St. Joe Expedition
My research travel expedition is too Port St. Joe, Florida. With a budget of five thousand dollars and
fourteen days, I could travel to, and stay in relative comfort and be within easy travel to the
numerous location needed to try to find out what really happened to Old and New Iola. The small,
long lost village of Iola, located in northern Gulf County Florida. Iola flourished in the late 1830's,
when Florida was a new Colony of the United States. Born out of a business venture from
businessmen form Apalachicola, Florida, where shipping cotton was the major industry.
Apalachicola was a deep–water port that accessed the Gulf of Mexico and was a hub to northern
textile mills and many foreign countries. Cotton came down the Apalachicola River on steam ships
and barges from cotton fields in Alabama and Georgia. These businessmen, called Saints as a play
on St Joseph, became disgruntled about a Supreme Court ruling that would force higher taxes on
their businesses, so to remedy that, they created the town of St. Joseph to the west. ... Show more

The St. Joe and Iola railroad as it was called, ran north from St. Joseph, across the Chipola River at
the Dead Lakes on to Iola. The plan worked for a few years, and St. Joseph boomed, but the collapse
of Florida currency coupled with a yellow fever outbreak doomed the Saint Joseph venture. At that
time, St. Joseph was using very unstable Florida currency, whereas Apalachicola was using the
much more stable currency of Alabama and

Sister Agatha Research Paper
Untitled
Sailing across the great waters, the St. Joseph currently housed three nuns of the Augustinian order
and three from the Ursuline order with a small number of priests. These were the remaining from the
original twenty–four who set sail from Normandy in April, 1639.
Sister Agatha had prepared for this journey by studying under Mother Superior in the hospital. She
had an aptitude for identifying diseases.
As the ship glided towards the dock, Sister Agatha saw men in various attire. Most striking were the
men standing stoic wearing animal skins. These must be the Natives they were taught so much
about.
The walkway was lowered and the priests greeted the men allowing Sister Agatha to take a long
look into their eyes; she saw pain, hurt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The one in the lead of the group of men and women was that same Native man. His eyes were full of
fear and desperation.
Sister Agatha assessed and acted upon the situation immediately. She ran to grab towels and
motioned for the men to leave. What felt like hours passed and the child was finally, safely born.
Forgetting about small smiles, Sister Agatha went outside immediately with a large smile on her
face showing the men all was well.
Taking a few confident steps towards her, the Native man raised his right arm and motioned for her
to follow him. Though she had no idea what his intentions were, she trusted him and did as he
wished. Following him down the path to the river, where she would have expected to cross the river
now stood a beautifully constructed bridge. On the simple rails were carvings of men carrying their
dead and behind them Sister Agatha.
She turned to look at the man who motioned his hands towards the entire bridge and pointed to her.
She looked at him puzzled, and he then walked to the carving and pointed to the image of her. She
understood, he had this built for her.
She bowed her head and nodded with tears in her eyes, showing her appreciation and

The Indian War : The Battle Of The American War
Built by the british in 1758 during the french and indian war on the only dry and flat ground in the
area. The fort had fell into unrepairable when the war widened in 1776. Resuming on 1777 general
leger tried to intimadate the forts occupants by parading his troops in front of the fort. When this
didnt work he sent a truce flag bearing a proclamation authored by general burgoyn. Gansevoort
refused to respond. After that he began to siege all operations. encamping the regulars and artillery
on a low rise north of the fort and most of the Indins and Loyalists to its south with a picket line of
Indian encampments along the Mohawk River.St. Leger's artillery was held up by a tactic that was

These two units were still en route when the siege was lifted, and turned back. By August 20,
Arnold, Willett and 700 Continental Army regulars had arrived at Fort Dayton. In an attempt to
enlarge his force, Arnold tried to interest the Tryon County men in another attempt against St. Leger,
but raised only about 100 men. He then decided to wait, hoping that friendly oneidas and tuscarlas
could be convinced to join the effort, or that a request to Schuyler for another 1000 men would be
fullfilled. However, news reached him that the siege had reached a critical stage, and that action was
necessary. St. Leger had learned that his guns were largely ineffective against the fort's walls from
long range, so he began entrenching operations to establish positions closer to the fort. Gansevoort
reported that the siege trenches had reached within striking distance of one of the fort's
bastions.Uncomfortable with the number of troops available to him, Arnold opted for a deception to
sow trouble in the British camp. While at Fort Dayton, a number of Loyalists had been arrested,
including hon yost . Arnold convinced Hon Yost, a member of the King's Royal Regiment of New
York who grew up with many of the Mohawk Indians attacking Fort Stanwix to spread rumors that
large numbers of Americans, under the command ofThe Dark Eagle, were about to come down on
St. Leger's camp. Hon Yost's good conduct was assured by holding hostage his

Katerina's Short Story: Charles Bridge
The street lamps cast pools of light on the wet cobbles, illuminating the heads of the saints as they
keep their stony vigils on the walls of Charles Bridge. Fog rising from the river curls its tentacles
between the statues, wreathing a head for a few seconds or obscuring entire sections of the ancient
walls. The Viatia river flows oily and invisible thirty feet below. A bell somewhere in Hidraci strikes
eleven. The sound of running footsteps batters the muffled air, and then a cry. Jakub, his bare feet
filthy and bleeding, almost catches his wife's shoulder as she flees under the gothic archway of the
Bridge Tower. But a chipped cobble tears the ball of his foot and he sprawls on the wet stones. By
the time he heaves himself upright ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Katerina is singing a Hungarian folk song, the penultimate song in her mother's repertoire. Jakub
rattles the already heavy bag as one by one, the people, as though hypnotised by his daughter's
voice, drop into it whatever notes and coins they find in their pockets. A cynical old man strumming
a golden harp has realized that his subtle tones he teases out of his instrument are completely
overwhelmed by the silvery flood of notes issuing from Katerina's mouth. He marches along the
bridge and shouts to the people, "Why are you listening to this silly child? Can't you hear she has the
voice of a common music hall singer? My glass harmonica is far more rare. You'll not see another
like it in the city!" The audience takes no note of him, annoyance written on their face as he
interrupts the girls singing. The old man is furious at being ignored, his eyes blazing black and
furious in his bone–white face. He pushes his way through the crowd, shouldering people aside until
he reaches the front of the semicircle which has formed around the girl. She has just begun her final
song. Ave, Maria, gratia plena

Deep in the thick swamps and woods of Northern Gulf County, amidst the buzz and sting of
mosquitoes, chirps of squirrels, and swirls of the Apalachicola, is a long–lost story. One hundred and
eighty years ago the town of Iola sprang out of the cypress swamp of what is now north east Gulf
County. That small community, was, and still is an enigma in the wilderness of territorial Florida
and has all but faded from the memory of Gulf County and is nothing but a boat ramp now. You
cannot discuss Iola without first discussing Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph began its short life in the mid
1830's after a Supreme Court decision on the Forbes land grants in nearby Apalachicola. Forbes &
Co. was formerly the Panton & Leslie Co, located in Pensacola. The Panton & Leslie Co. was a
trading company that acquired a substantial amount of land along the Apalachicola River and
surrounding area of lands prior to Florida becoming a United States colony. By an agreement ...

Businessmen E.J. Wood and Rev Peter W. Gautier started to plan for a way to gain access to the
"Apalach". Lake Wimico, about eight miles away, could access the river by bayous, so the Saints, as
the Saint Joseph businessmen began to call themselves, first decided on a canal to bring the cargo
from the steamboat to the wharf. The Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Canal Company was chartered by
the legislative council of the territory of Florida in 1835 and later renamed to the Lake Wimico and
St. Joseph Canal and Railroad company. The canal never made it off the drawing table before a
railroad replaced it. In October 1835, Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Canal and Railroad Company
broke ground on the first steam railroad in Florida. It ran from Depot Creek on Lake Wimico, to
Saint Joseph. In May of 1836, the first steam powered locomotive traveled from Saint Joseph to

The beautiful town of Stillwater is located on the St. Croix river in the St. Croix River Valley and is
known as the Birthplace of Minnesota. The early days of Stillwater were uncertain and uneasy as the
land was fought over for many years. The coveted land transitioned from being part of Wisconsin
territory to being included in Washington county in 1938. All the while, lumbering interests drew
many to the area and white settlers took up residence in Stillwater. One former soldier, Indian trader,
Justice of the Peace and promoter, Joseph Renshaw Brown had been in the area since 1820. He had
set up a store and farm at Grey Cloud Island and kept a warehouse at the head of Lake St. Croix to
supply upriver fur trading operations. This warehouse, which was located where North Stillwater
stands today, grew into a small village that he called "Dacotah". In 1840 the first ferry was licensed
to operate across the St. Croix. In 1841, Joseph Brown's family traveled from Chicago to join him in

and formed the Stillwater Convention to draft a Memorial to send to congress suggesting that this
new territory be created and called "Minnesota." Henry Sibley delivered this petition to congress

of 1849. This, after all, is why Stillwater is referred to as the birthplace of Minnesota. On March 4,

Jane Eyre Phrenology Essay
Phrenology is the study of attributing specific personality traits and behaviors to specific portions of
the head, and was discovered by Franz Joseph Gall sometime in either the 18th or 19th century
(Gross). The word phrenology is derived from two Greek words meaning "mind" and "knowledge"
(Price). His revolutionary, although faulty and erroneous, science of the mind changed the study of
psychology. Victorian England was a supporter of Gall's work, and was a popular method of trying
to understand the fellow man.
Jane Eyre, a novel written by Charlotte Brontë, depicts many unique characters, including that of the
main protagonist. Jane Eyre is an unusual girl when compared to others of her time in society, and
was rarely understood. Through the use of phrenology, Jane's personality and behaviors could be
attributed to her cephalic anatomy. To be concise, Jane is perceived as weird because of the shape of
her head. Although this science is nonsensical to modern scholars, phrenology was accepted in the
English society of the 1700s by the world of academia. Phrenology could be easily used to examine
and study the mind of Jane Eyre in those days, and could have happened in the novel if Brontë had
wished to do so.
In my project, I highlighted the six most prominent faculties, or areas of the head, that contribute to
Jane's personality throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most significant scene in recognizing her identity is with Mr. Rochester before he proposes
marriage. However, the faculty continues to present itself later in the novel, when Jane meets St.
John Rivers. A cold and un–feeling minister, St. John plans to travel to India as a missionary and
bring Jane along only if she agrees to be his wife. Jane declares that, "If [she does] join St. John,
[she] abandon half [herself]" (Brontë 775). There are several other important faculties displayed on

Leopold Pokagon Facts
My Michigan Hero: Leopold Pokagon The legend of Leopold Pokagon is that he was born the son
of a Chippewa father and Ottawa mother, in the year 1775. Pokagon was Kidnapped from his
Chippewa village by a Potawatomi chief and given to Chief Topenebee of the Potawatomi. He was
given the name Pokagon because the headdress that he was wearing included a human rib. The word
Pokagon means "rib". However, in a book written by his son Simon Pokagon, he disclosed that
Pokagon was born Anishinabe, one of the Three Council Fires, and adopted into the Kitichigumi

also wanted to force all Indians to become Protestant Christians. The tribe to assist them in
converting to Christianity trusted a Baptist missionary Isaac McCoy. McCoy was a double agent. He
was in favor of the tribe's removal.
Leopold Pokagon worked to find a way to keep his tribe from having to leave their land. In 1830, he
went to Detroit to meet with Catholic officials to request a "Blackrobe" or a priest to be assigned to
his tribe. Pokagon felt that joining the Catholic Church would counteract the Baptists and an
important help in their fight against removal. By converting to Catholicism, the St. Joseph River
Valley Potawatomi were renamed the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. In 1833, the Americans wanted
more Potawatomi land, so they met in Chicago to propose another treaty. According to this treaty,
the Potawatomi were to move to Missouri and would receive 5 million acres of land and a contract
for regular yearly payments for 20 years. The treaty also wiped out any debt that the tribes owed to
fur traders. Leopold Pokagon contested giving up more land. He negotiated an amendment to the
treaty that allowed his band to remain in Michigan. During the negotiations, he pointed out that he
and his people were Catholics and this was a deciding factor in saving his people from losing their

Louis Riel Summary
The second part of the comic strip biography "Louis Riel" by Chester Brown, starts off in early
September 1870 in St. Joseph, Dakota territory. Louis Riel is reading a note which talks about how
the Canadian soldiers have wreaked havoc on the Red River Colony. It talks about how some Métis
men had been murdered and quite a few were beaten. Women had also been raped in the settlement
too. "The Canadian soldiers have brought a reign of fear to the Red River settlement." This is an
excerpt from the note Louis Riel was reading. Also, Schultz returned and was basically running
things. The comic–strip biography then fasts forwards to the summer of 1871. Louis Riel is reading
another note now. This one is talking about how the land the people of the settlement had been
promised by the Canadian government was being given to people from Eastern Canada. The
exceptional rich farmland was being given to the British farmers and the requests for land were
being delayed. After this Riel goes to his mother's house in the settlement and finds that many of the
soldiers have went home. His mother though, warns him to lay low. The story then shifts and fast
forwards to Ottawa in the December of 1871, about five to seven months later. Father Ritchot has
arranged a meeting with John Alexander Macdonald to discuss amnesty for Louis Riel's crimes.
Father Ritchot immediately confronts John Alexander Macdonald, demanding to know why the
amnesty was not granted. John Alexander Macdonald responds by

The Christus St. Joseph Hospital's System
CHRISTUS ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL SYSTEM Christus health, a Catholic health ministry, will be
a leader, a partner and an advocate in the creation of innovative health and wellness solutions that
improve the lives of individuals and communities so that all may experience God's healing presence
and love. This is the mission of Christus St. Joseph Hospital. The Christus health is unique. We unite
fundamentals of Christianity, hospitality and health care with a foundation of the management and
staffing "nuts and bolts" essential to support our facilities and residences. It is a fact that our
environment is progressively more competitive. It is also a fact that funding sources and financing
are intricate and unpredictable. Financing for organizations is limited, so new programs and
structural modifications to augment operations and stay competitive are restricted. Additionally, we
serve a population, in quest of different stages of health care, and the very consumers that we seek
out to serve are finding it more and harder to pay for the level of care that they need. So, how can an
organization meet cutthroat pressures, progress access for our residents and their families, and keep
the staff working efficiently with smaller number of resources? The answer to this dilemma is
Strategic Planning. Since a person has to deal with different people in any work, it is imperative that
they have a vast knowledge on personality in order to read the behavior of another person.

The Missouri River's the longest river in North America. It starts in Western Montana and ends
North of St. Louis, Missouri. Most people think that the Missouri River was made over 30 million
years ago, but because its changed its stream over time, the current course of estimation is at 115,
000 years old. The first human life emerged in the valley of the Missouri river past 12 thousand
years ago. The banks of the Missouri River were settled on by more than 10 different tribes of
Native Americans. The word Missouri can be defined from the language of some of the tribes as

The Spirit Of The Pony Express
Today people communicate through text and email and think nothing about it because they can get a

someone. "The mail was delivered by either stagecoach or by boat and it would take up to 21 days
to get a letter to someone" (Pony Express). In the 1860's a group of men invented a faster mail
delivery service called the Pony Express. The Pony express transformed the ingenuity of America by
the delivery of a faster mail service and the legend of the men crossing through dangerous territory.

proved that the mail could be delivered in ten days. "The mail arrived in St. Joseph at 5:00 pm while
the mail arrived in Sacramento shortly after midnight on the same day" (Turrentine).
The Pony express had over 400 horses and around 200 men working at one point. It took over 75
horses to make a one way trip from Missouri to California. When men made a delivery their horses
were traded out every 10–15 miles and they would switch off with another guy every 75–100 miles.
When they would switch out horses or men it would take about two minutes to switch out.
A one way trip would take men an average of 10 days to make. "The trail from Missouri to
California was about 2000 miles long and it had about 190 different stations along the trail"
(Bradley).
The men that worked for the Pony Express and that would deliver male had to "weigh less than

Marne Turning Point
I am doing my paper on The first and second battle of Marne. The first battle was more important
from a historical standpoint which I agree with because it was a major turning point in the war.
Some historians believe that if the allies hadn't won this battle they would've lost the war. I am going
to be writing about why I think the first battle of the Marne is the most important battle of World
War One. Im going to start with some description of the battle. Then in the end i will use evidence
from my writing to why I think this is the most important battle of World War One.

He decided to launch a diversion attack further south. This was to lure Allied troops away from the
main attack in Flanders. These attacks were Ludendorff's attempts to divide and conquer the French
forces. The French were joined by about 85,000 troops from the United States as well as a portion of
the BEF (BEF were mostly in Flanders) and had hundreds of tanks ready. When the Germans began
their advance after artillery bombardment they found out the French had set up false trenches and
artillery positions manned by very few defenders. The real front line of trenches was further away
and was barely scratched by the bombardment. The Germans had been deceived by French
Commander in Chief Philippe Petain. The Allies then formed a massive counter attack to end the
German army for good.
I believe the Battles of the Marne are the 2 most important battles of World War One. The first battle
was very important in keeping the French in the war. And setting up a standstill for around 4 years.
Without this battle I don't think the Allied powers would have won the war. France most likely
would have fallen if they wouldn't have held strong at the Marne. If France would've fallen many
historians believe that the end of the war would've been different with the Central powers on top.

How Does Joseph K. Toole Create Justice In Montana
On November 8, 1889, Montana became the 41st American state. Joseph K. Toole was the first
governor, while Helena was the capital city. Railroads changed the Montana Territory. The first
transcontinental railroad, connected Chicago, Illinois, with Sacramento, California, was finished in
1869, but the track was far south from the Montana Territory. The settlers needed a railroad passing
through it to bring more people. Violent crime in this territory started up vigilantes. Their purpose
was to bring justice to the Montana mining areas, but they used lawless methods to enforce their
ideas. The journey taken by many newcomers to Montana needed both steamboat and land
transportation. Steamboats mainly left St. Louis and went up the Missouri River as far as Fort
Benton in north–central Montana. In 1867 alone, some 10,000 travelers arrived at Fort Benton.
From Fort Benton, they took horse–driven wagons or walked to the expanding communities of
Helena, Butte, Virginia City, and Missoula. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twenty different languages were spoken in the city of Helena alone, and nearly half the men in the
Montana Territory had been born abroad. Montana's nickname is the Treasure State. The reason is
because of all the precious materials, gold, silver and copper, which were found in many mines.
Long before two explorers, Lewis and Clark, wrote about the purplish–pink flower of the bitterroot,
Native Americans used the roots for eating trading. People dug up its roots and dried them so they

Russian Hockey Research Paper
Russians are known to have played a form of hockey already in the 19th century. Instead of a puck
they used a ball and the ice surface was almost as big as a soccer field. The game was called
"Russian hockey" and it evolved into what is more widely known as "Bandy", which is still played
today in different nations, like Russia, Sweden and the USA. The first recorded hockey game
between Russians and foreigners took place on the frozen Neva River in St. Petersburg in 1899
between a local team and a group of resident Englishmen.
In December 1946, they began to play the first USSR championship matches. The first Soviet
hockey champion was Dynamo Moscow followed by the Red Army team, which was led by a young
playing coach named Anatoly Tarasov.

Within the time period of 1801– 1809 Thomas Jefferson was President and participated in the
Louisiana Purchase. America bought 820,000 square miles from France. (All land that stretched
from the Mississippi river, in total 15 states were bought from the purchase.) With this amount of
un–known land, Jefferson called for an exploration and hired Meriwether Lewis, Jefferson's
secretary, due to his penmanship and frontiersman skills. Lewis grew up in Virginia and served in
the United States Army along with William Clark. When Lewis was asked to command the
expedition he then appointed Clark to be leader along with him. Clark also grew up in Virginia, and
was known for his skills in map making and guiding the men. Jefferson was hoping to find a
waterway connecting the Colombia and Missouri Rivers, by doing this the waterways would then
connect the Pacific Ocean and the Mississippi River. Thus making trade across America more
productive. Because of the Louisiana Purchase America desired to understand their land to not only
adapt to it, but to use it in the most effective way. Within this necessary journey, men risk their lives
to shape and educate America through their documentation kept and inspiring story.
The Lewis and Clark expedition first started with Thomas Jefferson bringing the journey up to the
United States Congress. He brought the

Fort Wayne History
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "We are not makers of history. We are made of history." The city
of Fort Wayne is a historical community in many ways. Fort Wayne was considered as a crossroad
by early settlers and Native Americans because of its locational value at the converging point of the
three rivers; the St. Mary's, the St. Joseph, and the Maumee Rivers. The city of Fort Wayne is named
after General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. He was a bold leader in the military, who established the first
American fort. This fort was right at the meeting point of the three rivers. Fort Wayne was originally
the region where the capital of the Miami nation was located, at that time known as Kekionga.

Mission Of The Mission Santa Clara
The Mission Santa Clara is a historical California site that is laid in the center of the Santa Clara
University. In 1777, it established and founded by the Franciscan Order. The mission's purpose was
to be the sister mission to Mission Dolores that is in San Francisco. Due to Mexico withdrawing
from the Spanish Empire, the King of Spain and his Viceroy, the ones sponsoring the missions, were
no longer in power. The Mexican government didn't have enough resources and was not interested
to maintain and upkeep the distant missions, removing the Spanish Franciscans. With little funds,
the mission perished slowly until the ownership of the mission was passed over to the Society of
Jesus, also called the Jesuits, in 1851. They made Santa Clara college and today, Mission Santa
Clara is used as a student chapel and opened to the public. Mission Santa Clara is set in the middle
of Santa Clara University (which can be seen in the Santa Clara University's campus map), located
in the Bay area. When it was founded, the city of Santa Clara was seen as a good place to set the
mission due to it having fertile land, mild climate that makes for comfortable living, and abundance
of game in the area. In front of the mission, there stands the Mission Cross. At the base of the cross,

The Most Important American Woman Writers Of The 19th Century
Noble Yet Contradictory American Women Writers of the 19th Century
Fighting for One Cause
Written expression is a beautiful thing and one of which is a freedom in which Americans are
granted, upon becoming citizens of the United States. Harriet Beecher Stowe is known as "The most
important American woman writer of the nineteenth century" (Showalter, Ch. Harriet Beecher
Stowe). Famous for Uncle Tom's Cabin, Stowe published ten novels during her writing career.
Stowe began writing in the 1830's to support her family of seven children and husband, Calvin
Stowe. Stowe wrote with a comedic tone, yet, she also had intentions of writing for a purpose of the
weakening of human ethics and the troubles of servitude. She was a very bright, ... Show more

That 'ere's so now, ain't it?" (Showalter, Ch. Harriet Beecher Stowe) The language of Sam's
character is showing both his lack of education and also proper knowledge of the English language.
His aunt chimes in dialect from time to time in the story, but seems to be slightly more proper than
her nephew, "My opinion is that if folks don't mind their own business, and do with their might what
their hands finds to do, the Millennium won't come at all" (Showalter, Ch. Harriet Beecher Stowe).
It is interesting to see how Stowe, even in the nineteenth century, recognizes the importance of an
education, along with proper English, and implements these stereotypes throughout her fictitious
stories. With this noted, it shows how informal her writing style appears and appeals to various
readers whom may pick up her book(s). For example, the highly educated readers enjoying this title
may delight in mocking the poor literacy of Sam. Conversely, one who has little education may be
able to pick up on phonetic words that the author has created, laughing along with Sam struggling to
see the Aunt's perspective. For example, ""Why, lordy massy, boys," he would say, "I can't bear to
see no kind o' critter in torment. These 'ere pouts ain't to blame for bein' fish, and ye ought to put 'em
out of misery. Fish hes their rights as well as any on us" (Showalter, Ch. Harriet Beecher Stowe). In

In 1860, a mail carrying service called Central Overland California and Pike 's Peak Express

To be honest, no one is exactly sure who actually came up with the idea to bring The Pony Express
to America. There are varied opinions as to who it was, but none can be properly confirmed. "Some
attribute the idea for the Pony Express to B.F. Ficklin, the general superintendent of the huge
Russell, Majors, and Waddell freight and stage company, who is said to have shared his notion of a
relay of horse riders carrying the mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, with
California Sen. William M. Gwin while the two traveled on horseback from San Francisco to
Washington, D.C., in 1854. In January 1855 Gwin introduced a bill to finance a system of weekly
service across the frontier along a central route, but this bill too failed. Others credit William H.
Russell (of Russell, Majors and Waddell), who is said to have discussed the concept of a horse–relay
system with John B. Floyd, the U.S. secretary of war, in early 1858. Still other possible originators
include John Scudder, a Russell, Majors and Waddell employee, who claimed that he and coworkers

The Other Side Of The River By Alex Kotlowitz

Twin Cities, Twin Races Reading the book, The Other Side of the River, by Alex Kotlowitz, the
author writes about the relationship between two towns in Michigan, and the death of a young boy
named Eric McGinnis. The two towns, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, are called the "Twin Cities",
but are ironically not related in any way. St. Joseph is 95 percent white, while Benton Harbor is
impoverished and is 92 percent black. Throughout the book Kotlowitz questions the residents from
both towns and how they are affected by the environment around them. The author also starts with
the climax on the first page of the book – the death of Eric, and uses this as an technique to tell the
story of the disagreements between the two towns. With the murder of Eric, Kotlowitz identifies the
climax at the beginning of the book and how it has been affecting the two towns which are
physically only two and a half miles apart, and the river that flows between them only being a
quarter of a mile wide. St. Joseph is a rich area while Benton Harbor is in poverty. This is relevant to
the state of Michigan because many bodies of people migrate to certain regions of the state and are
easily divided by different cultures and beliefs. Even with a small river providing the gap between
these two regions, Michigan is known for its divided groups of people. With this division, the death
of Eric with his drowning in the river resided

The Battle Of Quebec And The British Army
The Battle of Quebec took place on 13 September 1759. This battle was part of the French and
Indian War between the French Army and the British Army. The French–Indian war was the North
American front of the Seven Years' War, which was fought on the European continent and on the
Indian subcontinent. The outcome of the Battle Of Quebec would prove pivotal in determining who
would control Canada. The British exhibited successful tactics in deception, exploited false
assumptions, took audacious actions, and benefited from unity of effort. The French suffered due to
a lack of standardization between regular army and militia members, which led to an embarrassing
defeat at Quebec. Events leading to the Battle Many European empires began serious colonization
efforts of North America in the1500's. The main colonizers of North America were the French,
Spanish and British. The British colonization efforts were concentrated along the east coast of
America, while the French began their colonization in Canada. Sieur de La Salle, a French explorer,
traveled down the Mississippi river to the Gulf of Mexico in the mid 1500s. France claimed
ownership of "everything from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rockies" (Davis). France now had
two major colonies consisting of Canada, and Louisiana as well as control of overland trade routes
connecting the two colonies. In 1754 colonial growth forced the English to expand west of the

Helens is a significant mountain to those familiar with it because of its large eruption which

Basalt is the most dominant rock found in the area surrounding Mt. St. Helens1. The tephra deposits
are found all around Mount Saint Helens and its surrounding areas. Lapilli, course ash, and fine ash
specifically make up the tephra deposits that are found in this area1. This western Washington
Mountain has been actively erupting for approximately 50,000 years, because it has been erupting
for so long means that this mountain possesses very old rock over the past 50,000 years that can be
found in the deepest area under its base and hardened lava flow from previous explosions.
The mountain is a stratovolcano and is a symmetrical cone shape with steep sides . Mount Saint
Helens consists predominantly of ash and the hardened lava that has come from the volcano in
previous eruptions2. As Boron also mentions, the volcano's shape is defined as a stratovolcano due
to its ability to have the explosive eruptions that are forced out of its openings, and the pyroclastic
flow that comes out of such a huge and forceful explosion. The visible landform that is most famous
and clearly recognized to belong to Mount Saint Helens is the expansive and deep crater that is
gashed in the top of the mountain1. This infamous crater is a result of the phenomenal explosion that
Mount St. Helens had in 1980. A portion of the Mount St. Helens volcano was built upon deeply

St. Joe Expedition

  • 1. St. Joe Expedition My research travel expedition is too Port St. Joe, Florida. With a budget of five thousand dollars and fourteen days, I could travel to, and stay in relative comfort and be within easy travel to the numerous location needed to try to find out what really happened to Old and New Iola. The small, long lost village of Iola, located in northern Gulf County Florida. Iola flourished in the late 1830's, when Florida was a new Colony of the United States. Born out of a business venture from businessmen form Apalachicola, Florida, where shipping cotton was the major industry. Apalachicola was a deep–water port that accessed the Gulf of Mexico and was a hub to northern textile mills and many foreign countries. Cotton came down the Apalachicola River on steam ships and barges from cotton fields in Alabama and Georgia. These businessmen, called Saints as a play on St Joseph, became disgruntled about a Supreme Court ruling that would force higher taxes on their businesses, so to remedy that, they created the town of St. Joseph to the west. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The St. Joe and Iola railroad as it was called, ran north from St. Joseph, across the Chipola River at the Dead Lakes on to Iola. The plan worked for a few years, and St. Joseph boomed, but the collapse of Florida currency coupled with a yellow fever outbreak doomed the Saint Joseph venture. At that time, St. Joseph was using very unstable Florida currency, whereas Apalachicola was using the much more stable currency of Alabama and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Sister Agatha Research Paper Untitled Sailing across the great waters, the St. Joseph currently housed three nuns of the Augustinian order and three from the Ursuline order with a small number of priests. These were the remaining from the original twenty–four who set sail from Normandy in April, 1639. Sister Agatha had prepared for this journey by studying under Mother Superior in the hospital. She had an aptitude for identifying diseases. As the ship glided towards the dock, Sister Agatha saw men in various attire. Most striking were the men standing stoic wearing animal skins. These must be the Natives they were taught so much about. The walkway was lowered and the priests greeted the men allowing Sister Agatha to take a long look into their eyes; she saw pain, hurt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The one in the lead of the group of men and women was that same Native man. His eyes were full of fear and desperation. Sister Agatha assessed and acted upon the situation immediately. She ran to grab towels and motioned for the men to leave. What felt like hours passed and the child was finally, safely born. Forgetting about small smiles, Sister Agatha went outside immediately with a large smile on her face showing the men all was well. Taking a few confident steps towards her, the Native man raised his right arm and motioned for her to follow him. Though she had no idea what his intentions were, she trusted him and did as he wished. Following him down the path to the river, where she would have expected to cross the river now stood a beautifully constructed bridge. On the simple rails were carvings of men carrying their dead and behind them Sister Agatha. She turned to look at the man who motioned his hands towards the entire bridge and pointed to her. She looked at him puzzled, and he then walked to the carving and pointed to the image of her. She understood, he had this built for her. She bowed her head and nodded with tears in her eyes, showing her appreciation and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Indian War : The Battle Of The American War Built by the british in 1758 during the french and indian war on the only dry and flat ground in the area. The fort had fell into unrepairable when the war widened in 1776. Resuming on 1777 general leger tried to intimadate the forts occupants by parading his troops in front of the fort. When this didnt work he sent a truce flag bearing a proclamation authored by general burgoyn. Gansevoort refused to respond. After that he began to siege all operations. encamping the regulars and artillery on a low rise north of the fort and most of the Indins and Loyalists to its south with a picket line of Indian encampments along the Mohawk River.St. Leger's artillery was held up by a tactic that was also used to slow down Burgoyne's army after the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These two units were still en route when the siege was lifted, and turned back. By August 20, Arnold, Willett and 700 Continental Army regulars had arrived at Fort Dayton. In an attempt to enlarge his force, Arnold tried to interest the Tryon County men in another attempt against St. Leger, but raised only about 100 men. He then decided to wait, hoping that friendly oneidas and tuscarlas could be convinced to join the effort, or that a request to Schuyler for another 1000 men would be fullfilled. However, news reached him that the siege had reached a critical stage, and that action was necessary. St. Leger had learned that his guns were largely ineffective against the fort's walls from long range, so he began entrenching operations to establish positions closer to the fort. Gansevoort reported that the siege trenches had reached within striking distance of one of the fort's bastions.Uncomfortable with the number of troops available to him, Arnold opted for a deception to sow trouble in the British camp. While at Fort Dayton, a number of Loyalists had been arrested, including hon yost . Arnold convinced Hon Yost, a member of the King's Royal Regiment of New York who grew up with many of the Mohawk Indians attacking Fort Stanwix to spread rumors that large numbers of Americans, under the command ofThe Dark Eagle, were about to come down on St. Leger's camp. • 7. Katerina's Short Story: Charles Bridge The street lamps cast pools of light on the wet cobbles, illuminating the heads of the saints as they keep their stony vigils on the walls of Charles Bridge. Fog rising from the river curls its tentacles between the statues, wreathing a head for a few seconds or obscuring entire sections of the ancient walls. The Viatia river flows oily and invisible thirty feet below. A bell somewhere in Hidraci strikes eleven. The sound of running footsteps batters the muffled air, and then a cry. Jakub, his bare feet filthy and bleeding, almost catches his wife's shoulder as she flees under the gothic archway of the Bridge Tower. Katerina is singing a Hungarian folk song, the penultimate song in her mother's repertoire. Jakub rattles the already heavy bag as one by one, the people, as though hypnotised by his daughter's voice, drop into it whatever notes and coins they find in their pockets. A cynical old man strumming a golden harp has realized that his subtle tones he teases out of his instrument are completely overwhelmed by the silvery flood of notes issuing from Katerina's mouth. He marches along the bridge and shouts to the people, "Why are you listening to this silly child? Can't you hear she has the voice of a common music hall singer? My glass harmonica is far more rare. You'll not see another like it in the city!" The audience takes no note of him, annoyance written on their face as he interrupts the girls singing. The old man is furious at being ignored, his eyes blazing black and furious in his bone–white face. He pushes his way through the crowd, shouldering people aside until he reaches the front of the semicircle which has formed around the girl. She has just begun her final song. • 9. St Joseph Research Paper Deep in the thick swamps and woods of Northern Gulf County, amidst the buzz and sting of mosquitoes, chirps of squirrels, and swirls of the Apalachicola, is a long–lost story. One hundred and eighty years ago the town of Iola sprang out of the cypress swamp of what is now north east Gulf County. That small community, was, and still is an enigma in the wilderness of territorial Florida and has all but faded from the memory of Gulf County and is nothing but a boat ramp now. You cannot discuss Iola without first discussing Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph began its short life in the mid 1830's after a Supreme Court decision on the Forbes land grants in nearby Apalachicola. Forbes & Co. was formerly the Panton & Leslie Co, located in Pensacola. The Panton & Leslie Co. was a trading company that acquired a substantial amount of land along the Apalachicola River and surrounding area of lands prior to Florida becoming a United States colony. By an agreement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Businessmen E.J. Wood and Rev Peter W. Gautier started to plan for a way to gain access to the "Apalach". Lake Wimico, about eight miles away, could access the river by bayous, so the Saints, as the Saint Joseph businessmen began to call themselves, first decided on a canal to bring the cargo from the steamboat to the wharf. The Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Canal Company was chartered by the legislative council of the territory of Florida in 1835 and later renamed to the Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Canal and Railroad company. The canal never made it off the drawing table before a railroad replaced it. In October 1835, Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Canal and Railroad Company broke ground on the first steam railroad in Florida. It ran from Depot Creek on Lake Wimico, to Saint Joseph. • 11. Still Water Case Study The beautiful town of Stillwater is located on the St. Croix river in the St. Croix River Valley and is known as the Birthplace of Minnesota. The early days of Stillwater were uncertain and uneasy as the land was fought over for many years. The coveted land transitioned from being part of Wisconsin territory to being included in Washington county in 1938. All the while, lumbering interests drew many to the area and white settlers took up residence in Stillwater. One former soldier, Indian trader, Justice of the Peace and promoter, Joseph Renshaw Brown had been in the area since 1820. He had set up a store and farm at Grey Cloud Island and kept a warehouse at the head of Lake St. Croix to supply upriver fur trading operations. This warehouse, which was located where North Stillwater stands today, grew into a small village that he called "Dacotah". In 1840 the first ferry was licensed to operate across the St. Croix. So Joseph Brown gathered settlers in this region and formed the Stillwater Convention to draft a Memorial to send to congress suggesting that this new territory be created and called "Minnesota." Henry Sibley delivered this petition to congress and helped speed the process along, and the Minnesota Territory was officially organized in March of 1849. This, after all, is why Stillwater is referred to as the birthplace of Minnesota. On March 4, 1854, John McKusick was elected Mayor of Stillwater and Stillwater was incorporated as a city. • 13. Jane Eyre Phrenology Essay Phrenology is the study of attributing specific personality traits and behaviors to specific portions of the head, and was discovered by Franz Joseph Gall sometime in either the 18th or 19th century (Gross). The word phrenology is derived from two Greek words meaning "mind" and "knowledge" (Price). His revolutionary, although faulty and erroneous, science of the mind changed the study of psychology. Victorian England was a supporter of Gall's work, and was a popular method of trying to understand the fellow man. Jane Eyre, a novel written by Charlotte Brontë, depicts many unique characters, including that of the main protagonist. Jane Eyre is an unusual girl when compared to others of her time in society, and was rarely understood. Through the use of phrenology, Jane's personality and behaviors could be attributed to her cephalic anatomy. To be concise, Jane is perceived as weird because of the shape of her head. Although this science is nonsensical to modern scholars, phrenology was accepted in the English society of the 1700s by the world of academia. Phrenology could be easily used to examine and study the mind of Jane Eyre in those days, and could have happened in the novel if Brontë had wished to do so. Jane declares that, "If [she does] join St. John, [she] abandon half [herself]" (Brontë 775). There are several other important faculties displayed on the board and explained in the ... Pokagon was Kidnapped from his Chippewa village by a Potawatomi chief and given to Chief Topenebee of the Potawatomi. He was given the name Pokagon because the headdress that he was wearing included a human rib. The word Pokagon means "rib". However, in a book written by his son Simon Pokagon, he disclosed that Pokagon was born Anishinabe, one of the Three Council Fires, and adopted into the Kitichigumi (Great Lakes) Potawatomi clan. The tribe to assist them in converting to Christianity trusted a Baptist missionary Isaac McCoy. McCoy was a double agent. He was in favor of the tribe's removal. Leopold Pokagon worked to find a way to keep his tribe from having to leave their land. In 1830, he went to Detroit to meet with Catholic officials to request a "Blackrobe" or a priest to be assigned to his tribe. Pokagon felt that joining the Catholic Church would counteract the Baptists and an important help in their fight against removal. By converting to Catholicism, the St. Joseph River Valley Potawatomi were renamed the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. In 1833, the Americans wanted more Potawatomi land, so they met in Chicago to propose another treaty. According to this treaty, the Potawatomi were to move to Missouri and would receive 5 million acres of land and a contract for regular yearly payments for 20 years. The treaty also wiped out any debt that the tribes owed to fur traders. Leopold Pokagon contested giving up more land. He negotiated an amendment to the treaty that allowed his band to remain in Michigan. • 19. Louis Riel Summary The second part of the comic strip biography "Louis Riel" by Chester Brown, starts off in early September 1870 in St. Joseph, Dakota territory. Louis Riel is reading a note which talks about how the Canadian soldiers have wreaked havoc on the Red River Colony. It talks about how some Métis men had been murdered and quite a few were beaten. Women had also been raped in the settlement too. "The Canadian soldiers have brought a reign of fear to the Red River settlement." This is an excerpt from the note Louis Riel was reading. Also, Schultz returned and was basically running things. The comic–strip biography then fasts forwards to the summer of 1871. Louis Riel is reading another note now. This one is talking about how the land the people of the settlement had been promised by the Canadian government was being given to people from Eastern Canada. The exceptional rich farmland was being given to the British farmers and the requests for land were being delayed. After this Riel goes to his mother's house in the settlement and finds that many of the soldiers have went home. His mother though, warns him to lay low. The story then shifts and fast forwards to Ottawa in the December of 1871, about five to seven months later. • 21. The Christus St. Joseph Hospital's System CHRISTUS ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL SYSTEM Christus health, a Catholic health ministry, will be a leader, a partner and an advocate in the creation of innovative health and wellness solutions that improve the lives of individuals and communities so that all may experience God's healing presence and love. This is the mission of Christus St. Joseph Hospital. The Christus health is unique. We unite fundamentals of Christianity, hospitality and health care with a foundation of the management and staffing "nuts and bolts" essential to support our facilities and residences. It is a fact that our environment is progressively more competitive. It is also a fact that funding sources and financing are intricate and unpredictable. Financing for organizations is limited, so new programs and structural modifications to augment operations and stay competitive are restricted. Additionally, we serve a population, in quest of different stages of health care, and the very consumers that we seek out to serve are finding it more and harder to pay for the level of care that they need. So, how can an organization meet cutthroat pressures, progress access for our residents and their families, and keep the staff working efficiently with smaller number of resources? The answer to this dilemma is Strategic Planning. Since a person has to deal with different people in any work, it is imperative that they have a vast knowledge on personality in order to read the behavior of another person. Personality ... The first battle was more important from a historical standpoint which I agree with because it was a major turning point in the war. I am going to be writing about why I think the first battle of the Marne is the most important battle of World War One. Im going to start with some description of the battle. Then in the end i will use evidence from my writing to why I think this is the most important battle of World War One. These attacks were Ludendorff's attempts to divide and conquer the French forces. The French were joined by about 85,000 troops from the United States as well as a portion of the BEF (BEF were mostly in Flanders) and had hundreds of tanks ready. When the Germans began their advance after artillery bombardment they found out the French had set up false trenches and artillery positions manned by very few defenders. The real front line of trenches was further away and was barely scratched by the bombardment. The Germans had been deceived by French Commander in Chief Philippe Petain. The Allies then formed a massive counter attack to end the German army for good. I believe the Battles of the Marne are the 2 most important battles of World War One. The first battle was very important in keeping the French in the war. And setting up a standstill for around 4 years. Without this battle I don't think the Allied powers would have won the war. Railroads changed the Montana Territory. The first transcontinental railroad, connected Chicago, Illinois, with Sacramento, California, was finished in 1869, but the track was far south from the Montana Territory. The settlers needed a railroad passing through it to bring more people. Violent crime in this territory started up vigilantes. Steamboats mainly left St. Louis and went up the Missouri River as far as Fort Benton in north–central Montana. In 1867 alone, some 10,000 travelers arrived at Fort Benton. In 1777, it established and founded by the Franciscan Order. The mission's purpose was to be the sister mission to Mission Dolores that is in San Francisco. Due to Mexico withdrawing from the Spanish Empire, the King of Spain and his Viceroy, the ones sponsoring the missions, were no longer in power. The Mexican government didn't have enough resources and was not interested to maintain and upkeep the distant missions, removing the Spanish Franciscans. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That 'ere's so now, ain't it?" (Showalter, Ch. Harriet Beecher Stowe) The language of Sam's character is showing both his lack of education and also proper knowledge of the English language. It is interesting to see how Stowe, even in the nineteenth century, recognizes the importance of an education, along with proper English, and implements these stereotypes throughout her fictitious stories. With this noted, it shows how informal her writing style appears and appeals to various readers whom may pick up her book(s). For example, the highly educated readers enjoying this title may delight in mocking the poor literacy of Sam. Conversely, one who has little education may be able to pick up on phonetic words that the author has created, laughing along with Sam struggling to see the Aunt's perspective. The Other Side Of The River By Alex Kotlowitz Tiefenbach 1 Benjamin Tiefenbach Professor Ned Watts IAH 207 17 March 2015 Twin Cities, Twin Races Reading the book, The Other Side of the River, by Alex Kotlowitz, the author writes about the relationship between two towns in Michigan, and the death of a young boy named Eric McGinnis. The two towns, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, are called the "Twin Cities", but are ironically not related in any way. St. Joseph is 95 percent white, while Benton Harbor is impoverished and is 92 percent black. Throughout the book Kotlowitz questions the residents from both towns and how they are affected by the environment around them. The author also starts with the climax on the first page of the book – the death of Eric, and uses this as an technique to tell the story of the disagreements between the two towns. With the murder of Eric, Kotlowitz identifies the climax at the beginning of the book and how it has been affecting the two towns which are physically only two and a half miles apart, and the river that flows between them only being a quarter of a mile wide. St. Joseph is a rich area while Benton Harbor is in poverty. This is relevant to the state of Michigan because many bodies of people migrate to certain regions of the state and are easily divided by different cultures and beliefs. Even with a small river providing the gap between these two regions, Michigan is known for its divided groups of people. • 63. The Battle Of Quebec And The British Army The Battle of Quebec took place on 13 September 1759. This battle was part of the French and Indian War between the French Army and the British Army. The French–Indian war was the North American front of the Seven Years' War, which was fought on the European continent and on the Indian subcontinent. The outcome of the Battle Of Quebec would prove pivotal in determining who would control Canada. The British exhibited successful tactics in deception, exploited false assumptions, took audacious actions, and benefited from unity of effort. The French suffered due to a lack of standardization between regular army and militia members, which led to an embarrassing defeat at Quebec. Events leading to the Battle Many European empires began serious colonization efforts of North America in the1500's. The main colonizers of North America were the French, Spanish and British. The British colonization efforts were concentrated along the east coast of America, while the French began their colonization in Canada. Basalt is the most dominant rock found in the area surrounding Mt. St. Helens1. The tephra deposits are found all around Mount Saint Helens and its surrounding areas. Lapilli, course ash, and fine ash specifically make up the tephra deposits that are found in this area1. This western Washington Mountain has been actively erupting for approximately 50,000 years, because it has been erupting for so long means that this mountain possesses very old rock over the past 50,000 years that can be found in the deepest area under its base and hardened lava flow from previous explosions. The mountain is a stratovolcano and is a symmetrical cone shape with steep sides . Mount Saint Helens consists predominantly of ash and the hardened lava that has come from the volcano in previous eruptions2. As Boron also mentions, the volcano's shape is defined as a stratovolcano due to its ability to have the explosive eruptions that are forced out of its openings, and the pyroclastic flow that comes out of such a huge and forceful explosion. The visible landform that is most famous and clearly recognized to belong to Mount Saint Helens is the expansive and deep crater that is gashed in the top of the mountain1. This infamous crater is a result of the phenomenal explosion that Mount St. Helens had in 1980. A portion of the Mount St. Helens volcano was built upon deeply eroded, folded and altered volcanic rocks1. Along with the warped rocks Mt. St. Helens calls its base, it also sits upon ... Perhaps it's the Mormons who hear a skyscraper will be going up in the place where Joseph Smith saw the golden tablets"(Riley). How long can a person survive without water? What would you do if your only source of water was threatened? So what if these questions are raised by a Native person? It isn't a matter of being Native to understand it, just being human. You might also say, why don't they just buy the land so it wouldn't allow the pipeline to trespass through? They can't buy homes because they can't have mortgages. They can't receive loans to start small businesses because they don't really own their land. They can't buy and sell land among themselves without the permission of bureaucrats in Washington. What they have is what economist Hernando de Soto calls "dead capital." After staging protests over the last several weeks, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has managed to temporarily halt the construction of the $3.7 billion Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline, which would carry 470,000 barrels of oil a day from North Dakota to Illinois, doesn't actually go through the reservation land of the tribe, but tribal leaders say it's on land that has cultural significance to them.
