Jamaica Slideshow for Money on a Mission

1. Money on a Mission
Education at Saint Mary’s and Missions
Above Rocks, Jamaica WI

2. All together there are only about 2,500
children in the school community.
Many of these students do not have a
sufficient amount of textbooks and notebooks.

3. Parents need to pay a fee for school
to cover books, materials, and
other necessities.
Many can’t afford these fees and keep
their children at home instead.

4. Most of the kids live with their grandparents or
only one parent, as 95% of the children born in
Jamaica are born out of wedlock.
Of these parents, many only have a 5th grade education.

5. Many of the kids are fed breakfast
and lunch each day.
More could be fed, but high school students
are embarrassed to go to the feeding center.

6. Of the children that make it to high
school, standardized test scores are extremely
poor.
Passing is 50% and many of the kids have a
tough time reaching that grade.

7. Some students in high school do not
even know the alphabet.

8. Only about 40% of the students who
leave high school can read.
This trend is trying to be corrected in
schools but is at an uphill climb.

difference in the lives of
these children…

10. During the week of
April 20th to April 24th,
Character Club will be holding
a collection to help raise
money to send.

11. Each morning in homeroom, you
will be encouraged to donate.
Every little bit of money helps.

12. Along with homeroom collections,
jars will be located around the
school for any extra change
you may have.

13. The homeroom that raises the
most money will receive a
reward for their generous
donations.
