2. What is a blog
s a discussion or informational site published on the
Web and consisting of discrete entries ("posts")
typically displayed in reverse chronological order.
blogs were usually the work of a single individual,
occasionally of a small group, and often covered a
single subject.
3. Type of blog
Personal blogs, is an ongoing diary or commentary
written by an individual.
Collaborative blogs or group blogs, a type of weblog
in which posts are written and published by more than
one author.
By genre, some blogs focus on a particular subject,
Two common types of genre blogs are art blogs and
music blogs. A blog featuring discussions especially
about home and family is not uncommonly called a
mom blog.
4. The Blogger's Code of Conduct
The Blogger's Code of Conduct is a proposal by Tim O'Reilly for bloggers to
enforce civility on their blogs by being civil themselves and moderating
comments on their blog. The code was proposed in 2007 due to threats made to
blogger Kathy Sierra. The idea of the code was first reported by BBC News, who
quoted O'Reilly saying, "I do think we need some code of conduct around what
is acceptable behaviour, I would hope that it doesn't come through any kind of
regulation it would come through self-regulation.
O'Reilly and others came up with a list of seven proposed ideas
Take responsibility not just for your own words, but for the comments you
allow on your blog.
Label your tolerance level for abusive comments.
Consider eliminating anonymous comments.
Ignore the trolls.
Take the conversation offline, and talk directly, or find an intermediary who
can do so.
If you know someone who is behaving badly, tell them so.
Don't say anything online that you wouldn't say in person.
5. Personal Safety
One consequence of blogging is the possibility of attacks or
threats against the blogger, sometimes without apparent
reason. For example Kathy Sierra, author of the innocuous
blog "Creating Passionate Users was the target of such
vicious threats and misogynistic insults that she cancelled
her keynote speech at a technology conference in San
Diego, fearing for her safety. While a blogger's anonymity is
often tenuous, Internet trolls who would attack a blogger
with threats or insults can be emboldened by anonymity.
Sierra and supporters initiated an online discussion aimed
at countering abusive online behavior and developed a
blogger's code of conduct.
6. Popularity
Blogging has become such a mania that a new blog is being
created every second of every minute of every hour of every
day. Researchers have actively analysed the dynamics of
how blogs become popular. There are essentially two
measures of this: popularity through citations, as well as
popularity through affiliation . The basic conclusion from
studies of the structure of blogs is that while it takes time
for a blog to become popular through blogrolls, permalinks
can boost popularity more quickly, and are perhaps more
indicative of popularity and authority than blogrolls, since
they denote that people are actually reading the blog's
content and deem it valuable or noteworthy in specific
cases.
