Bowenian Family Research Paper
REFLECTIONS ON BOWENIAN FAMILY THERAPY
This paper is an analysis of my family history in Bowenian terms. I will examine four generations
on my side of the family. I have included a genogram in the appendix to examine my personal
intergenerational patterns for assessment. I will also examine my family of origin in the categories
of race, ethnicity, religion, social class, geographic location, jobs, mental health and medical
concerns. The paper concludes comparing Bowenian ideas to other systemic concepts.
Race and Ethnicity Both my paternal and material families of origin are Caucasian. Ethnicity is
Scotch–Irish. With reasonable accuracy I have been able to determine that my maternal great–great–
grandfather (not reflected on this genogram) was living as a young man in Georgia during the Civil
War period. In my maternal line I am also told that there is a Cree Indian relative in my great–
grandparent line; time and place is unknown.
Religion
The grandparents of both sides of my family based their faith in fundamentalist Christianity. The
dominant religious beliefs are Congregationalism or modern day Church of Christ on the maternal
line primarily due to the influence of my maternal step–grandmother Georgia. My grandfather
(Uhlan) was influenced by her in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These lifestyle artifacts are evident in the frugalness that my paternal grandmother displays in
saving scraps of paper, food and a particular obsession with saving every penny she finds; behaviors
obviously related to lessons learned in that economic tragedy. My maternal grandparents were also
very frugal and avoided debt. Aunts and Uncles as baby boomers tended to be more acclimated to
living middle–class lifestyles and accumulating debt to do so. My brother has lived most of his life
under poverty conditions. I lived a spartan military lifestyle but with rising income I enjoy a

Abstract
A genogram is a diagram that shows family members and their relationships. The information can
sometimes include, ages, dates, deaths, and or geographic locations. Males are represented by
squares and females are represented by circles. The horizontal lines indicate marriage; while the
vertical line indicates parents and children. This paper outlines the assessment and analysis of the
three generation of the Jones and Sheffield family, relationships, structures, and health struggles.
The interview was conducted by myself (Katroya) and the interviewer was my mother (Sheryl).

Using this diagram approach qualifies health care providers to learn about the ways in which family
members interact with one another. It shows relationships, cutoffs, and triangles. It's also useful for
showing patterns between the father, mother, children and replicas of the past generations with some
repetitions. One thing I noticed within the genogram I constructed, is within the generation of the
1930's, three of my grandparents passed away within years near each other. Of the grandparents
passing away, three died from a type of cancer; while my sister is a cancer survivor. Another
reoccurrence I gathered was during the generation of the 1950's–1960's, there were more females
born than males on my mother side; while there were, more males born than females on my father
side. I've seen similar resemblance in my generation (1990's) to the 1960's compared to my mother
side of the family; there are more females than

Genogram Analysis: My Family's Views on Health and Illness
A genogram is a tool utilized in health care to help better understand a person's family history.
Similar to a family tree, a genogram looks at genetic influences, but it is also a "depiction of family
structure and dynamics, particularly the in the context of transgenerational patterns" (Chrzastowski,
2011). A genogram typically goes back three generations and can cover topics such as, religion,
culture, family relationships, communication styles, health and illness, etc. Genograms help us to
understand how a person's family's history helps to shape and influence their present situation and
any potential future situations. It is a useful tool in providing family–centered care. In psychiatric–

We were taken to the doctor when we were sick or injured and were taught to live a healthy
lifestyle. Although my family is still being influenced by my great grandparent's views on health
care to this day, they have begun to change over the generations. As the generations progress my
family has become more concerned with their overall health and more willing to seek health care
when needed. I believe a major influencer in this is that our society's views on health have been
changing as well. Over the past several generations, thanks to advancements in medical research and
technology, health care has become more normalized and much more accessible to the general

Genogram Paper On Family Analysis
When creating this diagram I was very confused in how I would represent the generations within my
family since I constructed the diagram with my grandparents, my parents, my sisters and I, but also
my nephew. It is awesome to see how our family is expanding, but the diagram also allowed me to
think of my family in the lens of Family Systems Theory and Therapy. We all have great
relationships with one another, but in no way am I saying that we are perfect. We have our
disagreements and dysfunctions like any other family, but we know how to work through them
effectively. Some emotions while completing the diagram consisted of sadness of the family
members that have passed, especially my maternal grandmother. It also helped me to somewhat
begin to realize that my paternal grandmother's life could be ending soon due to her age. She holds
an important within the family since she is the wise one who knows our family history and
continues to keep us close to one another. Also when creating the diagram, I was pondering on the
idea that there may also be some conflicts that I am unaware of due to the fact that my family may
have hidden conflicts from me as a young girl. My family and I have our dysfunctional ... Show

with my life but I was not fully sure. Now I have learned what some of the majors I was interested
in are about. Knowing what the majors are about helped me narrow the options down. Also, I have
learned more about my strengths and weaknesses. This told me what majors would suit me better to
my strengths and weaknesses. Throughout the process of the MyPlan, I have learned my strengths

The Holland Code is based on personality types and the MBTI is based on interests. The personality
type I got was ESFJ. The E stands for extrovert. Being an extrovert means I am outgoing and I tend
to draw energy from others around me. I am 93% an extrovert and 7% an introvert. S stands for
sensor. I tested 73% sensor and 27% initiative. Sensors are more likely to be realistic than idealistic.
They learn well from example, and are very observant. The F is feeler. Feelers believe that
compassion and empathy are more important than analysis and logic. They are guided by their
hearts. This is 100% true. I am always in my feels it seems like and I really care for others. The J
means judger. I scored a 53% on judger and 47% on perceiver, so it was about even. Judgers tend to
be organized, controlled and decisive, preferring order to chaos. Perceivers tend to be spontaneous,
impulsive and adaptive, preferring freedom to structure. The Holland code and MBTI really helped
me figure a lot out about myself. I am glad that I took these tests to figure out what I am interested
in. Some occupations I am interested in are Business Administration, Business Management,
Political Science, and Sports Management. Benefits for choosing Business Administration gives me

Assignment 1 Explain The Role Of Theory In Social Work...
1) Explain the role of theory in social work practice
Social workers use what they have learned to engage with their clients, conduct assessments,
develop interventions for problems, and terminate and evaluate each case (Rogers, 2013). There are
no simple formulas that are guaranteed to work for every client, but theories can provide a solid
starting point. The success of social work in practice requires social workers to have some
understanding of a variety of problems and to have the critical thinking skills to apply what they
have learned to complex situations (Gibson, 9/4/2014). This does not mean that social workers must
study every subject under the sun in order to be properly prepared for their clients. A social worker
might have never encountered a client's specific problem, but they might know how different
theories could be applied to that problem. A theory is a set of ideas or concepts that form a general
truth about the real world that can be supported by evidence obtained through the scientific method
(Gibson 9/4/2014; Rogers, 2013). A social worker ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Individuals are not independent of the environment in which they live, so their surroundings
naturally play a role in problems that they face. According to systems theory, human behavior is the
result of active interactions between people and their social systems (Rogers, 2013). Systems consist
of interdependent parts that when combined, make up an organized whole (Rogers, 2013). These
parts can be made up of individuals, or more rooted in ideas like policies or laws that create a
system. The theory is best applied to systems with readily identifiable roles like how a person's
family might have a mother, father, or sibling that create an important interaction in that system
(Gibson, 9/4/2014). There are also key concepts to keep in mind when using systems

A family is a word which is defined by one's personal experiences and emotions. Family means bliss
for one and dolor for another person. Socially, a family is defined by reciprocal relationships in
which persons are committed to one another (Halter, 2014). This paper outlines the analysis of four
generations of Batths' and Boparais' families and their relationships, health conditions, traditions,
and structures based on information gathered in an interview with Mandeep Batth, a third generation
member of both families. She defined family as everything for her and isn't about blood relations

Family Genogram Analysis
Family is a multifaceted entity that shapes an individual's identity throughout their life. The
interpersonal experiences gained through interactions often leads to the assumption of roles and
development of communication styles influencing the families' conflict handling and resolution
styles. In family counselling, a genogram is drawn out to understand family's developmental stage,
intergenerational patterns and to develop therapeutic interventions. This essay will present my
family genogram with an aim to reflect on the adjustment issue faced to transition into the role of a
new mother, whilst wrangling with the potentiality of losing my father to a life –threatening heart

In addition to basic counselling skills, family sculpting or narrative therapy may prove to be
effective therapeutic interventions. Family sculpting is a form of psychodrama that allows family to
enact their self –reflective position to gain some distance from their entrenched role (Sori & Hecker;
2003). This intervention proves to be particularly helpful in communicating the emotional need for
gratification, acknowledgement and appreciation which would in turn be effective in breaking the
vicious cycle of attacking and withdrawing. The second intervention which may be effective is
narrative therapy. Narrative therapy operates on the tenets of externalising an issue and re–authoring
the story, based on the client's strength (Flaskas, McCarthy & Sheehan, 2007). This intervention
involves achieving change by understanding the meaning assigned to the individual's experience,
helping the client liberate themselves from destructive or limiting stories to create an alternative
stories.
The above essay outlined the journey of handling transitions in my life as a new mother and
simultaneously dealing with the stressor of losing my father. Through the help of genogram it aimed
to conceptualise the stage of family development as the "child bearing" phase and discussed the

Genograms are an excellent way to show the multigenerational family as a whole. When looking at
a genogram, it is easier to see various pieces of information that exist within the family system.
When creating a genogram, it is necessary to obtain a great deal of information to allow for
accuracy as well as proficiency within the genogram. Overall, a genogram is helpful to find patterns
in the family system, and recognize traits that may have been unknown. Throughout this segment is

Some cancers are not avoidable, but things can be done to try and prevent it. Second of all, I noticed
that my grandmother and father both suffer from some type of emotional and anxiety disorders. This
is a good pattern to be aware of because this means there is a possibility that my children or myself
could develop an emotional disorder. Awareness of this fact helps to be able to recognize different
symptoms and behaviors, and know that an emotional disorder could be present. Understanding that
there is a history of physical abuse makes realize that I need to be aware of how I react and respond
to certain situations. When I evaluate the genogram by looking on my mother's side, I can notice a
pattern of different illnesses. Looking at my grandma, she had a rare nervous system disease along
with my aunt and uncle. This information is very helpful to me especially since I know that I am
right in line to potentially carry one of the illnesses. I can be aware of my physical functioning and
recognize if something is wrong. I can also see a history of different types of abuse, both physical
and emotional on both sides of the family. I think that watching this behavior within my family
makes it easier to be emotionally abusive to those I love in my own family. I know there have been

My Family 's Project : My Life Essay
My Family Genogram Project As I endured the prospect of creating a genogram, I allowed myself to
reflect and interpret the history and impacts that affected my family. During my review of my
genogram, I was able to consider my family within a multigenerational, diverse, and socio–political
context. By creating a genogram, a dialogue was started within my head and with my partner about
which family traits, issues, strengths, and resiliencies made me who I am today. Subsequently, this
dialogue made me aware that being raised in a small family has many advantages along with some
disadvantages when acquiring information about influences and the history of preceding
generations. Consequently, I did not have to contend with many conflicting recollections but I did
have to rely mostly on my own memory, public records, and journals to piece together my
genogram. Although all things discovered and recollected are not always fortunate on the surface,
they subsist as basis to my personal resilience and strength as a gay man.
The Family Since I am the index person, this genogram focuses on the "Zupka" family. I am a fifty
year old middleclass gay man who lives with his long term partner of seven years, so my
contemporary family is my partner Dale and our two cats Necropolis and Pandemonium. Dale has
minimal contact with his family and I have no contact with my surviving relatives. I have not met
any of Dale's family nor has he met any of my family. Dale's family is accepting of his

how the family deals with life time stressors (Hockenberry & Wilson, 2007). This paper outlines the

Religion is a significant part of their life. Wit's raise their children to be devoted Catholics. Every

Alina was diagnosed with breast cancer, they would pray to God for her recovery. Wits think that

Family System Analysis
The application of a family systems approach is recognized by clinicians in psychiatry and
psychotherapy as one of the most effective tools used to draw attention to family contexts and
understand family concerns. This use of systemic thinking provides the clinician with a model by
which to consider numerous factors that impact the family structure, the relationships and
interactions within the family, and how these factors influence and control the behaviours of those
members. Although a number of different theoretical models were developed over the years since
the 1950's (Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, 2016), there exists an underlying
understanding that the family unit is at the core of emotional functioning. ... Show more content on

The family genogram maps out three generations of Deborah's family. Generating a family
genogram empowers the individual to be heard, specifies relationships between members of the
family, guides the individual to identify the family's strengths and needs, and builds capacity within
the individual so that they can view reality as socially constructed (Chovil, 2009). For the purpose
of this analysis, Deborah has selected a time in her life in the late 1980's during which her family
was in turmoil. In particular, this analysis focused her attention on the specific relationship she had
with her mother. During that time, she was in secondary school and her family was impacted by
number of factors, including by not limited to her brother Phil's alcohol use, her Granny Olga's
illness, her brother Peter's onset of schizophrenia, her brother Paul's initial self–disclosure of his
sexual orientation as gay, and her family's financial state.
The goal of systems theory in this case is to help Deborah transform her behaviour patterns so that
they are more adaptive and productive (Family Solutions Institute, 2005). By exploring this time
using a family systems perspective, Deborah will see how her current ways interacting and relating
with others may be influenced by the way her entire family functioned during these difficult years
(Nichols, 2011).

Los Angeles County Economic Assessment
Los Angeles County Economic Assessment The modern day society evolves at a rapid pace and
these evolutions and quick developments do not tardy to generate a negative impact upon the health
of the individuals. More women working outside the home and an increased emphasis on career
materializes in a decreased attention to home cooked meals and their replacement with fast food
items, which are cost effective, but highly unhealthy. More time spent in front of the computer and
the television set translates into a sedentary life style, which also generates negative impacts upon
the health of the community. In light of these new traits of the society, the health care sector must
develop itself and address the new needs of the society. Furthermore, these new needs are not only
shaped by the changes in the life style of the population, but other traits as well. For instance, at a
demographic level, it is noted that the population ages at a rapid rate and requires more health care.
Then, at an economic level, it is noted how the internationalized economic crisis poses new threats
and limits the population's access to health care. In such a complex setting, it is necessary for health
care providers and policy makers to assess the specific traits of the society and deliver medical
services tailored to these characteristics and needs. A first step in this direction is that of assessing
the economics of a region, and this specific region is hereby represented by the Los Angeles

The Relationship Between Alice And Her Family
Alice has an overbearing mother who is very critical of her. This has obviously put a strain on their
relationship. Though much of the dynamics did not play out on screen it was implied that a rocky
relationship exists between Alice and her mother whereas the opposite was true between her and her
father. Alice has a lot of internalized frustration and anguish over her relationship with her parents
and her family, especially Michael. She drinks to suppress her true feelings and control her anxiety
as much as possible. The family as a whole is really struggling with boundaries and this is leading to
triangulation. These are normal patterns of a dysfunctional family. No one in the Green family had a
clear identity (not even Amy, the nanny; her role should have been clearly defined). These are signs
of diffused boundaries and enmeshment. Each member was stuck in the same position and there was
no room for individual growth and freedom until they went to treatment. Alice's alcohol dependency
has impacted her family greatly. Michael feels inadequate because he can't fix his family's problems.
He believes that all problems are fixable and since he is the man in house, it is his job to protect his
family and fix his wife. Fixing is what drives this family. It shows the dysfunction in the family
when they look away and avoid conflict rather than dealing with it head–on. Generally Michael is
doing the fixing and believes that by "fixing" the problems they can move on like nothing

The Family Boundary Ambiguity
Family boundary ambiguity can be defined as confusion about who is in and who is out of the
family system, because of the physical or psychological absence of one or more of the members
(Boss & Greenburg, 1984). Boundary ambiguity has been studied in families in which the gain or
loss of a family member is vague such as missing–in–action families (e.g., Boss 1977, 1980),
divorced families (e.g., Peterson & Christensen, 2002; Rosenburg & Guttman, 2001), remarried
families (e.g., Hobart, 1988; Stewart, 2005), and family caregivers to Alzheimer's patients (e.g.,
Kaplan & Boss, 1999; Sherman & Boss, 2007). Few studies have examined boundary ambiguity in
foster families, despite the frequent addition and loss of members within the household.
Foster care is usually intended to be a temporary placement; reunification with the family of origin
is the case goal for over 50% of cases. For other children, foster care is intended to be a long–term
care solution. Placement in a foster family can range from several months to several years (U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, 2012b). Foster families can be diverse and complex
family systems; foster parents may also have biological, adopted, or step children who permanently
live in the home at least part of the time (referred to hereafter as permanent children). In addition,
foster carers may feel tension between being a parent to foster children, and conceptualizing foster
care as a job, which can lead to more permeable

Course Date Genogram A genogram refers to a pictorial demonstration of a family's medical history
and relationships. It is a physical and graphic picture that outlines the patterns of a family over a
given period, usually three generations (Boyd, 2008). A genogram as a family assessment tool map
the family structure, take account of family data and delineate relationships. It is a family health
tree, which provides knowledge regarding familial and genetic disease besides highlighting family
risk aspects and strengths. A genogram goes past a conventional family tree through making the user
to envisage psychological aspects and hereditary blueprints that interrupt relationships
(Hockenberry & Winkelstein, 2009). A genogram is useful in determination of rhythmic blueprints
of conduct besides recognition of hereditary predispositions. A genogram is a significant tool that
helps in collection of data regarding a young individual's family. The visual display of a given
family can assist in indentifying themes or patterns that influence a family (Al–Yaman, Bryant &
Sargeant, 2002). In this regard, a genogram is a valuable evaluation tool for learning about the
history of family. Founded on the idea of a family tree, a genogram entails data concerning three or
more generations of a given family, that offers a longitudinal perspective. As a visual diagram of the

Caroline and Nate Matthews were the couple chosen for this analysis. Over the course of their 11
years of marriage, the Matthews have had two children ages 4 and 7, in Gainesville, GA. At age 35,
the Matthews priority currently is raising their children, while figuring out how to maintain a good
marriage relationship themselves.
Procedure
To analyze the Matthews' level of marital health and predict what is to come of their future, over the
course of 2 weeks, several instruments designed to measure specific aspects of a marriage were
administered along with a co–joint and individual interview. The area of interest from the
information gathered was what the (a) individuality, (b) emotional tone, and (d) interaction in the
Matthews' marriage seems to be.
Measures
First, the Matthews participated in a 20–question co–joint interview. The questions were specifically
created to get detailed information about aspects of their early marriage as well as where they are
currently. After, completing the

Family / Community Care Plan
Family/ Community Care Plan and Self–Care Plan The Riverez family has faced many struggles
throughout their lives. They currently reside in an area that has brought them many stresses.
Financially they are unable to move to a safer neighborhood and they do not receive any support
from their families. Both parents dropped out of high school, which is causing a financial strain on
their family. Mr. Riverez is working two
Part–time jobs to try and support the family. Although Julio has somewhat of a work ethic he is
quite discouraged because of making such low wages and having to work 2 jobs to provide for his

Due to the financial strain they are unable to provide proper nourishment for their family and on
many occasions, have not been able to maintain their utilities because of unpaid bills. There are
several interventions that need to put into place to help the family to heal. For one Quianna could
benefit from being placed in a group setting with people with similar PTSD symptoms so she can
realize she has issues that need to be addressed. In addition she needs to see the negative impact she
is having on her children's future. Julio needs to understand the importance of maintaining his health
for his and his family's future. Julio would also benefit from understanding the importance of
learning to speak the English language. Both Quianna and Julio could benefit from understanding
how reconnecting with their extended families could help bring a positive experience to their
children's future. Their eldest son Rico is having issues staying in school and needs to see the
significance of staying in school and how it will impact his future. Most importantly the Riverez
family needs to be shown that there are safer places to raise their family. Everyone comes from a
different culture and it is imperative to understand their culture and abide by the ethics that are put
into place. The Riverz family has faced much trauma in their lives and it is important to address
each problem individually. As a practitioner it

Developing A Working Alliance With Each Family Member
According to Goldenberg and Goldenberg (2002) the key to effective relationship counselling is to
build a working alliance with each family member. This essay will discuss the family issues of a
married couple Anna and Mick and their Jason who is experiencing sleeping difficulties.
Furthermore the essay will asses their lack of interaction, disconnection as a family and the
imbalances and impact experienced by Anna .The use of circular questions will be used imbedded
into the session identifying underlying issues to further implement strategies ensuring the balanced
in a family system is met. Mick, Anna have been married for the last ten year have brought their son
Jason who is seven years old to counselling as he is facing sleeping difficulties in the last month.
Anna expressed her exhaustion in relation to waking up every night lately and having to console
Jason when he is crying, Jason is saying that he is having nightmares from watching scary movies
with his father at night and this is a contributing factor around his sleeping difficulties. Ann has
found out she is pregnant and expressed her concerns about Mick not helping her with Jason and
that she needs to do everything on her own an she cant do this no longer and that things need to
change. Mick works long hours and come home very night exhausted himself wanting to unwind
watching scary or action movies which contributes to Jason sleep difficulties. Mick believes that if

The Bowenian Approach to Family Therapy Essay example
The Bowenian Approach to Family Therapy Summer D. Parrott Liberty University March 1, 2015
Abstract This paper will summarize the theory of family systems developed by Murray Bowen. It
will describe the eight key components to Bowenian therapy and the techniques used during
practice. Strengths and limitations will be exposed, followed by a summary of the importance of
integration between psychology and family systems theory. Keywords: Bowen, integration, family
systems theory Part I Introduction Bowen family systems theory is based on the view that the family
is an emotional unit. The theory uses systems thinking to describe the interactions and relationships
within the family. Given families are deeply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those who are undifferentiated, on the other hand, react emotionally and impetuously. Unable to
maintain their own autonomy, they become fused with others in their family. Their emotional
patterns are in sync with other members and they have a difficult time separating what they feel
from the emotions of the family unit (Kerr & Bowen, 1988). Intelligence does not determine the
level of differentiation. Highly intelligent people can have low differentiation. The level of
differentiation refers to the degree in which a family member can think and act for themselves while
dealing with an emotional issue (Kerr & Bowen, 1988). Intimate relationships often include bouts of
anxiety. In families, as the anxiety increases between two people, they make seek to bring in a third
person to attempt to gain stability. This process is known as triangulation. With the involvement of
the third person, the anxiety is spread across more people and appears to lighten. While the tension
may appear to decrease, the possibility of increasing the original problem persists. With three
players now involved, the original dyad fails to solve the problem which caused the anxiety to begin
with (Bevcar, 2009). Bowen researchers consider triangles to be a normal part of relationships.
Triangles are the basis of Bowen's multigenerational theory (Rabstejnek, 2012). If anxiety and
reactivity can be properly managed, triangles

Family Analysis – The Andersons
A family's structure is as unique as each individual that is a part of it. In order to adequately assist a
family a comprehensive understanding of their behavior, development, and concerns must be
formulated. Though a holistic and clinical understanding of the family does not offer any specific
therapy interventions, the insight it reveals does help guide the clinician to recognize what type of
intervention might be most effective when working with the family. This paper will outline a case in
order to integrate theory and evidence based practice as they apply to social work practice. The case
of the Andersons will be presented in this paper, though names and details have been changed to
protect client confidentiality.
The couple is Sergeant Scott Anderson (age 26) and Mrs. Christina Anderson (age 23) (please see
Appendix A for a complete genogram of the Andersons, plus extended family), who have been
married for four years. They are of modest socioeconomic status (Sgt. Anderson maintains the rank
of E–5) and lives in a single–family home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Sgt. Anderson returned
from a 10–month deployment to Afghanistan approximately six months ago, though both Scott and
Christina mention that they've been experiencing problems for at least two years. Both Sgt.
Anderson and Christina report that they have a history of instability in their relationship, though

When it comes to Frank's children, these three traits are displayed. Two of the three characteristics
have not been passed down thru the generations. Gil married a woman that is typically like his
mother, and that his father frank probably married a woman that was like his mother. Karen and
Marilyn are a lot a like they are both more quiet and reserved compared to Gil's sisters. Gil's father
was or seems to have had at one point an addiction to gambling and possibly drinking when his
children were younger. He was not nice to his wife he spoke to her as if she was lower than him,
like in the old days when the men were in charge and the women use to stay at home and just raise
the children and be a homemaker. There was a lot of distance between Frank and his children; he
was not always there for his children when they were younger. Part of the reason Frank was this
way with his children was because when he was about fifteen his father threw him out of the house
and Frank's father was a bad influence on him growing up so Frank did not really know how to be a
father to his own children. This in turn caused his children to have patterns of anxiety. You can see
anxiety in the four children; they all worry about everything and anything especially their children
and how they are raising them. According to McGoldrick, et al. (2008) families repeat themselves

With every relative tolerating the limits of their part, others are not free the capacity to venture
outside of their border and develop and develop into another part. Remaining inside one 's path adds
to a positive family working, yet it can likewise prompt to the defective arrangement of
correspondence that represses develop and brings about stagnation. A therapist could utilize a visual
guide that may assist the relatives with connecting dots that might not unite before (McGoldrick,
Preto, and Carter, 2016). Genograms can help restorative experts evaluate their self–improvement,
family connections and stick point connections that are unfortunate and immature. Genograms can
likewise give data on family restorative conditions and ailments and pinpoint maladies that keep
running in families. Nichols, (2017) states that genograms can be restorative all by itself. Utilizing a
family genogram in a clinical setting can fill in as an impetus for the further examination concerning
a man 's underlying foundations, and also open up lines of correspondence among relatives
(Milewski–Hertlein, 2001). A family genogram can permit a man to all the more plainly locate their
particular character through observing the historical backdrop of those before (Khait, 2000). Picking

Spiritual Assessment Methods
Summary The article concerned itself with describing five spiritual assessment methods that may be
used in a client–practitioner setting. Hodge (2005), thought it important to discuss these tools,
because when hospitalized adults were surveyed, regarding the role of spirituality in their treatment,
they responded that spirituality was an important coping mechanism that aided in keeping them
going (40%). When asked how they coped with their illnesses, 43% immediately indicated that they
saw spirituality was an important factor in helping them do so (Hodge, 2005, p. 322). The five
assessment methods reviewed included: (1) spiritual histories, (2) spiritual life maps, (3) spiritual

317). This method is client focused with little input from the practitioner. The third method spiritual
genograms utilizes the image of a family tree to tract the spiritual history of the client's family, from
past to present. This method also encourages interaction between the practitioner and client (p. 317–
319). The fourth method spiritual ecomaps focuses on the client's current spiritual relationships and
their acceptance of spiritual assets, such as prayer, worship, scripture, etc., (p. 319). The strength of
this method is the ease in identifying and gathering current data about how the client views the use
of spiritual assets, in his treatment. The fifth method spiritual echograms, focuses on the client's
current spiritual relationships while incorporating connections from the client's past, thereby,
providing some historical information from the client's family, faith community, and rituals (p. 322).
This article was of interest to me, because as a practicing Christian Life Coach, it was helpful to
learn about assessment methods, specifically designed to capture the client's spiritual inclinations,
and to learn how that information can be used to help them achieve their goals.

Family Therapy: Family Therapeutic Approach
First, family systems therapy was theorized by Murray Bowen, that an individual can change his
own intellectual mind functioning from an emotional state of mind. "Second, the family therapy
system primary focus is to change the dysfunctional breakdown, by using the therapeutic approach
intended to identify and explain why and how things happen within the family" (Family systems,
2011). Next, the family systems therapeutic approach is designed to figure out how to bring families
together, by detailing their interactions and the role each family member plays. By the same token,
the goal is to help change the family structure by helping them understand what contributed to their
breakdown and the change in the relationship. Not to mention, each ... Show more content on

Based on the medical history of my family, mental illness seems to be a genetic contribution.
However, I do believe that the experiences previously mentioned have had a significant impact on
the women within my family. Furthermore, these experiences can be seen as liable for the condition
of various relationships within my family. To begin, the relationship between my grandmother and
mother became strained further after my mother had her second child. During this time, my mother
had become dependent of both alcohol, and illicit drugs. Because of this dependency, my
grandmother felt it would be in everyone's best interest if she obtained custody of my older brother
and sister. After my grandmother was granted custody of my older siblings, my mother and
grandmother ceased communication for several years. This lack of communication had a larger
impact than either assumed it would. As a result of their abrupt separation from our mother, my
siblings began to harbor ill feelings towards her. They felt as though they had been abandoned, and
she made no effort to remain in their lives. Currently, my mother and brother have yet to reconcile
their relationship. I would define my relationship with my mother to be close but hostile. Being the
only one of my mother's children that she raised, I believe that my experiences as

Family Psychology : Are A Proper Tool Be Used
In family psychology genograms are a proper tool be used. Using a genogram can help figure out
patterns that have occurred in a family with the future, present, and the past. Therapist and clinicians
uses the genograms for many reasons. According to Butler (2008), "As a method to track and
monitor family pat–terns, the genogram clarifies information about the family in a broader context"
(p.175). Genograms help an individual and families have visual picture of healthy and unhealthy
patterns that run in the family. When preparing my own genogram it was a difficult process to gain
information on both sides of my family. I started with the basic information starting with my parents
and siblings. Then when I started to expand out to the extending family it was tough due to I didn't
know much about my grandparent on both sides. To get detail information I had to ask my cousin
from my father side and my aunt on my mother side. I didn't get all the information I needed but
when going through the genogram I learned that names were used over and over such as John and
William on my father side. I also learned something that was fascinating to me, which was my
father mother name was Ruby Belle Loving and my mother mother's name was Ruby Belle Luttrell.
This is how I got my middle name and I am very thankful that my first name didn't turn out to be
Ruby.
When looking through my family genogram I can right away identify a pattern to predispositions to
genetics of health issues.

Family therapy, (equally recognized or referred to as marriage and family therapy, couple and
family therapy, family systems therapy and even family counseling), is a form of treatment
(psychotherapy) that promotes growth, development and change within families and/or couples who
are personally involved. With that being said, this distinct form of therapy has a tendency of
observing change in terms of the structures of communication or interaction between members of
the family as well as does it ultimately highlight relationships within the family as a rather
substantial component regarding psychological health. Through placing such emphasis on the
qualitative relationships of all families, we will compare two therapies/therapists in particular, ...

My Genogram Assignment
During the process of completing the genogram assignment I learned a lot about my family. It
helped me to make connections and put things into perspective. My grandmother and grandfather on
my paternal side of the family had 13 children. There are 7 boys and 6 girls. Among the thirteen
children there are one set of twins and they are the oldest. My father passed last year from ongoing
health issues so I relied much on the information my uncles provided to me. A trend I noticed is that
my dad & two of his brothers were the only ones to migrate to America. Unfortunately, the
remaining 10 children are still living in Ivory Coast, West Africa and I do not have a relationship
with them. So I have limited information displayed on the genogram regarding them. Another trend
is that all three brothers married an American woman and had children. I found it interesting that my
uncle Armand and my father happened to marry women who were ten years older than themselves.
The next trend I noticed is that all three brothers got a divorce from their first wife and remarried to
an Ivorian woman. In addition, to the divorce the reason was due to infidelity on their behalf. The
trend I also noticed as well is that they all obtained a Bachelor's degree and have successful careers.

Genogram And Blessing : My Personal Definition Of Family
There are many definitions of family, but the definition I feel many of us relate to is, "A
fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children"
(Blessing, n.d.). My personal definition of family is any person or persons one wants to consider
family. Every family has their own unique way of interacting and connecting with one another. In
the following paragraphs, I will discuss my analysis of my families' strengths and stressors based on
both the genogram and ecomap that I have constructed.
Analysis of Family Connections My internal family consists of myself, my husband, and our two
sons. Currently the four of us live in the same household. I feel that myself and my husband both
have a strong connection with each other and with each of our sons, but in different ways. Our two
sons are five years apart in age, and they have completely different interests, which has affected the
strength of their relationship. As shown in the ecomap, each of us is busy with work, school, friends,
and recreation. Unfortunately, due to these responsibilities outside of the home we don't spend a lot
of time together as a family, which is one reason I feel our connection as a family is getting weaker.
Another reason I feel that our connection isn't as strong is because we all have different interests.
For example, our older son enjoys video games and disc golfing, and our younger son enjoys music,
friends and fashion.

I've learned the goals of a social worker because of this class. Professional Roles and
Responsibilities states that a social worker "must remind our nation and its leaders about how the
social work profession helped make the United States a compassionate world leader in the last
century and that social workers continue to advocate for social justice and provide necessary
services for all citizens" (2015). I have appreciated this class and its objectives. Helping troubled
families was one of the best social workers classes I have had taken. This is because I learned more
about myself, my family, and the helping profession. I give thanks to challenges when they come
my way. If it wasn't for the challenges I experienced in this course, I wouldn't have grown or learned
as much as I did. Although challenges can be difficult to manage, if you have a life free of
challenges, you would never grow and never be able to live up to your full potential. When I look
back on every challenge I faced through this class, I notice they have played an important role in my
life. This course helped me grow in a personal and professional way. I can't wait to continue to learn
more about myself, my family and the helping profession. Leaving this class, I feel well prepared to

How you ever feel that we, as sons or daughter tend to repeat our parent mistakes? I have always

She is really kind, strict, helpful and with a very big heart. Although we had our differences when I

One of the things I could always count with my mother is her knowledge for medicine. She always
knows what medicine I can take and what I need to do in order to get better. My mother used to be
the hospital accountant in the pharmacy department for almost 20 years, so she is pretty
knowledgeable when it comes to medicine.
My father is the oldest son of his family. He has nine siblings, four brothers and five sisters. He is a
very hard worker individual. He started working at a very young age in order to help his family.
Right after he graduated from high school, my father enrolled in the air force. My father is a very
persistent man; he does not give up easily. He is a very happy go lucky person. He is really social
and outgoing, always making jokes, telling stories and making other people laugh. He is really
passionate about drawing and designing things. He enjoys working with his hands and going
outdoors. He is more adventurous than my mother.
My relationship with my father has been different. He used to drink a lot while when I was younger,
but although he would come under those conditions, he still would have the time and dedication to

Comparing Bowen's Family Systems Theory And The Structural...
Comparing Bowen's family systems theory and Minuchin's structural family theory we will outline
several fundamental categories for analysis with Goldenberg & Goldenberg (2012) as our guide. We
also contrast the history and theoretical orientation of both men to garner a deeper understanding of
their theories. Finally we will consider integrating elements of both theories and how this makes us
more effective practitioners. Prior to establishing his theory post–World War II, Bowen studied the
origins of schizophrenia and postulated that transgenerational maternal enmeshment was its cause.
Bowen's thoughts on this were similar to those on individuation. Though he believed psychoanalysis
was too individualized for family therapy, the psychoanalytic notion that one's interactions are
driven by unconscious motivation was the theory's germ of inspiration. Goldenberg & Goldenberg
(2012) write that the most essential piece Bowen's family systems theory is that the individual needs
to resolve anxiety arising from their family of origin to find a sense of individuality. This concept is
traceable to Bowen's psychoanalytic roots as a psychiatrist. Overall, Bowen focused on triadic
relationships for therapeutic intervention, predominately the parental subgroup and a child. He
looked at how low self–esteemed members of a family became vulnerable to triangulation. They
then became enmeshed in their family and forwarded a legacy of chronic anxiety. Classic
psychoanalysis agrees that issues

Bowenian Family Research Paper

  • 1. Bowenian Family Research Paper REFLECTIONS ON BOWENIAN FAMILY THERAPY This paper is an analysis of my family history in Bowenian terms. I will examine four generations on my side of the family. I have included a genogram in the appendix to examine my personal intergenerational patterns for assessment. I will also examine my family of origin in the categories of race, ethnicity, religion, social class, geographic location, jobs, mental health and medical concerns. The paper concludes comparing Bowenian ideas to other systemic concepts. Race and Ethnicity Both my paternal and material families of origin are Caucasian. Ethnicity is Scotch–Irish. With reasonable accuracy I have been able to determine that my maternal great–great– grandfather (not reflected on this genogram) was living as a young man in Georgia during the Civil War period. In my maternal line I am also told that there is a Cree Indian relative in my great– grandparent line; time and place is unknown. Religion The grandparents of both sides of my family based their faith in fundamentalist Christianity. The dominant religious beliefs are Congregationalism or modern day Church of Christ on the maternal line primarily due to the influence of my maternal step–grandmother Georgia. My grandfather (Uhlan) was influenced by her in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Family Genogram Annotated Bibliography Family Genogram Paper Katroya Jones Florida State College at Jacksonville Abstract A genogram is a diagram that shows family members and their relationships. The information can sometimes include, ages, dates, deaths, and or geographic locations. Males are represented by squares and females are represented by circles. The horizontal lines indicate marriage; while the vertical line indicates parents and children. This paper outlines the assessment and analysis of the three generation of the Jones and Sheffield family, relationships, structures, and health struggles. The interview was conducted by myself (Katroya) and the interviewer was my mother (Sheryl). Family Genogram "The family life cycle phases" was very relatable once I began to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using this diagram approach qualifies health care providers to learn about the ways in which family members interact with one another. It shows relationships, cutoffs, and triangles. It's also useful for showing patterns between the father, mother, children and replicas of the past generations with some repetitions. One thing I noticed within the genogram I constructed, is within the generation of the 1930's, three of my grandparents passed away within years near each other. Of the grandparents passing away, three died from a type of cancer; while my sister is a cancer survivor. Another reoccurrence I gathered was during the generation of the 1950's–1960's, there were more females born than males on my mother side; while there were, more males born than females on my father side. I've seen similar resemblance in my generation (1990's) to the 1960's compared to my mother side of the family; there are more females than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Family Genogram Analysis Paper Genogram Analysis: My Family's Views on Health and Illness A genogram is a tool utilized in health care to help better understand a person's family history. Similar to a family tree, a genogram looks at genetic influences, but it is also a "depiction of family structure and dynamics, particularly the in the context of transgenerational patterns" (Chrzastowski, 2011). A genogram typically goes back three generations and can cover topics such as, religion, culture, family relationships, communication styles, health and illness, etc. Genograms help us to understand how a person's family's history helps to shape and influence their present situation and any potential future situations. It is a useful tool in providing family–centered care. In psychiatric– mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although my family is still being influenced by my great grandparent's views on health care to this day, they have begun to change over the generations. As the generations progress my family has become more concerned with their overall health and more willing to seek health care when needed. I believe a major influencer in this is that our society's views on health have been changing as well. • 5. Genogram Paper On Family Analysis When creating this diagram I was very confused in how I would represent the generations within my family since I constructed the diagram with my grandparents, my parents, my sisters and I, but also my nephew. It is awesome to see how our family is expanding, but the diagram also allowed me to think of my family in the lens of Family Systems Theory and Therapy. We all have great relationships with one another, but in no way am I saying that we are perfect. We have our disagreements and dysfunctions like any other family, but we know how to work through them effectively. Some emotions while completing the diagram consisted of sadness of the family members that have passed, especially my maternal grandmother. It also helped me to somewhat begin to realize that my paternal grandmother's life could be ending soon due to her age. She holds an important within the family since she is the wise one who knows our family history and continues to keep us close to one another. Also when creating the diagram, I was pondering on the idea that there may also be some conflicts that I am unaware of due to the fact that my family may have hidden conflicts from me as a young girl. Now I have learned what some of the majors I was interested in are about. Knowing what the majors are about helped me narrow the options down. Also, I have learned more about my strengths and weaknesses. This told me what majors would suit me better to my strengths and weaknesses. Throughout the process of the MyPlan, I have learned my strengths and weaknesses, personality and traits, more occupations, dream career, and a genogram. • 7. Assignment 1 Explain The Role Of Theory In Social Work... 1) Explain the role of theory in social work practice Social workers use what they have learned to engage with their clients, conduct assessments, develop interventions for problems, and terminate and evaluate each case (Rogers, 2013). There are no simple formulas that are guaranteed to work for every client, but theories can provide a solid starting point. The success of social work in practice requires social workers to have some understanding of a variety of problems and to have the critical thinking skills to apply what they have learned to complex situations (Gibson, 9/4/2014). This does not mean that social workers must study every subject under the sun in order to be properly prepared for their clients. A social worker might have never encountered a client's specific problem, but they might know how different theories could be applied to that problem. A theory is a set of ideas or concepts that form a general truth about the real world that can be supported by evidence obtained through the scientific method (Gibson 9/4/2014; Rogers, 2013). A social worker ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Individuals are not independent of the environment in which they live, so their surroundings naturally play a role in problems that they face. According to systems theory, human behavior is the result of active interactions between people and their social systems (Rogers, 2013). Systems consist of interdependent parts that when combined, make up an organized whole (Rogers, 2013). These parts can be made up of individuals, or more rooted in ideas like policies or laws that create a system. The theory is best applied to systems with readily identifiable roles like how a person's family might have a mother, father, or sibling that create an important interaction in that system (Gibson, 9/4/2014). Family means bliss for one and dolor for another person. Socially, a family is defined by reciprocal relationships in which persons are committed to one another (Halter, 2014). The interpersonal experiences gained through interactions often leads to the assumption of roles and development of communication styles influencing the families' conflict handling and resolution styles. In family counselling, a genogram is drawn out to understand family's developmental stage, intergenerational patterns and to develop therapeutic interventions. In addition to basic counselling skills, family sculpting or narrative therapy may prove to be effective therapeutic interventions. Family sculpting is a form of psychodrama that allows family to enact their self –reflective position to gain some distance from their entrenched role (Sori & Hecker; 2003). This intervention proves to be particularly helpful in communicating the emotional need for gratification, acknowledgement and appreciation which would in turn be effective in breaking the vicious cycle of attacking and withdrawing. The second intervention which may be effective is narrative therapy. Narrative therapy operates on the tenets of externalising an issue and re–authoring the story, based on the client's strength (Flaskas, McCarthy & Sheehan, 2007). This intervention involves achieving change by understanding the meaning assigned to the individual's experience, helping the client liberate themselves from destructive or limiting stories to create an alternative stories. • 11. My Family 's Project : My Life Essay My Family Genogram Project As I endured the prospect of creating a genogram, I allowed myself to reflect and interpret the history and impacts that affected my family. During my review of my genogram, I was able to consider my family within a multigenerational, diverse, and socio–political context. By creating a genogram, a dialogue was started within my head and with my partner about which family traits, issues, strengths, and resiliencies made me who I am today. Subsequently, this dialogue made me aware that being raised in a small family has many advantages along with some disadvantages when acquiring information about influences and the history of preceding generations. Consequently, I did not have to contend with many conflicting recollections but I did have to rely mostly on my own memory, public records, and journals to piece together my genogram. Although all things discovered and recollected are not always fortunate on the surface, they subsist as basis to my personal resilience and strength as a gay man. The Family Since I am the index person, this genogram focuses on the "Zupka" family. I am a fifty year old middleclass gay man who lives with his long term partner of seven years, so my contemporary family is my partner Dale and our two cats Necropolis and Pandemonium. • 13. Family System Analysis Paper Family System Analysis The application of a family systems approach is recognized by clinicians in psychiatry and psychotherapy as one of the most effective tools used to draw attention to family contexts and understand family concerns. This use of systemic thinking provides the clinician with a model by which to consider numerous factors that impact the family structure, the relationships and interactions within the family, and how these factors influence and control the behaviours of those members. Although a number of different theoretical models were developed over the years since the 1950's (Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, 2016), there exists an underlying understanding that the family unit is at the core of emotional functioning. ... Generating a family genogram empowers the individual to be heard, specifies relationships between members of the family, guides the individual to identify the family's strengths and needs, and builds capacity within the individual so that they can view reality as socially constructed (Chovil, 2009). For the purpose of this analysis, Deborah has selected a time in her life in the late 1980's during which her family was in turmoil. In particular, this analysis focused her attention on the specific relationship she had with her mother. During that time, she was in secondary school and her family was impacted by number of factors, including by not limited to her brother Phil's alcohol use, her Granny Olga's illness, her brother Peter's onset of schizophrenia, her brother Paul's initial self–disclosure of his sexual orientation as gay, and her family's financial state. The goal of systems theory in this case is to help Deborah transform her behaviour patterns so that they are more adaptive and productive (Family Solutions Institute, 2005). By exploring this time using a family systems perspective, Deborah will see how her current ways interacting and relating with others may be influenced by the way her entire family functioned during these difficult years (Nichols, 2011). ... More time spent in front of the computer and the television set translates into a sedentary life style, which also generates negative impacts upon the health of the community. In light of these new traits of the society, the health care sector must develop itself and address the new needs of the society. Furthermore, these new needs are not only shaped by the changes in the life style of the population, but other traits as well. For instance, at a demographic level, it is noted that the population ages at a rapid rate and requires more health care. Then, at an economic level, it is noted how the internationalized economic crisis poses new threats and limits the population's access to health care. In such a complex setting, it is necessary for health care providers and policy makers to assess the specific traits of the society and deliver medical services tailored to these characteristics and needs. Though much of the dynamics did not play out on screen it was implied that a rocky relationship exists between Alice and her mother whereas the opposite was true between her and her father. Alice has a lot of internalized frustration and anguish over her relationship with her parents and her family, especially Michael. She drinks to suppress her true feelings and control her anxiety as much as possible. The family as a whole is really struggling with boundaries and this is leading to triangulation. These are normal patterns of a dysfunctional family. No one in the Green family had a clear identity (not even Amy, the nanny; her role should have been clearly defined). These are signs of diffused boundaries and enmeshment. Each member was stuck in the same position and there was no room for individual growth and freedom until they went to treatment. Alice's alcohol dependency has impacted her family greatly. Michael feels inadequate because he can't fix his family's problems. He believes that all problems are fixable and since he is the man in house, it is his job to protect his family and fix his wife. Fixing is what drives this family. It shows the dysfunction in the family when they look away and avoid conflict rather than dealing with it head–on. • 19. The Family Boundary Ambiguity Family boundary ambiguity can be defined as confusion about who is in and who is out of the family system, because of the physical or psychological absence of one or more of the members (Boss & Greenburg, 1984). Boundary ambiguity has been studied in families in which the gain or loss of a family member is vague such as missing–in–action families (e.g., Boss 1977, 1980), divorced families (e.g., Peterson & Christensen, 2002; Rosenburg & Guttman, 2001), remarried families (e.g., Hobart, 1988; Stewart, 2005), and family caregivers to Alzheimer's patients (e.g., Kaplan & Boss, 1999; Sherman & Boss, 2007). Few studies have examined boundary ambiguity in foster families, despite the frequent addition and loss of members within the household. Foster care is usually intended to be a temporary placement; reunification with the family of origin is the case goal for over 50% of cases. For other children, foster care is intended to be a long–term care solution. Placement in a foster family can range from several months to several years (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012b). Foster families can be diverse and complex family systems; foster parents may also have biological, adopted, or step children who permanently live in the home at least part of the time (referred to hereafter as permanent children). In addition, foster carers may feel tension between being a parent to foster children, and conceptualizing foster care as a job, which can lead to more permeable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Their emotional patterns are in sync with other members and they have a difficult time separating what they feel from the emotions of the family unit (Kerr & Bowen, 1988). Intelligence does not determine the level of differentiation. Highly intelligent people can have low differentiation. The level of differentiation refers to the degree in which a family member can think and act for themselves while dealing with an emotional issue (Kerr & Bowen, 1988). Intimate relationships often include bouts of anxiety. In families, as the anxiety increases between two people, they make seek to bring in a third person to attempt to gain stability. This process is known as triangulation. With the involvement of the third person, the anxiety is spread across more people and appears to lighten. While the tension may appear to decrease, the possibility of increasing the original problem persists. With three players now involved, the original dyad fails to solve the problem which caused the anxiety to begin with (Bevcar, 2009). • 34. My Genogram Assignment During the process of completing the genogram assignment I learned a lot about my family. It helped me to make connections and put things into perspective. My grandmother and grandfather on my paternal side of the family had 13 children. There are 7 boys and 6 girls. Among the thirteen children there are one set of twins and they are the oldest. My father passed last year from ongoing health issues so I relied much on the information my uncles provided to me. A trend I noticed is that my dad & two of his brothers were the only ones to migrate to America. Unfortunately, the remaining 10 children are still living in Ivory Coast, West Africa and I do not have a relationship with them. So I have limited information displayed on the genogram regarding them. Another trend is that all three brothers married an American woman and had children. I found it interesting that my uncle Armand and my father happened to marry women who were ten years older than themselves. The next trend I noticed is that all three brothers got a divorce from their first wife and remarried to an Ivorian woman. In addition, to the divorce the reason was due to infidelity on their behalf. The trend I also noticed as well is that they all obtained a Bachelor's degree and have successful careers. All three men had a hostile relationship with their ex–wives due to their role of infidelity within the marriage. This affected how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 35. Genogram And Blessing : My Personal Definition Of Family There are many definitions of family, but the definition I feel many of us relate to is, "A fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children" (Blessing, n.d.). My personal definition of family is any person or persons one wants to consider family. Every family has their own unique way of interacting and connecting with one another. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss my analysis of my families' strengths and stressors based on both the genogram and ecomap that I have constructed. Analysis of Family Connections My internal family consists of myself, my husband, and our two sons. Currently the four of us live in the same household. I feel that myself and my husband both have a strong connection with each other and with each of our sons, but in different ways. Our two sons are five years apart in age, and they have completely different interests, which has affected the strength of their relationship. As shown in the ecomap, each of us is busy with work, school, friends, and recreation. Unfortunately, due to these responsibilities outside of the home we don't spend a lot of time together as a family, which is one reason I feel our connection as a family is getting weaker. Another reason I feel that our connection isn't as strong is because we all have different interests. For example, our older son enjoys video games and disc golfing, and our younger son enjoys music, friends and fashion. Strengths and Stressors The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Family Genogram Assignment Analysis Another assignment that involved my family was a genogram assignment. Here, I learned about the history of my family. I've never explored my family's history because we are not close to either side of the family. During this assignment, I felt more confident of my family's past. It was delightful to see the genogram on paper, after processing it in my head for days. In social work, a genogram is a practical to assess and intervention. According to Pope and Jacquelyn, "in general, the genogram is useful in gathering information, understanding relationship dynamics and behavioral patterns, promoting, the client's self–understanding, conducting, assessments, and guiding the practitioner to interventions" (2015). Throughout this genogram assignment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I've learned the goals of a social worker because of this class. Professional Roles and Responsibilities states that a social worker "must remind our nation and its leaders about how the social work profession helped make the United States a compassionate world leader in the last century and that social workers continue to advocate for social justice and provide necessary services for all citizens" (2015). I have appreciated this class and its objectives. Helping troubled families was one of the best social workers classes I have had taken. This is because I learned more about myself, my family, and the helping profession. I give thanks to challenges when they come my way. If it wasn't for the challenges I experienced in this course, I wouldn't have grown or learned as much as I did. Although challenges can be difficult to manage, if you have a life free of challenges, you would never grow and never be able to live up to your full potential. When I look back on every challenge I faced through this class, I notice they have played an important role in my life. This course helped me grow in a personal and professional way. I can't wait to continue to learn more about myself, my family and the helping profession. Leaving this class, I feel well prepared to help others as a social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Essay on Genogram Family Analysis Genogram Family Analysis II How you ever feel that we, as sons or daughter tend to repeat our parent mistakes? I have always asked myself why and I still have not have the right answer. For example my mother grew up in a very strict environment when she was a child, with my grandmother and my great grandmother coming from a Japanese Culture; my mother grew up to be a very quiet and reserve young adult. She is really kind, strict, helpful and with a very big heart. Although we had our differences when I was growing up, we get along pretty well. One of the things that stand out from her, it is her stubborn personality. Although she is a really good listener, I always feel that it has to be her way. I believe she is more like her way or the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the things I could always count with my mother is her knowledge for medicine. She always knows what medicine I can take and what I need to do in order to get better. My mother used to be the hospital accountant in the pharmacy department for almost 20 years, so she is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to medicine. My father is the oldest son of his family. He has nine siblings, four brothers and five sisters. He is a very hard worker individual. He started working at a very young age in order to help his family. Right after he graduated from high school, my father enrolled in the air force. My father is a very persistent man; he does not give up easily. He is a very happy go lucky person. He is really social and outgoing, always making jokes, telling stories and making other people laugh. He is really passionate about drawing and designing things. He enjoys working with his hands and going outdoors. He is more adventurous than my mother. My relationship with my father has been different. He used to drink a lot while when I was younger, but although he would come under those conditions, he still would have the time and dedication to play with me. When I was younger I used to spend lots of time with my father, he would try to show me how to repair cars, I remember getting all greasy by trying to help him, but after a while I was sent to live with my grandmother, so our ... • 38. Comparing Bowen's Family Systems Theory And The Structural... Comparing Bowen's family systems theory and Minuchin's structural family theory we will outline several fundamental categories for analysis with Goldenberg & Goldenberg (2012) as our guide. We also contrast the history and theoretical orientation of both men to garner a deeper understanding of their theories. Finally we will consider integrating elements of both theories and how this makes us more effective practitioners. Prior to establishing his theory post–World War II, Bowen studied the origins of schizophrenia and postulated that transgenerational maternal enmeshment was its cause. Bowen's thoughts on this were similar to those on individuation. Though he believed psychoanalysis was too individualized for family therapy, the psychoanalytic notion that one's interactions are driven by unconscious motivation was the theory's germ of inspiration. Goldenberg & Goldenberg (2012) write that the most essential piece Bowen's family systems theory is that the individual needs to resolve anxiety arising from their family of origin to find a sense of individuality. This concept is traceable to Bowen's psychoanalytic roots as a psychiatrist. Overall, Bowen focused on triadic relationships for therapeutic intervention, predominately the parental subgroup and a child. He looked at how low self–esteemed members of a family became vulnerable to triangulation. They then became enmeshed in their family and forwarded a legacy of chronic anxiety. Classic psychoanalysis agrees that issues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
