Effective instructors must understand the issues that impact multicultural education in the United
States. The significance of providing an eminence instruction in an unbiased approach to all of their
students is essential. The tide of demographic changes in the United States has affected most
classrooms in our schools. As a result, some classroom teachers realize they must quickly acquire a
comprehensive understanding of ethnic, cultural, and social–class diversity present in today's
schools. Otherwise, these teachers will face difficulty in classrooms comprised of fifty–one percent

Conclusively, traditional teachers with no experience in multicultural education training is a
significant issue in Texas. Although, there are issues in multicultural education, there are solutions
to these problem and we are a working progress. Many divisions offer workshops for traditional
teachers will no multicultural education training, but the state should provide mandatory attendance
for these workshops. Resulting in training in multicultural education will open access for effective
multicultural education.

These studies consistently find that lack of cultural awareness in classroom learning leads to

The development of a school and classroom curriculum is critical to achieving a multicultural
school setting for students. The implications of my findings for teaching and learning are that
educators need to better evaluate their texts and curriculum that they use with their students. In
Becoming a Multicultural Educator, author James Banks explains that every student should receive
an education of high quality and with that they should attain skills that will help them to flourish in

Through my research, I found that there is an imbalance and selectivity that come with bias in
textbooks and curriculums (Sadker and Zittleman from Becoming a Multicultural Educator). I was
not surprised to find and imbalance of category representation within the textbook I investigated.
White males were consistently being "the hero" in the stories used throughout the chapters of
Journeys. Females were portrayed as needing saving, and African Americans as sidekicks to white
males or females. I believe that it is extremely difficult for textbooks to be fully multicultural. As a
future educator, I believe that it is part of my job to make sure that the texts and the curriculum that
I am using with my students is as culturally sensitive and as multicultural as possible for the benefit
of the students. My understanding of resonance in bias is that biases are represented everywhere and
it is important to know what they look like and are. It is challenging to try and meet the diverse
needs of every student, but with time and effort it will be worth while to make sure that I represent
as many cultures and diverse experiences within my lessons as possible. This investigation opened
by eyes to the true imbalance of multicultural representation within textbooks and I will now know

Multicultural education began with a civil rights movements of various oppressed minority groups.
It was a result of "minority response to failure of compensatory education programs launched in the
1960's" (McCarty 1993 p. 225). Gloria Ladson–Billings (1995), Lisa Delpit (2005) and John Dewey
(1897) assert that there is a minimal representation of multicultural support to students of color. The
methods by which they approach the lack of support for children of color is similar and they agree
that something must change for success to occur with minorities. In this essay, I will discuss the lack
of representation of multicultural education within the school system and several tools to try and
implement changes.
Ladson–Billings (1995) focused on the on research with teachers who have had success with
African American students. Her main goal is to bring attention to the relevance of the African
American students who are not served well in their communities. First, Ladson–Billings emphasizes
that what African American children are lacking is just "good teaching". For example, she states, "I
am describing good teaching, ... why so little of it seems to be occurring in the classrooms populated
by African American students" (p.159). In other words, she understands that children are not

Teachers have to examine their prior experiences and confront fears that influenced their value
system ( Vang, 2005). In the article, An Ecological Perspective on Preparing Teachers for

according to James A. Bank multicultural education is "the idea that all students–regardless of their
gender, sexual orientation, social class, and ethnic, racial, or cultural characteristics–should have an
equal opportunity to learn in school" (Banks, p. 1), not regarding in what socioeconomic level the
students and their families "belong" in. In the article "Sociology: Understanding and Changing the
Social World", the upper class consists of households that earn more than $200,000 per year, this
only includes 4% of the U.S. household population, the middle class is divided in two parts, the
upper–middle class ranges from households that earn between $150,000–$199,999, while the
lower–middle class household earns from $50,000–$74,999. The upper–middle class is only about
4.4% and the lower middle–class population is about 18% of households in the U.S. The lower
class, which is called the working class consist of 25% of households in the U.S., they earn about

The substantial task of desegregation did not come without its struggles. Parents were faced with
issues of involvement in their child's education due to distance between their child's school and
home. Some schools reported vandalism and student frustration in regards to the change of scenery.
In 2001, busing for Charlotte students ended, but not without leaving a legacy. Since the termination
of busing, student test scores continue to rise, even surpassing those of other urban school districts
such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston (NPR, 2004).
Though mandatory busing ended, school districts continue to encourage the multicultural movement
by providing magnet programs for families who would like their child to attend another school. The
concept is the same as busing; however, participation is voluntary. Economically, the gap is
narrowing, balancing our communities. Forty percent of African Americans consider themselves to
be middle class, seventy five percent own their own homes, and two parent households earn just

made as the economy continues to control and group together families within the same income

It is not equal representation of "them" (minorities and women) by a university dominated by
"them" (white males). We want students to think of all people in the same way, to include all human
beings in the "us" group, to judge them by the same standards free from stereotypes and
generalizations. This is an idealistic vision, I know, but without ideals, where do we begin? Some
say we begin by requiring college students to take a certain number of classes focusing on women
and a certain number of classes about other races and cultures to supplement the core curriculum

have not received a lot of attention. Anti–racist orientation is very similar to the perspective of

The aims of multicultural education is to make sure any student, no matter their demographic,
receives and is provided the essential resources to get an education. Along with Banks, he discusses
that multicultural education "is to reform the school and other educational institutions so that
students from diverse racial, ethnic, and social–class groups will experience educational equality"
(p. 3). In today's schools, the students attending are changing, in regards to demographics, so
schools need to adjust to be able to teach to all students.
