Through my research, I found that there is an imbalance and selectivity that come with bias in
textbooks and curriculums (Sadker and Zittleman from Becoming a Multicultural Educator). I was
not surprised to find and imbalance of category representation within the textbook I investigated.
White males were consistently being "the hero" in the stories used throughout the chapters of
Journeys. Females were portrayed as needing saving, and African Americans as sidekicks to white
males or females. I believe that it is extremely difficult for textbooks to be fully multicultural. As a
future educator, I believe that it is part of my job to make sure that the texts and the curriculum that
I am using with my students is as culturally sensitive and as multicultural as possible for the benefit
of the students. My understanding of resonance in bias is that biases are represented everywhere and
it is important to know what they look like and are. It is challenging to try and meet the diverse
needs of every student, but with time and effort it will be worth while to make sure that I represent
as many cultures and diverse experiences within my lessons as possible. This investigation opened
by eyes to the true imbalance of multicultural representation within textbooks and I will now know

The substantial task of desegregation did not come without its struggles. Parents were faced with
issues of involvement in their child's education due to distance between their child's school and
home. Some schools reported vandalism and student frustration in regards to the change of scenery.
In 2001, busing for Charlotte students ended, but not without leaving a legacy. Since the termination
of busing, student test scores continue to rise, even surpassing those of other urban school districts

"them" (white males). We want students to think of all people in the same way, to include all human

Claim: After having researched the five approaches to multicultural education, I believe the best fit
for me would be Multicultural social justice education. I would feel the most comfortable teaching
in this way, because I feel it is the most beneficial to the students and our society as a whole.
Evidence: The message and purpose of this approach is so powerful, that I cannot help but be
inspired by it. "Its purpose is to prepare future citizens to take action to make society better serve the

system. It is a way to give every individual equal opportunity for education and learning. The topic
of Multicultural Education has been around for decades, but really started to take off after the Civil

The multicultural curriculum has its roots in the history of multicultural education which follows the

What is multicultural education?
My understanding of multicultural education has changed as a result of the readings, writings, and
discussions. At the very beginning of the semester, I initially said that multicultural education was
"including aspects from different cultures into curriculum." I thought multicultural education was
just about cultures from around the world, but now I know that is clearly not the whole picture.
Today, my understanding of multicultural education is about providing education to a much more
diverse group of people (ie. ability, race, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, language
and ELL's, etc) and teaching about the diversity to students.
The aims of multicultural education is to make sure any student, no matter their demographic,
receives and is provided the essential resources to get an education. Along with Banks, he discusses
that multicultural education "is to reform the school and other educational institutions so that
students from diverse racial, ethnic, and social–class groups will experience educational equality"
(p. 3). In today's schools, the students attending are changing, in regards to demographics, so
schools need to adjust to be able to teach to all students.
Multicultural education is probably not the best name for the kind of education that I envision,
however, I think there could be better. A better name for this kind of education would include the

Today, multilingualism has grown, especially in California, which educates approximately 1.35
million English–learners. Patricia Gandara, a research professor of education in the graduate school
of education at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a co–director of the Civil Rights
Project there, said" we've seen a tremendous growth in the numbers of dual –language programs
popping up in California, which now has more than any other state. Californians have become
comfortable with the fact that we have a very multicultural, multilingual population." Transitional–
bilingual education programs provide instruction in the English–learners' native languages with
separate English classes, before transitioning students into all–English instruction. With the tone
changing in favor of transitional–bilingual education in California repealing Proposition 227 could
gain popularity.
According to state Senator Lara, repealing Proposition 227 could have many positive impacts on the
state. California has one of the largest economies in the country, and for them to keep growing it

incorporate it into not only our classes, but into our curriculum and even more, our everyday
lessons? The education system is made up of a wildly diverse group of people. Students are sitting
in classrooms from all types of backgrounds, plus coming to school with a wide variety of needs.
Where at one point in time it was taboo to discuss one's differences, we were to focus on how we
are all alike. We as a group have come to acknowledge that it is okay to be different. We don't have
to be like everybody else. "As the world seems to be getting smaller and smaller with the
widespread use of technology, the importance of multicultural education in K–12 classrooms grows
exponentially. Students who have access via the internet to international gaming, shopping, and
social media sites need an even better understanding of the similarities and differences between their

families, and the very way that schools conceptualize the nature of teaching and learning" (Salili &
Hoosain 2005). Multiculturalism promotes acceptance of others while rejecting racism and other
