The Global Challenge
The Global Challenge – Topic 2
Every city that has hosted an Olympics, Commonwealth Games or World Cup event has seen some
social unrest about the negative impact of the event on local people. Choose a recent Games–event
host city and research the debate about the impact of that event on the city and its people. Critically
discuss, i relation to relevant literature, the negative impacts the Games events have on a city and
what gives rise to these impaction the basis of evidence that you have gathered and the literature on
social struggles against games events, comment on whether you think local opposition to these
events is warranted.
Events such as the Commonwealth games in Glasgow are more about the state gaining land and
improving the cities international image than helping the local community (Glasgow Games
Monitor, 2011). The Glasgow state used the global legacy, support and exceptionality of the games
to justify the transformation of culture and the exploitation of the lower classes. They did this
through neoliberal based policy, violence and the manipulation of consumerism. This resulted in the
working class of Glasgow falling victim to exclusionary displacement, economic vulnerability and
helplessness. The impacts of the commonwealth games improved the international image of
Glasgow and the benefits accumulated with the state and the richer citizens, whilst the poor were
left displaced and 'unsuccessful ' citizens (Paton, 2012).
Displacement was a negative

It's simple. Each athlete simply enjoys racing, however the cost of racing can be costly, at times.
Races for an athlete can range from $90 to well over $700 per event. Sponsorship funding is used to
defer the cost of competing for our members in the form of gear or race expense reimbursement.
Your sponsor money works for you because our athletes represent you well to thousands of people.
It also gives our athletes the additional resources to help defer some of the expenses of competing so
they can compete more often. As you look at the different levels of sponsorship opportunities, you
will note the placement and the benefits each level affords. This does not limit the involvement of
our sponsor to participate at their discretion more than the level of sponsorship provides. Details on
these opportunities are numerous and can be discussed with a WWMS representative. We would

Persuasive Essay On Commercialism In Sport
When we think of sport, we think of fair play, competition, strength and determination. Australians
are extremely passionate about their sport and do not hide this fact. They are drawn in by the need to
win and the atmosphere sport prevails, influencing the way sport is viewed on the world of
commercialism. Majority of Australians would sit down to watch at least one significant sporting
event every year. Whether this be through the sport of rugby, tennis, cricket or the Olympics,
Australians are attracted to seeing their team or country perform to the best of their ability. We must
discuss the need to watch these events and the organisations need to feed commercialism and
promotion through the context of sport, to better their own needs. We look to address why sport has

We are now able to view sport from the comfort of our homes, 365 days a year and if you're lucky it
is available 24 hours a day on paid television. Athletes are able to make a career out of sport and
provide entertainment for a number of different reasons. However, this does not come without a
number of negatives. A dominating influence on commercialism in sport is the influence of doping.
The pressure to succeed and stay at a level where sponsorship is everything, athletes choose to
enhance their own performance by taking banned substances. Another negative effect on media in
sports shows the demanding need for gambling. Australians are choosing to watch a particular sport
due to the need to win money or create more excitement when enjoying a game. All major sporting
industries have ties with betting agencies. They are allowed to promote their advertisements by
paying big dollars and encouraging individuals to gamble their money away. Unhealthy habits are

Should College Athletes Get Paid?
Nowadays, college sport program is highly appreciated. It helps develop school spirit and is one of
the big revenue for school by buying tickets. However, there is an endless debate whether college
should have big sport program or not. From my viewpoint, I think that sport events are very
important for campus life but having big sport program, such as multi–million dollar football and
basketball teams is not necessary and can lead to bad effects for student life.
As you can see, sports generate a lot of money for colleges and universities. Many colleges consider
sport as a big business. Hence, college sports will become more and more professional; athletes
devote most of their time to practice. However, people forget that college athletes are students and
they go to college for the purpose of honing the skill and learning how to do in future career not

You know that college sport is for fun, and it creates a chance for students to become closer and

students. Moreover, by spending more money for sport events, universities accidentally create the
jealousy in campus life. In the beginning, sport is comparable to any other activities in university.
However, if multi–million dollar is spent for sport, it will become the most considerable activities.
As a result, many A+ students who are do well on test or on other activities at school are curious to
know why they are not appreciated as highly as the athletes. In brief, I think that while sport events

During the 1960s, while the United States was going through a civil infrastructure revolution, Texas

Houston. Home to several professional sports team, and later a registered as a national land mark,
the Texas created Houston Astrodome was the first in what would become multi–purposed indoor
sports arenas. Like the saying goes, "everything is bigger in Texas." Nothing can hold more true to
that statement than the marvel of what is the Houston Astrodome. Conceived by former city mayor
Roy Hofheinz, designed by the Morris Architects (Ballparks by Munsey and Suppes), the Houston
Astrodome broke ground in 1962 and was completed in November 1964. After her completion, she
would be dubbed the 8th Wonder of the World. Before her inception, there was no other indoor,
multi–purposed sports stadium in the country. Opening Day was April 9th, 1965 to a sold out crowd
between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. Between opening day, and her final game ...

that role of doing it bigger. The Astrodome made such an impact on the sports world that after its

years to come. Were it not for the ingenuity of Texans, and their desire to push the limits, perhaps

and go into depth of the premium paydays in the NBA, NFL, and MLB. "The three names will focus
on will be Kobe Bryant (61.9), Drew Brees (51m), and Alex Rodriquez (30.3m)".(Badenhausen,
2013) Kobe Bryant recently signed a two–year contract with the NBA franchise LA Lakers which
for the third straight year will make him the league's highest paid salary athlete at 30 million a year
for the next two years, with the next player making 7 million dollars less than him, which is the
most popular league player in LeBron James. Quarterback Drew Brees with his multi–year
extension deal with the Saints makes him the NFL's high man just edging his counterpart
quarterback Aaron Rodgers by just a half million dollars in perspective. These leagues consist of
salary capped multi–year player option and team–option contracts unlike the MLB. The MLB is
different in many ways as they able to offer multi–year contracts and no salary cap in which the 10
year contract of Alex Rodriquez worth 30 million dollars per year has him tops in the league. This
factor puts into perspective the difference in how the professions pay charts differ from no salary
cap in the MLB to guaranteed money caps for the NBA and NFL alike. To understand the impact of
such contracts, we focus on the collegiate athlete. To go to

The Making of a Legend
What does it take to be a legend? How far would one go to be a legend in something one enjoys?
Jordan Burroughs will go the the ends of the earth to considered a legend in the sport of freestyle
wrestling. He went from underdog to top dog with years of hard work, unrelentless training, and
never giving up on his dream to be a legend in mans oldest sport...wrestling.
In ancient Greek mythology, Zeus wrestled Cronos in a battle over the universe in which of course
Zeus won. The great event was celebrated by making wrestling the last event in the Pentathlon.
Back in Ancient times greek men wrestled covered in olive oil and naked. To win one had to throw
his opponent or knock him down, but ancient greece was not the only ones who wrestled. In
Mesopotamia Sumerian caves had drawings in them of wrestling that dated back at least 7,000
years. Over in the village of Beni Hasan, Egypt historians found wrestling how–to drawings in
tombs.
In present day wrestling a new up and coming star named Jordan Burroughs is taking the
International Freestyle Circuit by storm. Burroughs is 25 years old and became the seventh U.S.
wrestler to win three Olympic or world titles. Burroughs joined Bruce Baumgartner, Kevin Jackson,
Leroy Kemp, Mark Schultz and John Smith. Burroughs and Smith are the only two wrestlers in U.S.
history to win back–to–back world or Olympic titles. Jordan is also hoping to join John as the only
as the only wrestlers to win all six Olympic and world titles in a 6 year

Sports Stadiums: Turning Public Money into Private Profit
Abstract: The Stadium construction boom continues, and taxpayers are being forced to pay for new
high tech stadiums they don't want. These new stadiums create only part–time jobs. Stadiums bring
money in exclusively for professional leagues and not the communities. The teams are turning
public money into private profit. Professional leagues are becoming extremely wealthy at the
taxpayers expense. The publicly–funded stadium obsession must be put to a stop before athletes and
coaches become even greedier. New stadiums being built hurt public schools, and send a message to
children that leisure activities are more important than basic education. Public money ... Show more

Each of the stadiums are funded in unique ways, communities do not benefit from new stadiums,
and stadiums do not save a struggling downtown. Foremost, stadiums hurt public schools, and this
money should be used for more important public services. There are many reasons we subsidize
sports, but stadiums do not help the economy, and there are no net benefits from stadiums. Teams
strive for new stadiums to create an image, but there are options so that a community will not loose
a team to another city without building a new stadium.
There are several options in paying for the new stadiums. Sports stadiums are subsidized by:
construction and operating grants paid to private owners or developers, construction and ownership
by governing agencies, a state or local tax, or by federal tax–exempt bonds, or the general public can
pay . The public is forced to pay when general fund revenues are used to fund the stadium or a new
tax is imposed. In Seattle, 2% of the county tax went toward paying for the kingdome. The cities,
counties, and special districts can increase their general sales tax to raise money for stadiums.
Sometimes state money is also used to fund the stadiums.
Taxpayers have been forced to pay for these stadiums in various ways. People who were not part of
the majority and voted "no" on new a stadium have to pay the same amount of taxes as the people

Sports Management : A Wide Array Of Job Opportunities And...
A Sports Management Degree offers a wide array of job opportunities and possibilities. Sports
management careers are popular due to the passion many people have for athletics and it allows
non–athletes to work within the sport field. One aspect to note is that there are 3 main segments
within this field. These include; sports performance, production, and promotion. Each offer unique
opportunities in the athletics field. A performance career would be a Recreation Worker, a
production career would be an University Athletic Director (A.D.), and a promotion career would be
a Sports Event Planner. Ultimately, after analyzing all 3 sectors, the production segment
distinguishes itself in terms of size and scope, growth trends, and it allows the non–athlete the most
opportunity to direct and guide University athletics. Size and Scope The size and scope of an athletic
director is much greater and vast than that of a recreation worker and a sports event planner. First
off, a Recreation Worker does have to manage different programs within a park, instruct classes, and
be able to administer first aid if necessary ("Recreation Worker," n.d.) However, they do not deal
with the same amount of stress Athletic Directors do. A.D.'s deal with more students and
responsibilities. An A.D. at a university can have over 1,000 athletes to deal with and manage. Not
only this, but an athletic director also has to oversee his staff. He has to ensure the team has

Sports Industry Research Paper
When it comes to the overall structure of the sports industry, it is fairly basic. Clubs, teams, and
other major sports organizations embody a combination of amateur, recreational, or professional
athletes. The business structures of the organizations associated with these sports are very different
in structure but they all have a common core that includes a management side and a labor side. The
sports industry is a multi–billion dollar industry with each of the four major leagues composing of
commissioners who oversee the association as a whole. Their aim is to continue to expand their
growth and viewership of their sport all across the globe. For example, on the world stage,

At the age of 16, I had won the Junior Canadian National Championships in my division and
qualified to be on the Junior National team. Being on the junior national team gave me the
opportunity to represent Canada at the 2016 Junior world taekwondo championships, which made
me feel very content, thrilled, but as well very nervous. The world championship was to be taken
place at Burnaby AB, Canada which made it even better, being in your hometown and being able to
represent the hometown country. Since Nationals had taken place in May, and Worlds would be in
November, I had quite a while to prepare for this large event. I had trained 2 hours every day from

Team Canada was amazing and I made so many friends, we trained twice a day, and prepared for the
odds.
It finally came to the first day of a seven–day competition. The venue was one of the biggest and
nicest competitions I've been to, there were 5 mats for fighting in, and they would announce your
country and name while you walked out. My teammates Angelique and Darius were both competing
on the first day but sadly lost close matches. I was not until the fifth day, so watching my team was
very nerve–racking and I could feel the tension in the air. Finally, on my day of competition, I was a
wreck. I couldn't think, breath, I was just so nervous. My roommate Skylar, and two other guys
Zachary and Joshua were as well competing today. It came down to my first fight versing Columbia,
I had done really good and beat her 16– 0, which had made me very happy and calmed me down.
My second fight was against one of the best teams in the world, Iran. Round 1 of 3 vs Iran and I was

had fallen letting me lose in the round of 16, 12–10. I was so close and the girl that beat me ended
3rd place. Overall Canada had finished with a bronze and gold, the same day of my fight my
roommate Skylar Park had won her division and became world champion, and one of the guys got a
bronze medal.

Non-Profit Analysis
The first aspect in determining a financial conclusion is whether or not a event is staged for profit of
non–profit reasons. Since the 1980's, those responsible for organising the Olympic games have
made definitely small profits in relation to operating budgets. This profit is distributed between the
host county's National Olympic Committee (NOC), the IOC, and on small occasions to those
responsible for sport facility maintenance. The IOC is largely responsible for revenue generated by
marketing rights (brand sponsors, television rights, media coverage), which they redistribute to
international sports federations represented at the games. This cycle of internal investment means
the Olympic Games is a non–profit event (Catherwood and Van Kirk, ... Show more content on

By rationale a multi–sport event requires numerous facilities to cater each sporting requirement,
given the rarity for a single city or region to accommodate permanent or temporary facilities
(Davies, 2006). On the whole, mono–sport events are hosted in existing facilities although counter
to that statement is large–scale mono–event such as FIFA Football World Cup, thus responsibilities
are attributed to organising committees. Taking this division between multi–sports and mono–sports
it is easy to understand how management of multi–sports is more difficult due to external
requirements, be that: organising specialists, sporting bodies, increased staffing costs and budget
management throughout infrastructure (Downward, Dawson and Dejonghe, 2009)..
A key role financial organisation plays for the duration of both planning and development stages, is
to produce and relay information to management, shareholders, and stakeholders showing in
monetary values the economic stability of business resources (Noll and Zimbalist, 1997). These
responsibilities can be categorised as: overseeing financial risk, protecting the integrity of company
finances, motivating managers to establish competitive value, attracting money into company

What business is Billabong in and how does it differentiate itself?
Billabong operates within the highly competitive surfwear industry comprised of the 'Big Three'
including Quicksilver, Rip Curl and Billabong itself, along with a pool of smaller firms and
specialist manufacturers. It employs a number of strategies in order to differentiate itself from these
rivals and maintain its authentic association with surfing culture. These strategies include pursuing a
niche market of 10–24 year old brand obsessed and anti mainstream consumers, multi branding,
high involvement in multiple promotions to convey that Billabong is genuine and linked directly
with the sport and also the strength of the brand itself. These strategies enable Billabong to ... Show

Billabong has further strengthened the notion of being rooted in surfing culture through the creation
of the Billabong Odyssey concept, where the brand sends surfers to remote locations simply to catch
waves that have never before been attempted. Additionally, through having their products featured
in an internationally acclaimed surfing film, the brand not only resonated with surfers around the
world, but also encouraged growth in the women's market.
Another method of differentiation used by Billabong is its strategy of multi branding. Billabong
pursues a niche market of 10 to 24 year olds who are brand orientated and are willing to spend
accordingly to ensure that they are anti mainstream. The implication of pursuing such a segment is
that Billabong must ensure that its brand does not become too large and mass market, as this would
result in a loss in credibility from its consumer base who are seeking individualism and
independence. Consequently, unlike its major rivals, Billabong has implemented a strategy of multi
branding instead of attempting to push the brand into other product areas. This multi branding
strategy has led to the acquisition of Element in 2001, a US skate wear manufacturer, and also Von
Zipper which is known for its sunglasses and snow goggles. In contrast Rip Curl has focused on
branching out into other product areas under the one

It is certainly a sad day for sports journalism in the "big bad city," as Lupica referred to it as on his

occasionally politics for the New York Daily News. He has been a journalist at the Daily News since
1977 when at the age of 25 he became the youngest columnist ever at a New York paper. Prior to
that Lupica covered the New York Knicks starting at the age of 23 and in recent times became
critical of the Knicks and their President Phil Jackson. Lupica was much more than a sports

High School Sports Center Research Paper
School sports provide physical, social and emotional benefits for the students and they also create
opportunities for students to be involved in the overall school community, and resonate with the
school values. However, all these benefits and opportunities can easily be missed if the school lacks
a modern and engaging sports center. If you think that it's time for your school to modernize its
athletic facilities, here are a few tips that will help you get the desired results.
Choose a multi–sport court design
Most schools have major sports which usually gets all the attention, and participates in major
competitions. Nevertheless, even if your team has a long standing tradition of playing a certain
sport, things can change with each generation. So, consider a court design that can accommodate
popular sports like basketball or volley, but also consider tennis, football, soccer and other sports
with increasing popularity. Thinking in advance will pay off in the future. If space is a problem,
consider portable equipment.

Sports Writer : A Unforgettable Story Of Sports Writing
Sports Writer
Sports writing is an art that began in 1905. Throughout history sports writers changed and evolved
the face of sports. Being a sports writer isn't just to explain what is happening in the games; Sports
writers also inspire and motivate people to become more involved in the sports communities. This is
the beginning to a unforgettable story of how to become a sports writer and the history beyond it.
The Beginning of Sports History
Since the start of competition, writers have covered sports in one way or another. Sports journalism
has been traced all the way back to the time of 859 B.C.E. when the great Greek Homer wrote about
the first known draw in wrestling, as Achilles raised the hands of both Ajax and Odysseus in Victory.
Sports journalism during this time was obscure because of the Revolutionary war from 1775 to
1783. In 1790 Benjamin Franklin had several quotes in news publications about swimming and the
New York Magazine had several articles written on sports. In the older days of time sports writers
would use letters, books, and or typewriters to write their stories for the sports games. Sports writers
report on all news that occurs in the sports world, providing content for newspapers, magazines and
online platforms. These writers need to be very knowledgeable in their preferred area of sports
entertainment in order to provide an effective analysis. In order to be able to be effective sports
writer you need to be prepared, determined, organized and be

Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid
Imagine being one of the best employees working for a billion dollar industry, but despite that, you
aren't paid. That is the reality for college athletes, who should be paid for their athletic ability. In the
United States, four hundred thousand athletes are part of the NCAA. Yet, none of the athletes are
paid. College athletes should be paid because they make the events possible, and those events
generate billions of dollars in profit.
College athletes are the entire reason that the events are possible. Michael Wilbon, a columnist for
ESPN and co–host of the postgame show "Pardon the Interruption" says, "How could anybody stand
on principal and argue against paying the people who make the events possible in the first place?"
It's unjust to not pay the people who make the events possible, the people who can literally break
their bones for the events (NCAA.org, Football Injuries). "Yet the labor force –the players– gets
nothing. Name another industry where labor gets nothing. You can't." This shows that the people
who are in charge of college sports isn't paying their players, who are essentially their "employees".
Not paying employees is not only wrong, it is also illegal. The NCCA should be paying college ...

known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which has now become one of the
most recognizable organizations in all of sports. As per their mission statement, the NCAA's purpose

Up until now the NCAA was able to get away with keeping college athletes under the category of
"amateur" meaning that they would not share in the portion of the profits, as that would compromise
their amateur status. Recently, the NCAA was challenged with and lost a lawsuit (O'Bannon vs. the
NCAA) filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon. The court ruled, Requires that the
NCAA's caps on compensation must at least reflect the full cost of school attendance (rather than
merely tuition and supplies). The court also held that $5,000 trust funds would be acceptable, so
long as the revenue was distributed equally to all players on a team, but rejected direct endorsements
as inconsistent with the valid objectives of the NCAA."(Lemieux, 2014) This ruling will have a big
impact on the business model and structure of the NCAA going forward. According to experts, "The
impact of the ruling will not be radical in the short term as scholarships will become more valuable
and players will receive some indirect benefits from licensing of their names and images. In the long
run this ruling will eventually lead to the collapse of the NCAA's business model as 'undermining'
amateurism will undermine fan interest." (Lemieux, 2014) As mentioned in the statement the NCAA
will have to make changes to its amateur rules,

I had done an interview with him before, intending to get a job there at byusportstv. I got to know

This invention caused the sports broadcasting industry to explode, because in May of 1939
Princeton and Columbia's baseball teams participated in the first nationally televised sporting event.
From that point on sports were changed forever, opening the doors for professional sports teams to
capitalize on the potential revenue that the broadcasting rights of their games could generate. Now
that this business was booming, the only issue was that it had no regulation outside of The Sherman
Act. The Sherman Act is a piece of legislation that prevents monopolies from forming and it helps
competition continue to thrive and be present in all markets. So this lack of regulation caused fans to
be very limited in terms of what teams they could watch play. In most cases, fans were only able to
watch their home team, which left few options for the fans, left little room for universal growth for
the NFL, and most importantly was breaking the antitrust laws. This issue of breaking antitrust laws
is the most prominent legal issue involved in broadcasting rights, and it had to be resolved in order
to keep the professional leagues from collapsing. Well, this issue came to a head in two court cases
that will be discussed in the case law portion of this piece. The result of these cases brought about

The Culture And Ethos Of The Surrounding Community Essay
Introduction Since the beginning of history stadiums have been used as a gathering point for nations
and its populace to enjoy events and festivals. Early examples of stadia can be seen through the
famous Roman Coliseum in Rome, where gladiators battled for their freedom and the trivial Globe
Theatre in London where Shakespeare's works were performed. In today's society, stadia have
evolved to become massive multi purpose stadiums that have helped to define and identify the
culture and ethos of the surrounding community. With societies push to more of an entertainment
culture, more and more stadia are being built in order to accommodate the popularity of sports,
music, comedy, and drama. This increase in attendance and popularity has caused stadia today to
become highly intricate, requiring millions and sometimes billions of dollars to be used in order to
create a not only massive, but also safe atmosphere where people can gather to enjoy their chosen
spectacle. The innovation of today's new stadia requires and depends on proper management and
operations. This comes in the form of certain characteristics and techniques, which if used properly
can help to lead to the overall success of the stadium. In this analysis, I will discuss the essential
characteristics for stadia management, as well as compare and contrast two major stadia in today's
world in order to get a better understanding of their practical application.

The Sorry State of Filipino Athletes at the Olympics
THE SORRY STATE OF FILIPINO ATHLETES AT THE OLYMPICS
"Look! Even, what's that–Uzbekistan?! What's Uzbekistan?! Even this Uzbekistan has at least one

Olympic medal count. For this year's Olympic Games in London, the Philippines sent out eleven
athletes to compete in eight sports, making it the smallest Philippine delegation at the Summer
Games since 1936. Out of those eleven, only two made it past their events' preliminary rounds:
boxer Mark Barriga and BMX cyclist Daniel Caluag. Neither of them advanced any further. For the

The United States also have their own form of NSAs, but are called national sports federations. The
USOC's main focus are the athletes themselves and entering them into these competitions, while the
individual sports federations are in charge of these athlete's training of the regulation of their own
sporting community. These organizations' roles are defined and clear, much unlike in the
Philippines.
There also exists a second problem, this time, within the NSAs themselves. In an article by Gerry
Carpio, he talks about how divisions within the NSAs are causing major setbacks. In the Philippines,
NSAs can have two presidents: one to be recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the
other to be recognized by international committees. Carpio even goes on to state that "these two
chiefs and their followers are mortal enemies." In the article he describes an instance where feuding
within an NSA ended in disaster. A conflict between the two figures of authority forced a divide
between the athletes, and eventually started a "war" in the NSA. The constant struggle limited the
athletes' opportunities and stalled preparations for competitions. By the time the conflict had been

recruits? Athletics at the collegiate level went from clubs playing at each other to a billion dollar
business. That is just one example of change in college sports. College athletics have changed over
time from the number of sports, money dedicated to sports, and how women's athletics has
improved.
College athletics has gone from one sport between two school's clubs to 24 different NCAA

  • 3. The Global Challenge The Global Challenge – Topic 2 Every city that has hosted an Olympics, Commonwealth Games or World Cup event has seen some social unrest about the negative impact of the event on local people. Choose a recent Games–event host city and research the debate about the impact of that event on the city and its people. Critically discuss, i relation to relevant literature, the negative impacts the Games events have on a city and what gives rise to these impaction the basis of evidence that you have gathered and the literature on social struggles against games events, comment on whether you think local opposition to these events is warranted. Events such as the Commonwealth games in Glasgow are more about the state gaining land and improving the cities international image than helping the local community (Glasgow Games Monitor, 2011). The Glasgow state used the global legacy, support and exceptionality of the games to justify the transformation of culture and the exploitation of the lower classes. They did this through neoliberal based policy, violence and the manipulation of consumerism. This resulted in the working class of Glasgow falling victim to exclusionary displacement, economic vulnerability and helplessness. The impacts of the commonwealth games improved the international image of Glasgow and the benefits accumulated with the state and the richer citizens, whilst the poor were left displaced and 'unsuccessful ' citizens (Paton, 2012). Displacement was a negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each athlete simply enjoys racing, however the cost of racing can be costly, at times. Races for an athlete can range from $90 to well over $700 per event. Sponsorship funding is used to defer the cost of competing for our members in the form of gear or race expense reimbursement. Your sponsor money works for you because our athletes represent you well to thousands of people. It also gives our athletes the additional resources to help defer some of the expenses of competing so they can compete more often. As you look at the different levels of sponsorship opportunities, you will note the placement and the benefits each level affords. This does not limit the involvement of our sponsor to participate at their discretion more than the level of sponsorship provides. Details on these opportunities are numerous and can be discussed with a WWMS representative. Australians are extremely passionate about their sport and do not hide this fact. They are drawn in by the need to win and the atmosphere sport prevails, influencing the way sport is viewed on the world of commercialism. Majority of Australians would sit down to watch at least one significant sporting event every year. Whether this be through the sport of rugby, tennis, cricket or the Olympics, Australians are attracted to seeing their team or country perform to the best of their ability. We are now able to view sport from the comfort of our homes, 365 days a year and if you're lucky it is available 24 hours a day on paid television. Athletes are able to make a career out of sport and provide entertainment for a number of different reasons. However, this does not come without a number of negatives. A dominating influence on commercialism in sport is the influence of doping. The pressure to succeed and stay at a level where sponsorship is everything, athletes choose to enhance their own performance by taking banned substances. Another negative effect on media in sports shows the demanding need for gambling. Australians are choosing to watch a particular sport due to the need to win money or create more excitement when enjoying a game. All major sporting industries have ties with betting agencies. • 12. Should College Athletes Get Paid? Nowadays, college sport program is highly appreciated. It helps develop school spirit and is one of the big revenue for school by buying tickets. However, there is an endless debate whether college should have big sport program or not. From my viewpoint, I think that sport events are very important for campus life but having big sport program, such as multi–million dollar football and basketball teams is not necessary and can lead to bad effects for student life. As you can see, sports generate a lot of money for colleges and universities. Many colleges consider sport as a big business. Hence, college sports will become more and more professional; athletes devote most of their time to practice. Moreover, by spending more money for sport events, universities accidentally create the jealousy in campus life. In the beginning, sport is comparable to any other activities in university. However, if multi–million dollar is spent for sport, it will become the most considerable activities. As a result, many A+ students who are do well on test or on other activities at school are curious to know why they are not appreciated as highly as the athletes. Home to several professional sports team, and later a registered as a national land mark, the Texas created Houston Astrodome was the first in what would become multi–purposed indoor sports arenas. Like the saying goes, "everything is bigger in Texas." Nothing can hold more true to that statement than the marvel of what is the Houston Astrodome. Conceived by former city mayor Roy Hofheinz, designed by the Morris Architects (Ballparks by Munsey and Suppes), the Houston Astrodome broke ground in 1962 and was completed in November 1964. After her completion, she would be dubbed the 8th Wonder of the World. Before her inception, there was no other indoor, multi–purposed sports stadium in the country. (Underwood, 2009) Let us take a look at some of the current athletes in the respective major sports and go into depth of the premium paydays in the NBA, NFL, and MLB. "The three names will focus on will be Kobe Bryant (61.9), Drew Brees (51m), and Alex Rodriquez (30.3m)".(Badenhausen, 2013) Kobe Bryant recently signed a two–year contract with the NBA franchise LA Lakers which for the third straight year will make him the league's highest paid salary athlete at 30 million a year for the next two years, with the next player making 7 million dollars less than him, which is the most popular league player in LeBron James. Quarterback Drew Brees with his multi–year extension deal with the Saints makes him the NFL's high man just edging his counterpart quarterback Aaron Rodgers by just a half million dollars in perspective. These leagues consist of salary capped multi–year player option and team–option contracts unlike the MLB. The MLB is different in many ways as they able to offer multi–year contracts and no salary cap in which the 10 year contract of Alex Rodriquez worth 30 million dollars per year has him tops in the league. This factor puts into perspective the difference in how the professions pay charts differ from no salary cap in the MLB to guaranteed money caps for the NBA and NFL alike. • 20. The Making of a Legend What does it take to be a legend? How far would one go to be a legend in something one enjoys? Jordan Burroughs will go the the ends of the earth to considered a legend in the sport of freestyle wrestling. He went from underdog to top dog with years of hard work, unrelentless training, and never giving up on his dream to be a legend in mans oldest sport...wrestling. In ancient Greek mythology, Zeus wrestled Cronos in a battle over the universe in which of course Zeus won. The great event was celebrated by making wrestling the last event in the Pentathlon. Back in Ancient times greek men wrestled covered in olive oil and naked. To win one had to throw his opponent or knock him down, but ancient greece was not the only ones who wrestled. In Mesopotamia Sumerian caves had drawings in them of wrestling that dated back at least 7,000 years. Over in the village of Beni Hasan, Egypt historians found wrestling how–to drawings in tombs. In present day wrestling a new up and coming star named Jordan Burroughs is taking the International Freestyle Circuit by storm. Sports Stadiums: Turning Public Money into Private Profit Abstract: The Stadium construction boom continues, and taxpayers are being forced to pay for new high tech stadiums they don't want. These new stadiums create only part–time jobs. Stadiums bring money in exclusively for professional leagues and not the communities. The teams are turning public money into private profit. Professional leagues are becoming extremely wealthy at the taxpayers expense. The publicly–funded stadium obsession must be put to a stop before athletes and coaches become even greedier. Each of the stadiums are funded in unique ways, communities do not benefit from new stadiums, and stadiums do not save a struggling downtown. Foremost, stadiums hurt public schools, and this money should be used for more important public services. There are many reasons we subsidize sports, but stadiums do not help the economy, and there are no net benefits from stadiums. Teams strive for new stadiums to create an image, but there are options so that a community will not loose a team to another city without building a new stadium. There are several options in paying for the new stadiums. Sports stadiums are subsidized by: construction and operating grants paid to private owners or developers, construction and ownership by governing agencies, a state or local tax, or by federal tax–exempt bonds, or the general public can pay . The public is forced to pay when general fund revenues are used to fund the stadium or a new tax is imposed. In Seattle, 2% of the county tax went toward paying for the kingdome. The cities, counties, and special districts can increase their general sales tax to raise money for stadiums. Sometimes state money is also used to fund the stadiums. Taxpayers have been forced to pay for these stadiums in various ways. People who were not part of the majority and voted "no" on new a stadium have to pay the same amount of taxes as the people ... Sports management careers are popular due to the passion many people have for athletics and it allows non–athletes to work within the sport field. One aspect to note is that there are 3 main segments within this field. These include; sports performance, production, and promotion. Each offer unique opportunities in the athletics field. A performance career would be a Recreation Worker, a production career would be an University Athletic Director (A.D.), and a promotion career would be a Sports Event Planner. First off, a Recreation Worker does have to manage different programs within a park, instruct classes, and be able to administer first aid if necessary ("Recreation Worker," n.d.) However, they do not deal with the same amount of stress Athletic Directors do. A.D.'s deal with more students and responsibilities. At the centre of the immense success of American college sports is its governing organization, known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which has now become one of the most recognizable organizations in all of sports. As per their mission statement, the NCAA's purpose is, " To be an integral part of higher education and to focus on the development of our student– athletes." Up until now the NCAA was able to get away with keeping college athletes under the category of "amateur" meaning that they would not share in the portion of the profits, as that would compromise their amateur status. Recently, the NCAA was challenged with and lost a lawsuit (O'Bannon vs. the NCAA) filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon. The court ruled, Requires that the NCAA's caps on compensation must at least reflect the full cost of school attendance (rather than merely tuition and supplies). The court also held that $5,000 trust funds would be acceptable, so long as the revenue was distributed equally to all players on a team, but rejected direct endorsements as inconsistent with the valid objectives of the NCAA."(Lemieux, 2014) This ruling will have a big impact on the business model and structure of the NCAA going forward. According to experts, "The impact of the ruling will not be radical in the short term as scholarships will become more valuable and players will receive some indirect benefits from licensing of their names and images. In the long run this ruling will eventually lead to the collapse of the NCAA's business model as 'undermining' amateurism will undermine fan interest." (Lemieux, 2014) As mentioned in the statement the NCAA will have to make changes to its amateur rules, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Well, that's how the world used to be at the turn of the 20th century. The development of the Sports Broadcasting industry and more importantly the rights and regulations associated with the industry set the pace to allow the world of sports media to advance to the point it is at today. This invention caused the sports broadcasting industry to explode, because in May of 1939 Princeton and Columbia's baseball teams participated in the first nationally televised sporting event. From that point on sports were changed forever, opening the doors for professional sports teams to capitalize on the potential revenue that the broadcasting rights of their games could generate. Now that this business was booming, the only issue was that it had no regulation outside of The Sherman Act. The Sherman Act is a piece of legislation that prevents monopolies from forming and it helps competition continue to thrive and be present in all markets. So this lack of regulation caused fans to be very limited in terms of what teams they could watch play. In most cases, fans were only able to watch their home team, which left few options for the fans, left little room for universal growth for the NFL, and most importantly was breaking the antitrust laws. This issue of breaking antitrust laws is the most prominent legal issue involved in broadcasting rights, and it had to be resolved in order to keep the professional leagues from collapsing. Well, this issue came to a head in two court cases that will be discussed in the case law portion of this piece. The result of these cases brought about the birth of the Sports Broadcasting Act in 1961. The Sports Broadcasting Act, "gave professional sports ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Culture And Ethos Of The Surrounding Community Essay Introduction Since the beginning of history stadiums have been used as a gathering point for nations and its populace to enjoy events and festivals. Early examples of stadia can be seen through the famous Roman Coliseum in Rome, where gladiators battled for their freedom and the trivial Globe Theatre in London where Shakespeare's works were performed. In today's society, stadia have evolved to become massive multi purpose stadiums that have helped to define and identify the culture and ethos of the surrounding community. With societies push to more of an entertainment culture, more and more stadia are being built in order to accommodate the popularity of sports, music, comedy, and drama. This increase in attendance and popularity has caused stadia today to become highly intricate, requiring millions and sometimes billions of dollars to be used in order to create a not only massive, but also safe atmosphere where people can gather to enjoy their chosen spectacle. The innovation of today's new stadia requires and depends on proper management and operations. This comes in the form of certain characteristics and techniques, which if used properly can help to lead to the overall success of the stadium. Even this Uzbekistan has at least one medal," my 10–year–old cousin shouts as she buries her head into her hands upon seeing the day's Olympic medal count. For this year's Olympic Games in London, the Philippines sent out eleven athletes to compete in eight sports, making it the smallest Philippine delegation at the Summer Games since 1936. Out of those eleven, only two made it past their events' preliminary rounds: boxer Mark Barriga and BMX cyclist Daniel Caluag. Neither of them advanced any further. The United States also have their own form of NSAs, but are called national sports federations. The USOC's main focus are the athletes themselves and entering them into these competitions, while the individual sports federations are in charge of these athlete's training of the regulation of their own sporting community. These organizations' roles are defined and clear, much unlike in the Philippines. There also exists a second problem, this time, within the NSAs themselves. In an article by Gerry Carpio, he talks about how divisions within the NSAs are causing major setbacks. In the Philippines, NSAs can have two presidents: one to be recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the other to be recognized by international committees. Carpio even goes on to state that "these two chiefs and their followers are mortal enemies." In the article he describes an instance where feuding within an NSA ended in disaster. A conflict between the two figures of authority forced a divide between the athletes, and eventually started a "war" in the NSA. The constant struggle limited the athletes' opportunities and stalled preparations for competitions. By the time the conflict had been resolved, it was already too late: there wasn't enough time to train these athletes properly. In the end, they weren't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Athletics at the collegiate level went from clubs playing at each other to a billion dollar business. That is just one example of change in college sports.
