1. Wanneer gebruik je THE
Het woordje THE betekent natuurlijk de of het. Het woordje THE
wordt in het Engels alleen niet altijd gebruikt wanneer wij dat in het
Nederlands wel zouden doen.
Bv. Hij ligt in het ziekenhuis
He is in hospital.
Als je in het Engels het gebruik van een gebouw bedoelt (dus wat er
in dat gebouw gedaan wordt, bv. leren (school), bidden
(church/mosque), straf uitzitten (jail/prison)) laten ze THE weg.
Bv. He is in jail/prison
She went to church to pray
The children are at school
2. Dit is van toepassing bij de volgende woorden:
school, university, college, prison, jail, hospital, church, mosque.
MAAR:
Als het gaat over het gebouw zelf, of waar het gebouw bevind,
dan gebruik je wel THE.
• Bv. The school is in the Kruidenlaan.
• The hospital has a helicopter landing.
• There was a break out at the prison.
