2. 1. Creative use of your artist (or artists) styles. Consider how
what tools and techniques you use to paint the canvas carefully
2. Good composition – think about how the image fits on the
canvas:
• Foreground/background
• Cropping & scale
• Focus point
3. Use of tone – ensuring there is a good range of light to dark
with shadows and highlights
4. Skilled use of paint :
• Sharp edges where required (control)
• Creative brush marks where required
• Layering in depth & colour
• Detail
• Quality of paint: considered thickness and use of water
• Depth and space where required
3. Creating layers helps built up
depth in your painting as you
can see from the example to
the right.
• Under painting
• Layer 1
• Layer 2
• Layer 3 - 5
4. This layer is a wash of colour that puts in the tones. You put in your darks, mids and leave
some high lights.
It should be a wash and NOT thick.
This will help you ensure tone and contrast is not over come by colour alone.
5. On this layer add in some
colour all over.
MAINTAIN tone
Include the background
This can be thicker or a deeper
wash
6. Build up the tones and
the contrast
Ensure you are happy
with tone, colours and
over all effect before
moving on to the next
final layers.
Ensure your back ground
is complete
7. Ensure you have all your
colours mixed on your
palette.
This is where you add in the
very fine detail!
Deepen contrast.
Add highlights.
Use a fine brush for the
small details and final
textures.
Working mainly on the
foreground so it sits on top
of the background.
8. • Refine
• Small detail
• Small brush
• Be critical
• Look at how the dark areas have
been deepened on the final layer
• Look at the sharpness on the edge
of the petals and the final
highlights all painted in with a
small brush.
