Essay on Intel
H.E BUTT GROCERY COMPANY The New Digital Strategy ; A Leader in ECR Implementation
SITUATIONAL STATEMENT In the year 2000, the internet was emerging as a new distribution
channel that would transform the grocery industry by providing a powerful communications
network for the direct sale of groceries to the consumer. The internet was also a promising tool for
the way that business to business transactions would take place. There were new opportunities to
gain efficiencies in the supply chain and in the distribution channels. Given that the grocery industry
is extremely competitive, Fully Clingman the president and CEO of H.E.B. Grocery Company are
placing renewed emphasis on technology and new systems to gain greater market share ... Show

On top of this H.E.B needs to focus on adapting products and services to changing customer habits.

ANALYSIS STRENGTHS (A) The New Digital Strategy In 1999 HEB is currently ranked 14th
among the leading grocery retailers in Texas with 240 stores and $6.5 billion in sales. With the
grocery business becoming more streamlined and extremely competitive HEB will have to
constantly get getter and more efficient in their supply and most importantly their distribution
channels, to further reduce costs. Realizing this, HEB is very strong at implementing and seeking
new technologies to help them with inventory, suppliers, stocking, distribution, customer relations
and scanning. They have gained and will continue to gain strength in the future through injecting
new efficiencies in the supply and distribution chains. They created (SRS) store replenishment
systems to trigger supplies and (POS) point of sales data to further understand their distribution
process. HEB essentially realized the importance of new digital strategies (new digital efficient

The Porter Five forces analysis is as follows:
Threat of New Entrants:
The market is packed with many players. Previously Sainsbury and Tesco has been the dominating
force in the UK grocery retail market. There are no real barriers that can thwart the entrance of a
new player in the market. The most important aspect is the attainment of the economies of scale for
the retailers. This is facilitated by the different types of suppliers in the market. However, the entrant
must have sufficient knowledge to operate profitably in the UK market.
Bargaining Power of suppliers:
The bargaining power of suppliers is well built in the UK grocery market. This is accentuated by the
fact that big retailers can offer more competitive prices to suppliers which may pose problem for
smaller retailers. This has an instant impact on the profit of the retailers and Aldi uses it to its
advantage by offering competitive deals to minimize the competition.
Bargaining power of customers:
The bargaining power of customers is very high; it could be construed that the consumers dictate the
grocery market and the loyalty effect is very difficult to achieve. This particular aspect also has a
strategic perspective; therefore as products become standardized the switching cost for the
customers is pretty low. It is for this reason, many retailers have strategically retorted to expansion
in other businesses. However, in order to remain competitive, Aldi will

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese VS generic brand

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Vs. Generic Brand
Everyone has his or her own personal preference towards buying generic or name brand products.
When shopping in a grocery store does the type of pasta really matter to you? How about the type of
macaroni and cheese you reach for? Same ingredients, same directions on how to mix and stir up the
final manufactured goods but is it really the "same". To a lot of people it might not make a
difference, but like me, a lot of people prefer spending the extra 50 cents on a box of "Kraft
Macaroni and Cheese" and it's worth every penny. Is it the taste that you are paying for? Or maybe
it's the quality of the product that you're basing it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Kraft Company has been around for a long time now. Personally I believe you must have a
protective firm, not allowing other companies to steal your ideas and product. This will give the firm
advantage over others. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese is dominating the market with almost 1 million
boxes sold a day. They have to keep up their revenue by attracting a new fan base. Shapes and
designs of pasta are surprisingly essential for Kraft. Over 2000 patents of shaped macaroni and
cheese have been officially signed for and used, only about 280 have been obtained by Kraft
Macaroni and Cheese. One of their biggest selling characters and patents is SpongeBob Square
Pants, a TV show that has been on air for about 12 years now. Kids thrive for the little macaroni
shapes of SpongeBob, Sandy, Patrick, and Mr. Crabs. When Kraft came out with these shapes they
couldn't produce enough of them for mom's and their kids. Sales rocketed through the roof and Kraft
Macaroni and Cheese monopolized the competition with this brand new shape that no one else could
use. Knowing exactly what to market at a specific time is huge when it comes to any company that
wants to be successful. This is what sets them apart from the rest and has given them that extra
economic profit. Macaroni shapes are not the only ingredients that set them apart from the rest.

Analysis Of The Supervalu Board Of Directors
First Recommendation
Based on our analysis of both the internal and external aspects of SuperValu, one of our
recommendation for the SuperValu board of directors is to sell off the grocery retail business unit.
SuperValu does not have the internal resources to continue competing in this highly competitive
industry. The company is also not able to strategically place itself in the market compared to
competitors because they are not a low cost leader, nor do they have a premium product. Walmart
and Aldi will continue to take revenues from Cub and other SuperValu owned grocers in the future,
while Whole Foods and other specialty stores will continue to offer better products that match
external trends. In addition to the growing competition, SuperValu's financial performance has been
below or stagnant relative to their competitors and the industry overall. The company revealed that
about half its revenues and one–third its earnings come from the distribution business, which
continues to grow and currently services about 2,500 independent retailers from 19 distribution
centers. During that same quarter, same–store sales at its supermarket locations dropped about 4.5
percent, with even Save–A–Lot outlets registering 4.1 percent decreases in same–store sales.
Acquisition
Fortunately for SuperValu, Roundy's, a once scalable competitor in the grocery retail industry, was
acquired by Kroger in November 2015. This leaves SuperValu with a plethora of information on
funds received,

my town of Stockbridge, Ga. In a 20 minute interview I asked him questions pertaining to the
process his company uses that are critical to the effectiveness, profitability, and flow of products
bought from his store.

Kroger
Kroger Cody Butler, Ahmad Damra, & Doug Edwards Sullivan University Kroger Since it first
began in the late 1800's, Kroger had been a store motivated to expand its role in the community.
After first starting out by selling grocery items to customers, it began to also sell bakery items and
opened bakeries within the grocery store itself. This was a big convenience for the consumer to be
able to shop for most of their grocery items within the same store. The company then set its sights
on the meat industry by purchasing several meat markets and packing plants. This allowed them to
provide cuts of meat to their customers so that they didn't have to go to another store to purchase
meats. Once again, they found a needed service ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The supercenters are not concerned with making a large profit margin on their food products that
they are selling, instead they are using the food products to entice shoppers into their stores and then
they are able to make their higher profit margins on none food items that they sell to the consumer
while they are shopping. By not needing to maintain a high profit margin on the food items, this has
allowed the supercenters to keep their food prices down in comparison with most traditional
supermarkets. [ (Senauer & Seltzer, 2010) ] The recession, which started in 2008, has helped
drive the need for private–label products, or as they are more commonly called, store brand
products. These private–label products generally cost the consumers about twenty–five percent less
than the major national brands that are offered. Throughout the supermarkets and other types of food
retailers, the private–label sales grew by more than 9% from 2008 to 2009, and these types of
private–label sales accounted for about 35% of Kroger's overall sales. Most stores do not operate
their own processing plants for these private–label items; Kroger does however operate their own
plants for the private–label products. [ (Senauer & Seltzer, 2010) ] Point of Sale (POS) data
systems have allowed the supermarkets and supercenters, to be able to better understand the
consumer purchasing behaviors. This has allowed the stores

Case Study Of Musgrave
Executive Summary Marketing is the art of exploring, creating and delivering value different from
competitors to satisfy the needs of a target market at a profit. It is a very important function of a
business who prioritises their main focus towards attracting the customers with the right formula of
creating, planning, executing and delivering the right product and services at the right time with the
objectives of satisfying their customers requirement. Retailing is a very competitive industry so it

This enables them to offer products at an affordable price, without compromising on quality.
Weakness Lack of scale In terms of operational scale, Musgrave suffers a competitive disadvantage
with only operations in Ireland, Northern Ireland and a small fraction in Spain. They are competing
with the Big retail brands in the Industry such as Tesco, Lidl and Aldi who dominates the sector
globally on a larger scale therefore it gives them more of a purchasing and bargaining power
advantage over Musgrave retail partners which they might not be able to sustain. Opportunity In the
recent past, Musgrave had made some clever strategic decision when it comes to acquiring similar
business models to strengthen its business presence in Ireland and parts of Northern Ireland. The
purchases of Superquinn gave them a strong brand presence in Ireland making up most of the
market retail share in the Irish food service industry. By Partnering with Bord Bia, they launched its

Athenos Hummus
Kraft Athenos Hummus:
Marketing through sports
Executive Summary
Hummus is already a popular choice among endurance athletes. Competition among brands within
this portion of the target market is important and therefore, should become a focus of the Athenos
brand. Athenos has not yet utilized sports marketing to promote the brand, but with a focus on the
hummus products, a sports overlay can be very effective to target key consumers. Athenos currently
falls behind Sabra as the market leader in hummus and because neither brand currently markets their
products through sports, this is a vital opportunity for Athenos to increase their market share and
gain popularity among consumers.

Athenos is sold in the refrigeration section of most major local grocery stores placed alongside other
snack dips and spreads. Athenos should continue to distribute to major grocery store chains as
hummus is popular as a convenient healthy snack purchase. Athenos is marketed through individual
retail sales by way of wholesale to grocery chains rather than through large quantity sales to
restaurants where the need is not as high. Outside of major grocery store chains, Athenos should
seek to sell their hummus products at selected sports venues specific to endurance sports in order to
gain sales within the market.
Promotion
Promotion is "perhaps the easiest variable to use in an effort to develop a sports overlay for the
implementation of a mainstream strategy." (Fullerton, 2010). Athenos has most recently used the Yia
Yia (greek for grandmother) campaign developed by Droga5. "Yiayia represents old world Greece,
Greek values, and most importantly she represents preparing food the right way." (Droga5, 2011).
Most importantly her approval is a sign of quality and she approves of Athenos hummus. The
campaign was effective but Athenos still continues to struggle and remains behind the market leader,
Sabra.

In terms of the business, a booming cat population could attract more companies to introduce
enhanced version of this product in this industry where there are no barriers to entry.
Market and competitive analysis:
There are estimated to be 66 million cats in North America. This estimate has risen by 7 percent
between 1994 and 1996 and is estimated to grown at an annual rate of 4% over next few years.
There has been an uptrend in multiple cat households which is primarily due to the ease of care and
maintenance for cats relative to other pets.
Omega Paw has segmented its market into three divisions. 5% of the cat owners are new or first
time owners while 80% of the owners are experienced. The rest of the 15% are segmented in the
"gray zone" where owners keep their pets outdoors and therefore only spend on food. Omega Paw
should focus its marketing in the first two segments as those owners are likely to research and
browse information about the best available products for their feline friends. The 80% segment
could be divided more in to smaller segments with pet owners who prefer to use basic traditional
equipment versus owners who are willing to try new products to see if it matches their needs.

1. Evaluate Supervalu's new professional development program. What do you like/dislike about it?
Will it appeal to college recruits? Why or why not?
Supervalu designed a program named Professional Development Program (PDP) because Paul
Cimmerer wanted to attract high potential college graduates who want to make careers in
distribution, category management, retail, and corporate activities. The reason for the attraction is
because upper management believed that the company lacked experience workers for entry level

Another challenge that PDP might face in the future is that there are too many risks attached to the

is nothing in it for them. The opportunity of career development and growth are directed towards
graduates in which might upset current employees as they feel neglected. Another challenge is that
the program isolates people with a GPA of 3 or higher. There should be other ways to seek out
talent. A potential challenge that the company could run into is that the individual invested into does
not stay with the company or later down the road is not the ideal candidate for the company. The
company runs the risk of losing that trainee after investing so much into them. Another challenge is
that the program branches across a widespread that if one single entity does not cooperate, it could

Production Process And Nutritional Value Of The Foods
Over the past few decades, Americans have become far more conscious of the production process
and nutritional value of the foods they consume. Founded in 1980 in Austin, Texas, Whole Foods
Market is an international supermarket chain that specializes in organic foods and products. As early
as 1984, Whole Foods began expanding across the South and, soon afterwards, expanded to major
cities around the U.S. with new stores and strategic acquisitions. Although organic grocers and

Revenue and net income. Despite the United States' slow economic recovery, Whole Foods Market
has nearly quadrupled their revenues over the past ten years, from $4.5 to $15.4 billion. Net income
has also quadrupled in the past ten years, from $150 to $536 million, and has more than doubled
over the past six. This success can be traced back to a history of discovery and innovation in the
health and wellness industry, as well as the cultivation of a lifestyle surrounding customers who
shop at Whole Foods that increases both customer retention and satisfaction.
Same–store sales. These are an important metric because they indicate the ability of existing Whole
Foods stores to maintain customers and grow in the face of potential cannibalization and expanding
competition. Comparable store sales were positive every year but 2009 (the year of the Great
Recession). A concerning trend of slowing comparable store sales began in 2013. This trend can be
attributed to increased market saturation–Whole Foods now has multiple stores in many major
cities–but increased competition may be playing a significant role as well. Overall, growth is still
increasing on a store–by–store basis. While Whole Foods is still a successful company, a reversal of
this declining trend would be beneficial.
Worker efficiency. The efficiency of Whole Food's employees is indicative of the efficiency of
management.

Argumentative Essay On Landfills
Pre–Expired Food is Filling up Landfills
Many grocery stores across the United States dispose of pre–expired food instead of donating it to
homeless shelters, food banks or to families in need. Food that is not expired and is perfectly good
to consume is being thrown away by farmers and grocery stores because it is not aesthetically
pleasing. Annually, over 133 billion pounds of food are disposed of each year. (wync.org).
Approximately 95 percent of all wasted food will end up in a landfill, wasted food causes harm to
the environment. When food breaks down it produces methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas
that contributes to climate changes. (epa.org). Donating food can help two major problems, it can

When food gets dumped in landfills, it will eventually start to break down, once the food is broken
down it generates methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 23 times as potent as carbon dioxide

"landfills account for 34 percent of all methane emissions in the United States". (Scientific

We are not only wasting food, but we are wasting important resources as well. Peter Lehner of the

Slow growth for Internet–Based retailing
The growth of online retailing is quite slow in United States of America as compare to European
countries. There are very limited online services have been adopted by retailers in United States of
America. The big retailers of country have given just one option to their customer is that just buy
products online but pick yourself from your selected store. Such services are available on sites of
Wal–Mart, Delhaize and Meijer etc. The main reason of having slow growth of online retailers is the
delivery cost of groceries items and limited areas of delivery. There are two famous online retailers,
Peapod and Fresh Direct. They have expanded their delivery areas. The management of Peapod is
planning to provide their services of smartphones and social media sites by developing unique app.
The business of online retailing can be expanded if they target young population of country who are
more familiar with technology on daily basis as compare to their elders. There are five areas where

Case Study Of Supervalu Incorporation
Supervalu Incorporation is one of the largest grocery stores in the United States with more than
2,400 stores, among these stores the corporation also outsources to third parties which are not
named in this discussion (Edmonds, Tsay & Old, 2011). However, grocery stories that are the best
known that are in–house under the ownership of Supervalu are as followed; Albertson, Farm Fresh,
Jewel–Osco and Save–a–lot (Edmonds, Tsay, & Old, 2011). On January 12th, 2010 Supervalu made
the decision to reduce items from their present time inventory. The reduction would reduce the cost
of production by 25% from the last segment production earnings of 240,000 (Edmonds, Tsay & Old,
2011). In this discussion, we will try to deduce the effect and impact that will result in Supervalu
decision to reduce or eliminate an item from their inventory (Edmonds, Tsay & Old, 2011).
First, "Fiber–Treats" for a segment brought in a profit of $94,800 and secondly, Carbo– Crunch in
that same segment brought in a profit of $98,400, however, "Sugar ... Show more content on

What that means for the future segment for Supervalu, becomes an allocated saving of $1,900 from
the present–day fix cost salary of $9,600, leaving an expenditure and fixed cost of $8,400

from financing a new machine (Edmonds, Tsay & Old, 2011). Which bring into focus fixed assets,
the equipment in use for "sugar bits" is viable and can still produce the Fiber–Treats and Carbo–

The Transportation And Grocery Gaps Of San Diego
Listening to Sierra's answer, this customer's plight embodies the interconnectivity of the
transportation and grocery gaps that San Diego suffers from within areas in need. Though luckier
than most to have his own means of private transportation, this one particular customer was
compelled to drive a great distance to provide healthy juice for himself, a product that he would
otherwise be unexposed to without his car. As Gottlieb and Joshi highlight in their book Food
Justice, the link between the two aforementioned gaps grow wider and wider, feeding off each other
and intensifying the imbalances already existing (48). Therefore, an overabundance of fast food
filled the gaps between the market and the domestic areas, looking to attract high volume of in
transit customers on busy roadways, pushing nutrient food options further and further from dense
urban population. As a result, fast foods are purchased to conserve time, gas, and other expenses
encountered to simply achieve a journey to the grocery store. Even those stores that are nearby lack
truly nutritious options, and heavily advocate for non–healthy diets to become daily habits over the
wholesome alternative. Under those circumstances, local markets like Stehly Farms are far from
accessible to a great deal of the San Diegan population. In reality, this customer possesses fortunate
fundamentals such as knowledge, transportation, and free time to frequent such a wonderful market
and choose a healthier diet – in short, he

Grocery Store : A New And Innovative Product Called...
Many grocery stores across the globe encounter the inevitable problem of long grocery checkout
lines. Currently, the grocery industry cannot find an answer to this unambiguous problem. This is
partially because cashiers have to scan and bag every item that the given individual is purchasing
which can be quite time consuming and frustrating for customers. But what if this process was no
longer necessary? The solution to this age old predicament is a new and innovative product called
Grocery Gadget. The Grocery Gadget utilizes our patented RFID technology in an effort to cut
checkout wait times. The device is attached to each basket at the selected grocery store and is simple
to use overall. Basically, the customer places an item, which ... Show more content on

Each store could also sell their own cloth bags for those consumers who cannot provide their own.
By following this method, stores would be able to cut expenditures tremendously and it would also
be very constructive for the environment. Yet another feature of the Grocery Gadget is coupon
friendly options, meaning that once the cashier scans the barcode on the particular device all instore
coupons are applied. Consumers would still be able to use other coupons from outside sources if
they choose to do so and it will not affect the instore coupons already applied to their purchase. This
would be very beneficial and convenient for those customers who are tired of clipping coupons and
are still looking to save money on instore products. The Grocery Gadget is also self–service
checkout accessible for those stores that offer this option. The product works exactly the same as it
would in typical use, only now the customer takes the role of the cashier and scans the barcode on
their Grocery Gadget. After scanning the barcode, in–store coupons are applied. Once the coupons
are applied, customers will be given the opportunity to scan their out of store coupons and it will
apply to their total purchase price. Finally, the customer will choose their selected payment type and
the process will be completed. It is understandable that many grocery

If they succeed, other companies will probably go the online rout as well. This temporary
competitive advantage will contribute to above–normal profits for Grocery Checkout, until other
grocery supermarkets nullify the advantage. Inimitable– The online business model that Grocery
Checkout currently has can be imitated by competitors. It has not yet been imitated because the
competitors are waiting to see if it is truly profitable. They are also waiting to see if their customers
will prefer the online rout instead of the traditional grocery–shopping trip at one of their

high cost, property rights, time and casual ambiguity are not there. The competitors are just giving
this specific market time to see if it is in their best interest to imitate this online business model.
Non–substitutability– The Grocery Checkout business model cannot be substituted using a different
combination of resources or capabilities. Buying groceries online and then having them delivered to

Electronic Product Code ( Upc )
Currently, almost everything that customers buy from shopping centers has a Universal Product
Code (UPC) printed on it. RFID tags are improved version of the UPC bar code as they have read
and write capabilities, indicating that they could be read by RFID scanners and also store
information. Each product within the shopping center will be labeled with a unique Electronic
Product Code (EPC) that will take the place of UPC bar code. Each label could contain 96 bits of
information, including names of products, the manufacturers and a 40 bit serial numbers. There is
going to be an attachable RFID reader with LED screen attached, when the products with the RFID
tags are thrown in the cart, the scan reader will automatically scan the tag and show the price on the
LED screen and calculate it, making it easier for customers to manage their budget. Then when
customers are done with their shopping, they can push the cart and go through the exit door that has
the Near Field Communication (NFC) devices embedded, which can read RFID tags and extract
information stored in them, allowing the charge to automatically go to the customer's credit card.
The scanner reader for the RFID tags is also going to replace the UPC readers at the doors near the
exit of the stores. Using a network called Object Naming service, which is a database that would
retrieve the information and then direct the information to stores' computers once it leaves the stores.

Analyzing Amazon 's Market Situation
Situational Analysis – Strengths By analyzing Amazon's market situation, there are several strengths
that encourage the opening of a drive–thru grocery store in Toronto. The built in feature of a drive–
thru will offer a less time–consuming way for customers to shop for groceries, providing more
convenience. In a contemporary society, especially in Toronto, people have a very busy lifestyle due
to today's stressful work lifestyle. From research completed in 1999, more than 25 million
Americans, almost 20.5 percent of the total workforce, reported that they worked at least 49 hours a
week, and 11 million of those said they worked more than 59 hours a week (Schabner, 2015). Today,
this condition is not improved. Therefore, Amazon's drive–thru grocery store is providing a high–
efficiency alternative, where customers can order groceries online and select a time to pick them up
that fits within their schedule. Also, customers do not need cars necessarily, they could arrive by
bicycle or by foot, which means the service meets customers' needs better, since almost everyone
could access this service. Meanwhile, compared with the traditional grocery shopping, building the
drive–thru station is an important step of automation progress (Heath, 2015). It is a way to improve
the efficiency. Furthermore, Amazon is an electronic commerce and cloud computing company, and
it is the largest Internet–based retailer in the United States (Monument Policy Group, 2015). Before

Since its arrival, it has unearthed nearly 30 new stores per year now at a grand total of 340 stores
and 5 distribution centres across NSW, Victoria and Queensland alone. Each Aldi store is estimated
to make around $10 to $15milion per year worth of sales, non–food sales accounting for around 30
percent of total sales (The Sydney Morning Herald, 2015). Aldi's success in the Australian grocery
market has been prompt by many ways such as the operational aspect, low costs of products and
management. Aldi's operational aspect allows it to make greater savings and lower costs. The stores
only stock around 700 different items at a time and 95 percent of items are of private label exclusive
to Aldi. Because of this, the quality of items can be assessed with greater accuracy meaning product
development and quality control is an easier task. Specialist such as butchers and bakers are not
employed into its workforce, instead, pre made and packed products are produced in Aldi's factories
and distribution centers. Operation hours during the week average around thirty hours less than its
competitors, only opening during the busy hours of the day. Aldi does not require staff to restock
shelves because they use easy access recyclable storage boxes instead which also saves time.
Advertisement is a minor cost of Aldi compared to Woolworths, $26 million where Woolworths
spends $91 million per year (The Sydney Morning Herald, 2015). This is a huge saving

Popularity Of Chain Supermarkets Are Monopolizing The Market
1. How would you describe your knowledge of proliferation of chain supermarkets?
The rate of proliferation of chain supermarkets is very fast and the number of branches increased
rapidly.
2. Do you think chain supermarkets are monopolizing the market? If so, in what ways?
Chain supermarkets are absolutely monopolizing the market. Chain supermarkets own nearly all of
the market and many small–sized grocery stores have to wind up their business as the turnover is
insufficient for the expenditure. Other small–sized enterprises like fruit stores also suffer hard in the
sluggish competition with chain supermarkets and the income is reduced. A barrier is formed for
others to enter the retail industry and the space for small–sized enterprises to survive in the market is
very small.

the limited capital, grocery shops cannot follow suit. Thus, most consumers would tends to shop in a

Since it first began in the late 1800's, Kroger had been a store motivated to expand itsrole in the

By not needing to maintain a high profit margin on the fooditems, this has allowed the supercenters
to keep their food prices down in comparison with mosttraditional supermarkets. The recession,
which started in 2008, has helped drive the need for private–label products,or as they are more
commonly called, store brand products. These private–label productsgenerally cost the consumers
about twenty–five percent less than the major national brands thatare offered. Throughout the
supermarkets and other types of food retailers, the private–labelsales grew by more than 9% from

The Farmers Of The United States
Before I entered this class, I took local farmers for granted. I thought all the produce in our
supermarkets was from local farmers, and I thought that green markets were just another place to
buy produce. This semester has opened my eyes to the issues surrounding the food we eat. Before
the 1870's canning industry, food was not shipped across the United Sates; it was consumed locally.
Back then the local farmer's had a market; with the grit in their teeth, soiled hands and pants, and
their backs to the sun, the farmer knew that if they grew a certain amount of food they could take it
to market and sell it for a profit. Though farmers could be content, they also knew that from every

Today, when I walk into a grocery stores such as Shop Rite or Path Mart, the whole store smells like
a factory. I noticed what Joan Gussow was talking about when she illustrated that we need to make
it a trend to pay attention to where our food comes from. When I saw products in the super market
that were from the Dominican Republic, I thought to myself, these Dominicans work really hard to
ship us all these tasty fruits. The life of a farmer must pay well. Most people picture the average
Dominican worker on the farm, working the land, and having a cup of coffee while the are watching
their little babies run around. The reality of the situation is that Dominican workers are only paid a
few dollars a day; their country is starving because they are exporting their resources to other
countries, instead of consuming it themselves. Now my eyes are open to how much the food supply
has not changed since Gussow wrote, "A modest proposal", in 1985. On a positive note, intellectual
city dwellers are getting organized and advocating to protect the local farmer by educating the
average consumer to keep these farmers in mind before he/she makes their purchase at the grocery

local farmer's do not retire, which in today's economy does not make sense. There are

Environmental forces can have just as big of an impact on any industry as internal forces. It is
imperative that the management of a companies both big and small pay attention to environmental
forces. The reason being is that unlike internal forces, companies have little to no control over
environmental forces. External forces are outside factors or influences that can affect the growth,
operation, or survival of a corporation. To have a better understanding of external forces, one can
refer to Porter's Five Forces. Porter's Five Forces are perfect examples of environmental forces that
can affect the growth, operation, or survival of a corporation. Porter's Five Forces identifies
competition in the industry, power of customers, power of suppliers, threat of substitute products,
and potential of new entrants into the industry as five external forces that shapes every industry.
(Investopedia) In this assignment I will explain how competition is impacting Walmart's market
share in the US food retail industry. The United States has one of the most diverse food retail
industry with several major chains competing for a share. Over the years, Walmart has risen to the
forefront of the US food retail industry while knocking off competitors such as Kroger, Albertsons,
and Costco. By the end of 2016, Walmart and Sam's Club held a commanding 21.4% of the US food
retail market share with Kroger coming in second place with 10.2%. (Produce Retailer) Although

ustralian groceries market was very fragmented during the 19th century and was typically solely
operated, region specific and served a very small community. Improvements came about in the 20th
century with the development of supermarkets which provided one stop shop for its customers
(Deloitte, 2012). The supermarket and grocery sector is a major contributor to the retail turnover of
Australia, (Alexander) with revenues in excess of A $ 80 Billion in 2013–2014 contributing to a
little over 7% of the economy while the grocery industry alone contributes approximate 20% of that
of the supermarket and the grocery sector. The industry also employs well over 280,000 people
(Tonkin, 2014).

5 Force Analyses
Internal Rivalry
There is intense rivalry among grocery stores In Australia. As more stores open up regularly, rivalry
determinants has taken in the form of price competition which is undoubtedly the primary form of
competition in this industry where stores are undercutting each other with perks like promotions,
points collecting system and the most commonly seen is by giving generous discounts to consumers
with membership or reward cards.
Stores are also competing in other forms in order to secure loyal customers. Some of the forms are
product range and quality by which stores are offering privately–labeled products that are primarily
used in the commodity lines at lower prices.(Australian Government, Department of Agriculture)
This has caused a significant shift in the industry, thus allowing players like ALDI who started with
a private labeled product early on to gain and improve its market share. Another major form is
convenience where several non–price factors such as opening hours, strategic locations, parking
area, distribution options (delivery or in–store pickup) and online shopping comes into play.
(Australian Government, Department of Agriculture)
An example is when a consumer decides to visit a store; some of the factors a consumer might be
looking for are the store's opening hours, car park and most importantly its location. Taking
Melbourne's CBD area into consideration, we can notice that there are

  • 1. Essay on Intel H.E BUTT GROCERY COMPANY The New Digital Strategy ; A Leader in ECR Implementation SITUATIONAL STATEMENT In the year 2000, the internet was emerging as a new distribution channel that would transform the grocery industry by providing a powerful communications network for the direct sale of groceries to the consumer. The internet was also a promising tool for the way that business to business transactions would take place. There were new opportunities to gain efficiencies in the supply chain and in the distribution channels. Given that the grocery industry is extremely competitive, Fully Clingman the president and CEO of H.E.B. Grocery Company are placing renewed emphasis on technology and new systems to gain greater market share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On top of this H.E.B needs to focus on adapting products and services to changing customer habits. They are setting targets for 2001 and these are, basket analysis at the customer level, CSO in 70% if not all stores, SBP for all first–tier and second–tier suppliers, provide scanner data to suppliers, moving 50% cube volume to cross docking, add electronic tagging, increase SKU count by 40%, DSD suppliers moving to cross–docking. The question now is where do we go from here? S.W.O.T ANALYSIS STRENGTHS (A) The New Digital Strategy In 1999 HEB is currently ranked 14th among the leading grocery retailers in Texas with 240 stores and $6.5 billion in sales. With the grocery business becoming more streamlined and extremely competitive HEB will have to constantly get getter and more efficient in their supply and most importantly their distribution channels, to further reduce costs. Realizing this, HEB is very strong at implementing and seeking new technologies to help them with inventory, suppliers, stocking, distribution, customer relations and scanning. They have gained and will continue to gain strength in the future through injecting new efficiencies in the supply and distribution chains. They created (SRS) store replenishment systems to trigger supplies and (POS) point of sales data to further understand their distribution process. • 4. The Porter Five forces analysis is as follows: Threat of New Entrants: The market is packed with many players. Previously Sainsbury and Tesco has been the dominating force in the UK grocery retail market. There are no real barriers that can thwart the entrance of a new player in the market. The most important aspect is the attainment of the economies of scale for the retailers. This is facilitated by the different types of suppliers in the market. However, the entrant must have sufficient knowledge to operate profitably in the UK market. Bargaining Power of suppliers: The bargaining power of suppliers is well built in the UK grocery market. This is accentuated by the fact that big retailers can offer more competitive prices to suppliers which may pose problem for smaller retailers. This has an instant impact on the profit of the retailers and Aldi uses it to its advantage by offering competitive deals to minimize the competition. Bargaining power of customers: The bargaining power of customers is very high; it could be construed that the consumers dictate the grocery market and the loyalty effect is very difficult to achieve. This particular aspect also has a strategic perspective; therefore as products become standardized the switching cost for the customers is pretty low. It is for this reason, many retailers have strategically retorted to expansion in other businesses. However, in order to remain competitive, Aldi will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese VS generic brand Justin Damato 4/23/14 Micro Econ Writing Project Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Vs. Generic Brand Everyone has his or her own personal preference towards buying generic or name brand products. When shopping in a grocery store does the type of pasta really matter to you? How about the type of macaroni and cheese you reach for? Same ingredients, same directions on how to mix and stir up the final manufactured goods but is it really the "same". To a lot of people it might not make a difference, but like me, a lot of people prefer spending the extra 50 cents on a box of "Kraft Macaroni and Cheese" and it's worth every penny. Is it the taste that you are paying for? Or maybe it's the quality of the product that you're basing it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Kraft Company has been around for a long time now. Personally I believe you must have a protective firm, not allowing other companies to steal your ideas and product. This will give the firm advantage over others. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese is dominating the market with almost 1 million boxes sold a day. They have to keep up their revenue by attracting a new fan base. Shapes and designs of pasta are surprisingly essential for Kraft. Over 2000 patents of shaped macaroni and cheese have been officially signed for and used, only about 280 have been obtained by Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. One of their biggest selling characters and patents is SpongeBob Square Pants, a TV show that has been on air for about 12 years now. Kids thrive for the little macaroni shapes of SpongeBob, Sandy, Patrick, and Mr. Crabs. When Kraft came out with these shapes they couldn't produce enough of them for mom's and their kids. Sales rocketed through the roof and Kraft Macaroni and Cheese monopolized the competition with this brand new shape that no one else could use. Knowing exactly what to market at a specific time is huge when it comes to any company that wants to be successful. This is what sets them apart from the rest and has given them that extra economic profit. Macaroni shapes are not the only ingredients that set them apart from the rest. Have you ever ... • 8. Analysis Of The Supervalu Board Of Directors First Recommendation Based on our analysis of both the internal and external aspects of SuperValu, one of our recommendation for the SuperValu board of directors is to sell off the grocery retail business unit. SuperValu does not have the internal resources to continue competing in this highly competitive industry. The company is also not able to strategically place itself in the market compared to competitors because they are not a low cost leader, nor do they have a premium product. Walmart and Aldi will continue to take revenues from Cub and other SuperValu owned grocers in the future, while Whole Foods and other specialty stores will continue to offer better products that match external trends. In addition to the growing competition, SuperValu's financial performance has been below or stagnant relative to their competitors and the industry overall. The company revealed that about half its revenues and one–third its earnings come from the distribution business, which continues to grow and currently services about 2,500 independent retailers from 19 distribution centers. During that same quarter, same–store sales at its supermarket locations dropped about 4.5 percent, with even Save–A–Lot outlets registering 4.1 percent decreases in same–store sales. Acquisition Fortunately for SuperValu, Roundy's, a once scalable competitor in the grocery retail industry, was acquired by Kroger in November 2015. This leaves SuperValu with a plethora of information on funds received, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The name of the store owner I interviewed was Mr. Paul J. Dial, owner of the Food Depot located in my town of Stockbridge, Ga. In a 20 minute interview I asked him questions pertaining to the process his company uses that are critical to the effectiveness, profitability, and flow of products bought from his store. Store Owner Mr. Paul J. Dial is the manager of Food Depot, located in Stockbridge, Ga. He is a 60 years old man married for 40 years and resides currently in Riverside, Georgia. Kroger Kroger Cody Butler, Ahmad Damra, & Doug Edwards Sullivan University Kroger Since it first began in the late 1800's, Kroger had been a store motivated to expand its role in the community. After first starting out by selling grocery items to customers, it began to also sell bakery items and opened bakeries within the grocery store itself. This was a big convenience for the consumer to be able to shop for most of their grocery items within the same store. The company then set its sights on the meat industry by purchasing several meat markets and packing plants. The Transportation And Grocery Gaps Of San Diego Listening to Sierra's answer, this customer's plight embodies the interconnectivity of the transportation and grocery gaps that San Diego suffers from within areas in need. Though luckier than most to have his own means of private transportation, this one particular customer was compelled to drive a great distance to provide healthy juice for himself, a product that he would otherwise be unexposed to without his car. As Gottlieb and Joshi highlight in their book Food Justice, the link between the two aforementioned gaps grow wider and wider, feeding off each other and intensifying the imbalances already existing (48). • 56. Analyzing Amazon 's Market Situation Situational Analysis – Strengths By analyzing Amazon's market situation, there are several strengths that encourage the opening of a drive–thru grocery store in Toronto. The built in feature of a drive– thru will offer a less time–consuming way for customers to shop for groceries, providing more convenience. In a contemporary society, especially in Toronto, people have a very busy lifestyle due to today's stressful work lifestyle. From research completed in 1999, more than 25 million Americans, almost 20.5 percent of the total workforce, reported that they worked at least 49 hours a week, and 11 million of those said they worked more than 59 hours a week (Schabner, 2015). Today, this condition is not improved. Therefore, Amazon's drive–thru grocery store is providing a high– efficiency alternative, where customers can order groceries online and select a time to pick them up that fits within their schedule. Also, customers do not need cars necessarily, they could arrive by bicycle or by foot, which means the service meets customers' needs better, since almost everyone could access this service. Meanwhile, compared with the traditional grocery shopping, building the drive–thru station is an important step of automation progress (Heath, 2015). It is a way to improve the efficiency. Furthermore, Amazon is an electronic commerce and cloud computing company, and it is the largest Internet–based retailer in the United States (Monument Policy Group, 2015). Before going into the ... Since its arrival, it has unearthed nearly 30 new stores per year now at a grand total of 340 stores and 5 distribution centres across NSW, Victoria and Queensland alone. Each Aldi store is estimated to make around $10 to $15milion per year worth of sales, non–food sales accounting for around 30 percent of total sales (The Sydney Morning Herald, 2015). Aldi's success in the Australian grocery market has been prompt by many ways such as the operational aspect, low costs of products and management. Aldi's operational aspect allows it to make greater savings and lower costs. The stores only stock around 700 different items at a time and 95 percent of items are of private label exclusive to Aldi. Because of this, the quality of items can be assessed with greater accuracy meaning product development and quality control is an easier task. Specialist such as butchers and bakers are not employed into its workforce, instead, pre made and packed products are produced in Aldi's factories and distribution centers. Operation hours during the week average around thirty hours less than its competitors, only opening during the busy hours of the day. Aldi does not require staff to restock shelves because they use easy access recyclable storage boxes instead which also saves time. Advertisement is a minor cost of Aldi compared to Woolworths, $26 million where Woolworths spends $91 million per year (The Sydney Morning Herald, 2015). This is a huge saving ... The rate of proliferation of chain supermarkets is very fast and the number of branches increased rapidly. 2. Do you think chain supermarkets are monopolizing the market? If so, in what ways? Chain supermarkets are absolutely monopolizing the market. Chain supermarkets own nearly all of the market and many small–sized grocery stores have to wind up their business as the turnover is insufficient for the expenditure. Other small–sized enterprises like fruit stores also suffer hard in the sluggish competition with chain supermarkets and the income is reduced. I thought all the produce in our supermarkets was from local farmers, and I thought that green markets were just another place to buy produce. This semester has opened my eyes to the issues surrounding the food we eat. Before the 1870's canning industry, food was not shipped across the United Sates; it was consumed locally. Back then the local farmer's had a market; with the grit in their teeth, soiled hands and pants, and their backs to the sun, the farmer knew that if they grew a certain amount of food they could take it to market and sell it for a profit. Today, when I walk into a grocery stores such as Shop Rite or Path Mart, the whole store smells like a factory. I noticed what Joan Gussow was talking about when she illustrated that we need to make it a trend to pay attention to where our food comes from. When I saw products in the super market that were from the Dominican Republic, I thought to myself, these Dominicans work really hard to ship us all these tasty fruits. The life of a farmer must pay well. Most people picture the average Dominican worker on the farm, working the land, and having a cup of coffee while the are watching their little babies run around. The reality of the situation is that Dominican workers are only paid a few dollars a day; their country is starving because they are exporting their resources to other countries, instead of consuming it themselves. Now my eyes are open to how much the food supply has not changed since Gussow wrote, "A modest proposal", in 1985. On a positive note, intellectual city dwellers are getting organized and advocating to protect the local farmer by educating the average consumer to keep these farmers in mind before he/she makes their purchase at the grocery store In this class, I learned a dirty little secret that most people do not know. I learned that small local farmer's do not retire, which in today's economy does not make sense. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is imperative that the management of a companies both big and small pay attention to environmental forces. The reason being is that unlike internal forces, companies have little to no control over environmental forces. External forces are outside factors or influences that can affect the growth, operation, or survival of a corporation. To have a better understanding of external forces, one can refer to Porter's Five Forces.
