Can Stem Mapping help
understand patterns of soil
respiration?
Ben Lee Mentors: Mary Martin & Matt Vadeboncoeur
• Mycorrhizae associate with almost all plants
– Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (AM)
– Ectomycorrhizae (EM)
• Stands are about 50/50
• Stands dominated by trees with AM Fungi will
likely have higher soil respiration rates
– AM fungi promote microbial activity in the soil
• Tree positions identified through the use of a
hypsometer and a compass
• Soil respiration data and dominate tree species
will be compared

If a tree stands in the forest and nobody knows where it is: Mapping trees in the MELNHE plots.
