  2. Explain accessing My Central Current Students Student E-mail Follow instructions on screen
  3. The Student Portal can be found under Current Students on Central Institute of Technology website www.central.wa.edu.au Here students will need their ID and password The student portal gives access to personal information, results and Jobs Central If students have any problems accessing the Student Portal , they should check that their fees are up to date and then see the Library staff. the use of computing facilities is bound by regulations and acceptable use - please refer to the Essentials Handbook or the website for details Student accounts are monitored for illegal, inappropriate restricted or objectionable material, but student privacy is respected. The logon is used for all student access in class, the Library and the Student Portal on the website. Their computer password is also found at the bottom of the form. This password will not work if they haven’t paid their fees
  4. The Code offers you a framework of acceptable behaviour and covers numerous issues including these ones on screen. Things like photocopying, referencing, appropriate computer use etc are covered in the code make sure you are not breaching copyright or committing plagiarism! Equal Opportunity legislation is respected and practised at Central Institute of Technology and all students and staff have equal right to access to their education and employment. Discrimination at any level will not be tolerated.
  5. If lecturers have prescribed books, point these out on the learning plan and advise students where they can obtain the books The bookshop has textbooks, stationery and supporting materials required for your course They also issue student cards - necessary for using the library and accessing printing and photocopying They also have bargain non-academic books, art supplies, cards, gift-wrapping and posters
  6. Libraries can help you with all your learning needs. They have books, DVDs, CDs, online Subject Guides, fast, internet-ready computers, wifi access, photocopying and printing facilities and of course friendly staff to help you. As well as books and journals there are a huge range of online databases and e-books, as well as helpful tutorials. You can get more information from ‘Library Services for Students ’ available from the library.
  7. It is suggested that Portfolios or Lecturers add a customised Learning Plan to this slide. Explain that Learning Plans are the standard document used across the College to communicate delivery and assessment information to students Discuss best method of contacting lecturer to make an appointment Resource requirements Elements or Learning Outcomes Critical aspects of evidence Assessment summary and due dates – explain that more detailed information will be provided about assessments Weekly topic structure preparation for sessions Expectations about attendance Inform the students that if they have not received a Learning Plan within the first week of semester, they should speak to their lecturer. Mutual Recognition If students have previously completed this unit of competency at another Registered Training Organisation, Central will recognise their previous statement of attainment and add that to their academic record.
  8. Central is a ‘Vocational Education & Training ‘ (VET) organisation where the emphasis is to prepare students for the workforce. Competency Based Training (CBT) is the way courses are delivered and assessed. It means you are able to do the job to the standard required by industry. CBT teaches you and assesses you on the whole task. To give you an analogy – if the course was about baking a cake, you need to prove not just that you can memorise a recipe or have a good mixing technique but that you can put all the skills together to make a cake to the standard required by industry. Marks are not given. You are simply assessed as to whether you are competent or not.
  9. Summative Assessment is the final assessment that is the sum of unit or pre-determined milestone along the way (sometimes called assessment of learning) Formative Assessment is undertaking at any time along the way and is an opportunity for students and lecturers to check students progress (sometimes called assessment for learning )
  10. Cheating, plagiarism and collusion are deemed serious offences and will not be tolerated at Central Institute of Technology. Check your Essentials Handbook for a full definition of these terms and the consequences of academic misconduct. To avoid undue stress and possible re-enrolment, please make sure you fully understand these terms and their significance to all your assessments. Check with your lecturer or librarian if you are not sure. Lecturers should refer to Academic Practice @ Central http://centralnetarchive/ems/online/P04A.pdf
  11. Please ensure that you know exactly what is required of you in the assessment e.g. is it a report or an essay, length, presentation etc… Please ensure you have an electronic copy of your assessment in case your original is misplaced. Plagiarism is a very important issue, make sure that the work you submit is your own and that you correctly acknowledge the work that you find in books, journals and websites. Contribute to improvements in assessment processes by completing student feedback surveys and focus groups when invited to do so
  12. Assessment and result codes are; CO - Competent R- Re enrol H- Hold A reminder: You need to have paid all your fees to get your results!
  13. Students will be offered the opportunity to complete a Learner Needs Checklist [F04A3 on policies procedures forms on the staff intranet] which provides the study area with an indication of the support required by individual students. This allows the College to provide you with some assistance which will aid you with your studies and ensure your success.
  14. The Desk aims to support students to achieve mental and physical health and wellbeing. Being a student can be a challenging time and many students do not access support services for a range of reasons including time pressures, not knowing where to go for help and feeling embarrassed. Providing resources online means that more people will be able to get help to improve their wellbeing and be able to study more effectively. thedesk offers free access to online modules, tools, quizzes and advice. Study Skills Workshops - students who need help with: Writing their assignments Referencing, or are anxious about upcoming exams.
  15. If you find that things aren’t working and you are considering withdrawing, TALK to your lecturers first. They can suggest options for you and help you out. e.g.: You can withdraw from one unit without having to withdraw from the whole course. Before you withdraw, contact the Student Success Centre on 9202 4323 to discuss your options Withdrawals can be made in person at the front desk, by emailing enquiry@central.wa.edu.au, by fax or letter. No academic penalty – but it does show up on your academic transcript Full refunds can be obtained if Central cancels the class for a number of reasons (e.g. declining student numbers) Withdraw officially, especially if on a payment plan, as you are still responsible for the debt. Only students who experience financial hardship can request to pay by instalments. Details of the refund policy is on the back of the enrolment form
  16. VET Fee Help Students – students who withdraw formally on or before the Census Date for their unit/s will not incur a VET Fee Help debt with the Commonwealth Government.  Upfront part payments will be refunded, if a student withdraws before the Census Date. No refunds are paid if you withdraw after the Census Date.  No incidental fees are refunded.  Important: please check your enrolment record to confirm the actual Census Date for your unit/s.  Your enrolment record can be accessed via the Student Portal on Central’s Website (www.central.wa.edu.au).
  17. Feedback Student compliments/complaints If you have an issue with your studies please approach your lecturer first on an individual basis. If you are still not satisfied, then approach the Principal Lecturer or Learning Portfolio Manager of the area to see if it can be resolved. Should you still feel aggrieved, then we have a complaints officer and you can put your complaint in writing. The forms for complaints are available from the reception counter at student services. Please allow the portfolio the opportunity to deal with the issue before making a formal complaint. Unit evaluation forms are used throughout the college to gather your feedback on your studies – please help us by completing them Please remember staff also appreciate the occasional compliment.
