news, advertising, new revenue streams, online community for daily newspaper/portal. Exit: First 10%
company staff reduction. (Staff was dispersed to related print departments.)
• Built new business line from analysis and insights from customer metrics: Found pattern
that identified new advertising target segment, and led team to develop self-service tools for
these new customers to upsell themselves to additional products online.
• Conceived and led early online community: Our novel, semi-automated system allowed a
small staff to handle comments that skyrocketed from zero to over 10,000 a month, while
2. minimizing and punishing bad behavior by visitors.
• Improved customer service: Engaged customer service staff in other departments and
customers in the process of designing online customer service tools: extended service hours to
24/365, and enabled increases in measured customer satisfaction, number of customers
handled per day, and revenue.
• Increased visitors: While print circulation remained stable for our 251st
largest market area,
