In this new race, economic competition among nations will be less on physical assets and more on knowledge assets. Pakistan must take urgent and substantive steps to build its ecosystem and knowledge culture to leapfrog ahead. What needs to be done? In my course on Marketing Strategies for Emerging Economies, Summer 2019 students of the Institute of Business Management, Karachi, Pakistan were asked to come up with recommendations. This is an example of some of the best work submitted.

3. Problem In Pakistan’s Education System
■ Pakistan has the world's second-highest number of out-of-school children (OOSC) with
an estimated 22.8 million children aged 5-16 not attending school, representing 44 per
cent of the total population in this age group.
■ People don’t have access to quality education
■ Very little work being done in area of research
■ Number of technology and research centres in Pakistan are very low
5. Swiss Innovation Park
■ Objective is to make Switzerland globally renowned and competitive in terms of
innovation and technology.
■ Serves as breeding ground for innovation
■ It provides space and infrastructure for innovation
■ Connect universities with companies to make marketable products
■ Has a network of five innovation parks in different locations to cover different
geographic regions
6. Swiss Innovation Park
■ Areas of innovation include medical sciences. energy, mobility and transportation,
computation and materials engineering.
■ Its internal working environment consist of board committee, innovation board,
advisory board and office.
■ Office executes command of innovation and committee board
■ Success factors include infrastructure, highly educated and talented pool of
people, strategic partners, networks, investment in research and technology
7. Swiss Innovation Park
Commercialization Example: Self Driving Electrical Buses
■ BestMile company in collaboration with Swiss Institute of technology developed self
driving electrical shuttles.
■ The project is successfully running in Swiss streets since March 2018
Commercialization Example: Spectro VR
■ A technology developed by Park Basel based on VR and AR to help doctors
■ Help doctors visually analyse any organ in 3D space before making an actual surgery.
■ They can analyse the organ from any angle and can make cuts etc. virtually
8. Germany: Fraunhoffer Research Center

The organization's research focuses on the needs of people in the areas of:
– Health and environment.
– Security and protection.
– Communication and knowledge.
– Mobility and transport.
– Energy and resources.
– Production and supply of services
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was founded in Munich in 1949.
9. Germany: Fraunhofer Research Center
Leading organization for applied research in Europe.
Research activities are conducted by 72 institutes and research units.
At year end 2018 , Fraunhofer had 26,648 employees, 18,913 of whom were research,

factors in achieving commercial success.
Mostly undertakes Public and government projects
11. Germany: Fraunhofer Research Center
The Fraunhofer’s primary mission is to perform contract research for German industry,
particularly SME.
Perform research and test industrial processes on their premises which enjoy state of the art
equipment and deep human competencies.
Each Fraunhofer institute specializes in a particular technology or sector.
Each Fraunhofer institute is paired with a German university and can utilize the most
promising students as part-time researchers.
The institutes generate technology for commercial products and processes, enable
companies to test equipment and industrial processes on pilot manufacturing lines, and foster
a continual flow of trained engineers and technicians to the private sector.

Commercialization: So Pro India
■ A solar that uses solar energy as well as water to produce power
Commercialization: Disabled People Robot
■ A robot that would help disabled people to perform their routine tasks.
Key Success Factors
Has created 150 spin-off companies, with a very high rate of success.
Germany pioneered in today’s knowledge-based global economy.
Until the early Twentieth Century was the acknowledged world leader in science and the
translation of scientific knowledge into commercial products.
Do not offer the prospect of radical, paradigm-shattering technologies.
Distinction results from innovation.
Fraunhofer projects appear to involve less bureaucracy, faster time-to-market, and greater
probability of success.
14. Suggestions for Pakistan
■ Pakistan should keep a good amount of budget for research and education
■ Pakistan should invest in creating research and technology centers as well as schools and
institutes.
■ Technical education should be made part of secondary education
■ Out of date syllabus should be changed and syllabus should be updated on regular basis
■ Quality education should be made accessible to every child whether wealthy or poor
■ Universities should have state of the art labs and research facilities.
15. Suggestions for Pakistan
■ Provide economic incentives to the students which may encourage the parents to send
their children to school and may help in reducing the dropout ratio.
■ Counselling to children should be provided so that they have an understanding of job
market as well as parents should be counselled as well, so that they can choose a career
for their child which is market friendly
■ This aspiration for sending children for higher education should be changed. People should
send their children to school for learning instead of earning a bread and butter job
16. Solutions for Pakistan
■ A government owned research facilities should be created like Swiss innovation
park
■ This would provide incubation space, infrastructure, technology, equipments, labs
needed by the researchers and the companies
■ These centers would serve as a bridge between companies, researchers,
companies universities.
■ The collaboration would result in innovative products and services in the area of
AI, computation, energy, medical sciences needed by Pakistan to transform
towards a knowledge economy.
■ This will also improve the global image of Pakistan
■ It will generate new streams of revenue for the country
