Housekeeping 1. Write these dates down!!! Grammar quiz on Wednesday, Apr. 14th Short story quiz the following Monday, Apr. 19th Checking feedback and marks Deadline for work on Short Stories is Monday, Apr. 19th (same day as exam).
Preparing for Quiz and Exam Review study sheets and do any suggested practice Re-read stories and review your homework (both the questions and the vocabulary) Review the handout “Short Story Terms” Brief In-class Review Grammar Q and A session on Monday Short story study session on Wednesday
Pronoun Agreement and Reference Pronouns must agree in number with the noun they replace (its antecedent) NOT: The student forgot their homework. BUT: The student forgot his homework. NOT: Sally eats lots of vegetables because she believes it is really healthy. BUT: Sally eats lots of vegetables because she believes they are really healthy.
Activity 1, p. 472 Write the appropriate pronoun (their, they, them, it) in the blank space in each of the following sentences. 1. their - people 2. it - workout 3. their - partners 4. they - students 5. them - neighbours
Indefinite Pronouns We’ve already learned that indefinate pronouns (-one words, –body words, each, etc.) are always singular. So, pronouns that replace or refer to them must also always be singular. Ex: Everyone must be in his seat before the instructor takes attendance. However, this is a bit unsatisfactory. Why?
Indefinite Pronouns If the class contains both genders, you can write: Ex: Everyone must be in his or her seat before the instructor takes attendance. Or, rewrite the sentence in the plural to avoid the awkward “his or her”: Ex: Students must be in their before the instructor takes attendance.
Activity, top of p. 473 Underline the correct pronoun. Check your answers against a classmate’s. 1. his 2. her 3. his 4. her 5. her Make note of any disagreements to discuss.
Pronoun Reference, p. 473 Careless use of pronouns can result in confusing sentences: Ex: Joe almost dropped out of high school because he felt they emphasized discipline too much. Who does “they” refer to? Replace “they” with a clear noun: Ex: Joe almost dropped out of high school because he felt the teachers emphasized discipline too much.
Activity 3, p. 474 Review the other examples before doing this activity. Then, rewrite each of the following sentences to make the vague pronoun reference clear. Add, change, or omit words as necessary. 1. Maria’s mother let Maria wear her own earrings. Maria’s mother let Maria to wear her new earrings to school. Maria wears to school her new earrings because her mom let. Maria wears her new earrings to school by her mother’s permission. Maria wore her new earrings to school after her mother gave her permission. 2. When I asked the examiner why I falied my drivers test he said because I drove to slow. The examiner said, “You failed your driver’s test,” because I drove to slow. The examiner told me I failed my driver’s test because I drove to slow. When I asked why I failed my driver’s test, he said, “You drove too fast.” 3. My brother painted the garage door because my father didn’t want to do it. (meaning changed) My brother didn’t want to paint the garage, so my father ordered him to do it. . . . . because my brother didn’t want to do it. 4. Herb dropped his psychology courses because he thought the teachers assigned too much homework. 5 I love parmesan . . . . ., but I cannot always digest parmesan well
To Build a Fire Discussion - Vocabulary Let’s discuss any interesting or tricky vocabulary
“To Build a Fire” Foreshadowing the dog is afraid before the man is the narrator’s statement that the man observes things but doesn’t understand their meaning/importance It is much colder than he thinks spit freezes – shows very cold the man thinks it is 50 below; the narrator says it is even colder (70 below) many of the signs of how cold it is the flashbacks to the warnings of the old timer
“To Build a Fire” - Questions Remember to First state your answer clearly in your own words (present tense). Then, give specific examples from the story (paraphrase or quote). Explain what the example shows or proves. Answer all parts of the question.
Brief Feedback on “The Metaphor” Questions Overall everyone’s work was much better. There are a couple of points we need to talk about: Author’s Purpose the short stories are fiction the characters and events are imaginary they may be based on author’s experience but they may not be when a question asks you about “author’s purpose” it is usually means “author’s theme” or “message.”
“The Metaphor” Questions - Feedback 2. Plagiarism copying exact words or phrases from the story as if they are your own without using quotation marks copying words from other sources like books and websites copying answers from other students Penalties: Zero (0) on the question; Zero (0) on the entire assignment if it happens on more than one question.
Homework “To Build a Fire” questions due Monday, Apr. 12th. Study for Grammar quiz (Wed. April 14th) Study for Short Story exam (Monday, April 19th) Final deadline for all late short story assignments is Monday, April 19th.
