This document outlines a cross-curricular project for International Noise Awareness Day on April 27th, 2022. It will involve students from literacy, language, and science classes. The goals are to make students aware of different types of sounds, noise pollution as an increasing problem in cities, and health impacts of noise. Activities will include measuring noise levels in class, designing posters on imagined pleasant sounds or noise pollution, and a noise pollution crossword. The project aims to develop students' literacy, science, and IT skills through exploring sound waves, vibrations, hearing, health, and energy.
2. The International Day of Awareness on Noise (INAD) will be observed on April 27,
2022.
Teachers involved in the project:
Raquel García Hernández, Literacy Teacher in the BEP British Council
Marina Hurtado Alvarado, Language Adviser and Head of the BEP British Council
Dr. Victoria Merino Puerto, Biologist and Science teacher in the BEP British Council.
General Goals of the Project:
To inform and make students aware about the various types of sounds that
enrich the acoustic environment in which we live.
To inform and make students aware about the noise pollution which has
increasingly become a real problem in big cities.
To inform and make students aware about the impact noise pollution has on
our health and the health problems that may arise because of exposure to
high levels of noise.
This is a cross-curricular project which combines two areas:
Literacy Skills Development:
● Reading
● Writing
● Listening
● Speaking
● Soft skills
● IT Skills
Science topics
● Sound Measures
● Developed by Dangerous Decibels
● Students use a sound level meter to measure, compare and graph sound
levels in different environments.
3. ● Sound Waves
● Vibrations
● Sound
● Sense of Hearing
● Health
● Energy
Themes:
One of the themes of the day that we have chosen to work on will be
“Imagined sounds”, taken from the Italian observance of this day. This
theme is intended to stimulate students’ attention to sounds that they consider
positive and that they would like to find in a “comfortable and happy”
environment. To work on this topic the students will design a poster that will
illustrate the theme.
Noise Pollution.
ACTIVITIES
Together, our voices but not our noises will resonate and we
will pledge for a quieter world.
1. BRAINSTORMING & PRESENTATION
2. EXPERIMENTING WITH SOUND.
MEASUREMENT OF NOISE LEVELS IN THE CLASS: the days before 27th
April teachers will be measuring the noise level in the class and will be
collecting the data in a chart, so that, after receiving the explanations about
healthy noise levels, students can analyse the noise register of their class.
3. DESIGN A POSTER: “Imagined sounds”. The students will design a poster
that will illustrate the theme.
Directions: Pay attention to sounds that you consider positive and
that you would like to find in a “comfortable and happy”
environment. Design a poster that will illustrate the theme. THE
SOUNDS OF MY LIFE. Which sound makes you feel relaxed? Which
cheers you up? What is the sound that makes you thrilled? Is there
4. any which makes you nervous? The sound that you find most
disturbing? Any sound which brings you good memory? Design a
poster which shows them all.
ASSESSMENT OF THE POSTER: Rubric.
4. Noise Pollution CROSSWORD: When It’s Loud, Protect Your Hearing
Sound advice for young ears
What is NOISE POLLUTION? According to National Geographic, noise pollution
can cause health problems for people and wildlife, both on land and in the sea. From
traffic noise to rock concerts, loud or inescapable sounds can cause hearing loss,
stress, and high blood pressure. Noise from ships and human activities in the ocean
is harmful to whales and dolphins that depend on echolocation to survive.
ALL THE STUDENTS (and teachers) WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A FREE
BOOKMARK FOR THEIR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT.
