1. Social Adjustment
Elderly Adults are usually physically and
cognitively healthy. Aging comes with many
losses such as the loss of a spouse and retiring
from a job due to poor health problems or
because of age. Retirement may be considered
good or bad depending on the person that is
going through with it. A person’s brain might start
to work differently and changes are noticed. A
cover story named “The mind at midlife” describes
how a human’s brain could change.
Psychologists have found that older adults use more of their
brains often to get tasks done.
The amount of white matter in the brain that forms the
connections among nerve cells increases till the age of 40 or 50
but then decreases again.
Older adults emotions and social interactions changes as they
age. Studies have found older adults become calmer and less
neurotic as they age. Psychologist Cheryl Grady, PhD believes
there are some developmental changes that really don’t hit their
peak until somewhere in middle age.
2. Successful Aging
Aging successfully is important because older
adults should be able to have a sense of life
satisfaction and also adjust to both physical and
social changes. Even if an older adult suffers from
a chronic ailment they rate their health as good.
Studies have been done in successful aging and
it’s benefits.
There is also a interest in successful aging. One
reported by Healthy People 2000 has been
considered largely.
The effort by Healthy People 2000 also studies and
monitors the health of older adults.
The effort should also contribute a lot to the
motivation, monitoring, and measurement of success
in aging for the older adult populations.
