Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills
Readers are frequently frustrated when they meet unfamiliar vocabulary words as they read. But jumping up and
grabbing a dictionary takes too much time. Readers need to take what they know and gather clues in the text to decode
the meaning of vocabulary.
The following are strategies that you can use in finding the meaning of unfamiliar words:
A. Context Clues – is a clue or a hint in a sentence that helps you figure out words that you don’t know. It helps you
realize a meaning of a word by relating it to other words in a sentence or we get a meaning of a word by studying its
relationship to other words in the sentence. Some clues are more obvious than others.
The following shows the five types of context clues and examples for each.
1. Definition and Restatement – Words or phrases that define the unfamiliar word or restate it in more familiar language.
Example: Her poem crackled with alliteration, the repetition of consonant sounds
For Grade 5 and Grade 6: Whole Class Discussion
Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills
2. Synonym – The word that is similar in meaning with an unfamiliar word.
Example: I could not understand the given problem on our test because the statements are
ambiguous or unclear to me.
3. Antonym – A word that is opposite in meaning with an unfamiliar word.
Example: The symphony is dissonant, rather than harmonious, its sound conveyed the
chaos and horror of war.
4. Cause and Effect – A word or phrase related to the unfamiliar word by cause or effect.
Example: Because he rebelled against convention, Byron is seen as iconoclast.
B. Structural Analysis – is breaking down the basic parts of a word to determine its
meaning. Breaking down refers to identifying the root word and affixes used.
Root word is the is the basic part of the word which has no affix.
Examples: From the word restart, the root word is start.
From the word printer, the root word is print.
Affix is one or more letters that is attached in the beginning or ending of a root word to
form a new word. It can be prefix or suffix.
Prefix is an affix placed before the word to change its meaning or function.
Examples: re, de, sub, on, off, hyper, micro, ultra, mega, tri, multi, inter, dis, anti, semi,
extra, over, pre, up, down.
Suffix is an affix placed at the end of a word to change its meaning or function.
