2. American Origins
House Music is a genre of Electronic Dance Music that originated in Chicago in the
80’s from Club DJ’s.
It displayed similar traits to Disco Music except it was more electronic and
minimalistic, furthermore the repetitive rhythm of the music was actually more
important than the song itself and the lyrics.
The Genre was pioneered in 1984 by DJ’s such as Frankie Knuckles, Phuture and Mr
Fingers. The popularity of the music soon spread to other states such as New York.
It soon spread to Europe.
In the late 80’s, many DJ’s found themselves obtaining official record deals with
record companies.

3. House Goes European
The early success of House music in Europe was seen in the song ‘Pump up The
Volume’ by ‘MARRS’ (1984) and ‘House Nation’ by ‘House Master Boyz’ as well as
many others.
Since the 90’s, House music has become mixed with mainstream genres such as
pop and Dance
4. Mainstream
Artists such as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Kylie Minogue used
the genre in their productions during the 90’s.
House music grew even larger from (1999 – 2001,) this was known as the second
progressive wave of house music.
It is now a recognised and established genre with there being subgenres of house
music such as Ghetto House and Deep House. Even in 2016 the Genre remains
extremely popular and still seems to be on the rise and is making more frequent
appearances, for example at V Festival they now have a Dance tent for this genre.
There is also more artists in the genre due to affordability of technology meaning
that many artists can now make their own songs, otherwise known as Prosumers.
Unlike the 80’s there is no need for DJ mixing tables, song’s can easily be created
on applications on mobile phones and on computers.

The growing popularity of such artists led to the emergence of electro house and
progressive house blended sounds in popular music, such as Lady Gaga’s ‘Marry
the Night,’ The Black Eyed Peas song ‘The Best one Yet (the boy)’ and more
recently Will.i.am and Britney Spears ‘Scream and Shout’
