The boost students need to
overcome obstacles
How can disadvantaged students succeed in school? For sociologist Anindya
Kundu, grit and stick-to-itiveness aren’t enough; students also need to
develop their agency, or their capacity to overcome obstacles and navigate
the system. He shares hopeful stories of students who have defied
expectations in the face of personal, social and institutional challenges.

1. Have you ever felt like an outcast at any point in your life?
2. What is your understanding of the word agency? How does that
affect someone to start achieving good things?
3. What do you think the video is trying to say about education and the
problem with it?
4. Is there anything you think schools should do to help people achieve
their individual goals?
5. Have you ever been in a situation where you have wanted to achieve
something but felt like you were not provided with the proper
resources/ people to help?
6. What do you think schools can do better to help students who face
problems with inequality?
