. If there is mold present, it is removed too. If there is a problem with water leaking into the crawl space, then a drain or sump pump should be installed to correct the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The insulation helps control the climate in the crawl space by keeping out cold or hot and humid outdoor air. Your contractor may choose spray foam insulation or insulation boards, but foam might be best since it can fill in all the gaps in the crawl space to plug air leaks. Treat The Air When the crawl space is encapsulated, it becomes like another room in your home. It is fully insulated from the outside, so you need to treat the air. You might want to divert some air from your HVAC by installing ducts to supply the crawl space. Another option is to place a dehumidifier in the space that cycles on when needed and turns off when the humidity is low. Encapsulating your crawl space is an effective way to keep the area dry. That eliminates the musty odor and the problems that come along with dampness such as an increase in bugs and wood rot. You might also notice the floors in your home are warmer in the winter and you might save money on your power bill since cold air won't leak up into your house. It may be easier to keep your home cool in the summer too since there won't be a constant leak of hot and humid air from the crawl space ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Descriptive Essay On Dells Wisconsin Dells. If you are a Midwesterner, their water hose spraying commercial that plays on constant repeat popped into your mind. The catchphrase, the Waterpark Capital of the World, is the normal conception of a summer vacation in the Dells. Water parks, ski shows, shopping, and food complete a clear picture. But when you step out of the normal routine of going to waterpark after waterpark and shop after shop, you get to experience the magical wonders the environment can present to us. Almost every year my family stands in line at our local mall to receive coupon books, given out by the radio stations, to do certain things in the Dells for free or for a discounted rate. This past summer, we received a different experience than our normal while visiting this place. It was blistering hot out in the mid–June weather. Not a single cloud in the sky. No windy breeze. Rain wouldn't come for days. The congested waterparks were dangerous just to walk through their gates. Our only semi–enjoyable option would be to go on a boat tour on the river. Standing on the main street, waiting in line around a single green and white booth to get our tickets for the upcoming tour seemed to take forever in the heat. But the wait would be worth it. This was our chance to have a unique out–of–the–box summer experience. I knew we would have the chance to explore magical sites off the beaten path of our busy everyday lives. When you take a Dells Boat Tour, you are taking a trip back in time as the guides tell tales of the Upper Dells. 14,000 years ago a large ice lake gave away, allowing the glacial waters of Wisconsin to flood through the area, cutting out gorges and leaving behind cliffs. These gorges formed the Narrows, treacherous areas where the Wisconsin River narrowed to only 52 feet and the water was so shallow it formed deadly rapids and swirling whirlpools where a man could drown if he got pulled under. In the mid–1800s, lumberjacks floated logs on rafts down the river every spring on to sawmills north of the Dells. Several men lost their lives along the way. By the end of the 19th century, the railroad replaced rafts for transporting logs to these sawmills. When the first permanent dam, built in 1909, it raised the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The thing you need to look out for when it comes to duct cleaning is companies that make exaggerated claims about the benefits or try to set up regular scheduling for duct cleaning services. So should you have your air ducts cleaned or not? Should I Clean My Air Ducts? It never hurts to have your air ducts cleaned as dust, dirt and allergens can build up in your ducts. • 11. Hidden Mold A Few Things To Know About Getting Rid Of Mold In Your Attic When you see a big stain on your ceiling that indicates your roof is leaking, there's a good chance mold is growing near the wet area. Mold spores are very common, and they are normally present in your home. However, when there is excess moisture from a roof leak, and a food source such as wood or drywall, mold will flourish. Mold is a danger to your home. It can affect the value of your home, destroy the insulation in your attic, ruin wood and drywall, and give your home a musty smell. If the leak has been going on for a long time and the weather is warm and humid too, you may have dangerous levels of mold in your attic, especially if ventilation is poor. That's another reason to leave the inspection to a professional. Once the degree of damage is uncovered, the contractor can advise on the best way to fix your mold problem. Prevent Spreading The Spores When mold–covered materials are disturbed, mold spores are released into the air. That's why it is dangerous to rip out moldy insulation and drywall yourself. A contractor uses a negative ventilation system that draws spores out of your house. He or she may even wet the materials first to make the spores less likely to become airborne. If care isn't taken to prevent the spread of mold spores, mold may start growing in other areas, such as your HVAC system. Mold spores in the air can also irritate your lungs if you're sensitive to them. You'll also need to turn off your fans and air conditioning system while the contractor works because this helps reduce the spread of spores. Even so, some spores will be released, and that's why it is important for the contractor to wear protecting clothing and a breathing apparatus while removing mold from your ... • 14. Questions On Fice Staff Task 3: (a) Discuss how and why the office staff might feel uncomfortable if the actual values were outside the range of acceptable values identified in Task 1. The staff may feel uncomfortable with the heat if it is outside the recommended values which are 21–23°C (69–73°F).The reason for this is that if they are too warm when working in an office they may feel that they are beginning to sweat more which can make it difficult for them to concentrate when carrying out their work because they are more concerned in trying to cool themselves down to a comfortable temperature. The office building can be cooled down by opening windows and doors. A reason they may feel to warm is that they may be wearing extra or perhaps thicker clothing which can lead to an increase in their body temperature as less heat can escape from their bodies. If this is the case they can take off the thick clothing to help cool themselves down. Computers generating heat can also increase the temperature of the office. The staff may also feel too cold in the workplace. If this is the case they may feel very uncomfortable when working and they could also find it hard to concentrate. The reason the office may be so cold is that a window may be open which allows the cold air from outside to pass through the office creating a cold atmosphere within the office. The need for good insulation of rooms is very important in an office because it will mean less heat can escape from the room and on cold winter days ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Effect Of Exercise On Cardiovascular Function Introduction: Tokui and Hirakoba (2007) define exercise efficiency as the given rate of power output in relation to the amount of energy expended in a given time (as cited in Gaesser and Brooks, 1975). Efficiency during exercise varies due to several biomechanical and physiological factors–namely, contraction velocity and the force produced by muscles (Tokui and Hirakoba). Research shows that exercise efficiency ranges differ among the various types of exercise modalities commonly used in clinical and recreational settings (McArdle, F. Katch, and V. Katch, 2010). Measuring exercise efficiency allows researchers to examine which modalities of exercise are most efficient, enabling athletes and individuals in rehabilitation to choose the proper mode of training to fit their needs. During rehabilitation or training, improving cardiovascular function is a essential measure of outcome; thus, doctors, physical therapists and coaches are left to decide which mode of exercise will better yield results based on an individual's abilities and disabilities (Barfield, Sherman and Michael, 2003). Different exercise modes may elicit varying physiological responses; therefor professionals aiming to augment their patient or athlete's rehabilitation and training regimens should consider the latter (Barfield, Sherman and Michael, 2003). Different exercise modes target variable body segments, some being full–body and others targeting only the lower or upper body. Due to differing numbers of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After a couple of minutes of pre–race pump–up in a circle (seriously, we did that), it's time to get all hands on the boat. We bring the boat down to the dock master, the official who approves the boat's eligibility to race, and find out that we aren't allowed on the dock. No, we didn't have an illegal engine hidden under the boat to propel us to the finish line (although that would be pretty cool), but the regatta was running behind schedule. It became clear that we would have to wait even longer. As we waited for the time to come for us to put our boat in the water, it was easy to get annoyed with the officials. Especially after putting the boat in the water and being asked to bring it back off of the dock to wait yet again. Nonetheless, we had to move past the fact that we had been waiting for hours. The row up the Mississippi River to the start line, which was against the current and the wind, also didn't help. Credible organizations in the indoor air quality community, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), advocate against routine mold sampling. Looking for evidence of water damage and visible mold growth is the first priority. If visible mold is present, sampling is usually unnecessary and the mold should be appropriately remediated. Sampling for mold is expensive, and you should have a clear reason for doing so. In situations where visible mold is present and there is a specific need to have the mold identified, surface or bulk sampling might be warranted. In certain instances, such as cases where health concerns are an issue, litigation is involved, or the source(s) of contamination is unclear, sampling may be considered as part of a building evaluation. Also, if mold is suspected but not visibly detected after a thorough inspection, then microbial air sampling, conducted in accordance with guidance documents, might reveal evidence of mold amplification indoors or hidden reservoirs behind walls and other building structures. Additionally, if mold is being removed and there is a question about how far the colonization extends, then surface or bulk sampling, in combination with moisture readings, might be applicable.
