Essay About Trade
Mr. Jefferson
Ah, we have a tradesman on our hands! Trades seem to be frowned upon within today's youth
culture, but I look at it as a step up in a simple man's game.
JUSTIN
I don't intend on entering a trade.
MR. JEFFERSON
I'm sorry, I don't believe I follow. If You don't intend to go to university – something that judging by
your grades is unlikely anyways – but also don't intend to go to college nor enter a trade...what is it
you intend to do?
JUSTIN
I don't intend to do anything.
MR. JEFFERSON
Well you must have some idea of what it is you want to do with your life.
JUSTIN
Not knowing what I want to do with my life is the one thing I do know.

Essay on Billy
Billy – Original Writing It was late November. The leaves (what was left of them) were a multitude
of colors, reds, oranges, and yellows. The air was cool, but not as bad as what was to come.
Pittsburgh usually has a good autumn but a horrible winter. It was the day before Thanksgiving. I
was sitting in Trigonometry counting down the minutes until the school day would be over. I still
had around four or five hours. It was only the beginning of the day, but my excitement was growing.
Of course I was excited. We were going to have extra days off from school. What more can a girl
want? So there I was in Trig doing nothing because my teacher did not make us do anything the day
before a break. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So we went back to work. I was working to repaint the haunted house's maze. That was not easy. I
did not know the way around it, so it made the job harder and longer. That summer I think I covered
myself in black paint. All of our hard work paid off, for we had a great season and raised a lot of
money for the Make–a–wish foundation. After that, Billy and I hardly spoke. A few months roll by
and I decide to call him. We started to hang out again. It was if we didn't lose any time at all. We
tried the dating thing, but we decided that being friends was better for us. We would go to the mall
just so we could eat at the Japanese place. Their chicken teriyaki was to die for. The taste was so
amazing. It was never too hot, and it had just the right amount of flavor. Our friendship was perfect,
for a while. We got into an argument right the start of November. The funny thing is I don't even
remember what the argument was about. We didn't talk to each other for a week. He called me but
neither of us apologized. I only wish I had. Fast forward a week. The whole school day I was
wondering about what Lauren said to me. I kept wondering, "Is Billy really dead?" I could not
concentrate on anything else. It was if my mind had erased everything except that thought. Sixth

Rock And Roll Influence On Society
There is a common misperception in society today that the roots of rock and roll began in the 1950s
with Elvis Presley shaking his hips. Few know that the roots of rock and roll actually go all the way
back to slavery. Rock and roll first got its start with the blues and has since evolved over time into
the rock and roll we now know of today. As each new band and artist would come along, they would
go on to add their own sound to the mix, and once it was introduced it would never be taken away.
The influence of blues artists, such as Mamie Smith, and hillbilly (country and folk) artists such as
Hank Williams, could be heard in the music of 1950s rockers Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley, and
their influence could be heard in one of the most famous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By the end of World War II, the British Invasion had begun and bands such as The Rolling Stones
were becoming what is often seen as the epitome of rock and roll. Often thought of as the "bad
boys" of the British Invasion, their songs contained more messages about sex, drugs and rock and
roll instead of inequality, oppression and the troubles and issues people face. However, they carried
on the legacy of the blues nonetheless. Their performances had the influence of the likes of Chuck
Berry's unabashed performances, with Mick Jagger's attitude and posing. Although it is not like
them to do political lyrics, a song that propels them to stardom is the song "Gimme Shelter" which
is often interpreted to be a song about war. The repetition that is often found in blues is apparent in
"Gimme Shelter as well with the lyrics "war, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot

Radley Character Development
To Kill a Mockingbird Question 1
Even though the first eleven chapters of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird may seem tedious and
pointless to some, I find them to be charming and compelling because of the character development
that happens during them. The subplot of Boo Radley especially helped to show the development of
the characters. This subplot displayed the personalities of Jem, Scout, and Dill as it progressed. It
also created many events which serve as reference points for the development of these characters
throughout the book, such as when Jem is dared to touch Radley's house and views that as true
courage. "In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare." (p. 13) Later on Jem is shown that true
courage is, after being told to go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety–eight pounds of her. According
to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew." (p.
112) Another example of character growth during these first eleven chapters is when the Finches go
to visit Aunt Alexandra and Uncle Jack. During the visit Scout has an encounter with her cousin
Frances that ends in a fight. Later when Uncle Jack talks to Scout about why the fight happened she
ends up teaching him a lesson about children. This shows character development in both Scout, as it
shows she is now able to tell her idea and stand up for it rather than just accept someone else's, and
in Uncle Jack, as he now knows how to deal with situation such as this where listening to just one
side of a story can be unfair for others. "Well, In the first place you never stopped to gimme a
chance to tell you my side of it – you just lit right into me. When Jem an' I fuss Atticus doesn't ever
just listen to Jem's side of it, he hears mine too, an' in the second place you told me never to use
words like that except in ex–extreme provocation, and Francis provocated me enough to knock his
block off–" (Scout, p. 86) To conclude, I enjoyed the first eleven chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird
because of the large amount of character development that made me relate to the characters, making

My Favorite Music Essay
Teenage years are the times for new experiences and music was no different as the experience
marked with great memories of music that is very nostalgic and can be attached to moments good or
bad that make us reminisce when we hear the music of our child hood. I am Mexican and my
teenage years I spent in Mexico until I was sixteen when my family migrated to the united states
however I didn't really understood English I can honestly say that I like Rock En Espanol and would
not hesitate to say that it is my favorite genre of music when I was a teenager, I will try my best to
share my favorite music as I reminisce on some great music in my past. As a teenager growing up in
Mexico I wasn't really interested in listening to music, as my interest were sports and television. The
musical influences that I can recall in my early childhood, were those of my parents. Who would
listen to Corridos and Rancheras, which were a type of folk Mexican revolutionary music, they
would sing about the struggles in life during the Mexican civil war. As I grew up the type of music
my friends listen to were Cumbias Colombianas and Rock En Espanol those were my early
memories of music which I still listen and enjoy today. I would listen to Rock En Espanol artist like
Café Tacuba, Caifanes, Mana, Maldita Vecindad, Enanitos Verdes, and Fabulosos Cadillacs. I began
listening more to the lyrics and the sound of the music for example, Maldita Vecindad has a Rock
sound that evolved into a Ska sound.

To Kill A Mockingbird Reflection
Throughout their lives, individuals learn many valuable lessons that help them to grow and mature
as human beings. This also means being cooperative with people. The prominent novel, "To Kill a
Mockingbird", by Harper Lee portrays a story written from a girl named Scout. Scout is in her
childhood and faces many hardships, including the trial of Tom Robinson and her dad being the
defendant. One prominent theme that Lee includes is how individuals must see different
perspectives putting an end to bigotry and the tension between others.
Atticus Finch is a great example of an individual who instructs his children, Jem and Scout, precious
life lessons about accepting all people. In chapter eleven Atticus tries to explain to Jem, why
different people have a different view on things by saying, "She had her own views about things, a
lot different from mine, maybe... son, I told you that if you hadn't lost your head I'd have made you
go read to her... she was the bravest person I knew" (Lee 128). This conveys that Atticus wanted Jem
to understand and accept her rather than just judging her. Sometimes getting to know people isn't so
bad because you never really understand them until you enlighten a person. Not only does Atticus
takes his time to understand Mrs. Dubose, but he also takes his time out to defend Tom Robinson.
Scout is troubled from the rumors of her dad being the defendant of Tom Robinson. Lee explains
why Atticus defends Tom Robinson despite of the ridicule when she writes "... the main one is, is I
didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this country in the legislature, I
couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again" (Lee 86). Atticus accepted the case because
he suggests that his morals for children and others are far greater than his reputation. Although the
people in Maycomb is racist, Atticus is there for Tom Robinson and being a role model for his
children to accept people for who they are.
Atticus attempts to teach his kids about seeing things in other people's point of view to eliminate
prejudice because he knows that the town is full of bigotry and racism. Atticus teaches Scout a life
lesson, which he applies to real life situations, in the hopes of shaping her

A Dream In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun
Raisin in the Sun Essay Have you ever noticed one person with a dream, or passion that truly
deserves it but always struggles to reach that dream? Not just everyday humans experience this, but
characters within readings even face challenges like ours. The story A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine
Hansberry tells of an African American family striving to reach individual, and shared dreams,
though one character preservers for dozens of years before finally reaping success. Mama's dream is
the most deserving because she has suffered the longest, carried her family up to this point, all while
remaining honorable to her personal beliefs. As stated before, Mama has struggled and day–dreamed

Not authentic in the form of physically real, but regarding the genuine and honorable side that we
saw possibly the most often from her. Wrapping up the first scene in fact, Mama turned to both
verbal and physical forms to defend herself after slapping Beneatha she calmly brought herself to
say "Repeat after me– in my mother's house there is still a God." (I. ii) Although the physical swing
may have been excessive, Mama stood up for her religious beliefs and simply would not accept the
disrespect from a younger family member due to her devoted faith. Leaping all the way back to
scene three Mama's comment is humorous in some ways when she states "My son said we was
going to move and there ain't nothing left for me to say. You know how these young folks is
nowadays, mister. Can't do a thing with 'em. Goodbye." (II. iii) The humor in this is that Mama is
kind to strangers and welcoming to any, but when this man attempted to segregate an area and
remove them from being near him she made sure the man understood how she felt. Countless times
in the story we see her stick up to others but when she acts as if she can't control Walter, I personally
laughed because I can imagine the snooty rich man with the briefcase and Mama in her powerful
stance acting as if her hands were tied, allowing Walter to act childish to drive away the rich man.

Examples Of Justice In To Kill A Mockingbird
In the story To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper develops the themes of justice, morality, and ethics by
using the characters Atticus, Tom Robinson, and the snowman to represent those themes. Atticus
represents justice in the fact that he gives both sides a chance to explain the scenario and he tries to
prove everyone's innocence despite race or background. (85–86)Scout says, "Well in the first place
you never stopped to gimme a chance to tell you my side of it – you just lit right into me. When Jem
an' I fuss Atticus doesn't ever just listen to Jem's side of it, he hears mine too." Atticus also tries to
prove Tom Robinson's innocence during the trial despite the fact that Tom is black. These show that
Atticus is fair and just in his trials and thinks that all people deserve a fair trial (Shmoop Editorial

He is kind, friendly, hard working, and does what he can to help despite his disability. (195)Mr.
Gilmer says, "I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy's worked for
me eight years an' I ain't had a speck o'trouble outa him. Not a speck." This shows that he does his
work despite his disability. During the trial, Tom says he helped Mayella because she didn't have
anyone to help her. They turned his words against him so the jury would convict him, and it worked.
However, the jury would have convicted him even if they didn't turn his words against him. This
shows the morals and ethics of the town

For this assignment, I chose "The Origin of Modern Humans" by Roger Lewin as my book to read
for my book report. Roger Lewin is a British award–winning science author and writer of 20 books.
He was employed at New Scientist in London for about nine years. He went to Washington, D.C. to
write books and other pieces for science for ten years as news editor. The book by him that I chose,
in 201 pages, this book explained answers to questions like where and when modern humans first
appeared, what features distinguish modern humans, who our immediate ancestors were, and many
more. For example, the subtopics are; the African origin, the multiregional origin, the archeology of
modern humans, language and modern human origins, symbolism and ... Show more content on

However the study also says there may be other reasons why neanderthals and humans share this. In
August of 2012, a study at the University of Cambridge has tested this conclusion, hypothesising
instead that possibly the DNA found is a remainder of a common ancestor of both species.
The multiregional origin of modern humans is a scientific idea that gives reasons for the pattern of
human evolution that was suggested by Milford H. Wolpoff. Multiregional origin says that the
evolution of humans from 2.5 million years ago to the present day has been inside of one human
species, evolving into modern humans.
The book also speaks about human languages. It says that when scientists studied the sounds in
languages from around the world, they detected an ancient cue that leads to southern Africa as the
location where modern human language began. The discovery fits well with the evidence from
fossils and DNA that modern humans arose in Africa. It also suggests, but does not prove, that
modern language began only once. The discovery of such an old cue in language is shocking. Since
words change so rapidly, many linguists think that languages can't be tracked back very far in time.
The oldest language tree made so far, one from the European family, goes back 9,000 years at the
very most. For the experiment, the book speaks about apes and language. It speaks of an experiment

Covered Music Ethical Issues
Covering has become an important part of today's musical world. A practice that started many
decades ago, dating back to the 1940s and beyond, has become not only accepted but expected. It is
a complex issue; however, as it raises issues such as the acknowledgment of the covered music as
original art, the ethical questions the practice raises, and the relevance of the cover to popular music.
Artists have covered songs for many years, and the practice has expanded drastically. Some artists
cover songs performed by an artist covering other songs. Other musicians merely sample parts of a
song, using that sample to create their own work. Recently, rap musicians have even begun
producing many remixes that continue to raise ethical questions. The practice of covering is
essential to today's music despite the moral and legal issues it creates. Today's version of covering is

Vanilla Ice faced problems when he didn't pay David Bowie and Queen credit or royalties when he
sampled their music for "Ice, Ice Baby." Had he done this, his use of their base line would have been
perfectly acceptable. An example of an artist who samples properly is Kanye West. In his song
"Stronger," Kanye sampled a line from a Daft Punk song. Mr. West took all the proper steps to credit
Daft Punk which allowed him to create an extremely popular song. If Danger Mouse properly
credited both the Beatles and Jay–Z in the creation of his Grey Album, there would have been no
concerns and EMI would not have halted its distribution. Lil Wayne is an artist who creates a lot of
remixes, and in doing so he raises his own popularity and profits substantially. However he gives
complete credit to the original artist and makes sure there are no ethical concerns with his work. As
long as an artist fulfills the proper legal requirements, paying royalties and giving songwriting
credit, then there is no ethical issue with

It is my Birthday so Gimme Gimme Gimme In one day, nine hours, twenty– four minutes and nine
seconds it will be my birthday. I will be sixteen years old. I better get everything I want for my
birthday or I will throw a huge fit. It is my Birthday so I should get everything I want, since it is my
day. My parents rented out the local pool, so just me and my friends can swim. My parents also got
chipotle and orange leaf to cater my party. Everyone will be talking about it when we go back to
school. And every one will want to be my friend since I always have the best parties you know. I
invited forty of my closest friends. I wanted to invite sixty, I just have so many friends and my
parents do not understand. I have a lot of different types of friends.I have friends who hold my text
books. I have friends who I sit with at lunch. I have my soccer friends, and I am on two teams select
and school. I have friends who I only talk to when my friends are not there. So, there's a lot of
people that are my friends. Hello Mom and dad, the more people I invite the more presents I get! I
deserve a lot of presents because it's not easy being friends with so many people. Ahh! Today is the
day! My mom and I start our nail with breakfast at First watch. I got my favorite an omelette with
spinach, onion and roma tomatoes. With a large decaf coffee two shots of mocha creamer and two
packs of sugar. Even on my birthday I am not allowed to drink normal coffee. Ugh my mom is so

Motherhood
The story "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee takes place in a fictional town of Maycomb,
Alabama, this is based on Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. In the story Calpurnia is the
maid for the Finch family, because in the 1930's it was still common for negroes to work as house
servants for low pay and little respect. Calpurnia is the only present female figure in the Finch
household, which in a sense makes her the mother to Scout and Jem. Atticus and Calpurnia are both
parents to the children, but Calpurnia is more of a stickler especially since she has already had
children of her own. Cal embraces her second motherhood to do the best possible job at hoping she
can make a difference in their lives which was not present with her biological children. In the story
Scout and Calpurnia share many parallels with a mother and daughter. For instance, "She was
always ordering me out of the kitchen, asking me why I couldn't behave as well as Jem when she
knew he was older, and calling me home when I wasn't ready to come"(Lee 6). This shares many
similarities with the epic battles that mothers and children face through raising their children and
growing up, given my parents are sticklers I have been in my fair share of wars. Growing up in my
house and being at my friends' behavior, getting out of the kitchen, and getting called inside was,
and still is a vicious cycle constantly in motion enacted by our mothers and is

Comparing 'Sweat And The Gilded Six Bits'
Navin Shiwgobin CRN 1337 Professor Chance March 4, 2016 Compare and Contrasting "Sweat"
and "The Gilded Six Bits" In the short stories, "Sweat" and "The Gilded Six–bit", by Zora Neale
Hurston, both take place in her hometown of Eatonville, Florida, during the early 1900s. Eatonville
was one of the first towns founded by African Americans in the US. Because they are set in the same
town, the stories' characters speak in a broken, English dialect of the South, to reflect the era and
location in which they lived. These stories depict identical circumstances with different
consequences. They illustrate the betrayal of adultery within both of the marriages of Sykes and
Delia, from "Sweat", and Missy May and Joe from "The Gilded Six–Bits". Furthermore, ... Show

In "Sweat", Delia is absolutely terrified by the idea of snakes. Sykes knows this but that doesn't stop
him from antagonizing her with the thought. He uses a bullwhip to scare her, as it resembles a snake.
He puts it over her shoulder while she is doing work, and she reacts terrified, in which greatly
pleases Sykes. "Sykes, what you throw dat whip on me like dat? You know it would skeer me––
looks just like a snake, an' you knows how skeered Ah is of snakes." (Hurston 1) Sykes still isn't
finished with his tormenting, as he brings home a rattlesnake. This is where irony strikes, as the
same snake he used to torment Delia bites him and inevitably kills him. In "The Gilded Six Bits",
the theme of irony is present as well. With Joe's constant praise of Slemmons, this ironically
contributed to Missy's betrayal as he constantly peaked her interest about him. Joe and Missy May
dont realize that they possess something far more valuable than gold. They have each other's love,
which proves to be a very strong thing nonetheless. Missy May almost throws this away for a gold
coin, to which she finds out that it is just a gold plated half dollar. "She took it into her hands
trembling and saw that it was no gold piece. It was a gilded half–dollar." (Hurston 734) This
experience serves as a precious lesson to them both: "all that glitters is not

Persuasive Narrative Essay
It was my last memory from my class at Meadowbrook, the school's right of passage at the end of
the 8th grade year: ziplining in Costa Rica. I felt my stomach tighten as I took a step up to the first
platform, took one last deep breath, and jumped. The violent, Costa Rican air whipped around me,
spinning my body in a circle like a helicopter blade. I tirelessly squeezed the handlebar with the
rough, sandpaper gloves like my life depended on it. Ironically, at the time, I thought it did. I was
mortified. After helplessly spinning around for about a minute, I crashed into the end of the line and
nervously unhooked my harness. One down, seven to go. The next line began similarly to the first
one. I leaped off the platform hesitantly, but the wind had died down and I was able to relax. I gazed
across the seemingly endless lush, green landscapes of the Costa Rican mountain ranges in awe.
Still choke holding the handlebar, I was not comfortable in the slightest. I left the third platform just
a second quicker feeling slightly more secure in the harness. This time, I released the handlebar,
leaving my doubts and worries behind. I was about as content as I could possibly be given the
circumstances, dangling thousands of feet up in the air in the mountains, supported by a jaded
wooden rope an inch in diameter. Two summers ago, I trotted onto the 18th green, up one stroke in
the tournament. It felt incredible, all my hard work was finally going to pay off. I had a 2 foot putt
with no break, a putt I could make a million times over in my sleep. I placed my hands onto my
putter as they gradually started to shake and tremble. I felt my stomach tighten as I realized this
"gimme" putt was nothing I could have ever prepared for. I was ready to get my first tournament
win. My hands still wavering, I brought the putter straight back and through. It felt like an eternity
as my ball inched closer and closer toward the hole. But instead of reveling in the clink as the ball
hit the bottom of the hole, the ball took a left hand turn, hit the edge of the cup, and settled a measly
inch or two from the hole. I tapped in and walked away, devastated that I had just lost the
tournament. It was as if my countless hours of preparation had

tells uncle Jack that Atticus actually listens and understands to both side of the story. "I took a deep

sentiment of that era.
4) "Can't Always Get What You Want" from Let It Bleed (1969)
Two songs in a row from Let It Bleed (it's a great album!). This is a resilient ballad preaching a
smiling picture of karma and the universe. "You can't always get what you want, but if you try
sometimes you just might find you get what you need." This enduring line encompasses the message
and tone of the song. Notice the subtle use of the Hammond organ to build the energy of the song to
a frenetic climax to end the song. What a great example of how dynamic The Rolling Stones songs
are in general.
5) "Rocks Off" from Exile On Main St. (1962)
A gritty bluesy rock song, put simply, "Rocks Off" rocks. This song, perhaps more than any other on
this list, captures the true nature and style of the band. With songs like this they changed the
direction and development of rock and roll. "But I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming. I only

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night Dylan Thomas Analysis

Poetry Essay
Response to Death When someone is close to their deathbed, he/she often ask themselves similar
questions. Have I lived my life to the fullest? Am I ready to go on? Do I have any regrets? Other
people who care about us probably ask the same questions, but answer them selfishly to convince us
to stay or to fight. Ultimately it is up to the person on their deathbed to answer these questions
regardless of what their family and friends wish. Emily Dickinson, Dylan Thomas, and William
Carlos Williams have all written poems about death, but with varying points of view. Dickinson
writes about the acceptance of death, while Thomas writes about the fight for life, but it is ... Show

As the narrator begs his father to fight to stay alive, he brings up example after example of various
people who do not give up on their deathbeds. He compares these examples to his father to show
how he feels and how he looks up to his father. He first describes how "wise men at their end know
dark is right, // Because their words had forked no lightning they // Do not go gentle into that good
night" (Thomas 4). These men understand that death is natural, but they have not made their mark in
the world yet and thus try to fight death until they have. His second example is essentially the same,
but with "good men" instead. His third example is about "Wild men who caught and sang the sun in
flight, // And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way"(Thomas 10). These are the men who took
life for granted and do not realize how unfulfilled their lives are until they are on their deathbeds.
All of these examples are the son's way of pleading with his father to hold on. His final example
asks his father to try and be happy. He says, "Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight //
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay" (Thomas 13). He is trying to encourage his father
and tell him that being blind is not a good enough reason to simply give up on life and wait for
death. His last words to his father are quite moving as he says, "Curse, bless, me now with your
fierce tears, I pray, // Do not go gentle into that good night. // Rage, rage against the dying of the
light" (Thomas 17). The son does not care if his father curses or blesses him so long as he fights to
live and does not give up. In a way, he is behaving quite selfishly because it is not his life to dictate,
but at the same time, it is a clear depiction of how frightening death is for everyone, regardless of

Examples Of Injustice In To Kill A Mockingbird
"As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest."
Nelson Mandela's quote speaks volumes toward injustice in the world today. Racism, gender bias,
unfair treatment, and false assumptions all contribute to the concept of injustice. Harper Lee's To
Kill a Mockingbird novel demonstrates many forms of injustice, and while some may seem petty,
they still have a massive effect on a person. Lee Presents an unfair trial tainted by racism and many
presumptuous people who take sides in matters when they do not even know the whole story.
Clearly, To Kill a Mockingbird carries a constant theme of injustice through racism, unfair
assumptions, and the stubbornness of man.
Firstly, the novel presents injustice through racism. Harper Lee excellently portrays injustice
through racism in the 'justice' system and by rash actions. For example, when the Ewells falsely
accuse African American Tom Robinson of rape, the trial clearly reveals Robinson's innocence. ...

The novel characterizes this form of injustice from through hasty adults and the silly thoughts of
children. For example, Scout finds herself in a quarrel with her unruly cousin Francis when he
belittles her father's work, and afterwards, she says to her Uncle, "Well, in the first place you never
stopped to gimme a chance to tell you my side of it––you just lit right into me" (113). While both
Francis and Scout were at fault in this situation, Scout's Uncle failed to hear both sides of the story
and unfairly rebukes only Scout. Another petty, but still important, injustice results from Scout and
her brother's false beliefs about Boo Radley. They assume that he is an evil person who would kill
them if they set foot on his property, but discovering his kind character proves them wrong in the
end. Clearly, the novel shows how injustice can spring from people's false assumptions or

Huck Finn And Pap's Relationship
In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain the Relationship Huck Finn and His Father
and his slave friend Jim are the exact opposite of what you would expect. Huck's righteousness is
given to him by Miss Watson, he also receives some mischief from his friend Tom. When he meets
Jim, he is taught that being good doesn't mean being there for someone, but instead that he it means
taking care of someone and having sympathy for all things that they have struggled. Pap tries to
make Huck more manly by abusing him to make him tougher, but Jim is a more successful father
figure because he influences Huck to be respectful and caring. Pap's way of making Huck "manly"
is not effective since it just offends Huck and makes him not want to be like ... Show more content

about Huck's "frills" which are like ruffles on dresses. He tries to show his son how luxurious his
life is and how he has all these but yet he doesn't share with his father. When Huck says, "I hain't got
no money." he shows how defensive he is towards Pap since he owes him nothing and he has
mistreated him his whole life. Since the moment Huck met Jim, he was open book. He didn't feel
this tension restricting him from communicating or expressing his feelings with Jim since he feels
safe with him. Huck and Jim feel safe together, after this time on the run that they have spent
together they need each other to survive. In this passage Huck and Jim are reunited after Jack, the

Gender In The Film 'Precious'
jealous of Precious for 'stealing' Carl's attention. He works the two women to his advantage of
having sex with both of them whenever he pleases. There is a running theme in this film that men
feel as though they are entitled to objectify women and that it is their right to have sex with any
woman they want. This is not just shown with Carl, but it is also seen when three young men begin
to harass Precious on her way home from Alternative School. They begin to shout verbal sexual
abuse at her, "Let me get some of that sweet ass, mama!" a nervous and frightened Precious ignores
them and continues on her way home when they shout at her again "Did you hear the fuck I said?

Who Is James Harris Irresponsible
James Harris is an irresponsible character because he doesn't do any of his school responsibilities as
in learning and turning in his work, he's also failing all his classes, and above all, because he rather
go home and hang with his older brothers and his brothers friends instead of doing his work. The
first reason why he is an irresponsible character because he doesn't do any of his work. For example
he says, "I don't listen to nothing in collins math class." This shows how irresponsible he is for not
listening to the teacher. My example fits in this because how he doesn't listen to the teacher so he
fails his class. James is very irresponsible for all they stuff he has done. Another reason why he is

Inherit The Wind Essay
In the play "Inherit the Wind" by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the defense faces numerous
societal injustices, which is why they never had a chance to win the case. One example of the town's
bias is presented through the town's love for Matthew Harrison Brady. A second example is the
extreme conformist and pious attitude of the town's people. The last instance is the narrow–
mindedness of the judge and the jury, which resulted in an unfair trial. In conclusion, the defense
suffered through many unfair circumstances throughout the drama "Inherit the Wind."
The first instance of the town's prejudice is the overall affection for Brady, the prosecuting attorney.

The religious views of town on a whole are second example why Cates, the defendant, would
without doubt be found guilty. The first instance of the religious zealots in Hillsboro was when news
came that Henry Drummond, the agnostic, was to be the defense attorney; this news brought
reactions such as "Henry Drummond is an agent of darkness. We won't let him in the town!" from
Reverend Brown, and Drummond probably wouldn't have been admitted had it not been for Brady's
encouragement to do so. Additionally, the second occasion of religiousness was throughout the trial
the city was scattered with signs such as, "Darwin is wrong!" and, "Save our schools from sin," and
a gigantic banner that hung over the entrance of the courthouse that read, "Read your Bible!" Lastly,
the night before the trial Reverend Brown held a city–wide prayer meeting on the courthouse lawn,
at this meeting Brown preached the word of Genesis, which was followed by numerous amen's and
cheering, Brown also called down a curse on any people who believed in anything other then the
Bible, or asked to pity those that did, including his own daughter. All in all, the defense never had a
chance to win due to the fact that Hillsboro was incredibly religious.
Lastly, the close–mindedness of the judge and jury also ensured Cates's guilty fate. While selecting
the jury Drummond is forced to pick jury members like Bannister who

Courage In 'Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes'
Courage
There has always been times where everyone has needed courage, sometimes more often than
others, and I believe that there are three main reasons to be courageous. I read a book full of
courageous acts, called Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, which shares the story about a girl who has
scares, making her an outcast. She meets a boy named Eric who is overweight and both are outcasts
and later on, he stays fat just so she doesn't feel so bad about her scars. It is important to be
courageous because it helps make people creative, more daring, and overall just better people.
Courage can play a big part of making changes in everyday life and over time. In Staying Fat for

The Songs I Ever Heard At A Young Age Of 11
This song is listed number one because it was one of the first Beatles songs I ever heard at a young
age of 11. The Beatles were a very spiritual group and it shows in their work. Many of their songs
were based around love and positive energy. The song was originally written by Paul McCartney in
order to guide Julian Lennon, John's son, who was neglected by his father after he began dating
Yoko Ono. My father started dating my step mother around the same age I heard the song. Certain
lyrics presented seem like they speak to me personally, "Remember to let her into your heart. Then
you can start to make it better." During the time, I was so young and did not really understand why
my father decided to start dating again shortly after my parents divorce. It was a very hard time for
to choose whether to accept and support my dad's new girlfriend and life. "Hey Jude" would relate
to the topic of choices and decisions, because change is a very hard thing to accept and when and
how you accept it can vary based upon the person.

Shakespeare Sonnet Analysis
Hi classmates and Professor Schultz, I chose 130, because it's my ideal weight, no, not really.
However, this sonnet is crafty and atypical, while it does rival romantic ideals of this form of poetry
and era's trend. Shakespeare uses the speaker, who in turn uses you, bombastically. Now, the reader,
you, is gripped into a 1st POV front seat, and "I" is an immediate transgressive tone that occupies.
Clever, I think, because as you, the culprit is appalled by the visuals of your lover, you're
speculating by the second disparaging quatrain, "What the heck am I doing with this lover." Well,
that's one way to look at it–. Otherwise, you've disconnected from the verbal sadist, vexed, amid
insults from a speaker's vile comparisons of a lover's flaws, in disdain. Shocking, right? OK, Let's
break it down a bit. The lack of emotion breakdown or the elixir couplet to boot. At first glance, it's
dark and callous, while showing the speaker apparently in contradictory minds about his lover. The
recipient of this prickly sonnet was not the archetypal blond, pale and rosy–cheeked beauty that was
so fashionable in court, but rather the opposite. Not to say, the former is not beauty, but by today's
prism opinions she's likely on par amongst the vast multihued acceptance. In retrospect, it's about
his beloved, he puts himself in a realistic plateau. Brings us down from the clouds of a champion,
and in an almost eulogy reproach to illustrate his remedial dame–the mistress. Still, to

John Lennon Research Paper
I was, to be honest, devastated when the Beatles broke up to go their separate ways, and always torn
between the music of Paul McCartney, which was always more rock and roll and raw, and that of
John Lennon – often introspective and quiet but eternally thought –provoking, because his was a
talent bordering on genius, tinged perhaps with a hint of madness? I loved each of them in their own
way, but somehow always found Lennon songs came to mind more readily. Imagine was far and
away his best album, the title track covered so often now that almost every artist you can name has
sung it at least once , but this most iconic of albums was perhaps not exactly what it appeared to be.
It was, without question, a truly gigantic success commercially, both when first released, and on the
re–release following his sudden death – at the hands of a deranged individual Mark David Chapman
on December 8th 1980, in front of his home – but it was not the album that those who had expected
a return to pop music had envisaged. Lennon loved Yoko Ono with a passion, and that came through
in this album with a vengeance. The pair of them were famous for protesting things they regarded as

The Damned Human Race Huck Finn Analysis
"Since the Moral Sense has but the one office, the one capacity –– to enable man to do wrong –– it
is plainly without value to him. It is as valueless to him as is disease... kill his neighbor with a
poisonous bite." In the essay written by Mark Twain, "The Damned Human Race", Twain
emphasizes the moral sense on how the damned human race exemplifies the cruelty and the
immorality of our society. Throughout the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
utilizes satire in order to illustrate how he criticizes and ridicules society. Through satire, he decries
society's morality, inhumanity, and hypocrisy in order to further illustrate how he criticizes society
and to emphasize how it affects a person by influencing one's decisions and one's personality. He
also emphasizes morality, inhumanity, and hypocrisy in order to replace violence, cruelty, and
ignorance to the moral sense of humanity. In the novel, Twain utilizes morality through Huckleberry
Finn's decisions in order to illustrate Huckleberry's conscience and his moral crisis. An example of
Huckleberry's morality is in page eight: "They talked it over, and they was going to rule me out,
because they said every boy must have a family or somebody to kill, or else it wouldn't be fair and
square for the others... but all at once I thought of a way, and so I offered them Miss Watson–they
could kill her." In Huckleberry's desperate situation, he uses Miss Watson as an element of death by

authors create myths, each women writes about completely different stories. Individually they write
about how something came to be using the creativity in their minds. Both through storytelling.
Though, they are in the same genre of writing, each has a distinct style which gives the readers, the
chance to open up their imagination, with all of it's creativity, cleverness and unlikeness. Katharine
Berry reports the characteristics to the reader with words in relation to the setting. She chooses
words which represent the things the narrator is observing from the lively world around them. For

She uses specific details which connects to her audience the kinds of environments or actions taking

Then Water Beetle dived to the bottom of the water and brought up some soft mud. This began to
grow and spread out on every side until it became the island which we call earth." The description of
Earth, "there was no land at all." This quote causes the reader to think deep into their mind and
imagine what that would that look like to the narrator. The words, "no land" can reflect on the idea
of what the earth's surface looks like completely empty. Another illustration of Berry's dynamic
details can be found in quotes, "when the Earth was dry and the animals came, down it was still

atmosphere came off to to the witness. Her choice of words can make the reader aware that she is

Second Language Acquisition on Children
Second Language Acquisition and Age Impact on its Acquisition
Ika Ulil M
20111111042
Abstract
Children acquire language since they were born. They communicate with their parents. Furthermore,
children and parents interact with each other using a language that we often call the first language or
mother tongue. At an early age, children are only learning one language that is the mother tongue.
By age and speech development, children improve to acquire a second language from the school or
the environment around them. In terms of speed of langgauge acquisition, children are factorized by
both the child and the child's learning environment. Therefore, it is important to understand how
children acquire second language. This paper is provided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When discussing about "In other words", Bialystok and Hakuta state that there is some thought that
children who may appear to be learning a second languge very quickly at a vey young age (before
the age of 5). They further state that accompanied by the loss of their first language, have really
replaced the first language with the second language. 3. Models for Second Language Acquisition
Some linguistic models try to explain the development of second language acquisition. The three
most common models are (1) the Universal Grammar Model, (2) the Competition Model, and (3)
the Monitor Model. The Universal Grammar Model refers to the system of principles, conditions,
and rules that are properties or elements of all human languages. At the same time, each language
has grammatical rules that vary from one language to another. Thus, Chomky states that different
languages have a limited possibility of different grammatical structures (1975). Therefore, second
language learners base their second language acquisition on universal principles common to all
languages, and on the force of the particular rules of each language. All of those can be concluded
that as a human, especially as children, we have vary form of rules in language, in this case is
second language. The Competition Model is based in the assumption that forms of natural language
are created to communicate. Thus, second language learners are faced with the conflict between

Gimme Shelter: Movie Analysis
Gimme Shelter
Anne Morse have the ability to attract audiences than Sandy Schaefer because Anne Morse's
perspective of Gimme Shelter was more emotional and digs deep into how much the author
struggled to get the movie out despite of all the people who try to stop him by offering him money.
She also showed how much the cast were devoted to making this movie. Some of the actor from the
movie did not even get paid instead they donated the money they made from the movie to the real
life shelters run by DiFiore.
The Gimme Shelter is about a young girl that have been abused and trouble most of her life. Being
alone at a time of needs, abandoned by her father and driven away by her mother's addiction. She
was all alone until she found a place to stay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believe that God's gift should not be killed by the fate of their mothers. Her audiences tend to
turn around everything with god. Anne Said "When you talk about "choice," people of faith are the
ones offering a real choice to some of the most desperate young mothers around – those nobody else
cares about." (Morse, 2014). This proves that her viewer are churchgoers–people who are religious
or traditionalist.
Morse's attitude toward the movie is compassionate because she praises the good intention the
movie had to offer. Anne admired krauss's intentions where he says "I set out to make a film about
life that was realistic. People get into bad situations, and then their faith shows up." (Morse, 2014).
This confirms that the author's determination opens the universe's hidden obstacles many teenagers
burden.
Morse's view of the movie contrived emotional effect on my because she talked about how "Krauss
encountered a young girl who had walked about 25 miles to get [to Gimme Shelter] in freezing
weather with no jacket. And she was three months pregnant." (morse,2014). I was emotional when I
read it because I was born of teenage mother and I would not want my mother to go through same
struggle the girl did. Over 750,00 teenagers become pregnant each year and Knowing that they have
a place in Gimma Shelter if their family do not except them makes me passionate to the work

Gadamer’s On the Natural Inclination of Human Beings...
Gadamer's On the Natural Inclination of Human Beings Toward Philosophy follows an idea that a
desire for knowledge, in researching philosophy and sciences, can be related to Plato's thaumazein,
the idea of wonder. The specifically human function of thinking starts, not routinely or in merriment,
but at "...a point where something strikes us as alien because it runs counter to habitual expectation."
(Gadamer 143) The fascination and wonderment towards ideas Gadamer claims, "...comes to me
above all in the face of the alien and the strange." (145). He is emphasizing that it is philosophy
specifically, in the practice of thinking and understanding is susceptible by technology and
contemporary society. "Self–knowledge alone is capable of saving a ... Show more content on

Our inclination stems from our need to fulfill that wonder, and in fact becomes much more of an
important subject because of the growing need for instant gratification. He does call into question
whether or not the definition of philosophy is the same as that of past philosophers. He is point of
whether "...there (is) still time for leisure and for leisurely speculation about the insoluble
questions..." (139) does resonate more now than when written in 1979. It's amazing to see how well
he predicted our growing dependency on technology when not much was to be known about how
one lives in today's "technology, instant–gratification, gimme–gimme" society. The overall idea of
what philosophy is in itself a Greek idea. However, he strives to claim that even though the "old"
idea for philosophy does not answer the current idea, it is still prevalent in different forms. As he
explains, Plato's "definition" states the well known Greek idea that the meaning is the "...incessant
though constantly unfulfilled striving after truth, whereas knowing is for the gods." (141) Being that
Western ideas now take a different path of science, and that definition being Platonic, Gadamer
gives a more "contemporary" definition. This is the most important thing in human understanding,
to genuinely experience and grasp for knowledge Gadamer emphasizes that being wise, the ability

To Kill A Mockingbird Dialectical Journal
How To Kill a Mockingbird Journal How characters affect other characters By Sadie Giddings A
bunch of characters in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird affect other characters. Each character is
affected differently. Scout affects a bunch of characters. On page 46, Scout brings out the good in
Dill. What I mean by this is that Scout and Dill are really close friends and Dill says he is going to
marry Scout. This also affects Scout. Dill says he is going to marry Scout makes her feels joyful. On
that page it says "He had asked me earlier in the summer to marry him, then he promptly forgot
about it. He staked me out, marked as his property, said I was the only girl he would ever love, then
he neglected me." Dill started to neglect Scout by hanging out with Jem more yes that upset ... Show

That someone else was Miss Maudie. Scout started hanging out with Miss Maudie when she started
to be neglected by Dill and Jem. Because Scout was hanging out with Miss Maudie it made Miss
Maudie feels appreciated. Miss Maudie felt appreciated because she had someone that wanted to
talk to her and spend time with her. On pages 46–47, it says "Our tacit treaty with Miss Maudie was
that we could play on her lawn, eat her scuppernongs if we didn't jump on the arbor, and explore her
vast back lot, terms so generous we seldom spoke to her, so careful were we to preserve the delicate
balance of our relationship, but Jem and Dill drove me closer to her with their behavior." Scout also
affects Uncle Jack by showing him that there is more than just one side of a story. On page 97 it says
"'I'm disappointed in you―you had that coming and you know it." "Didn't either." Honey, you can't
go around calling people―" "You ain't fair," I said, "you ain't fair." Uncle Jack's eyebrows... "You

Essay About Trade

  • 1. Essay About Trade Mr. Jefferson Ah, we have a tradesman on our hands! Trades seem to be frowned upon within today's youth culture, but I look at it as a step up in a simple man's game. JUSTIN I don't intend on entering a trade. MR. JEFFERSON I'm sorry, I don't believe I follow. If You don't intend to go to university – something that judging by your grades is unlikely anyways – but also don't intend to go to college nor enter a trade...what is it you intend to do? The air was cool, but not as bad as what was to come. Pittsburgh usually has a good autumn but a horrible winter. It was the day before Thanksgiving. I was sitting in Trigonometry counting down the minutes until the school day would be over. I still had around four or five hours. It was only the beginning of the day, but my excitement was growing. Of course I was excited. We were going to have extra days off from school. What more can a girl want? I was working to repaint the haunted house's maze. That was not easy. I did not know the way around it, so it made the job harder and longer. That summer I think I covered myself in black paint. All of our hard work paid off, for we had a great season and raised a lot of money for the Make–a–wish foundation. After that, Billy and I hardly spoke. A few months roll by and I decide to call him. We started to hang out again. It was if we didn't lose any time at all. We tried the dating thing, but we decided that being friends was better for us. We would go to the mall just so we could eat at the Japanese place. Their chicken teriyaki was to die for. The taste was so amazing. It was never too hot, and it had just the right amount of flavor. Our friendship was perfect, for a while. We got into an argument right the start of November. The funny thing is I don't even remember what the argument was about. We didn't talk to each other for a week. He called me but neither of us apologized. I only wish I had. Fast forward a week. The whole school day I was wondering about what Lauren said to me. I kept wondering, "Is Billy really dead?" I could not concentrate on anything else. It was if my mind had erased everything except that thought. • 7. Rock And Roll Influence On Society There is a common misperception in society today that the roots of rock and roll began in the 1950s with Elvis Presley shaking his hips. Few know that the roots of rock and roll actually go all the way back to slavery. Rock and roll first got its start with the blues and has since evolved over time into the rock and roll we now know of today. As each new band and artist would come along, they would go on to add their own sound to the mix, and once it was introduced it would never be taken away. The influence of blues artists, such as Mamie Smith, and hillbilly (country and folk) artists such as Hank Williams, could be heard in the music of 1950s rockers Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley, and their influence could be heard in one of the most famous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the end of World War II, the British Invasion had begun and bands such as The Rolling Stones were becoming what is often seen as the epitome of rock and roll. Often thought of as the "bad boys" of the British Invasion, their songs contained more messages about sex, drugs and rock and roll instead of inequality, oppression and the troubles and issues people face. However, they carried on the legacy of the blues nonetheless. Their performances had the influence of the likes of Chuck Berry's unabashed performances, with Mick Jagger's attitude and posing. Although it is not like them to do political lyrics, a song that propels them to stardom is the song "Gimme Shelter" which is often interpreted to be a song about war. The repetition that is often found in blues is apparent in "Gimme Shelter as well with the lyrics "war, children, it's just a shot away, it's just a shot ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Radley Character Development To Kill a Mockingbird Question 1 Even though the first eleven chapters of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird may seem tedious and pointless to some, I find them to be charming and compelling because of the character development that happens during them. The subplot of Boo Radley especially helped to show the development of the characters. This subplot displayed the personalities of Jem, Scout, and Dill as it progressed. It also created many events which serve as reference points for the development of these characters throughout the book, such as when Jem is dared to touch Radley's house and views that as true courage. "In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare." (p. 13) Later on Jem is shown that true courage is, after being told to go ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety–eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew." (p. 112) Another example of character growth during these first eleven chapters is when the Finches go to visit Aunt Alexandra and Uncle Jack. During the visit Scout has an encounter with her cousin Frances that ends in a fight. Later when Uncle Jack talks to Scout about why the fight happened she ends up teaching him a lesson about children. This shows character development in both Scout, as it shows she is now able to tell her idea and stand up for it rather than just accept someone else's, and in Uncle Jack, as he now knows how to deal with situation such as this where listening to just one side of a story can be unfair for others. "Well, In the first place you never stopped to gimme a chance to tell you my side of it – you just lit right into me. When Jem an' I fuss Atticus doesn't ever just listen to Jem's side of it, he hears mine too, an' in the second place you told me never to use words like that except in ex–extreme provocation, and Francis provocated me enough to knock his block off–" (Scout, p. 86) To conclude, I enjoyed the first eleven chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird because of the large amount of character development that made me relate to the characters, making the ... My Favorite Music Essay Teenage years are the times for new experiences and music was no different as the experience marked with great memories of music that is very nostalgic and can be attached to moments good or bad that make us reminisce when we hear the music of our child hood. I am Mexican and my teenage years I spent in Mexico until I was sixteen when my family migrated to the united states however I didn't really understood English I can honestly say that I like Rock En Espanol and would not hesitate to say that it is my favorite genre of music when I was a teenager, I will try my best to share my favorite music as I reminisce on some great music in my past. As a teenager growing up in Mexico I wasn't really interested in listening to music, as my interest were sports and television. The musical influences that I can recall in my early childhood, were those of my parents. Who would listen to Corridos and Rancheras, which were a type of folk Mexican revolutionary music, they would sing about the struggles in life during the Mexican civil war. As I grew up the type of music my friends listen to were Cumbias Colombianas and Rock En Espanol those were my early memories of music which I still listen and enjoy today. I would listen to Rock En Espanol artist like Café Tacuba, Caifanes, Mana, Maldita Vecindad, Enanitos Verdes, and Fabulosos Cadillacs. I began listening more to the lyrics and the sound of the music for example, Maldita Vecindad has a Rock sound that evolved into a Ska sound. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. To Kill A Mockingbird Reflection Throughout their lives, individuals learn many valuable lessons that help them to grow and mature as human beings. This also means being cooperative with people. The prominent novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird", by Harper Lee portrays a story written from a girl named Scout. Scout is in her childhood and faces many hardships, including the trial of Tom Robinson and her dad being the defendant. One prominent theme that Lee includes is how individuals must see different perspectives putting an end to bigotry and the tension between others. Atticus Finch is a great example of an individual who instructs his children, Jem and Scout, precious life lessons about accepting all people. In chapter eleven Atticus tries to explain to Jem, why different people have a different view on things by saying, "She had her own views about things, a lot different from mine, maybe... son, I told you that if you hadn't lost your head I'd have made you go read to her... she was the bravest person I knew" (Lee 128). This conveys that Atticus wanted Jem to understand and accept her rather than just judging her. Sometimes getting to know people isn't so bad because you never really understand them until you enlighten a person. Not only does Atticus takes his time to understand Mrs. Dubose, but he also takes his time out to defend Tom Robinson. Scout is troubled from the rumors of her dad being the defendant of Tom Robinson. Lee explains why Atticus defends Tom Robinson despite of the ridicule when she writes "... the main one is, is I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this country in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again" (Lee 86). Atticus accepted the case because he suggests that his morals for children and others are far greater than his reputation. Although the people in Maycomb is racist, Atticus is there for Tom Robinson and being a role model for his children to accept people for who they are. Atticus attempts to teach his kids about seeing things in other people's point of view to eliminate prejudice because he knows that the town is full of bigotry and racism. A Dream In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun Raisin in the Sun Essay Have you ever noticed one person with a dream, or passion that truly deserves it but always struggles to reach that dream? Not just everyday humans experience this, but characters within readings even face challenges like ours. The story A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry tells of an African American family striving to reach individual, and shared dreams, though one character preservers for dozens of years before finally reaping success. Mama's dream is the most deserving because she has suffered the longest, carried her family up to this point, all while remaining honorable to her personal beliefs. Wrapping up the first scene in fact, Mama turned to both verbal and physical forms to defend herself after slapping Beneatha she calmly brought herself to say "Repeat after me– in my mother's house there is still a God." (I. ii) Although the physical swing may have been excessive, Mama stood up for her religious beliefs and simply would not accept the disrespect from a younger family member due to her devoted faith. Leaping all the way back to scene three Mama's comment is humorous in some ways when she states "My son said we was going to move and there ain't nothing left for me to say. You know how these young folks is nowadays, mister. Can't do a thing with 'em. Goodbye." (II. iii) The humor in this is that Mama is kind to strangers and welcoming to any, but when this man attempted to segregate an area and remove them from being near him she made sure the man understood how she felt. Countless times in the story we see her stick up to others but when she acts as if she can't control Walter, I personally laughed because I can imagine the snooty rich man with the briefcase and Mama in her powerful stance acting as if her hands were tied, allowing Walter to act childish to drive away the rich man. Examples Of Justice In To Kill A Mockingbird In the story To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper develops the themes of justice, morality, and ethics by using the characters Atticus, Tom Robinson, and the snowman to represent those themes. Atticus represents justice in the fact that he gives both sides a chance to explain the scenario and he tries to prove everyone's innocence despite race or background. In August of 2012, a study at the University of Cambridge has tested this conclusion, hypothesising instead that possibly the DNA found is a remainder of a common ancestor of both species. The multiregional origin of modern humans is a scientific idea that gives reasons for the pattern of human evolution that was suggested by Milford H. Wolpoff. Multiregional origin says that the evolution of humans from 2.5 million years ago to the present day has been inside of one human species, evolving into modern humans. The book also speaks about human languages. It says that when scientists studied the sounds in languages from around the world, they detected an ancient cue that leads to southern Africa as the location where modern human language began. The discovery fits well with the evidence from fossils and DNA that modern humans arose in Africa. It also suggests, but does not prove, that modern language began only once. The discovery of such an old cue in language is shocking. Since words change so rapidly, many linguists think that languages can't be tracked back very far in time. A practice that started many decades ago, dating back to the 1940s and beyond, has become not only accepted but expected. It is a complex issue; however, as it raises issues such as the acknowledgment of the covered music as original art, the ethical questions the practice raises, and the relevance of the cover to popular music. Artists have covered songs for many years, and the practice has expanded drastically. Some artists cover songs performed by an artist covering other songs. Other musicians merely sample parts of a song, using that sample to create their own work. Recently, rap musicians have even begun producing many remixes that continue to raise ethical questions. • 25. Theme Of Childhood In To Kill A Mockingbird Evan Carlson 11–15–17 Adv Eng 4th Motherhood The story "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee takes place in a fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, this is based on Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. In the story Calpurnia is the maid for the Finch family, because in the 1930's it was still common for negroes to work as house servants for low pay and little respect. Calpurnia is the only present female figure in the Finch household, which in a sense makes her the mother to Scout and Jem. Atticus and Calpurnia are both parents to the children, but Calpurnia is more of a stickler especially since she has already had children of her own. Cal embraces her second motherhood to do the best possible job at hoping she can make a difference in their lives which was not present with her biological children. In the story Scout and Calpurnia share many parallels with a mother and daughter. For instance, "She was always ordering me out of the kitchen, asking me why I couldn't behave as well as Jem when she knew he was older, and calling me home when I wasn't ready to come"(Lee 6). This shares many similarities with the epic battles that mothers and children face through raising their children and growing up, given my parents are sticklers I have been in my fair share of wars. Growing up in my house and being at my friends' behavior, getting out of the kitchen, and getting called inside was, and still is a vicious cycle constantly in motion enacted by our mothers and is ... Eatonville was one of the first towns founded by African Americans in the US. Because they are set in the same town, the stories' characters speak in a broken, English dialect of the South, to reflect the era and location in which they lived. These stories depict identical circumstances with different consequences. They illustrate the betrayal of adultery within both of the marriages of Sykes and Delia, from "Sweat", and Missy May and Joe from "The Gilded Six–Bits". Furthermore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "Sweat", Delia is absolutely terrified by the idea of snakes. Sykes knows this but that doesn't stop him from antagonizing her with the thought. He uses a bullwhip to scare her, as it resembles a snake. He puts it over her shoulder while she is doing work, and she reacts terrified, in which greatly pleases Sykes. "Sykes, what you throw dat whip on me like dat? You know it would skeer me–– looks just like a snake, an' you knows how skeered Ah is of snakes." (Hurston 1) Sykes still isn't finished with his tormenting, as he brings home a rattlesnake. This is where irony strikes, as the same snake he used to torment Delia bites him and inevitably kills him. In "The Gilded Six Bits", the theme of irony is present as well. With Joe's constant praise of Slemmons, this ironically contributed to Missy's betrayal as he constantly peaked her interest about him. Joe and Missy May dont realize that they possess something far more valuable than gold. They have each other's love, which proves to be a very strong thing nonetheless. Missy May almost throws this away for a gold coin, to which she finds out that it is just a gold plated half dollar. "She took it into her hands trembling and saw that it was no gold piece. I felt my stomach tighten as I took a step up to the first platform, took one last deep breath, and jumped. The violent, Costa Rican air whipped around me, spinning my body in a circle like a helicopter blade. I tirelessly squeezed the handlebar with the rough, sandpaper gloves like my life depended on it. Ironically, at the time, I thought it did. I was mortified. After helplessly spinning around for about a minute, I crashed into the end of the line and nervously unhooked my harness. One down, seven to go. The next line began similarly to the first one. I leaped off the platform hesitantly, but the wind had died down and I was able to relax. I gazed across the seemingly endless lush, green landscapes of the Costa Rican mountain ranges in awe. Still choke holding the handlebar, I was not comfortable in the slightest. I left the third platform just a second quicker feeling slightly more secure in the harness. This time, I released the handlebar, leaving my doubts and worries behind. I was about as content as I could possibly be given the circumstances, dangling thousands of feet up in the air in the mountains, supported by a jaded wooden rope an inch in diameter. Two summers ago, I trotted onto the 18th green, up one stroke in the tournament. It felt incredible, all my hard work was finally going to pay off. I had a 2 foot putt with no break, a putt I could make a million times over in my sleep. I placed my hands onto my putter as they gradually started to shake and tremble. I felt my stomach tighten as I realized this "gimme" putt was nothing I could have ever prepared for. I was ready to get my first tournament win. My hands still wavering, I brought the putter straight back and through. It felt like an eternity as my ball inched closer and closer toward the hole. But instead of reveling in the clink as the ball hit the bottom of the hole, the ball took a left hand turn, hit the edge of the cup, and settled a measly inch or two from the hole. Have I lived my life to the fullest? Am I ready to go on? Do I have any regrets? Other people who care about us probably ask the same questions, but answer them selfishly to convince us to stay or to fight. Ultimately it is up to the person on their deathbed to answer these questions regardless of what their family and friends wish. As the narrator begs his father to fight to stay alive, he brings up example after example of various people who do not give up on their deathbeds. He compares these examples to his father to show how he feels and how he looks up to his father. He first describes how "wise men at their end know dark is right, // Because their words had forked no lightning they // Do not go gentle into that good night" (Thomas 4). These men understand that death is natural, but they have not made their mark in the world yet and thus try to fight death until they have. His second example is essentially the same, but with "good men" instead. His third example is about "Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, // And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way"(Thomas 10). These are the men who took life for granted and do not realize how unfulfilled their lives are until they are on their deathbeds. All of these examples are the son's way of pleading with his father to hold on. His final example asks his father to try and be happy. He says, "Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight // Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay" (Thomas 13). He is trying to encourage his father and tell him that being blind is not a good enough reason to simply give up on life and wait for death. His last words to his father are quite moving as he says, "Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray, // Do not go gentle into that good night. // Rage, rage against the dying of the light" (Thomas 17). The son does not care if his father curses or blesses him so long as he fights to live and does not give up. In a way, he is behaving quite selfishly because it is not his life to dictate, but at the same time, it is a clear depiction of how frightening death is for everyone, regardless of your ... Nelson Mandela's quote speaks volumes toward injustice in the world today. Racism, gender bias, unfair treatment, and false assumptions all contribute to the concept of injustice. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird novel demonstrates many forms of injustice, and while some may seem petty, they still have a massive effect on a person. Lee Presents an unfair trial tainted by racism and many presumptuous people who take sides in matters when they do not even know the whole story. Clearly, To Kill a Mockingbird carries a constant theme of injustice through racism, unfair assumptions, and the stubbornness of man. Firstly, the novel presents injustice through racism. While both Francis and Scout were at fault in this situation, Scout's Uncle failed to hear both sides of the story and unfairly rebukes only Scout. Another petty, but still important, injustice results from Scout and her brother's false beliefs about Boo Radley. • 47. Inherit The Wind Essay In the play "Inherit the Wind" by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the defense faces numerous societal injustices, which is why they never had a chance to win the case. One example of the town's bias is presented through the town's love for Matthew Harrison Brady. A second example is the extreme conformist and pious attitude of the town's people. The last instance is the narrow– mindedness of the judge and the jury, which resulted in an unfair trial. The religious views of town on a whole are second example why Cates, the defendant, would without doubt be found guilty. The first instance of the religious zealots in Hillsboro was when news came that Henry Drummond, the agnostic, was to be the defense attorney; this news brought reactions such as "Henry Drummond is an agent of darkness. We won't let him in the town!" from Reverend Brown, and Drummond probably wouldn't have been admitted had it not been for Brady's encouragement to do so. Additionally, the second occasion of religiousness was throughout the trial the city was scattered with signs such as, "Darwin is wrong!" and, "Save our schools from sin," and a gigantic banner that hung over the entrance of the courthouse that read, "Read your Bible!" Lastly, the night before the trial Reverend Brown held a city–wide prayer meeting on the courthouse lawn, at this meeting Brown preached the word of Genesis, which was followed by numerous amen's and cheering, Brown also called down a curse on any people who believed in anything other then the Bible, or asked to pity those that did, including his own daughter. All in all, the defense never had a chance to win due to the fact that Hillsboro was incredibly religious. Lastly, the close–mindedness of the judge and jury also ensured Cates's guilty fate. Courage In 'Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes' Courage There has always been times where everyone has needed courage, sometimes more often than others, and I believe that there are three main reasons to be courageous. I read a book full of courageous acts, called Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, which shares the story about a girl who has scares, making her an outcast. She meets a boy named Eric who is overweight and both are outcasts and later on, he stays fat just so she doesn't feel so bad about her scars. It is important to be courageous because it helps make people creative, more daring, and overall just better people. Courage can play a big part of making changes in everyday life and over time. • 53. The Songs I Ever Heard At A Young Age Of 11 This song is listed number one because it was one of the first Beatles songs I ever heard at a young age of 11. The Beatles were a very spiritual group and it shows in their work. Many of their songs were based around love and positive energy. The song was originally written by Paul McCartney in order to guide Julian Lennon, John's son, who was neglected by his father after he began dating Yoko Ono. My father started dating my step mother around the same age I heard the song. Certain lyrics presented seem like they speak to me personally, "Remember to let her into your heart. Then you can start to make it better." During the time, I was so young and did not really understand why my father decided to start dating again shortly after my parents divorce. It was a very hard time for to choose whether to accept and support my dad's new girlfriend and life. "Hey Jude" would relate to the topic of choices and decisions, because change is a very hard thing to accept and when and how you accept it can vary based upon the person. 2Pac – I Wonder If Heaven Gotta Ghetto "I Wonder If Heaven Gotta Ghetto" is one of my favorite 2Pac songs, from one of my favorite artist and who I believe to be the best rapper ever. • 55. Shakespeare Sonnet Analysis Hi classmates and Professor Schultz, I chose 130, because it's my ideal weight, no, not really. However, this sonnet is crafty and atypical, while it does rival romantic ideals of this form of poetry and era's trend. Shakespeare uses the speaker, who in turn uses you, bombastically. Now, the reader, you, is gripped into a 1st POV front seat, and "I" is an immediate transgressive tone that occupies. Clever, I think, because as you, the culprit is appalled by the visuals of your lover, you're speculating by the second disparaging quatrain, "What the heck am I doing with this lover." Well, that's one way to look at it–. Otherwise, you've disconnected from the verbal sadist, vexed, amid insults from a speaker's vile comparisons of a lover's flaws, in disdain. Shocking, right? OK, Let's break it down a bit. The lack of emotion breakdown or the elixir couplet to boot. At first glance, it's dark and callous, while showing the speaker apparently in contradictory minds about his lover. The recipient of this prickly sonnet was not the archetypal blond, pale and rosy–cheeked beauty that was so fashionable in court, but rather the opposite. Not to say, the former is not beauty, but by today's prism opinions she's likely on par amongst the vast multihued acceptance. In retrospect, it's about his beloved, he puts himself in a realistic plateau. John Lennon Research Paper I was, to be honest, devastated when the Beatles broke up to go their separate ways, and always torn between the music of Paul McCartney, which was always more rock and roll and raw, and that of John Lennon – often introspective and quiet but eternally thought –provoking, because his was a talent bordering on genius, tinged perhaps with a hint of madness? I loved each of them in their own way, but somehow always found Lennon songs came to mind more readily. Imagine was far and away his best album, the title track covered so often now that almost every artist you can name has sung it at least once , but this most iconic of albums was perhaps not exactly what it appeared to be. It was, without question, a truly gigantic success commercially, both when first released, and on the re–release following his sudden death – at the hands of a deranged individual Mark David Chapman on December 8th 1980, in front of his home – but it was not the album that those who had expected a return to pop music had envisaged. It is as valueless to him as is disease... kill his neighbor with a poisonous bite." In the essay written by Mark Twain, "The Damned Human Race", Twain emphasizes the moral sense on how the damned human race exemplifies the cruelty and the immorality of our society. Throughout the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain utilizes satire in order to illustrate how he criticizes and ridicules society. Through satire, he decries society's morality, inhumanity, and hypocrisy in order to further illustrate how he criticizes society and to emphasize how it affects a person by influencing one's decisions and one's personality. He also emphasizes morality, inhumanity, and hypocrisy in order to replace violence, cruelty, and ignorance to the moral sense of humanity. In the novel, Twain utilizes morality through Huckleberry Finn's decisions in order to illustrate Huckleberry's conscience and his moral crisis. An example of Huckleberry's morality is in page eight: "They talked it over, and they was going to rule me out, because they said every boy must have a family or somebody to kill, or else it wouldn't be fair and square for the others... but all at once I thought of a way, and so I offered them Miss Watson–they could kill her." They communicate with their parents. Furthermore, children and parents interact with each other using a language that we often call the first language or mother tongue. At an early age, children are only learning one language that is the mother tongue. By age and speech development, children improve to acquire a second language from the school or the environment around them. Models for Second Language Acquisition Some linguistic models try to explain the development of second language acquisition. The three most common models are (1) the Universal Grammar Model, (2) the Competition Model, and (3) the Monitor Model. The Universal Grammar Model refers to the system of principles, conditions, and rules that are properties or elements of all human languages. At the same time, each language has grammatical rules that vary from one language to another. Thus, Chomky states that different languages have a limited possibility of different grammatical structures (1975). Therefore, second language learners base their second language acquisition on universal principles common to all languages, and on the force of the particular rules of each language. All of those can be concluded that as a human, especially as children, we have vary form of rules in language, in this case is second language. Gadamer's On the Natural Inclination of Human Beings Toward Philosophy follows an idea that a desire for knowledge, in researching philosophy and sciences, can be related to Plato's thaumazein, the idea of wonder. The specifically human function of thinking starts, not routinely or in merriment, but at "...a point where something strikes us as alien because it runs counter to habitual expectation." (Gadamer 143) The fascination and wonderment towards ideas Gadamer claims, "...comes to me above all in the face of the alien and the strange." (145). He is point of whether "...there (is) still time for leisure and for leisurely speculation about the insoluble questions..." (139) does resonate more now than when written in 1979. The overall idea of what philosophy is in itself a Greek idea. However, he strives to claim that even though the "old" idea for philosophy does not answer the current idea, it is still prevalent in different forms.
