This document discusses three artists - Peter Lowe, Sol LeWitt, and Bridget Riley - that inspired the proposals of artist Mason Hilligenn. It provides a brief overview of each artist's style and techniques. The first proposal describes a laser-cut card shape incorporating patterns from all three artists. The second proposal combines two pieces by Sol LeWitt to create an optical illusion similar to Bridget Riley's Op art style.

PROPOSALS
Peter Lowe
Peter Lowe was one of the artists that really caught my
eye when I visited the Tate Gallery. What I love about his
work is the way that each individual model can be solved
as if it was a puzzle. He calls these pieces of art
‘Systems’. His work is geometric and very simplistic and
this is what inspired me to look into some of his work and
techniques further. He often uses wood in his model
making, for example, the sketch above is of an artwork of
his called ‘Diagonal Grey Relief’ and is described simply
as ‘wood and paint’. As you will see from my own work it
is very Peter Lowe inspired.

Sol LeWitt
Solomon "Sol" LeWitt was an American artist linked to
various movements, including Conceptual art and
Minimalism. After researching him online I discovered that
his work mainly revolves around the use of lines. Some of
which he uses colour, some of which don’t. From what I
gather a lot of his work is on the larger scale and is often
used on walls almost like wallpaper. Some of his work has
also been made into statue like figures and placed in
public areas. From LeWitts work I have been inspired to
experiment with the use of lines and shapes, this is
reflected in my own artwork.
Bridget Riley
Bridget Louise Riley CH CBE is an English painter who is
one of the foremost exponents of Op art (short for optical
art, is a style of visual art that uses optical illusions. Op
art works are abstract, with many better known pieces
created in black and white). Her images produce intense
sensations of movement and colour that engage the
viewer in the experience of viewing. Her work these days
is something that can be quite easily created using
various softwares however Riley has used a range of
paints such as acrylic and temperua to create her
paintings,

PROPOSALS
This is my first
proposal. After
looking at all 3 of
my artists I
wanted to in
some way
combine their
work. Using Peter
Lowes systems
and some of
LeWitt’s and
Bridget Riley’s
patterns I have
laser cut a shape
using card and
have drawn
patterns over the
top. Eventually I
plan to have 3
different systems
next to each
other all of which
will be made from
a different
material and
function
differently to the
other 2.

PROPOSALS
This time combining
two pieces of Sol
LeWitt’s work
together for my
second proposal.
What struck me
about the two
chosen pieces of art
works was that they
were in a very similar
style to Riley’s Op
style. I wanted to
create something
that gave a similar
effect and therefore I
had to have a go at
creating something
that plays with the
eyes. Personally I
think this worked
well and could
potentially be
developed further
into using other
materials and
possibly using 3D.
