1. Gallery 1
The purpose of this assignment was for us as students to try to
learn more about the art world by visiting a gallery and study the works.
Explore closely the works that were being displayed more deeply then we
ever have before. Based from that, we had to describe how that
experienced have influenced us on the way we look or respond to art or
event.
2. What is art, and why are some people so obsess with it when it is nothing more but a
piece of work that is called art? Before I started studying art, this was me. Art has several aspects
that allow artists to express their thought. Art is not just about beauty whereas non artists don’t
know, and that’s where at first I often got myself fooled because I used to think it was all about the
beauty. Now That I started studying art, I have learned that art does not only focuses or exists in
one style, but also exists in a huge variety in which gives artists more options for experimenting in
all sort of ways to express their crazy thoughts.
3. Emma Rochester: Touching the Earth
Here is a n installation work by Emma Rochester. When I first entered the room where it was being
displayed, I saw those pinkish objects laying and hanging all over the room. I was getting this feminism expression,
and I thought to my self maybe the artist’s purposes for this work was because she wants to display her work in a way
which the work is also displaying a show for us the audience like one of those showgirl show. In this case, it is an aerial
dance performance. As I was surveying the room, saw a flyer about the installation. Even after finding out the title of
the installation "touching the Earth” and who the artist was, it really did not change my point of view toward my first
thought. I looked at it carefully one last time her work , and since she calls it touching the Earth, I added a little bit of
what I thought could be right to the way I perceived her work. It was since her show is displaying a show. The show
won’t be over until all the performers fall and touch the ground.
4. Emma Rochester and Janell Wysock: Leaning into the
Earth.
Here is another work by one of the same artist from the previous work. Similar methods but displayed in a much
narrower room. The first one was touching the Earth and now this one is leaning into the Earth. It bugged me out knowing the fact
I came to a conclusion with the first installation “touching the earth” and encountered to “Leaning into the Earth” what’s to me
has a connection to the previous one. I didn't really know how to interpret this one even after spending some good time looking
and wondering, my only hypothesis or analogy was maybe it is telling the audience something about the solar system. Every
obstacles in our solar system such as, planets, stars, asteroids, etc. in a way or angles are all leaning toward the earth because they
can be spotted from the Earth. I came to this conclusion because the artists used a black room to present this work, and use lights
from the ceiling as a metaphor for the sun because light can help people spot things that we wouldn’t be able to see. In that case
the sun helps us see things from far out of space that are leaning toward our planet Earth.
5. Jen McCleary: Pollination
This is a collaging piece of work .I think she used digital scraps, color and texture to integrate. This work gives me
the feels of the natural world, whereas defining the weather. You have the orange and brown dots which tell me about fall season. A
branch of tree with no leaves and the whitish area, a sign of winter. There is also a dark and scary feeling coming out from this
work and it exposes fall is coming to an end during the cold night.
6. Jen McCleary: Exploration: setting sail
Again the same artist, similar methods in this one compare to “Pollination”. In this work, I think she used printed digital scraps,
found objects for some of the textures and collaging to come up with the final output.
7. Serge Jolimeau: Sirene avec deux
poissons ( Sirene with two fishes)
Serge is a metal sculptor which in this
piece he used recycled steel from oil drum
It looks like those two fishes are lost from
where they were originally from and live
with their groups. Sirene is now doing what
a mother would do by taking care of them
and protecting them with her scale from the
predators because the fishes spices are easy
target in the ocean.
