This document outlines 7 steps for research success: 1. Questioning - Ask essential questions that are broad in scope and invite higher-order thinking. 2. Essential Questions - These questions have no single answer, promote analysis and evaluation, and provoke interest. 3. Choosing an Essential Question - An example multiple choice question is provided to distinguish an essential question from a non-essential one. 4. Brainstorming - Take time to think about research goals and which graphic organizer will be used before gathering information. 5. Gathering and Finding Resources - Use provided external links and library books first before other sources. 6. Evaluating Resources - Refer to evaluation

3. Essential Question
• They are broad in nature (big picture).
• They are central to the content of the unit
or subject.
• They have no single correct or obvious
answer. The question cannot be answered
by a quick and simple “yes” or “no”
answer
• They invite higher-order thinking, including
analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating (use
these words in your question).
• They provoke interest and allow others to
draw from experience.

• Take a moment to think about your goal…
• What facts and ideas would you like to
learn?
• What kind of Graphic Organizer are you
going to use.
• Remember to collect citations as you look
at information.

8. Gather and Find Resources
Then Evaluate!!
• If you look in your blackboard site, you will
find external links. This is a great place to
find save resource links. Use these first
and books from the media center first.
• How do I know if the book or web site is a
good resource.
• Go to Criteria for Evaluation
