1. Mock Of Love
Directed by MARIYA PATEL
Released 28 APRIL
After sitting through six minutes of
acerbic yet engaging humour of the
three very charismatic
couples, down from Melanie’s
(Melanie Warner) mockery to Joe’s
(Kieran Davis) clinginess. We are all
still baffled as to what a relationship
actually is Mock Of Love is a teenage
mock style documentary focussing
on the relationships between
couples which have no link.
Director Mariya Patel took a detour
from her classic thriller genre and
decided to present audiences with
something a little more humorous.
‘’Do we ever fall in love or do we just
think we have ?’’ She definitely isn't
a fan therefore the mock style
documentary best fitted her subject
matter. After the success of Time-
less Patel decided it was time to
tweak with cinematographer
Georgia Knight since Aisha Lewis’s
conventional mid shots were exactly
what Patel needed in this teenage
mock. This feature short is about
what rightly goes down in
relationships. We all wonder what
makes those picture perfect couples
so perfect, well with Mock Of Love
we get down to the bottom of it and
scrutinize their true shades.
Melanies (Melanie Warner)
vigourous feminist character
portrays a sense of distraction to the
audience especially when Ella’s (Ella
Revon) silent yet deadly thoughts
are over the twitter feed. Melanie
could definitely become gayer, her
strident, confident, feminist self
dominates the screen.
Sarah’s (Gina Agnew) young teenage
mind is so full of sugary love we all
want to punch her. Her exasperation
for her young lover Joe ( Kieran
Davis) to become just as horrifying.
Agnew’s previous work in thrillers
did however benefit her in some
sort of a way as her over reactions
say it all. Even if you do think
everything is and always will be
happy families then you seriously
haven't seen the film with a wide
eye. Aisha’s (Shaista Hussein)
famished desire for some affection is
definitely not what most couples
want to be going through at a
‘’stable’’ point in their
relationship, and of course Sammy’s
(Hasnain Naeem) soiled masculinity
takes over his marriage and to
somewhat extent settles down.
Mock Of Love explores the complex
and of course the baffling things that
bring and keep couples together-
with a tongue firmly in check.
MARIYA PATEL.
ANTICIPATION. Solid buzz for teens
.
ENJOYMENT. A deeply engaging
mockumentry with a large sense of
humour.
IN RETROSPECT. A sense of
diversion towards the end leaves s
us unsettled rather than satisfied-
and that’s a good thing.
