2. ROBIN
Jim Corbett was born on 25 July, 1875.
He was best known for being a hunter, conservationist
and naturalist. He held the honor of killing many man-
eating tigers and leopards in India, especially the United
Provinces (now the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh &
Uttarakhand). Being a multi-faceted personality, he was
also avid photographer and an author. In fact, after his
retirement, Jim wrote a number of books on wildlife,
describing his hunts and experiences, the most prominent
ones being 'Maneaters of Kumaon' and 'Jungle Lore'. He
is also credited for speaking on the need to save wildlife
from extinction. For this very reason, the Corbett National
Park in Kumaon has been named after him.
He died in Kenya on April 19, 1955.
3. ROBIN
Jim Corbett accidentally bought a spaniel puppy, named
Pincha. Later he named it Robin.
Robin had his first exposure to
hunting, specially in the process
of pursuing and retrieving, when
Corbett shot down a peafowl.
4. ROBIN
Once Robin chased a Langur and gained experience in facing
danger, while chasing him.
Robin’s heart was weak because of malnutrition during his
childhood days.
5. ROBIN
Corbett started training him for hunting big game. They spent
summer on hills where Robin learnt many valuable lessons.
Robin and Corbett followed
tracks together, when pug
marks or blood trails could
seen.
One day, Robin and Corbett
was hunting a leopard
Corbett had shot him but he
missed his heart.
6. ROBIN
They started tracking the wounded leopard’s blood trail.
Tracking continued the next morning.
7. ROBIN
A group of chitals that could sense the presence of a leopard,
had been of a great help to Corbett. They indicated the
direction of the place where the wounded leopard was lying.
9. ROBIN
It was Robin, who, by sniffing the wind, helped Corbett to
locate the exact position of the leopard.
The leopard suddenly sprang towards them, when Corbett
promptly shot him.
10. ROBIN
Robin, being scared, left the spot immediately to hide himself
in a secured place.
This was the only incident when Robin left Corbett during
hunt. But a little later, he crept silently to Corbett, feeling very
ashamed of his action.
11. ROBIN
When Jim Corbett was writing this story, his large hearted
friend Robin was languishing of old age and soon passed
away.
The story of ‘Robin’ is included in his world famous book:
“Man-eaters of Kumaon”.
