The history behind the culture of the Cook Islands came from the various sources of ancient migration, and early land settlement. The islands got its
name from a British man named Captain James Cook. He landed on the island in 1773. It was in the 19th century is when missionaries started to come
to the islands. They brought with them many sicknesses as well as churches and schools to share the gospel. Through this, the island's dominate
religion is Christianity.
In the Cook Islands culture, "all the islands employed a chiefly system based on traditional legends of migration and settlement" (Cook Islands: Art
and Culture). Born to power as chiefs and inheritors, Polynesian culture before Europe's involvement, falls nothing short to that in comparison to
Greece's heroic period. Like Homer's concept in early 1200 BC, islanders adopted a similar and identical concept of belief known as, "Mana", or
power. This concept consisted of: connection, feasting, dancing, offerings of food, attitudes toward females, and the absence of individualism (Cook

Cook Islands culture is based on family and celebration. Since the Cook Islands are made up of many smaller islands, it is relevant that Cook Islanders
choose to identify first with their individual island and secondarily with the country as an entirety.

A survivor is someone who continues to persevere in spite of opposition, hardship, or setbacks. If someone is a survivor it means they remained alive
or barely alive after an event, that can either be major or minor, in which others have died. Survivors go through many trails and trials, they travel over
beaten paths just to end up getting judged (both metaphorically and mentally). Some qualities that many survivors have that helped them on their
laborious journey are strong family bonds, motivation & determination, being an independent thinker, a long–life learner, perseverance, and the use of
their resources. Like Donald Evans, he used his resources and his intuition to help save his family, and his strong family bonds made it easier. Aron

Day 1: I awoke covered in sand with the sun beating down on my face. Looking into the vast ocean upon me I knew I had survived the plane crash,
but how could I have ended up on this mysterious island? I sat there for a moment trying to piece together what had occurred. It was June 17, 1979
and I was on a plane heading to Bosnia for a mission trip when the plane encountered engine problems. There were several loud booms coming from
the cockpit when suddenly a huge explosion rips through the fuselage tearing the aircraft into several pieces. At this point I was sure death was upon
me. Somehow, I managed to survive the plummet into the ocean and swim to a piece of debris floating in the water. This was the last thing I

Life of Pi begins with an unique hook in its author's note. In the author's note, the fictional author is struggling to come up with a new book concept.
He travels to India for inspiration and this is where he meets Francis Adirubasamy, or better known as Mamaji in the book. Adirubasamy claims that
he has "a story that will make you believe in God". After he recounts on the story, the author is determined to meet up with the main character, and he
was reeled into the amazing world known as the Life of Pi. As the author listens into Mr. Patel's adventure, his main objective was to believe in God
and this was obviously completed from a quote in the author's note. "...I agreed with Mr. Adirubasamy that this was, indeed, a story to make you

When we are placed in situations of desperation, we often resort to other motives that we would normally categorize as inhumane in order to
survive:"When your own life is threatened, your sense of empathy is blunted by a terrible, selfish hunger for survival," (133). This becomes apparent
to Pi when he does not feel any sympathy towards the zebra, after the ruthless attack from the hyena. Pi has trouble coping with this behaviour as it is

"Crack!" A heavy rock shifts to the right as Aron Ralston places his hand directly under it, pinning his arm to the rock surrounding him and tearing the
skin off of his forearm. Ralston tries many different methods to escape but ultimately is forced to saw off his arm with a small knife. Aron Ralston,
Bethany Hamilton, and Hyeonseo Lee are all extraordinarily brave, persistent and patient people that made it through difficult and life–endangering
situations. Ralston exhibited the characteristic of a survivor whenever he was stuck in a seemingly hopeless situation, as did Bethany Hamilton and
Hyeonseo Lee. In order to be a survivor, a person needs patience, bravery, and persistence. One of the most important characteristics of a survivor is
patience. Whenever Hyeonseo Lee was attempting to help her family escape from North Korea, she said "I did everything to get my family to
freedom, and we came so close, but my family was thrown in jail. . . I went back and forth between the immigration office and the police station,
desperately trying to get my family out. . . I didn't have enough money to bribe or fine anymore. I lost all hope." (Hyeonseo Lee, Ted Talks).

In Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, a young boy named Pi decides to differ from the religious path he is intended for. Instead he decides to

Christianity, Hindu, and Islam. When his family decides to board a ship to Canada, the trip seems to be going well until the storm. The ship sinks

Pi is at sea for 227 days. Surviving that long alone is nothing short of a miracle. Another thing is that in Pi's second story, Pi states the tragic events
that he is put through. For example, he watched his mother get murdered, he killed the cook, and he was forced to resort to cannibalism. Pi says, "I
descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible" (197). This shows his particular struggle with keeping to his vegetarian way and how
much it hurt him that he had to break his vegetarian ways to survive. All these show why he would want to suppress this experience with a story filled
with animals. Additionally, late in his journey Pi says, "It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should
turn to God" (283–284). This shows how religiously connected he was throughout his journey. In addition, it shows how Pi could have created the

In the beginning of Life of Pi, the author opens up with a detailed description of the sloth, the different types, the speed, and the wittiness. It survives
by being slow and because of its slowness; it allows algae to grow on its body that acts like a camouflage with the surrounding moss and foliage. The

Along with the other supplies Pi found in the storage cabin were 10 orange whistles which he realized could be used as training devices to keep
himself on top of the food chain and Richard Parker on the bottom instead of the other way around. Pi seemed to be less confident and beginning
to doubt his chance of survival. Many times he contemplated jumping overboard or ways to get Richard Parker off of the boat. Pi knew he had to
do something to get off of the boat to stay away from Richard Parker if he ever did attack so he decided to build a raft. He used four buoyant oars,
lifejackets, and buoyant ropes to put together this raft and he stayed on this raft for several days. This book teaches you a lot of things you might not
expect in a novel.
In the novel are many facts from the survival guide that was on the boat such as what to eat, how to catch fish and turtles, green water is shallower
than blue water, and interact with people or inanimate objects to keep from going crazy. This book now has a double message. No longer is it just
an entertaining novel but it is now a survival guide. Pi now knew that his best chance of survival was being seen by another boat or finding land and
civilization. He concentrated now on Richard Parker and ways to make the boat go faster. He realized that the raft was acting like an anchor because
the boat's broadside was facing the waves instead of the hull. This came as an upset to
