I gave this talk at IA Summit in Baltimore in April 2013. At the start of a project, not only do we not know the answers yet, we don’t even truly know which questions to ask. And yet straight away we’re asked to provide project plans and timelines, to list and describe our deliverables, and to outline the exact steps we intend to take. So, to avoid the discomfort of not having immediate answers, we map out a methodology for ourselves and apply it to every subsequent project. But this approach doesn’t serve our clients well. We make decisions too early, and end up solving the wrong problems. We keep going through the motions even when we realise we’re heading down the wrong path, because we don’t want to be seen as inconsistent.

The benefits of pair programming are well-known but enabling it is hard. It is clear that incorporating it into the workplace sustainably requires a fundamental shift in culture. After working at 2 startups who implemented different versions of pair programming, I came to Pivotal Labs with my own stories and preconceived notions. Pivotal Lab's engineers (and sometimes designers and product managers) pair program 8hours/day every workday and help enable other companies to practice it with us. It seems impossible but after spending a year fully immersed, the trends in having a sustainable pair programming culture have started to surface. Hear from someone who is a newfound believer in pair programming on the structure Pivotal Labs has put in place to enable it, war stories, and lessons learned.

For decades, classrooms have been dominated by one-way presentations. But in today’s world of unprecedented access to information, passive content broadcasts will most likely fall flat. By ditching traditional linear slides, conversational presenting allows you to focus on the most burning areas and maximize the learning for your class. During the session, you’ll learn how to use Slido to turn your Google Slides presentation into two-way conversation with your students at the center of it.

You already know the value of usability testing. But how do you convince everyone else? This mini-workshop will explain what has worked for facilitators Julie Grundy, Information Architect and UX Designer, Duke University, and Melissa Eggleston, Consultant. We will help attendees gain confidence in their ability to bring usability testing into their organization—despite little resources and time. Our goal is to arm each attendee with a practical guerrilla testing approach and a feeling that they can beat down the bureaucracies of higher ed. Participants will learn how to sell and conduct a usability test with minimal resources. They will also create a script in the workshop, customized to their institution.

To create confident problem solvers, we must not kill student thinking. Learn to use the 5 Principles of Conjecture, Communication, Collaboration, Chaos, and Celebration to design a classroom environment that promotes innovation, and allows students to communicate thinking clearly. Small groups will reflect on how this translates into classroom practice. They will also experience specific strategies associated with the 5 Principles and create a plan for redesigning their own school cultures.

Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking, usually ranks pretty high on surveys of 'what people fear'. And for good reason. We've all attended conferences where the keynote speakers were seriously injured after being hit by a torrent of rolled up feedback forms, or speakers were left bleeding from a rain of plastic name badges thrown Shuriken-like by the Ninja trained attendees. You can learn to avoid these outcomes, and when you do, you gain a skill that will win you recognition, improve your job prospects and allow you to travel the world talking to fellow testers. In this workshop Alan will provide hints and tips for improving your public speaking. Sharing, from experience, what works for him, and discuss some conventional wisdom on public speaking. Alan will also share a few secrets, and unconventional exercises that he uses to prepare. Public speaking is a skill we have to learn in public, but it is a skill, it is learn-able, and it is a skill that you can learn. Read more in the supporting blog post: http://blog.eviltester.com/2017/09/overcome-imposter-syndrome-public-speaking.html

How do you get a job in data science? Knowing enough statistics, machine learning, programming, etc to be able to get a job is difficult. One thing I have found lately is quite a few people may have the required skills to get a job, but no portfolio. While a resume matters, having a portfolio of public evidence of your data science skills can do wonders for your job prospects. Even if you have a referral, the ability to show potential employers what you can do instead of just telling them you can do something is important. This is a talk based on my original blog on Building a Data Science Portfolio: https://towardsdatascience.com/how-to-build-a-data-science-portfolio-5f566517c79c

Brian Housand, Ph.D. brianhousand.com Since the dawn of the computer revolution, the promise of PERSONAL Computing has been ever present. Yet, when we simply leave gifted kids to their own devices, technology can serve to depersonalize their experiences. However, this need not be the case. Together, we will explore the possibilities and potential afforded by today’s technology and empower you to utilize technology resources to make learning personal and meaningful for today’s connected gifted students.

Consigli pronti per l'uso, cosa funziona e cosa no.

Speaker Guide You’ve been selected to give a TEDx Talk. Congrats! You’re doing great so far. Now what? Over the years we’ve come up with a few dos and don’ts on how to give a great talk. Though these steps are in no way comprehensive, they contain some guiding principles that have been known to work. Step 1: Get familiar with the form » Step 2: Develop an idea » Step 3: Make an outline and script » Step 4: Create slides » Step 5: Rehearse » Step 6: Give your talk » Step 7: Savor the glory » 1) Get familiar with the form What is a TEDx Talk? TEDx Talks are a showcase for speakers presenting well-formed ideas in under 18 minutes. If you haven’t seen a TEDx Talk, go to TED.com and watch at least one. Like this one: Phil Plait: How to defend Earth from asteroids Why 18 minutes? Because it works. An audience is good at focusing on one subject at a time in relatively short chunks. But, really, can I go over 18 minutes? No -- it wouldn't be a TEDx Talk. The time limit is part of what makes TEDx Talks work. And remember: Shorter talks are not lesser talks. It may only take 5 minutes to make your point unforgettably. Like this one: Joe Smith: How to use a paper towel 2) Develop an idea What makes a good idea for a talk? Like a good magazine article, your idea can be new or surprising, or challenge a belief your audience already has. Or it can be a great basic idea with a compelling new argument behind it. An idea isn’t just a story or a list of facts. A good idea takes evidence or observations and draws a larger conclusion. Do I need to be an expert on my topic? You do not need to be the world’s foremost expert on the topic, but you do have to be an expert. Please remember that the audience relies on you to give accurate information, so whatever you say in your talk, please fact-check — especially facts you may take for granted: statistics, historical anecdotes, scientific stats. If you're drawing an example from a discipline that is not your main area of knowledge, use research from widely accepted and peer-reviewed sources, and, if at all possible, consult with experts directly. Is my idea ready? http://www.ted.com/talks/phil_plait_how_to_defend_earth_from_asteroids.html http://www.ted.com/talks/phil_plait_how_to_defend_earth_from_asteroids.html http://www.ted.com/talks/joe_smith_how_to_use_a_paper_towel.html http://www.ted.com/talks/joe_smith_how_to_use_a_paper_towel.html Write your idea down in one or two sentences. Ask yourself three questions: Is my idea new? Are you telling people something you're pretty sure they have not heard before? Is it interesting? Think about how your idea might apply to a room full of varied kinds of people. Who might be interested in it? Is it factual and realistic? If you are presenting new research, make sure your idea is backed by data and peer- reviewed. If you are presenting a call to action, make sure it can be executed by members of your audience.
