Panama Canal
The Panamá Canal is a man–made 48–mile waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean to
the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for
international maritime trade. The idea of creating a water passage across the famous isthmus of
Panama to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans dates back to at least the 1500s to 1600s , when
Charles the king of spain t tapped his regional governor to survey a route along the Chagres River.
This route at the time seemed as if it was not going to work out well but ended up being one of the
most important trading canals in all of history in the last five centuries. The men behind the Suez
Canal and Eiffel Tower were convicted in connection with failed effort to build a canal. There were a
few nations that would go ahead and try to build the panama canal but they did not succeed. French
company headed by Ferdinand de Lesseps, a former diplomat who developed Egypt's Suez Canal,
began digging a canal across Panama. The project was plagued by poor planning, engineering
problems and tropical diseases that killed thousands of workers. (Elizabeth Wix, History.com) Yes
that is correct, there were over 25,000 people killed during the construction of the Panama canal.

The new plans to remodel the Panama Canal are projected to cost over 5.25 billion US dollars.
(Greenberg, Peter Peter Greenberg.com) the Panama Canal was the engineering marvel of its time.
The 48–mile canal shortened the trip between San Francisco and New York by 8,000 nautical miles,
changing the way goods and services across the globe. Right now, up to 40 ships a day transit the
canal, saving ships an average of 29 days at sea. However, there is still a backlog of ships each day

Compare And Contrast Essay On John F Kennedy

Modern America
Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy: compared lives and deaths
November 22, 1963, Dallas Texas, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy rode along the streets of
Dallas, Texas in an open top motorcade. The president's vehicle turns onto ELM ST. passing the
Texas School Book Depository. When the limousine turned onto ELM ST. Nellie Connally turned to
look at President Kennedy and said, "You sure cant say that Dallas doesn't love you, Mr. President."
Ironically, a few moments later President Kennedy was shot, and the waving stopped. The cheering
turned into panic. Fear and confusion filled the eyes of everyone. A similar thing happened to his
brother Robert (Bobby) Francis Kennedy. On June 5, 1968, after RFK won the Democratic primary
in California, an assassin or multiple ones shot RFK as he passed through the pantry of the
Ambassador Hotel. The two brothers died in their strive to change the world through politics.
However, their deaths were not mere coincidences or random acts of violence. The two
assassinations contained a history and events that led up to the deaths. May 29, 1917 John Fitzgerald
Kennedy emerged into the world to a wealthy and politically prominent family in Brookline,
Massachusetts. John, much like his family, had high intellect in many fields including politics. He
graduated with a high honors degree from Harvard University in international ... Show more content

It is also a similarity to JFK's assassination. John F. Kennedy was shot multiple times, but based on
one video recording and the autopsy, all of the bullet wounds could not have come from the
depository. John F. Kennedy was hit four times in fact. One of the shots came from in front. Oswald
was in the back right of the motorcade. RFK had a similar case. Robert had a wound that would've
occurred from behind, but Sirhan was always in front. Both cases seem to support the possibilities

Unfair Electoral System In Canada
Canadian Problem 1: Unfair Electoral System
The main reason why this system is unfair is because each riding is won by the candidate who
receives the most votes, even if that candidate receives less than half of the constituency. Therefore,
it is possible for a political party to win a majority of seats in the House of Commons. A
disadvantage of FPTP voting is that a small increase in the number of votes a party's candidate
receives results in a larger increase in the number of seats that party's candidate wins. For example,
in the 2011 federal election the Conservative Party received 39.62% of the total votes but won 54%
of the seats, while the NDP captured 30.63% of the total votes, but received only 33.12% seats.

This means that the Canadian Senate would have to be elected by the citizens, the senate would need
to be equal and effective in their terms. The implementation of a senate which is elected rather than
appointed would ensure that representatives are more responsive to the public. It would also give the
Senate the authority to exercise the powers given to it by the Canadian constitution. Any political
institution can obtain formal and legal powers, but if the public does not want them to use it, then
these powers may not be exercised. Currently, the senate has 104 seats, which are divided into 4
divisions. Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and the Western provinces each share 24 seats.
Newfoundland has 6 seats, Yukon and Northwest Territories each have 1. Under the triple E senate,
there would be 6 representatives from each and every province. This would create a new 62 member
senate which would be elected at the same time as Members of Parliament. The principle of equality
means that every province would be equally represented in the Senate regardless of its population.
The idea of equal representation arises when provinces like Ontario are compared smaller provinces
such as Alberta. Since Ontario's population is much bigger, it could automatically become the
majority in the House of Commons. Other provinces cannot have the same powers as Ontario. With

Canada Should Not Re-Open The Constitution
The story of the Canadian Constitution is a long and rocky one. It began in 1864 during the
Charlottetown conference in 1864, lead to the implementation of the British North America Act in
1867, before finally being patriated in Canada in 1982 (Dodek 2013, 21, 28). However, it was
patriated without the signature of Quebec, putting the future of Canada in peril. Future attempts to
open the constitution were messy, and ultimately failures, but there are still some who think Canada
should give one more kick at the can (Dodek 2013, 31). The paper will argue that Canada as a
country should not re–open the constitution. The paper will be organized in the following way. First,
it will look at the two historical attempts to open the constitution, ... Show more content on

It is clear that the current system does not work, and some sort of reform is needed, but it does not
necessarily have to be the structural reform that requires constitutional amendments to be made.
While some may say it is necessary to create an elected senate, there are other options to give the
Senate more legitimacy. Just because a body is appointed does not mean it cannot have a measure of
popular support. Take for instance the Supreme Court of Canada, which is an appointed body that is
wildly respected, and the reason they are respected are because they are professionals who perform a
crucial role in society. A better class of senate could be achieved by changing the process to appoint
senators by cutting down on patronage and partisan appointments to give it more legitimacy
(Crowley Et al 2014, 13).
In a similar vein of creating a senate that is not beholden to political parties, and their masters,
making it a more independent body is to continue along the route that Primer Justin Trudeau started
in 2014, by kicking out Liberal Senators from his caucus (Cudmore 2014). By creating independent
senators, and attempting to make them the new normal it would make the senate a true chamber of
sober second thought. These are just two proposals to help the senate, but they provide a wider idea
of what is possible beyond the few suggestions the Harper

Why Was A Reformed Senate?
Senate reform has been a much–debated topic in Canada. Since the early 1970s, there have been at
least 28 major proposals for constitutional senate reform. All of them have failed. But once again,
thanks to the senate expenses scandal, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and his government have
proposed yet another reform. Would a reformed senate solve the current issues of the senate or
would it make it worse? This paper would discuss why a reformed senate would bring about more
problems than it will solve. The construct of my paper is basic. Firstly, I would be looking at the
Canadian senate, its roles and functions, and present and past problems. Next, I would look at some
senatorial reform proposals and what these various reforms all look to change. I shall conclude this
paper by providing my view on why a reformed senate would bring up more issues than it would
solve. The senate is viewed as a reflective body. It is often called the 'chamber of sober second
thought'. The Canadian senate is still one of the only ones in modern democracy not to have
undergone senatorial reform. This makes for the Canadian senate to "represent and embody some of
the most anti democratic features of representative assemblies" (Docherty pp.27). The senate is the
upper house of the parliament. It has 105 seats, distributed as fairly as possible amongst the various
provinces. Senators are appointed and this is the major reason for people wanting senatorial reform,
however the Canadian senate have

How Sales Are Influenced by the Addition of Artificial...
Influenced of labeled artificial Ingredients certified organic products on sale
Introduction
There is an old saying that use to announce the following: You are what you eat", at least that is
what they say. Are customers losing faith in today's natural market with the combination of synthetic
ingredients that are now being mixed in with it? It needs to be understood that in today's
supermarkets, a person can buy organic food grown anywhere. Individual do not have to just worry
about organic meats and vegetables, but customers can also buy organic dairy products, such as
things foods that are considered advantageous, organic meats, coffee beans, organic wine, alcoholic
drink, tea and even fashions purchase clothes that contain organic cotton. All of these different
selections have really made organic foods the "wildest growing sector of the grocery
manufacturing." The Organic Trade Association (OTA), in its "Corporate Evidences" fact sheet
which a person can see at www.ota.com, will allow a person a brief assessment of the cites in the
Natural Foods Merchandiser food cycle, which is a trade periodical, being used in measuring
organic business event that has grown 30 percent or even more for in the past 12 years. Around two
percentage of the U.S. food supply is being grown daily by using organic methods without artificial
mixes. In 2001, customers went on a rampage and bought a lot of organic provisions of which was

The Canadian Governing System is not Fair or Democratic...
There are Canadian citizens who thought that the Canadian government we have is perfect, citizens
who believed that every aspect of the government was truly democratic, and citizens who believe
that government could do no wrong. Truly this group of believers has been living a lie. In our
Canadian system of government, large aspects within are far from democratic and need to be
changed. Liberal–minded people will cry out for a change in order for government to serve the
people better, and on the other hand the more conservative thinkers will argue that no change is
needed because our government is efficient and considerate. However, our voting system, our
Senate, and the power vested to the Prime Minister are far from democratic, do not ... Show more

It was obvious that he would make votes in favour of Chretien's aims. However, even with his
appointed position he only very rarely showed up for work, ignoring his basic obligations as
Senator. Even when the whole of the government was in outrage at this incompetence, they could
not legally kick him out of office. There will inevitably be more incidents like these unless the
Senate is reformed. Thankfully, there are several possible ways to reform the Senate as to make it a
more democratic institute.
The Senate, undemocratic as it is, obviously needs some tweaks and changes in the system to make
it more so. The Canadian Senate should reform entirely into a triple–E Senate (Elected, Efficient,
Equal). In the Triple E Senate, Senators should be elected by the voters instead of appointed, the
efficient distribution of power towards the Senate to balance out the power. This would create a
more democratic and fairer Senate that would better serve the needs of the citizens it represents.
While the Triple–E Senate may not get things done nearly as quickly as the current Senate, it would
at least make the right decisions for everyone. While the Senate is a major blight upon Canadian
government, it is not the only one.
The Canadian Prime Minister presents the illusion that this so–called democratic Canada is run by
the will of the people and attempts to maintain this image, yet the truth is that the power stays

Why Did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor Research Paper
Why Did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor? The morning of December 7th, 1941 was calm and quiet on
the island of Pearl Harbor. A gentle breeze was blowing, and the only thing one could hear was the
gentle crashing of ocean waves. The people looking up at the bright blue sky would have no idea
that this day would later live in infamy. On this day, hundreds of Japanese aircrafts and submarines
suddenly attacked the island. Numerous U.S. weapons and ships were destroyed, and over two
thousand people were killed in the attack. Japan attacked the U.S. because of embargo on oil, to
create a new order, and because of the fleet expansion. One of many reasons why Japan attacked
Pearl Harbor was because of the U.S. oil embargo. In comments at Imperial Conference in 1941,
Japanese Prime Minister said, "Two years from now, we will have no petroleum for military use. ... I
fear that we would become a third class nation after two or three years." (document E). Tojo is
implying that the U.S. stopped oil trade intentionally to keep military from gaining this petroleum.

fleet expansion. In July of 1940, U.S. congress passes Naval Expansion Act. They promise to triple
fleet size by 1944 (document C). The U.S. was building up their military to defend themselves. This
could worry other countries. Japan is worried that the U.S. could possibly be stronger than Japan, or
even attack. This would give a big reason to retaliate and fight against the United States. Next, Tojo
says, "When I think about the expansion of the American fleet..., I see no end to difficulties. I fear
we would become a third class nation." (Document E) Tojo viewed the fleet expansion of the U.S. as
a direct threat to Japan. They feared that the expansion would hurt Japan and lower their status. If
they felt threatened, then they would feel fear for the country, naturally leading to wanting to

Age Discrimination and Mandatory Retirement
Age Discrimination and Mandatory Retirement – Joyce Cook
The mandatory retirement age controversy should be re–examined and redefined further. Baby
boomers are very different from their predecessors; they are living longer, maintain lifestyles that
are more active and are generally better able to continue working than in the past. The real challenge
is the reality of how the insufficient number of young people will fill the vacancies left by the aging
workforce. Mandatory retirement may be unavoidable, as older workers are forced from the work
field to create more vacancies for new younger employees. According to most seniors, it is an unfair
practice and does not take into account if the person wants to retire; it also does ... Show more

In addition, to accommodate the changing abilities of older workers, employers need to re–design
the job as well. Instead of having to hire new younger workers who are not as skilled or trained in
the job, there is a chance it would benefit employers to accommodate older workers' needs.
Functionality and not chronological age must become the prime criteria in all employment practices.
As baby boomers exit the work force, letting people work longer could help to curb a predicted
skilled and experienced labor shortage in many occupations. Employers need to revise human
resource plans to reflect the possibility of more employees working past their previously expected
retirement date as well as change testing and performance evaluations to reflect the reality of an
aging workforce. Organizations need to develop programs to maximize the contributions of older
workers, particularly in the areas of adult learning and flexible work arrangements; it may
encourage older workers who wish to continue working. Labor force participation rates of older
ages has been on the rise slightly since 1970 and is projected to rise more in the coming years.
Couple slow labor force growth with an aging population and it poses serious economic and fiscal
challenges to America in the 21st century. Policies that encourage those older workers who want to
continue doing so that

Despite this conclusion supporting my pre existing views I can't help but feel as though I'm missing
something. I want to believe that there's more reasons that ODS programs aren't more widely spread,
that there is a greater issue than the conclusion I came to but I can't find anything.
I am however glad though because now I know that it's possible for other states to adopt ODS
programs as regular experiences for their middle school students. There is nothing that I want more

unsettled Middle East, and a resurgent China all pose threats to American national interests. The
Islamic State undoubtedly invokes the greatest amount of fear in the hearts of the world, but it may
be the rise of China that truly tests American resolve. The China Sea is of extreme economic,
political and military importance to the United States. This is evident from the Obama

As the heart of the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) and Seventh Fleet, the aircraft carrier must carry its
100,000 ton weight in this fight. The CSG must find a way to counter the A2/AD threat in order to
be an effective tool in the South China Sea, and the reported $14 billion dollar price tag says that it
better. The planned composition of a Carrier Air Wing (CVW) consists of 3 FA–18E/F, 1 F/A–18G,
1 F–35C, 1 E–2D, and 2 MH–60 squadrons. The scope of this research is limited to the need to
protect the carrier strike group from attacking aircraft and striking ground and sea based targets on
the Chinese coast. For this intent, the capabilities and limitations of the E–2D and MH–60 are not of
immediate concern. However, it is important to fully analyze not only the capabilities, but the
limitations of the strike–fighter aircraft in the air wing. Each FA–18E/F squadron consists of 12
aircraft that have the ability to perform both the air–to–air and air–to–ground role as well as perform
airborne refueling. The requirement to perform airborne refueling is extremely important as the S–3
Viking was removed from service in 2009. The FA–18E/F has a limited combat radius of less than
400nm without airborne refueling, considerably less than what would be required to strike any
targets under the 1200nm protective ring of Chinese DF–21 missiles. A

The Usefulness Of The Canadian Senate
David C. Docherty's scholarly journal responds to the continual controversy and debate of the
usefulness of the Canadian senate in 2002. Docherty's article does an amazing job at analyzing the
current Canadian senate and argues that the senate is a failing Canadian institution because of two
democratic deficiencies: the undemocratic nature of senator selection and the inability of senators to
represent provinces properly (45). These two features of why the senate is a failing Canadian
institution can be compared to how Rand Dyck defines democracy in Canadian Politics: Critical
Approaches. Docherty looks at several previous senate reforms and answers the question of why
these senate reforms failed, in doing so Docherty lays down a framework for a possible successful
senate reform but acknowledges the obstacles. Docherty does a very good job at accessing the
problem of the senate, accessing the problem of previous reforms, and suggesting a plausible type of
reform for the senate. This provides the reader with the knowledge of why the Canadian senate is a
failing institution but also the possible solutions of how the senate can be reformed in order to
maximize its democratic potential. Although, Docherty fails to provide an exact reform that needs to
be taken, he just draws upon other failures and hypothesis that this may be the right solution for
reform. Rand Dyck's chapter 11 fills in the missing gap of reform that needs to be taken by drawing
upon one of the best attempts at

The study draws economic analogies for Heisenberg's Uncertainty principle and concentrates on the
17 largest Investment Banks and the 10 largest Mutual Funds. It tries to quantify the uncertainty and
lists the economic mass of every institution from among the two groups and the average economic
masses of each group as well. The study was restricted to publically listed Investment Banks and
Mutual Funds and the model was not applicable to privately held and boutique banks and also
wasn't applicable to hedge funds and other private funds which did not report their Net Asset Value
Returns. According to the findings, the economic mass was highest for Goldman Sachs while
Toronto Domino Bank shows the least economic mass. When it comes to Mutual Funds, Pimco the
world's largest mutual fund had the lowest economic mass; the exposure to the crisis could be the
reason behind this. The American Funds Growth Fund of America has the highest economic mass.
This study has been able to show that the Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle has implications for
financial institutions. For future research, one could look into applying the model for privately held
Financial Institutions and those funds which do not report their returns like Hedge Funds.

The Importance Of Political Culture In Canada
"The spirit of democracy cannot be imposed from without. It has to come from within". (Gandhi,
Coward, H. G. pg. 31, paragraph 1). A democratic country is one where it listens to its people and
considers their interests rather than imposing their own will on others. Political culture is a term
which is used in social science and it means to have a shared set of beliefs, feeling and values about
the political system and that connects the citizens and the government. Canadians value peace, order
and a good government. They are more of an individualist instead of collectivist which identifies
how Canadians like to work. They are also respective of authority however the status effect in
organizations is very low in Canada. Canadians are critically egalitarian and they care very much
about equality, rights and freedoms. Regionalism is the diversity of geographic and economic
concerns that are important to politics. This is also part of dualism because of the relationship
between the two major cultures in Canada, Anglophone and francophone. Both of these are
protected by the federal law. These factors immensely shape the political culture of Canada. Public
opinion impacts the society's political culture. Democratic governments exist to serve the public
which makes the public opinion important to consider. Canada is a participant political culture
which should be the case in a democratic country. Although the citizen's opinions matter, it does not
make or change the policies

one area that Cruz is especially passionate about is the many social issues that are debated by

Do you feel your government is fair? Does it manage the issues properly, with careful thought, and
an open, objective mind? Is it effective? Do you feel that the Senate is a "sober chamber of second
thought?" Do you feel that the best interests of the Canadian public are always preserved in the

... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In terms of the reform option, as a country, we absolutely cannot afford to abolish the Senate, as it
serves as, and is meant to be, a body of un–biased "economic and social élite", who are capable of
making/approving decisions to benefit the citizens of Canada, rather than the House of Commons,
which makes decisions by majority, and in their own interest. The Senate is meant to play a neutral
role, to be the final judge to make the un–biased, informed decisions. Sometimes, the Senate has
taken on other roles, which it performs and works with very effectively. In fairness to them, these
often do not receive much media coverage, increasing the public perception that Senators do very
little. For example, the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Tech released a
report on the Health Care system, a month before the Romanow Report on Human Health Resources
Planning.
They have also researched issues such as poverty in Canada, and legalizing Marijuana.
No matter which angle one looks at this from, the effective existence of the Senate is necessary to

Brazil, the Entrepreneurial and Democratic BRIC*
Leslie Elliott Armijo Portland State University Sean W. Burges University of Ottawa
By most objective metrics, Brazil is the least imposing of the ''BRICs countries''– less populous than
China and India, slower–growing in recent years than China, India, or Russia, and the only member
of the group lacking nuclear weapons. We argue that Brazil's material capabilities are more
significant than commonly supposed. Moreover, Brazil's democratic transition in the mid–1980s,

determined to steer a course independent of the major advanced industrial states that have
dominated global politics since the mid–twentieth century, Brazil perhaps calls to mind the India of
Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1950s and early 1960s. Nehru sought through the Non–Aligned Movement

Soviet Communism and Western capitalism. But a more appropriate heuristic might be Brazil as the

Canada's Parliamentary System Essay
On July 1st, 1867, Canada confederated into a nation and committed to uphold democracy "From
Sea to Sea". As stated in the Constitution of our nation, Canada would be governed through a
Parliamentary system, with both an upper and lower house of legislature. The lower house, the
House of Commons, would include elected members from across the country. Conversely, the upper
house, the Senate, according to Section 24 of the Constitution Act (1867), states: "The Governor
General shall... summon qualified Persons to the Senate; and... every Person so summoned shall
become... a Member of the Senate."[1] This has amounted to almost 800 Canadians being appointed
to the Senate since Confederation. However, as Canadians have grown to demand transparency ...

In retrospect, in order for the Senate to achieve any sort of democratic status, the federal chamber
should be comprised of elected members. Most criticism towards the Canadian Senate is directed at
the ineffectiveness of the upper house.[13] The Constitution states that the Senate shall act as a
'chamber of sober second thought' from the perceived more radical lower house.[14] However, the
Senate has proven to be useless in this process, and does not act as a voice of reason or
representative opinion. The argument that the Senate is more reflective of the national population
than the House of Commons definitely doesn't come cheap. Because Senators are not elected they
don't represent the public interest and therefore shear no accountability. This lack of accountability
allows for the chamber's activities to become autonomous and secretive. Ultimately, the citizens of
Canada are left in the dark in regards to the performance and activities of the Senate. At the same
time, when exploring the link between the upper and lower houses, it is rational to say that the
Senate serves no purpose in the Canadian political system. As Senators come into power through
recommendation of the Prime Minister, it is uncommon for the chamber to disagree with the
government. Therefore, Senator appointment does

The History of the Quebec Francophones and the Attempts Made to Accommodate Their Concerns
The merging of two separate and distinct groups is what has given Canada its unique cultural
identity. While some early politicians believed assimilation was the best approach to building a
strong Canada, it became increasing difficult to convince the Quebec francophones that a national
identity should take precedence over retaining their unique culture. Opposing viewpoints and
different agendas have caused mistrust among the Quebec francophones towards the federal
government and mistrust among other provinces towards Quebec. Constitutional amendments have
been proposed on a number of occasions and, to date, none have been successfully ... Show more

While it appears critical that Quebec be acknowledged as a distinct society, I believe it is imperative
that the issue of distinctness is granted not only to Quebec but also to all of Canada's first nation
people. Additional amendments to the constitution should include a provision that any group
recognized as a distinct society is given the same rights as any other distinct society. While Quebec
wishes to have special recognition and powers to maintain their unique cultural identity, so to should
the aboriginal people of Canada. If Quebec is awarded the right to limit the use of English language
in the province in favour of the French language, then the Cree of James Bay should also be granted
the right to have the Cree language take priority over French and English. The Inuit and the many
other aboriginal groups should also be recognized as distinct, having their own unique language and,
as such, have their language and culture protected and guaranteed under the constitution. While
Canada has entrenched the bilingual feature of our nation, it has failed to acknowledge that first
people of Canada, had languages of their own that should be recognized and protected.
Linguistic duality was embedded in the British North America Act of 1867 and has had both positive
and negative repercussions for Canada. Language has evoked divisive social and political tension
between French–speaking and English–speaking Canadians. (Jackson & Jackson, 1998: 230) By

Augustus 's Life During The Civil War
Augustus had a discouraging childhood as he was unhealthy and did not have many connections
with the government. Augustus was born on 23, September 63 BC. He was the son of a man from
Velitrae who was in the position of praetorship and died unexpectedly when Augustus was 4. At this
same time, Rome was dangerous because of extensive civil war. Augustus' great uncle, Julius
Caesar, was involved in this war. Augustus' father was married to Atia, who was the daughter of
Julia, Caesar's sister. Later on in Augustus' life, Caesar's distant family relationship was idle to how
Augustus came into power. When Augustus's grandmother, Julia, died, Augustus delivered the
eulogy at her funeral, which was his first public appearance. Soon after, Caesar won the civil war
and was given the title of dictator of Rome. In order for Caesar to claim power, he needed a heir.
Since he did not have a son of his own, he adopted Augustus. Augustus was a young man with no
knowledge of politics in Rome, therefore, this was a great opportunity for him to gain knowledge
from Caesar, since he was deemed son of Caesar. Soon after, Caesar died; he was murdered by his
own advisors. Augustus was 19 when this happened and instantly took power of Rome.
Augustus' victories have helped him glorify Rome during his reign as emperor, as well as showing
dedication to Rome, which was unfortunately false, overall, he only used his victories to gain
popularity in Rome. In 31 BC, Augustus defeated Cleopatra and Mark

In this essay I will discuss a few terms and how their relationships apply between regulation and
market structures, as well as how regulation policies affect the market.
A) There were 4 particular Antitrust Laws that were enacted with the primary purpose of protecting
consumers, striving to achieve fair competition in the market place, and to achieve and allocate
efficiency. The 4 Antitrust Laws that are major pieces of legislation are;
The Sherman Act of 1890
The Clayton Act of 1914
The Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914 (which also includes an Amendment known as the

The Celler–Kefauver Act of 1950 was an amendment to the Clayton Act of 1914 that particularly
had to do with section 7 prohibiting competitive firms from merging and or from similar acts by one
corporation from buying another corporations stock or physical assets (trying to act like a
monopoly) which both lessen competition. The main purpose of this act was to prevent anti–
competitive mergers and to close any loopholes.
B) The intended purpose of Industrial or Economic regulation as applied to Oligopolies and
Monopolistic market structures is used to reduce the market power of both! A government
commission regulates the prices charged by "natural monopolists." Industrial Regulation is
necessary to prevent natural monopolies from charging monopoly rates which may harm consumers/
society. Industrial Regulation tries to establish pricing that will cover production costs and provide a
fair amount of return to businesses. Price=Average Total Cost, where normal profit is accomplished.
(governs pricing, output, & profits in specific industries).
1) An Oligopolistic market structure is a structure where very few large businesses sell a particular
standard Good or differentiated Good, and to whose market entry proves difficult. This in turn, gives
little control over product pricing because of mutual interdependence (with the exception of
collusion among businesses) creating a non–price competition meaning they are the 'price setters'. A

Why Has Regionalism Developed In Canada
Regionalism as a whole is the concept that distinct geographic areas foster a unique and relatively
autonomous identity outside of the national framework in politics; essentially individuals ferment
regional identities through the relationships and communities that develop because of a shared
locality and economic situation. In particular, Canada has developed regionalism ever since its
constitution was drafted and consequently it has been a dominant force in the political
landscape/activity and dialogue of the country. In turn, scholars have discussed the actors behind
regionalism in Canada and there are three dominant explanations and mediums as to why: federal
institutions, federal policies, and the staples theory. In this essay, I will ... Show more content on

Historian Harold Innis developed the staples theory which postulated that Canada's economic
development was reliant on the succession of resource exports rather than manufacturing.
Furthermore, this doctrine illustrated notions of dependence in Canada combined with interregional
exploitation between inner and outer Canada. The staples theory asserted that a relationship between
a "metropolis" and "hinterland" existed in Canada and reflected the power dynamics of Canadian
economic and political society. The metropolis has the manufacturing sector and does well if it is
competitive to other metropolises and subsequently then has manufacturing jobs. On the other hand,
the hinterland is a rural and resource rich area that does exceedingly well economically if it has the
relevant resource and consequently grows in political strength. Toronto–Ottawa–Montreal triangle
obviously constitutes the metropolises of Canada with the largest concentration of corporate head
offices in the Toronto area combined with a substantial manufacturing nucleus in the Greater
Toronto Region. Nonetheless, if looking specifically at certain regions such as Alberta using the
core–periphery analysis or staples theory, one would likely deem Calgary and to a lesser extent
Edmonton as the core/metropolis of the region with areas like Fort McMurray and Leduc being the
periphery/hinterland.

Stakeholder Analysis
The triple aim of PPACA to promote accessible, high quality and cost efficient care involves large
number of reforms that influence all the segments associated with healthcare industry. These
reforms are affecting various stakeholders such as hospitals, physicians, and patients to varying
degrees and therefore policymakers need to consider independent stakeholder priorities along with
the impact on society and cost involved in order to achieve this triple aim. The Affordable Care Act
introduces payment reforms for individual physicians and for larger, organized health care systems,
ranging from bundled payments to payment adjustments for hospital–acquired conditions. Empirical
evidence shows that payment structures such as these can improve care delivery, costs, and quality

This is by no means the lowest accomplishment in the history of the Comprehensive Agrarian
Reform Program (CARP). The lowest recorded was 59,495 hectares of land distributed in 2009
because of the uncertainties brought about by the transition to implementing Republic Act No. 9700.
The second lowest was 97,795 hectares, recorded in 2003. Last year alone, the Department of
Agrarian Reform (DAR) distributed 111,889 hectares of land nationwide, which is slightly higher
than the 107,180 hectares distributed in 2010. The DAR completed the acquisition of 18,414
landholdings with a total area of 120,286 hectares for a gross accomplishment rate of 60 percent. Of
this area, 8,397 hectares are exclusions from the same landholding and retention areas of

percent of the LAD balance (900,188 hectares) are private agricultural land; almost 85 percent of the

The Congress Should Undergo A Reform
For many years, there has been an ongoing debate as to whether or not the Senate should undergo a
reform. Many Canadian citizens are unsatisfied with the fact that the Senate is not elected. How are
citizens to be sure that they are being properly represented when they are not able to choose who
represents them? Although the Senate is an integral part of the governmental system, many
Canadians are leaning towards the idea to completely abolish the Senate. The credible, David C.

An Analysis of Political Elitism Essay
An Analysis of Political Elitism
It is easy to believe that the middle–class working individual, whether he or she be white collar or
blue collar, wields little political power except for during an election. It is also easy to think that we
don't have true democracy; political representation elected by the people, for the people, and
controlled by these people. This is an ideology that is often worn out. Instead, these elected
representatives are controlled by political élites: high–ranking political "gladiators", the media,
lobbyists, and, though it may not seem evident, big business. It is, in essence, commonly believed by
most. Some reasons why political élites at times dominate government and who these groups are
will be examined in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From a sociological point of view, elitism deals with class structures. Marx describes these class
structures and what makes certain individuals "High Class" or "important". "The separation of
ownership from the management and control of industry" (Penguin Books, 1994, p.58). Marxists see
political élites as "bad guys" – theoretically, it is because they represent a small portion of the
population and are believed to control most of the political power and money. However, Plato's
Republic offers a different standpoint. In his work, political élites are seen as "good guys" – wise,
virtuous, and knowledgeable. It is difficult to define elitism, however. The above definition, first and
foremost, deals with financial status. What's more, Plato's opinions and definitions of elites are
blatantly out of date. Though political élites are predominately high–class and wealthy, it does not
explain interest groups and lobbyists. The men and women in these groups are, on the whole, not
particularly "rich" or "important". What makes them truly important or powerful is that they alter
public opinion (The media works in the same way, however this will be discussed later). The idea
that elites shape public opinion applies to all elites as well. Not to mention the fact that the majority
of Canadians have negative attitudes toward political elites. As a common sense definition we see
the actual people who are elites as "fat cats": Rich, privileged, with no concern for the

The Senate Should Be Abolished Of The Senate
The Senate plays a key role in tandem with the House of Commons, in the operation of Canada's
government, some people think that the Senate should be abolished; however without the Senate,
"The right to bear arms" could become true for Canada. The Senate should be reformed; abolishing
or keeping the Senate at its current state would be unjust. The current Senate is not elected,
effective, nor equal. If the Senate is kept at its current state, it will continue to operate fine, however
the Senate can be much more effective at what it does if it gets amended. Currently the Senate is not
elected, equal, nor efficient. People who comprise the Senate are selected by the governor general
on the advice of the Prime Minister, so those selected most likely will act in good intention towards
the Prime Minister. The Senate, unlike the House was designed to represent Canada's regions,
however it over–represents some provinces at the expense of others. For example currently, Quebec
and Ontario each have 24 seats, the same amount of seats as the four Western provinces as a whole.
Atlantic Canada, with a mere 7% of the population, holds a unproportional 29% of the seats.
Canadians deserve laws that are fair and free of errors, and the Senate contributes to that. The
Senate's job is to foster national unity, however currently they act in the interest of themselves and
the Prime Minister rather than in the interest of the people.
Abolishing the Senate is country suicide. If there is a

Amazon History And Overview Paper
Company History and Overview
Amazon.com, Inc. (Amazon.com), incorporated on May 28, 1996, is an American electronic
commerce company with headquarters in Seattle, Washington and is the largest Internet–based
retailer in the United States (Ungar, 2014). Amazon.com started as an online bookstore, but soon
diversified, selling DVDs, Blu–rays, CDs, video downloads/ streaming, MP3 downloads/streaming,
software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys and jewelry (Ungar, 2014). The
company also produces consumer electronics–notably, Amazon Kindle e–book readers, Fire tablets,
Fire TV and Fire Phone – and is a major provider of cloud computing services (Ungar, 2014).
The company was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezoz. In 1994, Bezos left his employment as vice–
president of D. E. Shaw & Co., a Wall Street firm, and moved to Seattle to begin work on a business
plan for what would eventually become Amazon.com (Allenby, 2013). Bezos selected the name
Amazon by looking through the dictionary, and settled on "Amazon" because it was a place that was
"exotic and different" just as he planned for his store to be; the Amazon river, he noted was by far
the "biggest" river in the world, and he planned to make his store the biggest in the world (Allenby,
2013).
In July 1995, the company began service and sold its first book on Amazon.com (Allenby, 2013). In
just four months of operation, Amazon.com became a very popular site on the Web, making high
marks on several Internet

Canadian Senate Reform
The legislative branch of the Canadian government is divided between an upper house, the Senate,
and a lower house, the House of Commons. This system is known as a bicameral legislature, and is
a feature of many governments. In Canada, much of the legislative and executive power lies in the
House of Commons, and by extension the Prime Minister. The Senate, however, exists in its current
form primarily for the purpose of legislative review. Despite the Senate's seemingly negligible role,
or perhaps because of it, it is the "most criticized institution of government in Canada" (Franks,
1988). While it has remained largely unchanged, movements aimed at either Senate reform or
abolition, have been essential to Canadian politics for much of recent ... Show more content on

Notwithstanding the many shortcomings of the Senate, it is an important institution that serves an
essential purpose. Although it is rarely commended publicly for its accomplishments, other public
servants and academics praise the Senate "for the breadth and quality of its investigative and
scrutiny functions in committee" (Smith, 2003). In order to understand the Senate, one must
distinguish the roles of the upper and lower houses. While the House of Commons serves the
elective function of making or unmaking government "the Senate is not a confidence chamber" and
thus serves a distinct, yet equally relevant role (Smith, 2003). The Senate, and bicameralism more
broadly, was instituted as a constraint on government. Its justification "rests on obstruction: rather
than empower, it restrains government" (Smith, 2003). This impediment to the unchecked power of
the House of Commons justifies the preservation of the Senate as an institution. While some
consider the Senate unnecessary or redundant, it is an essential element of Canadian government.
However, despite its significance, it is not particularly well liked and some consider it to be the
"most criticized institution of government in Canada" (Frank, 1988). For over sixty years, the issue
of Senate reform or abolition has been inherent to Canadian political discourse (Frank, 1988). Given
the importance of the Senate in Canadian

Roosevelt and Isolationism
From Isolationism to War
Patrick Williams
Dr. B.G. McDonald HIE 366 15 April 2011
On 7 December 1941, shortly after seven in the morning, Japanese airmen, amidst the cries of
"Banzai", commenced the bombing of Pearl Harbour, leaving them to wonder if the Americans had
ever heard of the 1904 surprise attack on the Russian Naval base at Port Arthur. In less than twenty–
four hours after the Japanese aggression, United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt would
address the congress:
Yesterday, December 7, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy – the United States of America was
suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.... I ask that the

Hull based his assumptions on the fact that if countries could trade freely their economies would
become interdependent that they could not risk going to war.[17] While his immediate hopes were
dashed as a result of FDR's bombshell telegram at the 1933 London Conference, Hull was able to
extract from the Congress Reciprocal Trade Agreement Act in 1934.[18] Hull's multilateral plans
were tempered by the FDR administrations's preference towards a bilateral agreements and
nationalistic policies. It is not surprising that FDR's policy reflected a tendency towards nationalist
posture. Considering the recent past, historical precedence, public opinion and an influential
isolationist senate governmental policies reflected the rejection of Wilson's idealism. The factors
contributing to American isolationism are varied and at times controversial. Consider political
scientist Samuel Lubell's thesis that ethnic minorities were the impetus for interwar isolationism.
[19] Lubell argues that Americans of German, Irish, Scandinavian, and Italian origin, for a variety of
reasons, felt embittered over the outcome of World War I, and reacted strongly against Democratic
attempts to an international approach to world affairs (which would be decidedly pro–British and
anti–German, anti–Italian).[20] However, it is commonly asserted that: "...most historians have

Essay on John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy In November 1960, at the age of 43, John F. Kennedy became the youngest man
ever elected president of the United States. Theodore Roosevelt had become president at 42 when
President William McKinley was assassinated, but he was not elected at that age. On Nov. 22, 1963,
Kennedy was shot to death in Dallas, Tex., the fourth United States president to die by an assassin's
bullet. Kennedy was the nation's first Roman Catholic president. He was inaugurated in January
1961, succeeding Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He defeated the Republican
candidate, Vice–President Richard M. Nixon, by little more than 100,000 votes. It was one of the
closest elections in the nation's history. Although Kennedy and his vice– ... Show more content on

Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Robert, Jean, and Edward (called Teddy). All were born in Brookline,
Mass., a suburb of Boston. Training Pays Off Joseph Kennedy, Sr., set up a million–dollar trust fund
for each of his children. This freed them from future financial worry and allowed them to devote
their lives to public good, if they desired. As the children grew, their parents stressed the importance
of competitive spirit. One of their father's favorite mottoes was: "Second place is a loser." The drive
to win was deeply embedded in the children, and they never did anything halfheartedly. Their
parents were careful to neglect neither the intellectual nor the physical development of the children.
As they grew older, the children would eat their evening meals in two groups, divided by age. Mr.
and Mrs. Kennedy ate at both meals. This allowed them to discuss subjects which were of interest to
each group. All the children attended dancing school while very young, and all, with the exception
of Rosemary, loved sports activities. Rosemary did not take part in rough–and–tumble play. The
other children, however, thrived on it. Even when they were adults, one of their favorite pastimes
was a rousing and often bruising game of touch football. On pleasant days, Mrs.

Panama Canal

  • 1. Panama Canal The Panamá Canal is a man–made 48–mile waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. The idea of creating a water passage across the famous isthmus of Panama to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans dates back to at least the 1500s to 1600s , when Charles the king of spain t tapped his regional governor to survey a route along the Chagres River. This route at the time seemed as if it was not going to work out well but ended up being one of the most important trading canals in all of history in the last five centuries. The men behind the Suez Canal and Eiffel Tower were convicted in connection with failed effort to build a canal. There were a few nations that would go ahead and try to build the panama canal but they did not succeed. French company headed by Ferdinand de Lesseps, a former diplomat who developed Egypt's Suez Canal, began digging a canal across Panama. The project was plagued by poor planning, engineering problems and tropical diseases that killed thousands of workers. • 5. Compare And Contrast Essay On John F Kennedy Joshuwa Shelton Professor Lowe Modern America Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy: compared lives and deaths November 22, 1963, Dallas Texas, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy rode along the streets of Dallas, Texas in an open top motorcade. The president's vehicle turns onto ELM ST. passing the Texas School Book Depository. When the limousine turned onto ELM ST. Nellie Connally turned to look at President Kennedy and said, "You sure cant say that Dallas doesn't love you, Mr. President." Ironically, a few moments later President Kennedy was shot, and the waving stopped. The cheering turned into panic. Fear and confusion filled the eyes of everyone. A similar thing happened to his brother Robert (Bobby) Francis Kennedy. On June 5, 1968, after RFK won the Democratic primary in California, an assassin or multiple ones shot RFK as he passed through the pantry of the Ambassador Hotel. The two brothers died in their strive to change the world through politics. However, their deaths were not mere coincidences or random acts of violence. The two assassinations contained a history and events that led up to the deaths. May 29, 1917 John Fitzgerald Kennedy emerged into the world to a wealthy and politically prominent family in Brookline, Massachusetts. • 7. Unfair Electoral System In Canada Canadian Problem 1: Unfair Electoral System The main reason why this system is unfair is because each riding is won by the candidate who receives the most votes, even if that candidate receives less than half of the constituency. Therefore, it is possible for a political party to win a majority of seats in the House of Commons. A disadvantage of FPTP voting is that a small increase in the number of votes a party's candidate receives results in a larger increase in the number of seats that party's candidate wins. For example, in the 2011 federal election the Conservative Party received 39.62% of the total votes but won 54% of the seats, while the NDP captured 30.63% of the total votes, but received only 33.12% seats. Smaller parties are affected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that the Canadian Senate would have to be elected by the citizens, the senate would need to be equal and effective in their terms. The implementation of a senate which is elected rather than appointed would ensure that representatives are more responsive to the public. It would also give the Senate the authority to exercise the powers given to it by the Canadian constitution. Any political institution can obtain formal and legal powers, but if the public does not want them to use it, then these powers may not be exercised. Currently, the senate has 104 seats, which are divided into 4 divisions. Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and the Western provinces each share 24 seats. Newfoundland has 6 seats, Yukon and Northwest Territories each have 1. Under the triple E senate, there would be 6 representatives from each and every province. This would create a new 62 member senate which would be elected at the same time as Members of Parliament. The principle of equality means that every province would be equally represented in the Senate regardless of its population. The idea of equal representation arises when provinces like Ontario are compared smaller provinces such as Alberta. Since Ontario's population is much bigger, it could automatically become the majority in the House of Commons. Other provinces cannot have the same powers as Ontario. With equal ... • 9. Canada Should Not Re-Open The Constitution The story of the Canadian Constitution is a long and rocky one. It began in 1864 during the Charlottetown conference in 1864, lead to the implementation of the British North America Act in 1867, before finally being patriated in Canada in 1982 (Dodek 2013, 21, 28). However, it was patriated without the signature of Quebec, putting the future of Canada in peril. Future attempts to open the constitution were messy, and ultimately failures, but there are still some who think Canada should give one more kick at the can (Dodek 2013, 31). The paper will argue that Canada as a country should not re–open the constitution. The paper will be organized in the following way. First, it will look at the two historical attempts to open the constitution, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is clear that the current system does not work, and some sort of reform is needed, but it does not necessarily have to be the structural reform that requires constitutional amendments to be made. While some may say it is necessary to create an elected senate, there are other options to give the Senate more legitimacy. Just because a body is appointed does not mean it cannot have a measure of popular support. Take for instance the Supreme Court of Canada, which is an appointed body that is wildly respected, and the reason they are respected are because they are professionals who perform a crucial role in society. A better class of senate could be achieved by changing the process to appoint senators by cutting down on patronage and partisan appointments to give it more legitimacy (Crowley Et al 2014, 13). In a similar vein of creating a senate that is not beholden to political parties, and their masters, making it a more independent body is to continue along the route that Primer Justin Trudeau started in 2014, by kicking out Liberal Senators from his caucus (Cudmore 2014). By creating independent senators, and attempting to make them the new normal it would make the senate a true chamber of sober second thought. These are just two proposals to help the senate, but they provide a wider idea of what is possible beyond the few suggestions the Harper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Why Was A Reformed Senate? Senate reform has been a much–debated topic in Canada. Since the early 1970s, there have been at least 28 major proposals for constitutional senate reform. All of them have failed. But once again, thanks to the senate expenses scandal, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and his government have proposed yet another reform. Would a reformed senate solve the current issues of the senate or would it make it worse? This paper would discuss why a reformed senate would bring about more problems than it will solve. The construct of my paper is basic. Firstly, I would be looking at the Canadian senate, its roles and functions, and present and past problems. Next, I would look at some senatorial reform proposals and what these various reforms all look to change. I shall conclude this paper by providing my view on why a reformed senate would bring up more issues than it would solve. The senate is viewed as a reflective body. It is often called the 'chamber of sober second thought'. The Canadian senate is still one of the only ones in modern democracy not to have undergone senatorial reform. This makes for the Canadian senate to "represent and embody some of the most anti democratic features of representative assemblies" (Docherty pp.27). The senate is the upper house of the parliament. It has 105 seats, distributed as fairly as possible amongst the various provinces. Senators are appointed and this is the major reason for people wanting senatorial reform, however the Canadian senate have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Canadian Governing System is not Fair or Democratic... There are Canadian citizens who thought that the Canadian government we have is perfect, citizens who believed that every aspect of the government was truly democratic, and citizens who believe that government could do no wrong. Truly this group of believers has been living a lie. In our Canadian system of government, large aspects within are far from democratic and need to be changed. Liberal–minded people will cry out for a change in order for government to serve the people better, and on the other hand the more conservative thinkers will argue that no change is needed because our government is efficient and considerate. However, our voting system, our Senate, and the power vested to the Prime Minister are far from democratic, do not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was obvious that he would make votes in favour of Chretien's aims. However, even with his appointed position he only very rarely showed up for work, ignoring his basic obligations as Senator. Even when the whole of the government was in outrage at this incompetence, they could not legally kick him out of office. There will inevitably be more incidents like these unless the Senate is reformed. Thankfully, there are several possible ways to reform the Senate as to make it a more democratic institute. The Senate, undemocratic as it is, obviously needs some tweaks and changes in the system to make it more so. The Canadian Senate should reform entirely into a triple–E Senate (Elected, Efficient, Equal). In the Triple E Senate, Senators should be elected by the voters instead of appointed, the efficient distribution of power towards the Senate to balance out the power. This would create a more democratic and fairer Senate that would better serve the needs of the citizens it represents. While the Triple–E Senate may not get things done nearly as quickly as the current Senate, it would at least make the right decisions for everyone. While the Senate is a major blight upon Canadian government, it is not the only one. The Canadian Prime Minister presents the illusion that this so–called democratic Canada is run by the will of the people and attempts to maintain this image, yet the truth is that the power stays ... • 19. Why Did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor Research Paper Why Did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor? The morning of December 7th, 1941 was calm and quiet on the island of Pearl Harbor. A gentle breeze was blowing, and the only thing one could hear was the gentle crashing of ocean waves. The people looking up at the bright blue sky would have no idea that this day would later live in infamy. On this day, hundreds of Japanese aircrafts and submarines suddenly attacked the island. Numerous U.S. weapons and ships were destroyed, and over two thousand people were killed in the attack. Japan attacked the U.S. because of embargo on oil, to create a new order, and because of the fleet expansion. One of many reasons why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor was because of the U.S. oil embargo. In comments at Imperial Conference in 1941, Japanese Prime Minister said, "Two years from now, we will have no petroleum for military use. ... Baby boomers are very different from their predecessors; they are living longer, maintain lifestyles that are more active and are generally better able to continue working than in the past. The real challenge is the reality of how the insufficient number of young people will fill the vacancies left by the aging workforce. Mandatory retirement may be unavoidable, as older workers are forced from the work field to create more vacancies for new younger employees. According to most seniors, it is an unfair practice and does not take into account if the person wants to retire; it also does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, to accommodate the changing abilities of older workers, employers need to re–design the job as well. Instead of having to hire new younger workers who are not as skilled or trained in the job, there is a chance it would benefit employers to accommodate older workers' needs. Functionality and not chronological age must become the prime criteria in all employment practices. As baby boomers exit the work force, letting people work longer could help to curb a predicted skilled and experienced labor shortage in many occupations. Employers need to revise human resource plans to reflect the possibility of more employees working past their previously expected retirement date as well as change testing and performance evaluations to reflect the reality of an aging workforce. Organizations need to develop programs to maximize the contributions of older workers, particularly in the areas of adult learning and flexible work arrangements; it may encourage older workers who wish to continue working. Labor force participation rates of older ages has been on the rise slightly since 1970 and is projected to rise more in the coming years. The planned composition of a Carrier Air Wing (CVW) consists of 3 FA–18E/F, 1 F/A–18G, 1 F–35C, 1 E–2D, and 2 MH–60 squadrons. The scope of this research is limited to the need to protect the carrier strike group from attacking aircraft and striking ground and sea based targets on the Chinese coast. Each FA–18E/F squadron consists of 12 aircraft that have the ability to perform both the air–to–air and air–to–ground role as well as perform airborne refueling. The requirement to perform airborne refueling is extremely important as the S–3 Viking was removed from service in 2009. • 27. The Usefulness Of The Canadian Senate David C. Docherty's scholarly journal responds to the continual controversy and debate of the usefulness of the Canadian senate in 2002. Docherty's article does an amazing job at analyzing the current Canadian senate and argues that the senate is a failing Canadian institution because of two democratic deficiencies: the undemocratic nature of senator selection and the inability of senators to represent provinces properly (45). These two features of why the senate is a failing Canadian institution can be compared to how Rand Dyck defines democracy in Canadian Politics: Critical Approaches. Docherty looks at several previous senate reforms and answers the question of why these senate reforms failed, in doing so Docherty lays down a framework for a possible successful senate reform but acknowledges the obstacles. Docherty does a very good job at accessing the problem of the senate, accessing the problem of previous reforms, and suggesting a plausible type of reform for the senate. This provides the reader with the knowledge of why the Canadian senate is a failing institution but also the possible solutions of how the senate can be reformed in order to maximize its democratic potential. Although, Docherty fails to provide an exact reform that needs to be taken, he just draws upon other failures and hypothesis that this may be the right solution for reform. • 32. The Importance Of Political Culture In Canada "The spirit of democracy cannot be imposed from without. It has to come from within". (Gandhi, Coward, H. G. pg. 31, paragraph 1). A democratic country is one where it listens to its people and considers their interests rather than imposing their own will on others. Political culture is a term which is used in social science and it means to have a shared set of beliefs, feeling and values about the political system and that connects the citizens and the government. Canadians value peace, order and a good government. They are more of an individualist instead of collectivist which identifies how Canadians like to work. They are also respective of authority however the status effect in organizations is very low in Canada. Canadians are critically egalitarian and they care very much about equality, rights and freedoms. Regionalism is the diversity of geographic and economic concerns that are important to politics. This is also part of dualism because of the relationship between the two major cultures in Canada, Anglophone and francophone. Both of these are protected by the federal law. These factors immensely shape the political culture of Canada. Public opinion impacts the society's political culture. In terms of the reform option, as a country, we absolutely cannot afford to abolish the Senate, as it serves as, and is meant to be, a body of un–biased "economic and social élite", who are capable of making/approving decisions to benefit the citizens of Canada, rather than the House of Commons, which makes decisions by majority, and in their own interest. The Senate is meant to play a neutral role, to be the final judge to make the un–biased, informed decisions. Sometimes, the Senate has taken on other roles, which it performs and works with very effectively. In fairness to them, these often do not receive much media coverage, increasing the public perception that Senators do very little. For example, the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Tech released a report on the Health Care system, a month before the Romanow Report on Human Health Resources Planning. As stated in the Constitution of our nation, Canada would be governed through a Parliamentary system, with both an upper and lower house of legislature. The lower house, the House of Commons, would include elected members from across the country. Conversely, the upper house, the Senate, according to Section 24 of the Constitution Act (1867), states: "The Governor General shall... summon qualified Persons to the Senate; and... every Person so summoned shall become... a Member of the Senate."[1] This has amounted to almost 800 Canadians being appointed to the Senate since Confederation. In retrospect, in order for the Senate to achieve any sort of democratic status, the federal chamber should be comprised of elected members. Most criticism towards the Canadian Senate is directed at the ineffectiveness of the upper house.[13] The Constitution states that the Senate shall act as a 'chamber of sober second thought' from the perceived more radical lower house.[14] However, the Senate has proven to be useless in this process, and does not act as a voice of reason or representative opinion. The argument that the Senate is more reflective of the national population than the House of Commons definitely doesn't come cheap. Because Senators are not elected they don't represent the public interest and therefore shear no accountability. This lack of accountability allows for the chamber's activities to become autonomous and secretive. Ultimately, the citizens of Canada are left in the dark in regards to the performance and activities of the Senate. At the same time, when exploring the link between the upper and lower houses, it is rational to say that the Senate serves no purpose in the Canadian political system. As Senators come into power through recommendation of the Prime Minister, it is uncommon for the chamber to disagree with the government. Therefore, Senator appointment does ... At this same time, Rome was dangerous because of extensive civil war. Augustus' great uncle, Julius Caesar, was involved in this war. Augustus' father was married to Atia, who was the daughter of Julia, Caesar's sister. Later on in Augustus' life, Caesar's distant family relationship was idle to how Augustus came into power. Why Has Regionalism Developed In Canada Regionalism as a whole is the concept that distinct geographic areas foster a unique and relatively autonomous identity outside of the national framework in politics; essentially individuals ferment regional identities through the relationships and communities that develop because of a shared locality and economic situation. In particular, Canada has developed regionalism ever since its constitution was drafted and consequently it has been a dominant force in the political landscape/activity and dialogue of the country. In turn, scholars have discussed the actors behind regionalism in Canada and there are three dominant explanations and mediums as to why: federal institutions, federal policies, and the staples theory. In this essay, I will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Historian Harold Innis developed the staples theory which postulated that Canada's economic development was reliant on the succession of resource exports rather than manufacturing. Furthermore, this doctrine illustrated notions of dependence in Canada combined with interregional exploitation between inner and outer Canada. The staples theory asserted that a relationship between a "metropolis" and "hinterland" existed in Canada and reflected the power dynamics of Canadian economic and political society. The metropolis has the manufacturing sector and does well if it is competitive to other metropolises and subsequently then has manufacturing jobs. On the other hand, the hinterland is a rural and resource rich area that does exceedingly well economically if it has the relevant resource and consequently grows in political strength. Toronto–Ottawa–Montreal triangle obviously constitutes the metropolises of Canada with the largest concentration of corporate head offices in the Toronto area combined with a substantial manufacturing nucleus in the Greater Toronto Region. Stakeholder Analysis The triple aim of PPACA to promote accessible, high quality and cost efficient care involves large number of reforms that influence all the segments associated with healthcare industry. These reforms are affecting various stakeholders such as hospitals, physicians, and patients to varying degrees and therefore policymakers need to consider independent stakeholder priorities along with the impact on society and cost involved in order to achieve this triple aim. The Affordable Care Act introduces payment reforms for individual physicians and for larger, organized health care systems, ranging from bundled payments to payment adjustments for hospital–acquired conditions. The lowest recorded was 59,495 hectares of land distributed in 2009 because of the uncertainties brought about by the transition to implementing Republic Act No. 9700. The second lowest was 97,795 hectares, recorded in 2003. Last year alone, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) distributed 111,889 hectares of land nationwide, which is slightly higher than the 107,180 hectares distributed in 2010. The DAR completed the acquisition of 18,414 landholdings with a total area of 120,286 hectares for a gross accomplishment rate of 60 percent. Of this area, 8,397 hectares are exclusions from the same landholding and retention areas of landowners. Thus, 111,889 hectares were actually distributed to 63,755 agrarian reform beneficiaries. The total area that is still to be distributed (called the Land Acquisition and Distribution or LAD balance) totals 961,974 hectares from 107,639 landholdings. Around 93.58 percent of the LAD balance (900,188 hectares) are private agricultural land; almost 85 percent of the LAD Balance (816,491 hectares) are LBP–compensable. Therein lies the challenge. This paper talks about the different reforms under PPACA, aimed at introducing payment variations based on quality of care such as, Hospital Value Based Purchasing (VBP) program, improvements to different quality reporting programs, payment adjustments for hospital acquired conditions (HAC), reduction of hospital readmission rates (HRRP), testing for ... The main aim behind PPACA is to improve healthcare quality and accessibility, at the same time keeping it cost efficient. To facilitate its goal PPACA is trying to achieve the cost effectiveness through reducing the Medicare price growth and regulating the quantity of care by encouraging evidence based practices. This new legislation supports the healthcare system in which the goals of both provider and the patients are better aligned with value as opposed to the quantity of services. This was yet another failed attempt to please Quebec, but it only made things worse. With tensions remaining high between the French and English Canadians, there is still no news of a third attempt, fearing that history will repeat itself. Canada can't afford another failure; many think that it will push Quebec off the edge of become independent. Even though there are a lot of Canadians who can't forget the past of Quebec, there are also many who don't understand why this day is so significant. Federally, Trudeau was replaced by Brian Mulroney. In Quebec, Moderate Liberal Robert Bourassa was replaced by Rene Levesque. Mulroney promised when he got elected, that he would bring Quebec into the Constitution (the supreme law in Canada). He held many meetings to talk about the constitutional problems. In April 1987, there were constitutional changes made that satisfied Quebec's concerns and both the PM and 10 provincial premiers agreed to these changes. This happened at Meech Lake, near Ottawa. Many Canadian citizens are unsatisfied with the fact that the Senate is not elected. How are citizens to be sure that they are being properly represented when they are not able to choose who represents them? Although the Senate is an integral part of the governmental system, many Canadians are leaning towards the idea to completely abolish the Senate. The credible, David C. • 70. An Analysis of Political Elitism Essay An Analysis of Political Elitism It is easy to believe that the middle–class working individual, whether he or she be white collar or blue collar, wields little political power except for during an election. It is also easy to think that we don't have true democracy; political representation elected by the people, for the people, and controlled by these people. This is an ideology that is often worn out. Instead, these elected representatives are controlled by political élites: high–ranking political "gladiators", the media, lobbyists, and, though it may not seem evident, big business. It is, in essence, commonly believed by most. Some reasons why political élites at times dominate government and who these groups are will be examined in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From a sociological point of view, elitism deals with class structures. Marx describes these class structures and what makes certain individuals "High Class" or "important". "The separation of ownership from the management and control of industry" (Penguin Books, 1994, p.58). Marxists see political élites as "bad guys" – theoretically, it is because they represent a small portion of the population and are believed to control most of the political power and money. However, Plato's Republic offers a different standpoint. In his work, political élites are seen as "good guys" – wise, virtuous, and knowledgeable. It is difficult to define elitism, however. The above definition, first and foremost, deals with financial status. What's more, Plato's opinions and definitions of elites are blatantly out of date. Though political élites are predominately high–class and wealthy, it does not explain interest groups and lobbyists. The men and women in these groups are, on the whole, not particularly "rich" or "important". What makes them truly important or powerful is that they alter public opinion (The media works in the same way, however this will be discussed later). The idea that elites shape public opinion applies to all elites as well. Not to mention the fact that the majority of Canadians have negative attitudes toward political elites. • 72. The Senate Should Be Abolished Of The Senate The Senate plays a key role in tandem with the House of Commons, in the operation of Canada's government, some people think that the Senate should be abolished; however without the Senate, "The right to bear arms" could become true for Canada. The Senate should be reformed; abolishing or keeping the Senate at its current state would be unjust. The current Senate is not elected, effective, nor equal. If the Senate is kept at its current state, it will continue to operate fine, however the Senate can be much more effective at what it does if it gets amended. Currently the Senate is not elected, equal, nor efficient. People who comprise the Senate are selected by the governor general on the advice of the Prime Minister, so those selected most likely will act in good intention towards the Prime Minister. The Senate, unlike the House was designed to represent Canada's regions, however it over–represents some provinces at the expense of others. For example currently, Quebec and Ontario each have 24 seats, the same amount of seats as the four Western provinces as a whole. Atlantic Canada, with a mere 7% of the population, holds a unproportional 29% of the seats. Canadians deserve laws that are fair and free of errors, and the Senate contributes to that. The Senate's job is to foster national unity, however currently they act in the interest of themselves and the Prime Minister rather than in the interest of the people. Abolishing the Senate is country suicide. If there is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Canadian Senate Reform The legislative branch of the Canadian government is divided between an upper house, the Senate, and a lower house, the House of Commons. This system is known as a bicameral legislature, and is a feature of many governments. In Canada, much of the legislative and executive power lies in the House of Commons, and by extension the Prime Minister. The Senate, however, exists in its current form primarily for the purpose of legislative review. Despite the Senate's seemingly negligible role, or perhaps because of it, it is the "most criticized institution of government in Canada" (Franks, 1988). While it has remained largely unchanged, movements aimed at either Senate reform or abolition, have been essential to Canadian politics for much of recent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Notwithstanding the many shortcomings of the Senate, it is an important institution that serves an essential purpose. Although it is rarely commended publicly for its accomplishments, other public servants and academics praise the Senate "for the breadth and quality of its investigative and scrutiny functions in committee" (Smith, 2003). In order to understand the Senate, one must distinguish the roles of the upper and lower houses. While the House of Commons serves the elective function of making or unmaking government "the Senate is not a confidence chamber" and thus serves a distinct, yet equally relevant role (Smith, 2003). The Senate, and bicameralism more broadly, was instituted as a constraint on government. Its justification "rests on obstruction: rather than empower, it restrains government" (Smith, 2003). This impediment to the unchecked power of the House of Commons justifies the preservation of the Senate as an institution. While some consider the Senate unnecessary or redundant, it is an essential element of Canadian government. However, despite its significance, it is not particularly well liked and some consider it to be the "most criticized institution of government in Canada" (Frank, 1988). For over sixty years, the issue of Senate reform or abolition has been inherent to Canadian political discourse (Frank, 1988). Given the importance of the Senate in Canadian ... In less than twenty– four hours after the Japanese aggression, United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt would address the congress: Yesterday, December 7, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.... Hull based his assumptions on the fact that if countries could trade freely their economies would become interdependent that they could not risk going to war.[17] While his immediate hopes were dashed as a result of FDR's bombshell telegram at the 1933 London Conference, Hull was able to extract from the Congress Reciprocal Trade Agreement Act in 1934.[18] Hull's multilateral plans were tempered by the FDR administrations's preference towards a bilateral agreements and nationalistic policies. It is not surprising that FDR's policy reflected a tendency towards nationalist posture. Considering the recent past, historical precedence, public opinion and an influential isolationist senate governmental policies reflected the rejection of Wilson's idealism. The factors contributing to American isolationism are varied and at times controversial. Consider political scientist Samuel Lubell's thesis that ethnic minorities were the impetus for interwar isolationism. [19] Lubell argues that Americans of German, Irish, Scandinavian, and Italian origin, for a variety of reasons, felt embittered over the outcome of World War I, and reacted strongly against Democratic attempts to an international approach to world affairs (which would be decidedly pro–British and anti–German, anti–Italian).[20] However, it is commonly asserted that: "...most historians have found it ...
