Summary Of ' Summer Reading Packet '
Kassidy Neely Ms. Moya English Language Arts 1–2 Honors July 31, 2014 Summer Reading
Packet 1) Scout admires Miss Maudie for her kindness, honesty and patient understanding of her,
Jem and Dill. She sees the brighter side of things like when her house burned down, she said how
she had always wanted to downsize; and how there was more room for her azaleas now that her
garden was gone. She was only worried about her neighbors during this whole incident. 2) Atticus
accepted the job to defend Tom Robinson because he supports equality more than anyone in the
town of Maycomb. 3) The kids at school make fun of Scout and Jem because of her dad defending
Tom Robinson and her dad being all for equality. 4) Aunt Alexandra disapproves of Scout because
she believes that she isn't ladylike enough. 5) Uncle Jack realizes later that he should always hear
both sides of a story before he jumps to conclusions and issues punishments. 6) Calpurnia scolds
scout for questioning Walter's eating habits. 7) Miss Caroline tells Scout to stop reading with her
father. 8) Miss Maudie's house catches on fire. 9) Jem's pants were folded and all of the wholes in
them were sewn up. 10) Atticus can shoot, which shocks the kids. 11) The concluding sentence of
chapter says, "but I never figured out how Atticus knew I was listening, and it was not until many
years later that I realized that he wanted me to hear every word he said." Uncle Jack and Atticus

Summer Reading Research Paper
To be honest, summer reading is a pain and reading not usually the most fun thing to do to me.
Reading a boring book and then doing a big assignment about the book. But it is required to enter
the grade and will have to do it. But this book was different from the other books that are usually
required to read from. This is the part where you laugh is by far the most entertaining and interesting
book I've read before. Not only did this book peak my interest by a good amount of the book is
about basketball but just journey that Travis went on during that summer was amazing to read. This
book is valuable for freshmen to learn about the important concept of the human condition because
sadness, anger, love are all characteristic traits, feelings, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pain is an inevitable feeling that hurts humans greatly. There are many different types of pain such
as mental, physical, and emotional pain. The most known type out of these pain is physical pain.
Although it is one of the worst types of feelings, it is a very human feeling that is composed of the
human condition. Pain comes in often in the book. Travis was hanging out with Natalie and was
jumping off bridges for fun. One of the times he jumped, he hit the water completely flat on his left
side, hitting cement in the process. He cracked four of his ribs and bruised the entire left side of his
body. The next example pain involves Travis but he is not the one in pain, he actually inflicts it.
While he is in his basketball game, his opponent inflicts taunts and trash talked him during the entire
game. Travis realized he had enough of the trash talking so he decided to punch his opponent in the
face. He punched him in the face so heard that the guy had to be hospitalized. This next example is
pretty harsh. While playing pickup basketball with Travis, Creature was doing really well and
started to trash talk his opponent during the game. His opponent was a gang member and he had a
pocket knife on him. So, the gang member had enough and mid–way through the game, he stabbed
Creature three times, leaving him in near death. Creature would eventually die from the

How do I know what text to discuss and what to comment on? Choose passages that speak to you.
Consider the parts of the book that made you stop and reflect on what was read. Consider what you
may highlight or annotate. Consider the text that may lead to thematic, character, or literary
convention analysis. Make connections to the text (text–text, text–self, and text–world). Analyze the
style of the text–reflect on elements like symbols, imagery, metaphors, point of view, etc. Apply the
different literary critical approaches with which you are familiar. How many entries should I have?
Look to see how many journal entries are required for your grade level on the page where your book
is listed. Journal entry requirements are per book. You are all reading different books, of different

To follow a life of success, happiness, and fulfillment will always begin by observing ourselves,
from finding inner peace, figuring out your purpose, and pursuing it through hard work with the
passion to commit in to our goal that will shape up our life. Without persistence and hard work it is
impossible to succeed. A life without direction could lead to a path of uncertainty and without
contentment. Also a life without inner peace is a life without true happiness. To follow a life of

Have you ever felt that as you become developed and enlightened as your life progress you still felt
that something is missing? As for what Guy Montag felt from Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451,
having a complete life and a honorable profession as a fireman (burns books), he felt that there is
something missing in his life, it is the books that his society wanted to be burned out, he finally
found his true purpose, it is to memorize the books he have read to rewrite it in to their future for the
good of humanity along with other book people. Learning that we must have a purpose that we need
to realize it and achieve it. Our true purpose is to follow what we want to do, not to try to fit in
other's mask but to only wear our own; it is to find out our own dream and goals to start our own
journey towards success, happiness, and fulfillment in life. Once we figure out what we really want
to do, we find ourselves to feel that we are going to the right direction and know that once we get to
our destination we will be satisfied in life with clarity. To be contented in life we must discover what
we really desired to do, it is also essential to find our happiness. Living the life today has always
been difficult as for waking up early in the morning to go to work or school, arguments with a
stranger or sibling, or just personal concerns. Having this

Sophocles also shows nobility in Oedipus, how he continued to pursue the truth to help his people
even though it caused him suffering.
Instructions:
Summarize the story of Oedipus and the Sphinx.
The city of Thebes was under threat by the Sphinx, a winged lion with the face of a human. The
sphinx would only leave the city alone if someone could solve her riddle. If the riddle was answered
incorrectly, then the guesser would be killed. The riddle was "What is it that walks on four feet,
three feet and two feet... and is most feeble when it walks on four?" Oedipus correctly answered the
riddle with "man" and the Sphinx threw herself to death on the rocks and due to death of Laius and
other circumstances Oedipus became the new king of Thebes.
SECTION 3:
Dramatic Plot: In ten sentences, summarize the drama's basic plot.
1. Oedipus arrives in Thebes and unknowingly kills the king and his father (Laius).

Value Summer Reading
The value of Summer Reading: Once upon a time, when there was no internet, smartphones or any
wireless devices we had books. My library card is still one of my fondest childhood summertime
memories. I was so lucky to have a librarian aunt who literally fostered the love of reading not just
in me but in all my cousins. I'd go to her library all summer long to get books, any type and any
genre of books. Summer was the only time that I was allowed to stay up late most of the nights to
devour my books. However, children today would rather to play computer games, watch TV or
spend their time online. But how can we make sure kids choose a book over a screen when they're
looking for fun? The key word is choice. According to a new research by

Summer Reading : My Experience Of Reading In High School
The SNAP of a tree trunk splitting in half and falling is the sound that pierced my ears that dreaded
afternoon. In reality, a tree trunk did not split but rather my knee dislocated tearing apart cartilage
and ligaments. July 19th of 2013 marked the day I would become immobilized for a tedious and
monotonous three months. The surgery went smoothly but left me stranded in a full leg brace and to
the clutches of the black recliner in my living room where I resided for most of my recovery. Here in
this chair, I faced down one of the biggest challenges all high school freshman face, summer
reading. I was left at the hands of The Hot Zone for Biology, The Chosen for History Class, and The
Iliad for my English class. Somehow a scientific thriller, an autobiography, and a historic tale would
not only all be read that summer, but also they would alter my perception of books and the
knowledge they contained. The first book my hand grabbed was The Hot Zone. The book is written
by Richard Preston and is a narrative about the discovery of and first encounters with the HIV virus
and Ebola. I thought to myself, "What science class has summer reading? This is going to be
painful." At this time in my life, reading was a chore that teachers assigned and never really served a
purpose. My injury actually made summer reading quite simple. I couldn't go play outside, go out
with my friends, or waste my evening biking. Books and TV were all I had to keep my brain from
dying of boredom. The

Divergent: Summer Reading Questions
Divergent – Summer Reading Questions
1. The purpose of the five fractions is to keep peace within their society. Dauntless, Candor, Amity,
and Erudite are all examples of these factions. I think these personality types fulfill at the basic
needs of people.
2. The reasoning behind the creation of the factions was to create peace and order within the society.
I believe that the factions are "working toward a better world" as they say they are. For Tris's
society, the factions have held together structure in her community. In Tris's society the fact that they
don't have a lot of choices is not really bettering their society. Another thing that isn't working in
their society is that divergent's have to hide.
3. I would have been born into Candor because my family values honesty is over all. I would have
chosen Dauntless because I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think the braver faction is Dauntless because they jump off buildings and trains and I would not
want to live to the Candor because of the truth serum.
9.Tris must make the team or end up factionless. It's a competition, and she is inherently
competitive. Jealousy is a common reaction, although I do not consider it a right, I consider it a
reason to work harder. Tris should ignore their reactions for no other reason than their reactions do
not affect her own goals.
10. During initiation, Tris proves to herself that she belongs. She made friends, and instead of
retreating within herself.... looked outside of herself. She made the right choice because it stimulated
her to be better, had she chosen a different faction she might never have reached her true potential.
11. To be fearless is to have no fear. When you control your fears you are able to do anything When
Tris says "half of bravery is perspective" she's saying the way some people choose to be brave is
how they view a current situation.
12. Four's desire to be brave, selfless, smart, kind, and honest is unrealistic because they are all
expected to be a certain way to "keep

How to Encourage Your Students to Read over the summer
Encouraging your students to read this summer may not be an easy task to do, since there are plenty
of other enjoyable summer activities to do than reading. However, you and your students worked
very hard all over the school year to build a better quality of learning. So, rather than just putting
their books on the side, the most efficient way to make a summer reading a successful and reality is
to make it entertaining.
What are those Reading strategies should be used to encourage your students?
Listed below are the strategies that you can try to let your students become motivated to read this

adhere community reading programs. Struggling readers can remain defiant to reading when they do
not totally have to, On the other hand, the best time to establish them to audio books or audio visual

This is the best prompter to keep them reading in a way that can help those kids that are shy to
remain social even outside of the school. As much as possible, motivate them to meet up over the
summer to talk regard to the books on their priority lists. For the older students, have them to put
mutually a reading calendar and organize their own book club assemblies. While for the younger
students, you can send home contact information regards to various members of the group, so that

My Summer Reading Influenced My Life
A typical summer day in the life of a six–year old girl would consist of many common fun activities
such as coloring, watching the latest television shows on Disney Channel, and playing with Barbies.
However, when I was six years old my summer did not include any of those activities. Rather, my
day included summer reading lists, books, and even more books. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy any of
the fun activities most six–year old girls did at my age, but I was much more fascinated with
learning. Through reading I enjoyed learning new words, phrases, and ideas. For example, I would
loved reading books by Dr. Seuss because of the words and phrases that rhymed together. I learned
how a word could rhyme together by having the same similar sound ... Show more content on

By the influence of my mother, I was introduced to an environment such as the public library, where
all I was surrounded by were books. A part of the reason why my mother encouraged me so much to
read is because her parents also pushed her to read too. She states, "My parents motivated me to
learn how to read and write in English because as immigrants they couldn't speak or write in the
language." She also states, "They encouraged all of my siblings and me to learn English so we could
continue expanding our knowledge and education." I believe that because of my mother's
encouragement to read at a young age has allowed me to develop a strong connection with reading.
For example, throughout high school my goal was to receive good grades all four years so I could
attend a four–year university. I spent the majority of my time doing homework, studying for exams,
and preparing for my classes, all of which require a form of reading. I enjoyed high school because
of how fast and how in depth my teachers would go into each lesson. Luckily, I was able to
accomplish my goal by ending with a 3.8 GPA and qualifying for acceptance into various

rights as men such as the right of education. From that moment, she knew that she would fight for
peace and democracy for the Pakistan women in her future.

Book Thief Summer Reading
The Book Thief Summer Reading Essay Over the summer of 2014 I read The Book Thief, a novel
by Markus Zusak. Prior to reading this book I honestly thought it was just going to be another
stereotypical WWII story that just revolves around a hidden Jew and the bland home life of a
nervous German family. I was proven wrong by the time I read the first chapter. The Book Thief
turned out to be so much more than I imagined it would be. The characters weren't the typical stock
characters I had predicted. They had their own personal struggles and lives outside of hiding a Jew.
Everything in the book had a story behind it, whether it be Max's accordion or how Liesel came to
live with a new family. There were almost no dull moments and I was able to ... Show more content

From day one, " Rudy was always determined to be Liesel's best friend."(Zusak 48) and that was
how it was with Georgie and I. Zusak says " A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to
a lasting friendship."(Zusak 48) My friendship with my neighbor also had a "snowball to the face"
start. Shortly after moving into his neighborhood, I was walking my dog Chloe but got distracted
and dropped the leash, and Chloe took off after a squirrel in Georgie's yard. I was too busy trying to
chase her down to watch where I was going and ended up running smack into Georgie who was
getting the newspaper from the end of his driveway. We began talking and everything went from
there. Both boys also did their share of eccentric acts, like Rudy's Jesse Owens incident where he
covered himself in charcoal and ran around the town's track, pretending to be the famous olympic
sprinter, Jesse Owens. Coming home one day and finding Georgie and my little sister dressed as
wizards pushing each other up and down the street in a wheelbarrow certainly competes with the
peculiar acts of Rudy Steiner.

Why Summer Reading Is Important
Summer Reading Paper Lindsey Willingham Over the summer I read the book the crossover and the
book I am Number Four. I think students should be required to read over the summer for the
following reasons. First, most kids do not get engaged in educational activities over the summer,
which leads to learning loss, and reading over the summer can help that. Next, kids can learn a lot
from reading and can learn many new words, and gain knowledge. It also helps improve focus and
concentration. Reading is important all the time, but especially over the summer when you're not
focused on educational activities. When I first knew we had to do summer reading I thought it was
dumb and there was no point. Now that I think about it, there definitely was a point; I was not
involved in many educational activities over the summer except for summer reading." Research
shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than
they do on the same tests at the end of the school year." If students are not getting involved in

there were new words and their definition throughout the book. I learned so many new words like,
patellar tendinitis which is also known as jumpers' knee, an injury to the tendon connecting your
kneecap (patella) to your shinbone. Joseph Addison said "reading is to the mind what exercise is to
the body," I think that quote is very true; we need to read in order to keep our minds going. If we
don't read during the summer, our vocabulary could shrink, and it is more likely kids will struggle at

Summer Reading Analysis
As I reflect on my summer reading of the book "The Lord of the Flies", I am able to recall a few
habits that I experienced. Some were more evident than others to say the least. You see, before I
begin reading a book I make predictions on what the book is going to be about by looking at the title
and the cover page. In addition, it's important for me to find a quiet place before I begin reading.
Furthermore, before I start my reading it is important for me to set goals, so I can accomplish as
much of the reading I'm required to complete. Most importantly, I must be able to not only complete
the reading assignment, but also have a good comprehension of its context. Moreover, I've realized
that during my reading there are other habits that I use, which is to make sure I understand the

The last habit I do while reading is; I take each word written as its full value, and then I translate its

comprehension of what the writer of the book is trying to express. When I finish reading a book, I
reflect on the author's message and internalize how it made me feel. The reason I have this habit, is,
so that I can learn and become knowledgeable in the material I've read. Upon my completion of the
summer reading book and essay, I was impressed with my results. The reason I say this is due to
how well I understood the context of the author, and how accurate the examples supported its

freshmen, upperclassmen and the school. A Particular Student at UNC who was effected by this
issue was Amir Thomas. He was a student orientation leader. As an orientation leader he was able to
experience, thee precautions that the university put in place to help the students who felt
uncomfortable with the assignment. Amir said that "they gave us specific discussion points that we
could use in case we encountered student who were resistant, to try to encourage them to be more
open to the book." He also said in his experience over the summer during orientation, ... Show more

The program is set up to make you open your mind to new ideas, because it is required in the
college atmosphere. If Converse College required their incoming freshmen class to read
"Approaching the Qur'an", it could create some discomfort within the student body because, there is
an astigmatism with Islam particularity in southern states, which is where most Converse students
originated. But I do not believe that Converse students would refuse to read their assigned book,
because they know that Converse values acceptance of any religion, race, and sexuality. But if this
issue did arise, I believe the Board of Converse College would take a similar approach to the issue
like UNC, by making the assignment optional to students. But still requiring student to participate in
their group discussion. The option would be up to the students.
In this case study, lots of questions were left unanswered. Such as were the discussion sessions still
held?, When FNP appealed the case were they successful?, and did this confrontation change the
way UNC approach the book selection for their Summer Reading program in years to come?. I wish
this case study included the answers to these questions. However, this case study did illustrate how a
prejudice toward a religion can effect even the educational

Summer Reading Research Paper
This summer I had a summer reading problem. I had a list of books that I got before school ended,
that I had to choose a book from to read over the summer. I also had to read a book of my choice for
a total of 2 books. For the next month and a half I read my usual summer books and totally forgot
that the list even existed. One day while I was biking with my neighbor she asked me how I was
going on my summer reading project. I only had two weeks to get on of the books and read it.
Teachers say that we should read books over the summer so that when we get back to school,
teachers can get to teach the important things for the year, but is summer reading a good idea? From
a teachers point of view you should read over the summer to improve or maintain your reading
level. If you don't read over the summer you could experience learning loss. Lastly the list can
encourage you to read different genres of books. This can give variety I what you read so that you
don't keep on reading the same kinds of books, but is a list of books the right way to go? ... Show

It's like a teacher noticing after 2 months of summer and relaxation that she has to go back to
making lesson plans every night and grading papers. I forgot over the summer about my summer
reading project and when I did go to get books from the library every week I forgot the list. Also if I
did know what I want from the list I couldn't find it in my library because another 1300 odd students
at my school have the same books on their summer reading list. Lastly, most of the books on the list

The Summer Reading Assignment Mindset
When I first read the email about the summer reading assignment Mindset, my expectations about
what the book would be about completely differed from what it actually was. My thoughts were that
it would only pertain to school and how to stay positive while going through college. After just five
pages, I realized this books usefulness would stay with me for my entire life. When introduced to the
fixed and growth based mindsets, I felt as though the growth based mindset defined my academic
career that allowed me to get into college, while the fixed mindset sadly resonates in my social life.
Around the end of the first chapter, Dweck brings up four questions that pertain to how easily
intelligence can be changed or if it is fixed your entire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I thought of myself as high and almost almighty when compared to other students that actually had
to study to be successful. In my own eyes, back three years ago, I thought that you could only be
successful from intelligence you were born with. This superior way thinking changed suddenly
when test grades started to plummet due to my lack of studying. I had just started getting
information from schools along with grade point average and standardized testing requirements.
Seeing that D– for the semester made my failure into an example of what not devolve back into.
Dweck aced this chapter, as it was almost an exact timeline of this class. I realized that studying and
putting effort into my work did not make me a lower person then those around me. When I realized
this, the grades in all of my classes began to rise and so did my confidence for my future in school
after high school. Previous to the events that occurred in the Advanced Placement class junior year,
my mindset in school was fixed to the millionth degree. The reasoning for this was my placement
into the gifted program in elementary school that inflated my ignorance and arrogance. The gifted
instructors would praise the gifted student to no end, making us strive for nothing greater, as we
thought that we had already achieved as high as possible. This positive praise clouded my thinking

Short-Term Summer Reading
Claim: Short–term summer reading programs improve the retention and development of reading
skills.
Study of summer intervention in which a short amount of instructional time was spent with at risk
for school and reading failure.
Show improvement over the control group even though the amount of intervention was significantly
less than other students
Evidence:
One–hundred and twenty–five children who had completed grades 1–3 and were at–risk for school
and reading failure were randomly sub–divided into three groups to test the effectiveness a three–
week summer reading program on retention and improvement in reading skills.
Children in all groups were given the Gates–McGinitie Reading Test: a commercially available,
standardized, group administered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reasoning:
Consistent reading remediation in the first three years of school helps children to maintain and/or
improve their reading skills.
Of importance, this study showed that even a few hours of reading intervention goes a long way in
helping at–risk children with retaining and improving their reading skills.
Conclusions:
This study shows that summer reading programs benefit children from low–income families whose
parents may not be motivated or able to bring them every day for an entire summer reading program
and the children themselves may not be motivated or even willing to attend an intensive and lengthy
summer reading program.
This may be beneficial to the United Way and its stakeholders as they may not have the level of
funding and support needed to carry out an extensive and extended summer reading program with a
nutritional component; to pay salaries and benefits for teachers involved in the summer reading
program and to campaign and obtain as many volunteers needed to successfully carry out this
program on a yearly

The Role Of Immigrants In A Summers Reading
From the information we can understand that in the beginning of the 20th century large numbers of
immigrants came to New York City searching for more desirable life for themselves and their future
generations, the American middle – class dream. In addition, these people believed that if they work
hard and have faith in themselves, they will be able to achieve a great life full of satisfaction.
This idea is clearly reflected in "A Summers Reading, the story is set in a poor immigrant
neighborhood in New York City. We know the characters are immigrants from their names.

Divergent: Summer Reading Project
I chose the book Divergent for my 2016 Summer Reading Project because I enjoyed the book when
I read it. Divergent tells a story about Beatrice (AKA Tris). She lives in a dystopian city where
everyone is divided into five factions. The factions are: Erudite (The Knowledgeable), Amity (The
Peaceful), Candor (The Truthful), Abnegation (The Selfless), and Dauntless (The Brave). Tris
doesn't fit into any of these five categories and she would rather kill herself than become one of the
Factionless (the people who didn't succeed in their faction initiation and are basically homeless).
She is told that she is Divergent, a person who cannot be controlled by any one group and therefore
feared by everyone. I enjoyed this book because it tells me what life could be like in the future and
how human beings could mess up the world. I wouldn't fit into any one faction and I don't think
anyone in the world would. "I am fed up with tears and weakness" (Roth 117). This is a quote from
the book that I think I can relate to because I've been bullied before and I kept feeling weak and
sorry for myself until one day I realised that I was only weak ... Show more content on

It tells me that we need to start taking better care of our home otherwise it will end up as a
wasteland like in Divergent. If that were to happen, the world would go into chaos. I don't get the
motto "Faction before blood" (Roth 43) because I personally think that blood always comes first, no
matter what. This reminds me of the book Fahrenheit 451. In the book, nobody ever cares about
anything. They do the same thing every day and nothing ever changes. In Divergent, people in
Dauntless are not scared, and are ready to fight, whereas in Amity, nobody would ever fight. Today,
these seem impossible, since everyone is scared of something and everybody gets into a fight at
least once in their life. But in Divergent all of those things are possible, since everyone is genetically

Students in AP Language and Composition (AP3) are required to arrive to the first day of school
having completed the "Summer Reading Assignment." Students are to read Nickel and Dimed by
Barbara Ehrenreich and the essays listed below. Then, complete the corresponding assignment
(explained below). The assignment is to be turned in the first day of the 2015–2016 school year

Summer Reading Reflection
Make Your Home Among Strangers Summer Reading Reflections
Reflection Questions:
1. Why does Lizet feel like a fish out of water both at Rawlings and at home in Miami?
The consequences of growing up poor in Miami and Lizet's subsequent transition into a
Northeastern liberal arts student created two facets of her personality that were unable to mesh
together. This was something that she was willing to acknowledge yet unwilling to admit was
causing problems both at home and at school. "El" was 'too Cuban' for her white classmates at
Rawlings, and "Liz" was 'too white' for her friends and family in Hialeah and Little Havana. The
mannerisms that she'd adopted from each group of people was seen as unsuitable to the other, which
frequently caused Lizet's inner monologue to feel discomforted and kept her at war with herself.
2. How does Lizet cope with the challenges of being a minority student at Rawlings?
For the first semester of her studies at Rawlings, Lizet fails to cope with the challenges properly and
finds herself isolated from her peers and failing her classes. The relatively poor work of the
administration on the diversity board and their ice cream socials left her feeling like she was without
dependable support from the college, although she consciously decided to turn a blind eye to the
academic resources available to her for the first few months. Once she finally realized how badly
she was struggling and the risk her academic career was put in, Lizet threw herself into improving
her grades but continued to allow her social life to struggle. The misunderstandings her peers had of
the more Latina aspects of herself ranging from her word choices to what temperature she
straightened her hair at created a bridge that Lizet further burned with volatile behavior.
3. What could Lizet do, if anything, to bridge the cultural and generational gaps with her mother?
In many ways, Lizet was unable to bridge any kind of gap with her mother because of their severe
lack of communication. Lizet's mom envisioned the ideal daughter as being someone like
Caridaylis, a young mother (figure) centered around her family with them being her primary
concern. The modern, elite college woman was an idea completely foreign to

I think I am, but how do I know?" At first glance this line may look like it's not too important but the
more you think about the book the more they suit it. This book is about a teenage boy who keeps
doing things that you think he's going to go through with but he doesn't. For example, at the end of
the book it appears that he's finally leaving however, he agrees to stay when his little sister insist on

should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and
just leave them alone." I didn't have many choices to pick for a most beautiful line written because
all that is written is about how phony everyone is and him being cool and edgy. I do actually like the
line though, it's a great line for people who are nostalgic considering that that's all we would like to

Summer Reading Strategies
VIII. Closing and Wrap Up
"Placing books in the hands of children to develop an interest in reading is critical. Placing targeted,
high–interest books with STEAM focus in the hands of children is brilliant." – Patrick Pope,

RIF launched a program called Read for Success. This is a summer reading program where children,
parents, teachers and members of the community come together to support a child to read during the
summer. Children who don't read over the summer risk losing up to three months of important skills
that they learned during the school year. This is especially true of children from low–income
families. Summer learning loss poses a real threat to a student's academic success and ability to

Summer Reading Essay Everything that has happened to me, every TV show I have watched, every
person that I have met, and every book I have read has molded me into the homosapien I am today.
The clothing I wear, the music I listen to, and the people I talk to is heavily influenced by
embarrassing mistakes of the past. To put it simply, I like books and movies and I used to love them.
The constant page turning and scene watching had shown me extravagant worlds that didn't exist,
but I grew to love the people that lived in them. I sometimes loved them more than the people in real
life. The connection I had felt to the fictional worlds gave me an almost pathetic sense of joy, but

  • 3. Summary Of ' Summer Reading Packet ' Kassidy Neely Ms. Moya English Language Arts 1–2 Honors July 31, 2014 Summer Reading Packet 1) Scout admires Miss Maudie for her kindness, honesty and patient understanding of her, Jem and Dill. She sees the brighter side of things like when her house burned down, she said how she had always wanted to downsize; and how there was more room for her azaleas now that her garden was gone. She was only worried about her neighbors during this whole incident. 2) Atticus accepted the job to defend Tom Robinson because he supports equality more than anyone in the town of Maycomb. 3) The kids at school make fun of Scout and Jem because of her dad defending Tom Robinson and her dad being all for equality. 4) Aunt Alexandra disapproves of Scout because she believes that she isn't ladylike enough. 5) Uncle Jack realizes later that he should always hear both sides of a story before he jumps to conclusions and issues punishments. 6) Calpurnia scolds scout for questioning Walter's eating habits. 7) Miss Caroline tells Scout to stop reading with her father. 8) Miss Maudie's house catches on fire. 9) Jem's pants were folded and all of the wholes in them were sewn up. 10) Atticus can shoot, which shocks the kids. 11) The concluding sentence of chapter says, "but I never figured out how Atticus knew I was listening, and it was not until many years later that I realized that he wanted me to hear every word he said." • 5. Summer Reading Research Paper To be honest, summer reading is a pain and reading not usually the most fun thing to do to me. Reading a boring book and then doing a big assignment about the book. But it is required to enter the grade and will have to do it. But this book was different from the other books that are usually required to read from. This is the part where you laugh is by far the most entertaining and interesting book I've read before. Not only did this book peak my interest by a good amount of the book is about basketball but just journey that Travis went on during that summer was amazing to read. This book is valuable for freshmen to learn about the important concept of the human condition because sadness, anger, love are all characteristic traits, feelings, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pain is an inevitable feeling that hurts humans greatly. There are many different types of pain such as mental, physical, and emotional pain. The most known type out of these pain is physical pain. Although it is one of the worst types of feelings, it is a very human feeling that is composed of the human condition. Pain comes in often in the book. Travis was hanging out with Natalie and was jumping off bridges for fun. One of the times he jumped, he hit the water completely flat on his left side, hitting cement in the process. He cracked four of his ribs and bruised the entire left side of his body. The next example pain involves Travis but he is not the one in pain, he actually inflicts it. While he is in his basketball game, his opponent inflicts taunts and trash talked him during the entire game. Travis realized he had enough of the trash talking so he decided to punch his opponent in the face. He punched him in the face so heard that the guy had to be hospitalized. This next example is pretty harsh. While playing pickup basketball with Travis, Creature was doing really well and started to trash talk his opponent during the game. His opponent was a gang member and he had a pocket knife on him. So, the gang member had enough and mid–way through the game, he stabbed Creature three times, leaving him in near death. Without persistence and hard work it is impossible to succeed. A life without direction could lead to a path of uncertainty and without contentment. Also a life without inner peace is a life without true happiness. As for what Guy Montag felt from Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451, having a complete life and a honorable profession as a fireman (burns books), he felt that there is something missing in his life, it is the books that his society wanted to be burned out, he finally found his true purpose, it is to memorize the books he have read to rewrite it in to their future for the good of humanity along with other book people. Learning that we must have a purpose that we need to realize it and achieve it. Our true purpose is to follow what we want to do, not to try to fit in other's mask but to only wear our own; it is to find out our own dream and goals to start our own journey towards success, happiness, and fulfillment in life. Once we figure out what we really want to do, we find ourselves to feel that we are going to the right direction and know that once we get to our destination we will be satisfied in life with clarity. To be contented in life we must discover what we really desired to do, it is also essential to find our happiness. My library card is still one of my fondest childhood summertime memories. I was so lucky to have a librarian aunt who literally fostered the love of reading not just in me but in all my cousins. I'd go to her library all summer long to get books, any type and any genre of books. Summer was the only time that I was allowed to stay up late most of the nights to devour my books. • 16. Summer Reading : My Experience Of Reading In High School The SNAP of a tree trunk splitting in half and falling is the sound that pierced my ears that dreaded afternoon. In reality, a tree trunk did not split but rather my knee dislocated tearing apart cartilage and ligaments. July 19th of 2013 marked the day I would become immobilized for a tedious and monotonous three months. The surgery went smoothly but left me stranded in a full leg brace and to the clutches of the black recliner in my living room where I resided for most of my recovery. Here in this chair, I faced down one of the biggest challenges all high school freshman face, summer reading. I was left at the hands of The Hot Zone for Biology, The Chosen for History Class, and The Iliad for my English class. Somehow a scientific thriller, an autobiography, and a historic tale would not only all be read that summer, but also they would alter my perception of books and the knowledge they contained. The first book my hand grabbed was The Hot Zone. The book is written by Richard Preston and is a narrative about the discovery of and first encounters with the HIV virus and Ebola. I thought to myself, "What science class has summer reading? This is going to be painful." At this time in my life, reading was a chore that teachers assigned and never really served a purpose. My injury actually made summer reading quite simple. I couldn't go play outside, go out with my friends, or waste my evening biking. Books and TV were all I had to keep my brain from dying of boredom. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dauntless, Candor, Amity, and Erudite are all examples of these factions. I think these personality types fulfill at the basic needs of people. 2. The reasoning behind the creation of the factions was to create peace and order within the society. I believe that the factions are "working toward a better world" as they say they are. For Tris's society, the factions have held together structure in her community. In Tris's society the fact that they don't have a lot of choices is not really bettering their society. Another thing that isn't working in their society is that divergent's have to hide. 3. I would have been born into Candor because my family values honesty is over all. I think the braver faction is Dauntless because they jump off buildings and trains and I would not want to live to the Candor because of the truth serum. 9.Tris must make the team or end up factionless. Tris should ignore their reactions for no other reason than their reactions do not affect her own goals. 10. During initiation, Tris proves to herself that she belongs. She made friends, and instead of retreating within herself.... looked outside of herself. She made the right choice because it stimulated her to be better, had she chosen a different faction she might never have reached her true potential. 11. To be fearless is to have no fear. When you control your fears you are able to do anything When Tris says "half of bravery is perspective" she's saying the way some people choose to be brave is how they view a current situation. 12. My Summer Reading Influenced My Life A typical summer day in the life of a six–year old girl would consist of many common fun activities such as coloring, watching the latest television shows on Disney Channel, and playing with Barbies. However, when I was six years old my summer did not include any of those activities. Rather, my day included summer reading lists, books, and even more books. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy any of the fun activities most six–year old girls did at my age, but I was much more fascinated with learning. Through reading I enjoyed learning new words, phrases, and ideas. For example, I would loved reading books by Dr. Seuss because of the words and phrases that rhymed together. By the influence of my mother, I was introduced to an environment such as the public library, where all I was surrounded by were books. A part of the reason why my mother encouraged me so much to read is because her parents also pushed her to read too. She states, "My parents motivated me to learn how to read and write in English because as immigrants they couldn't speak or write in the language." She also states, "They encouraged all of my siblings and me to learn English so we could continue expanding our knowledge and education." I believe that because of my mother's encouragement to read at a young age has allowed me to develop a strong connection with reading. For example, throughout high school my goal was to receive good grades all four years so I could attend a four–year university. I spent the majority of my time doing homework, studying for exams, and preparing for my classes, all of which require a form of reading. • 31. Book Thief Summer Reading The Book Thief Summer Reading Essay Over the summer of 2014 I read The Book Thief, a novel by Markus Zusak. Prior to reading this book I honestly thought it was just going to be another stereotypical WWII story that just revolves around a hidden Jew and the bland home life of a nervous German family. I was proven wrong by the time I read the first chapter. The Book Thief turned out to be so much more than I imagined it would be. The characters weren't the typical stock characters I had predicted. They had their own personal struggles and lives outside of hiding a Jew. Everything in the book had a story behind it, whether it be Max's accordion or how Liesel came to live with a new family. There were almost no dull moments and I was able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From day one, " Rudy was always determined to be Liesel's best friend."(Zusak 48) and that was how it was with Georgie and I. Zusak says " A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship."(Zusak 48) My friendship with my neighbor also had a "snowball to the face" start. Shortly after moving into his neighborhood, I was walking my dog Chloe but got distracted and dropped the leash, and Chloe took off after a squirrel in Georgie's yard. I was too busy trying to chase her down to watch where I was going and ended up running smack into Georgie who was getting the newspaper from the end of his driveway. We began talking and everything went from there. Both boys also did their share of eccentric acts, like Rudy's Jesse Owens incident where he covered himself in charcoal and ran around the town's track, pretending to be the famous olympic sprinter, Jesse Owens. Coming home one day and finding Georgie and my little sister dressed as wizards pushing each other up and down the street in a wheelbarrow certainly competes with the peculiar acts of Rudy Steiner. ... • 35. Why Summer Reading Is Important Summer Reading Paper Lindsey Willingham Over the summer I read the book the crossover and the book I am Number Four. I think students should be required to read over the summer for the following reasons. First, most kids do not get engaged in educational activities over the summer, which leads to learning loss, and reading over the summer can help that. Next, kids can learn a lot from reading and can learn many new words, and gain knowledge. It also helps improve focus and concentration. Reading is important all the time, but especially over the summer when you're not focused on educational activities. When I first knew we had to do summer reading I thought it was dumb and there was no point. Now that I think about it, there definitely was a point; I was not involved in many educational activities over the summer except for summer reading." Research shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the end of the school year." • 37. Summer Reading Analysis As I reflect on my summer reading of the book "The Lord of the Flies", I am able to recall a few habits that I experienced. Some were more evident than others to say the least. You see, before I begin reading a book I make predictions on what the book is going to be about by looking at the title and the cover page. In addition, it's important for me to find a quiet place before I begin reading. Furthermore, before I start my reading it is important for me to set goals, so I can accomplish as much of the reading I'm required to complete. Most importantly, I must be able to not only complete the reading assignment, but also have a good comprehension of its context. Moreover, I've realized that during my reading there are other habits that I use, which is to make sure I understand the section I'm reading before I move on to the next part of the book. ... When I finish reading a book, I reflect on the author's message and internalize how it made me feel. The reason I have this habit, is, so that I can learn and become knowledgeable in the material I've read. Upon my completion of the summer reading book and essay, I was impressed with my results. The reason I say this is due to how well I understood the context of the author, and how accurate the examples supported its message. But I do not believe that Converse students would refuse to read their assigned book, because they know that Converse values acceptance of any religion, race, and sexuality. But if this issue did arise, I believe the Board of Converse College would take a similar approach to the issue like UNC, by making the assignment optional to students. But still requiring student to participate in their group discussion. The option would be up to the students. In this case study, lots of questions were left unanswered. • 61. Divergent: Summer Reading Project I chose the book Divergent for my 2016 Summer Reading Project because I enjoyed the book when I read it. Divergent tells a story about Beatrice (AKA Tris). She lives in a dystopian city where everyone is divided into five factions. The factions are: Erudite (The Knowledgeable), Amity (The Peaceful), Candor (The Truthful), Abnegation (The Selfless), and Dauntless (The Brave). Tris doesn't fit into any of these five categories and she would rather kill herself than become one of the Factionless (the people who didn't succeed in their faction initiation and are basically homeless). She is told that she is Divergent, a person who cannot be controlled by any one group and therefore feared by everyone. I enjoyed this book because it tells me what life could be like in the future and how human beings could mess up the world. I wouldn't fit into any one faction and I don't think anyone in the world would. "I am fed up with tears and weakness" (Roth 117). This reminds me of the book Fahrenheit 451. In the book, nobody ever cares about anything. They do the same thing every day and nothing ever changes. In Divergent, people in Dauntless are not scared, and are ready to fight, whereas in Amity, nobody would ever fight. • 69. Summer Reading Reflection Make Your Home Among Strangers Summer Reading Reflections Reflection Questions: 1. Why does Lizet feel like a fish out of water both at Rawlings and at home in Miami? The consequences of growing up poor in Miami and Lizet's subsequent transition into a Northeastern liberal arts student created two facets of her personality that were unable to mesh together. This was something that she was willing to acknowledge yet unwilling to admit was causing problems both at home and at school. "El" was 'too Cuban' for her white classmates at Rawlings, and "Liz" was 'too white' for her friends and family in Hialeah and Little Havana. The mannerisms that she'd adopted from each group of people was seen as unsuitable to the other, which frequently caused Lizet's inner monologue to feel discomforted and kept her at war with herself. 2. How does Lizet cope with the challenges of being a minority student at Rawlings? For the first semester of her studies at Rawlings, Lizet fails to cope with the challenges properly and finds herself isolated from her peers and failing her classes. The relatively poor work of the administration on the diversity board and their ice cream socials left her feeling like she was without dependable support from the college, although she consciously decided to turn a blind eye to the academic resources available to her for the first few months. Once she finally realized how badly she was struggling and the risk her academic career was put in, Lizet threw herself into improving her grades but continued to allow her social life to struggle. The misunderstandings her peers had of the more Latina aspects of herself ranging from her word choices to what temperature she straightened her hair at created a bridge that Lizet further burned with volatile behavior. 3. What could Lizet do, if anything, to bridge the cultural and generational gaps with her mother? In many ways, Lizet was unable to bridge any kind of gap with her mother because of their severe lack of communication. Lizet's mom envisioned the ideal daughter as being someone like Caridaylis, a young mother (figure) centered around her family with them being her primary concern. • 73. Summer Reading Strategies VIII. Closing and Wrap Up "Placing books in the hands of children to develop an interest in reading is critical. Placing targeted, high–interest books with STEAM focus in the hands of children is brilliant." – Patrick Pope, principal RIF launched a program called Read for Success. This is a summer reading program where children, parents, teachers and members of the community come together to support a child to read during the summer. Children who don't read over the summer risk losing up to three months of important skills that they learned during the school year. This is especially true of children from low–income families. Summer learning loss poses a real threat to a student's academic success and ability to function later on in life. Once a child falls behind, they rarely catch up. Summer Reading Analysis Summer Reading Essay Everything that has happened to me, every TV show I have watched, every person that I have met, and every book I have read has molded me into the homosapien I am today. The clothing I wear, the music I listen to, and the people I talk to is heavily influenced by embarrassing mistakes of the past. To put it simply, I like books and movies and I used to love them. The constant page turning and scene watching had shown me extravagant worlds that didn't exist, but I grew to love the people that lived in them. I sometimes loved them more than the people in real life. The connection I had felt to the fictional worlds gave me an almost pathetic sense of joy, but that over joy gave me the chance to grow into myself. Reading has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I think rather than impulsively deciding that she should never have involved Henry in her life again because it was strangely selfish to do so, Taylor should have realized that she was desperately in need of his support more than ever and that he was willing to oblige, given his caring personality. I think Taylor felt almost as if she needed to give all her time to her family. For example, she speaks about the contrast of being at home and being at the lake house."I kept thinking back to all those nights in Connecticut, when I was out the door as soon as dinner was over, yelling my plans behind me as I headed to my car, ready for my real night to begin–my time with my family just something to get through as quickly as possible. And now that I knew that the time we had together was limited, I was holding onto it, trying to stretch it out, all the while wishing I'd appreciated what I'd had earlier." Taylor feels guilty and pressure to spend the most time with her family but at the same time she can't just put a pause on her life completely and cut people out

  • 80. Catcher In The Rye Summer Reading Assignment For my summer reading assignment I chose to read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. I chose this book for two reasons, one because it was the only book on the list that I had even heard about and two because a friend of mine had recommended it to me. Personally I did not enjoy the book at all. Now I could have gotten another book after I realized that I didn't like this book, which was after the I finished the first chapter, but Barnes and Noble is really far away from my house. I also figured that I should read this book as a punishment since that's what this whole assignment feels like since, you know we're on summer break. Plus I like to finish what I start. A question I had to keep in mind while reading this book was what does this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
