Q. What do we call these times of action in
English Grammar?
A. Tense
Q. What do you mean by the word tense?
A. The word Tense is derived from Latin word “tempus”
which means time. A verb indicates the time of an
action, event or condition by changing its form. There
are three basic forms of tense:-

PRESENT INDEFINITE TENSE
Definition
Present indefinite tense is used
to describe actions which take
place in the present. But no
definite time is given. This
tense does not indicate
whether the action is complete
or incomplete.

Present indefinite tense is used :
To talk about repeated routine actions or
habits
Example
We get up early everyday.
I Brush my teeth in the morning.
We offer prayer daily.
PRESENT INDEFINITE TENSE
 To talk about situations which are
permanent:
Example
Mr. Mansoor speaks fluent English.
 To talk about general truths:
Example
The earth goes round the sun.
 Usual activities
Example
I read the newspaper in the morning.
PRESENT INDEFINITE TENSE
 General timeless truths.
Example
Water freezes at 0 degrees centigrade.
 Sensory or mental perception in the present.
Example
I see a sign in the corner.
I know that Charlotte is a teacher.
 Narrative present
Examples
Arif hits the ball and falls over.
When the door opens Nida is sitting at a table and
writing a letter. Suddenly a door opens and a masked
man enters the room.
PRESENT INDEFINITE TENSE
 In newspaper headlines
Example
Mass murderer escapes.
Security forces attack militant hideouts.
 In conditional sentences
Example
If you work hard, you will succeed.
If it rains, we shall stay home.
 Future Planning
Example
We leave Kohat at 1000 hrs.We hire a taxi for
Peshawar. At 1130 hrs the plane takes off. We
reach London at 1600 hrs.

Assertive Sentences
First form of verb is used.
‘s’ or ‘es’ is added to verb for he, she, it and singular noun.
‘es’ is added to verbs ending with words ss, sh , ch ,x and o.
like coss, wash, catch, fix, go etc
Example:
The Baby smiles.
Soldiers get training in the school.

Negative Sentences
“Does not” is added after subject for he,
she, it and singular noun.
“Do not” is added after subject for I, We,
you, they and plural noun.
Examples:
The monkey does not walk.
I do not like baloon.

Interrogative Sentences
“Does” is used for he, she, it and
singular noun before the sentence.
“Do” is used for I, We, you, they and
plural noun before the sentence.
Example.
Do they know how to fly?
Does he fire from sniper?
