El Greco Fallacy Reaction Paper
Reaction Paper 2 Firestone and School's (2014) research aims to use the logic of the El Greco Fallacy in order to rule out top–down effects on
perception. The theory of the El Greco Fallacy is that this Spanish artist who painted distorted figures could not have had a perceptual problem, like
astigmatism, because the distorted perceptions would cancel out when he looked at the canvas, leaving no distortion. This theory was applied to two
case studies involving perceptual effects. Firestone and Scholl wanted to determine if the evidence was lacking a hypothesis that the perceptual effects
should not occur. The hypothesis tested by Firestone and Scholl (2014) is that if the logic of the El Greco Fallacy is applied to the existing case
studies, then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each replicated case study also showed the presumed perceptual effects, as well as the El Greco Fallacy effect. Case study 1, which examined spatial
perception, included experiments 1–3. In experiment 1 the subjects were randomly assigned to hold a rod or not and then to view one of two apertures.
The subjects were also told that during the experiment they would have to walk through the aperture (although this was purposeful misinformation);
these were the independent variables. The dependent variable of experiment 1 was that the subject had to determine the width of the aperture after
imagining walking through it. The experimenter held a measuring tape and directed the subject to give an exact measurement. Experiment 2 replicated
experiment 1, except instead of using a measuring tape, the experimenter had a second aperture. The subject had the experimenter maneuver the
aperture to be the same width as the original aperture, again after imagining walking through the aperture. Experiment 2 introduces the El Greco
Fallacy – if there was in fact a visual perception effect, then the subjects

As I look at the painting of The Adoration of The Shepherds, two artists, Andrea Mantegna and El Greco, showed it different ways with same subjects.
First, the title of the paintings is about Jesus's birth. Andrea mantegna artist had lived from ca 1430 to 1506. He established his reputation when he
was 20 years old. This painting is the evident of his highly individual style. He worked it during ca 1451 to 1453. He painted it in horizontal format
with 153/4x217/8(40x55.6). He used tempera on a canvas that transferred from a wood. In difference, El Greco(Spain 141–1641) worked it with oil
color on canvas by vertical format. The size is 125 5/8x707/8(319x180cm). In Greco's painting, the objects are full on the canvas ... Show more content

The angel figures in El Greco's are as humans that they are looking something like a name list. Holy Maria is in the each of the paintings, but the
Maria in El Greco's painting is just looking at the baby. But Maria is praying to God in Mantegna's painting.
I see differences between the two pictures about painting styles. In Mantegna, it is painted sensitively in every figures that all of clothes wrinkles
are showed. This painting is a detailed realistic work. Also, the mountain and the land have many lines to show realism. However, Greco's
painting is worked as tone by colors. It feels smooth, but is heavy surrounding. It is used by oil colors, so it is painted smoothly. It is worked very
well. However, the Mantegna's painting is showed very brightly with tempera colors. The brushes are stroked strongly, but it is also worked well.
The settle of the Greco's painting is in inside; however, Mantegna's painting has the landscape in outside. This painting seems that the time is
arternoon. Greoc's painting is focused to angels who are placed on top. However, Mantegna's painting is focused to Holy Maria who is placed in
middle side.
Each artist showed their own styles, so I can see the different styles of the paintings. Although it feels differently, the both of the paintings are
successful work that used nice colors at that time. However, I like Greco's work because the

Remembering Hurricane Mitch
In 1998 we had seen the deadliest hurricane of the 20th century hit the Caribbean, Central America and parts of South America. This natural disaster
had massive effects on the region from environmental to economic effects. It sent numerous countries in to a state of emergency and was fighting to
keep their countries in order. This paper will focus on the aftermath and effects Hurricane Mitch had on the region.
Hurricane Mitch had brought widespread destruction and turmoil to many countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. This hurricane was very
interesting because it had lasted from October 22, 1998 until November 9, 1998. Over this period of time it had turned in to a Category 5
hurricane which is the strongest one can get to. A Category 5 hurricane is when winds reach in excess of 157 mph. Catastrophic damage will
occur and a high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will also happen
in isolated areas. This being a Category 5 Hurricane was able to last for a long time and was felt as far south as Panama and eventually hit as far north
as Florida.
Honduras
The first country Hurricane Mitch made landfall with was Honduras and subsequently it was also the one that took the greatest amount of damage. It
was so large and devastating that it had reached just about the whole population while it hovered over the country for days. While it slowly hovered
over Honduras it had dumped torrential

Art Analysis: The Above Image By El Greco
The above image is a painting created by Spanish–Greek artist El Greco around 1570. It depicts a story from the Bible (variants of which exists in
several of the Gospels, including John 9, Mark 8:22–25, and Luke 18:35) in which Jesus heals "a man blind from birth" (John 9:1). According to the
Metropolitan Museum website, the man and woman in the central foreground of the painting are likely the blind man's parents. This means this painting
probably depicts the John 9 story, as that is the only one of Jesus' blind–healing miracles that refers to the blind man's parents. It is also the only
instance of the blind miracle story that involves the Pharisees. In any case, it is a powerful and meaningful depiction of one of the many miracles of
Jesus, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Borg's words compassion is necessary because "growth in compassion is the sign of growth in the life of the Spirit" (61). El Greco's piece is
clearly illustrative of Jesus' system of compassion, and portrays Jesus as a compassionate and empathetic friend, an understanding I have had of him
my entire life. And, as implied in this painting, Jesus occupies a purer and justified position with his subversive wisdom, contrary to what the
Pharisees and legislators at the time believed. Jesus is one who believes that compassionate works should occur all the time, and at any time, regardless
of the Sabbath, and regardless of who needs the help. At the same time, compassion in good works is just as necessary as the work itself; Jesus
demonstrates his compassion by holding the man's hand. This lends him and his system a far more accessible and inviting aura than the harsh
repressions that Pharisees of the purity system upheld. Ultimately, though, those repressions and regulations are meaningless and insubstantial systems

Painting : The View Of Toledo By El Greco
View of Toledo is an artwork by El Greco dated to 1599–1600. The painting's present location is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is a large oil
painting 47 3/4 x 42 3/4 in. El Greco depicts landscape of the city Toledo, where he lived for a long period of his life. The artist faithfully depicted
real architecture of Toledo, however he rearranged some buildings, e. g. moving cathedral next to the royal palace. The View of Toledo wasn't meant
to be an accurate geographical description, but emblematic view of the city. Though the artwork can be classified as genre painting, the artist could
transform steady terrain view into organic landscape. By using carefully organized composition and lively brushstrokes, El Greco masterly conveyed the

The figures are very tiny and barely noticeable. The landscape and the city predominate the composition.
The artist uses a dark palette: deep blue for the sky, darker green for the trees, grey for the buildings. Buildings and clouds are touched with highlights.
The elements of the landscape are separated by intense shadows. Riverbanks, curves between the hills, contours of the architecture have black outline.
Overall somber tone adds depth to the scene and the intensity of the color makes the composition more expressive.
Viewer can easily spot the artist's hand. Defined texture of some areas of the painting gives an idea about how El Greco was "molding" the View of
Toledo. The trees at the bottom and the sky are painted with long flowing brushstrokes, hills on the left side have fluid–like surface, hills on the horizon
are done with short and sharp brushstrokes. We can follow the artist's brush and create painting together with him. This visible movement of artist's
hand introduces dynamism to the entire composition. Together intensity of the color and readable artist's hand turn ordinary view into energetic
landscape.
The painting can be divided into two parts: land at the bottom and sky on top. Noticeably, sky takes almost a half of the painting. It suggests
importance of this element for the entire composition. Indeed El Greco's depiction of a heaven is very

What Are The Similarities Between Mannerism And Realism
Mannerism and Realism are two periods in the history of art that did not born by themselves but were part of a greater movement or originate because
they do not accept the convention of the previous movement. In these essay the main artists from these two movement will be compared in order to
show how art has changed over three centuries of world changes. The first artist that will be analyzed is El Greco from Mannerism and the second one is
Gustave Courbet, a representative of Realism. An interesting fact about these two artist is that even though they lived in different epochs they have
chosen the same theme for one of their paintings and this allows to a more detailed comparison in order to see how the historical context and the

El Greco was fascinated by the Italian Reinassance and by Mannerism, he uses art to express his religious fervor and devotion in paintings like
"Burial of Count Orgaz" instead Courbet is living in a period of political instabily and fights for the civil rights so he found himself closer to
Realism, an art movement that express these values and produce his masterpiece "Burial at Ornans" to show that common people have the same
dignity and were not inferior to other social classes such as aristocracy and that art should focus more on the depiction of the common. The transition
from what is pleasant and idealized to what is its opposite is abrupt and not gradual and it is caused by political events like the French reovolution
where the painters, spokesman of the society along with writers, refused to represent what is good to be seen but the reality that still should be valued
and this is why the Burial at Ornans had become more popular and appreciated over time even though at the beginning it was highly criticized instead
The Burial of Count Orgaz can be clearly put in the category of religious art in this case intepreted according to the Mannerist convections. However
nothing is removed to the creativity of these two artist that have interpreted the same theme to reach two completely different results that will remain
unique in art

Our Moving Fate: A Study of El Greco's Assumption of the Virgin
El Greco painted his "Assumption of the Virgin" in 1577 for the convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, Spain. Born in Greece as Domenikos
Theotocopoulos, (his nickname translates from Spanish into "The Greek"), El Greco was the top artist of the Spanish School, and was commissioned to
paint "Assumption" to adorn the convent's altar. The painting is a daunting size–over six feet wide and twice as tall–surrounded by a wooden frame
tinted with a non–uniform metallic gold paint. The oil on canvas creates some, although not obvious texture, and brush strokes are visible only slightly
in the garments of the human subjects. The Virgin Mary is the main figure in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An in–depth study reveals mankind's literal presentation of Mary to God for appraisal and judgment, rather than a simple depiction of her journey
upward. The painting illustrates man's–not God's–physical act of lifting Mary up, creating a truly dynamic canvas. To do all of this, El Greco uses
strong geometric divisions and hidden lines to take control of the viewer's eyes, and sly manipulations of gravity and forces to create an image truly in
motion. In the end, El Greco uses the painting's overwhelming size and orientation to alter perspective and succeeds in tying the viewer's fate into the
scene itself.
The initial focus of the painting is Mary as a whole, or perhaps specifically her face and outstretched arms. El Greco, however, uses a Cartesian grid to
relocate the focus to the geometric center of the canvas, a clearly intentional move necessary to create the basis of Mary's upward motion.
"Assumption" is strongly divided into four quadrants. The heavens, occupying the upper–half of the canvas, are divided in half vertically by Mary's
body, while the Earth is split by a clear part in the crowd that extends directly downward from that same line. The divine and mortal realms are
separated fittingly by a line of clouds vertically centered on the canvas. The result is a crosshairs locked in on the area just below the Virgin's feet–the
area that will become the most important part of the canvas. The

The Pieta Essay
El Greco ("The Greek"), also known as Domenicos Theotocopulos, was a painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. El Greco was
born in Crete in 1541, which was then a part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post–Byzantine art. He had trained and become a master
within that tradition and an icon painter. Among his great artworks, I would like to draw attention to "PietГ (The Lamentation of Christ)", an oil
painting. El Greco had painted this masterpiece about c.1565–70 in Italy, during the Cretan period.
El Greco, at the age of 26, like other Greek artists had travelled to Venice and came under the influence of Titian and Tintoretto. During his stay in
Italy, he widened his style with aspects of Mannerism and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a scene which is shown after Jesus was crucified, where his body has been removed from the cross and his friends and family mourn over his
body. Many artists have focused this scene by just painting four people: the body of Christ, His mother, SaintMary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea.
El Greco's Lamentation of Christ is "a translation in paint of Michelangelo's late sculptured group of the PietГ in Florence Cathedral, at the time in
Rome. The pattern and the feeling are the same. The figures of the Dead Christ, His Mother, Saint Mary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea make
one compact group. Michelangelo achieved this by his new treatment of form; El Greco by paint, by employing broader, more continuous passages
of color. The more vivid colors of Rome combine with the richer palette of Venice to convey the intensity of expression demanded by the subject. The
horizontal composition of Venice, more suited to a narrative type of subject than to the single image, is given up and is only very rarely found
appropriate in Spain. Michelangelo's PietГ group was not the only source on which El Greco drew: the arrangement of Christ's legs and his outspread
arms, no less than the idea of viewing one of the two bearers of his body from the side and the other from behind, derive from Michelangelo's
drawing for Vittoria Colonna, in which, as in El Greco's painting, the Virgin is placed behind and above Christ." (Web Gallery of

The Assumption of the Virgin
The painting "The Assumption of the Virgin" has a mannerism influence. Mannerism was a XVI century art style influenced by, and at the same time a
reaction to, the harmonious ideals of the Italian High Renaissance. Mannerism is notable for its artificial ( as opposed to naturalistic ) qualities which
favor compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier Renaissance painting. El Greco's artistic formation in Rome and
Venice, reflects the influence of roman mannerist designs (e.g Michaelangelo's masterfully polished drawings) and that of the Venetian school of
painting with its emphasis in the richness and variety of colors, the use of pigments to achieve the impression of depth and brightness, ... Show more

Sacred religious imagery was justified in the context of this invocation of the Virgin and the saints. Veneration was not idolatrous because it was
referred to the prototype represented in the image. Among the saints, the Virgin has a primordial place because she is the Mother of God and the the
prime intercessor between Man and Christ. Since the Virgin's role had been denied by the Protestants, the Catholic Church responded by emphasizing
her special status. In the Assumption of the Virgin", the Virgin is assumed to ascend to Heaven with her body preserved from corruption as a reward
for her faith and good works. Another determining factor in evaluating a painting's context is patronage and, in XVI century
Spain, this was largely either religious or monarquic. The monarquic alliance with the Catholic faith was a salient feature of the Spanish court and, in
particular, in the kingdom of Philip II.
To understand why El Greco ( which means "the Greek" since he came from Crete ) found his way to Toledo, Spain in 1577, after studying painting in
Venice and Rome, it is essential to realize that Spain, at the time, offered great opportunities for artists, largely because of the patronage of king Philip
II. The King, in particular, favored painters which followed the Mannerist style. Religious commissions were the

The Impact Of Arena On The Beginnings Of The Civil War
First, thank you very much for following the advice set out in my last memo. Through a coordinated media campaign focussed on clarifying the role
of ARENA in the beginnings of the civil war, we've been able to secure a small but consistent advantage over our FMLN opponents. However,
according to the research that my team and I have conducted, this advantage is very fragile. While El Salvadoran voters have communicated to us that
they do not blame ARENA for the start of the conflict, there is more confusion about the role of the party during the height of the war in the 1980s.
Therefore, this memo will be divided into three parts: first, a surface–level history of the conflict through the 1980s; second, potential academic

MagaГ±a's Presidency took an active and purposeful role in opposing the FMLN guerrillas through attacks on the group's primarily peasant base

the result of air force bombings of peasants trying to flee across the Honduras border or massacres committed by government infantry groups against
FMLN friendly villages such as El Mozote in December 1981. Paramilitary death squads were also incredibly active during this time period, at one
point killing six members of the opposition Christian Democratic Party (PDC), resulting in a condemnation of the MagaГ±a government by PDC
leader JosГ© NapoleГіn Duarte. The second phase of the conflict, following the election of Duarte and the PDC in the 1984–5 elections, resulted in a
reduction in government violence against civilians and attempts, although ultimately unsuccessful, to reach a peace between the FMLN and
government. The US–backed Duarte, who defeated ARENA leader Roberto d'Aubuisson amid allegations of electoral fraud, became the first civilian
President in forty years. Political murders declined significantly during his administration, although there were still civilian deaths in combat zones and
mass displacement concerns amounting to around 1500 deaths per year. Peace

Free Candide Essays : Man 's Purpose
Man's Purpose in Candide One of the main purposes of the Enlightenment was to promote reason and rationalism as a way to improve society and
politics. However, Voltaire, an influential and famous philosopher and writer during the period of the enlightenment, repeatedly criticized certain
aspects of Enlightenment philosophy. In his short story,Candide, Voltairesomewhat harshly attacks the optimism that was so popular between
philosophers during this time and instead he decides not to disregard the inescapable presence of the evil that is in nature and humans. In this piece of
literature, the protagonist of the story, Candide, experiences extreme changes in his reason and maturity. By the end of Candide's topographical and
philosophical journey, it is evident that Voltaire wanted to emphasize that man's purpose in the world is not just to simply think about what
philosophy is. Instead, Voltaire stresses that man should be an active member of a society that is more realistic and that is better suited for him in his
variation of beliefs inside a physical and psychological state. It is very clear in the beginning of the story that Voltaire desires to demonstrate both
material and mental independence within the individual, which is a job that can typically be accomplished through travel. The story is completely built
on a lively and difficult journey that is undertaken by Candide, as well as other characters in the story that are very close to him. As the story continues,

The Biblical occurrence illustrated is standardized on two levels, one above the other. The group of the three sleeping apostles fill the lower plane. We
find comparable groups of apostles in pictures by Giovanni Bellini. El Greco returns to Quattrocento etiquette, especially in the manner in which the
sleeping gray–haired apostle bends his arm around his head.
Of the abundant versions of this painting in the artist's own hand there is a smaller copy in the Museum at Lille, and other variants are to be found in
the Episcopal palace in the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires. The variant most similarly related to the painting in Budapest is the larger–scale
version in the Church of Santa Maria at Andujar which displays other works of mannerist art.
The mannerist style thrived at the same time as High Renaissance and Baroque art. Mannerism, like many other names attached to so many other

El Greco : The Greatest Spanish Painter Of The Era
Painting in Spain during the 1500's was being magnificently produced for patrons, churches, royalty, and private commissioners, which created an
intrigue for artists in neighbouring countries. A Greek artists by the name of El Greco (Greek name: Domenikos Theotokopoulos) has been known to
be titled as "the greatest Spanish painter of the era", although he was not from Spanish heritage. He was born in Crete, Greece in 1567 and spent
approximately half of his life traveling and apprenticing in Italy. El Greco had traveled to Rome, where he was influenced by the Florentine and Roman
Mannerism techniques. As El Greco traveled through Italy he worked alongside the famous artist Titian in his studio in Venice. Other artists El Greco
worked under include Tintoretto, Jacopo Bassano, and Veronese. El Greco's exploration of art through Europe finally brought him to the most
influential location of his career, Toledo in 1577. In this city, El Greco painted many of his most infamous art pieces of his career. El Greco was not
originally from Spain, yet he was and is categorized as a Spanish painter. As El Greco gained knowledge of the arts during his travels, his subject
matter evolved. El Greco was a man who was not afraid to push boundaries in his works or create additional components, which reflect him as the
artist in his paintings. The discussion of how El Greco's immigration from Crete to finally settling in Toledo was a crucial contributing factor in his

Oscar Romero was an amazing man. Even though his life was cut short, he was able to make an impact on the society that he lived in. Oscar

When Romero was elected he became good friends with Rutilio Grande. Grande was a priest of Agularies. His mission was to help the poor. After
aggravating the government, Grande was killed, along with a young boy and an older man. This event greatly affected Romero's spiritual journey.
Romero stated,

Picasso's painting entitled "Standing Figure" depicts a nude woman with her arms crossed behind her head. It was painted in 1908 during a key
period of invention and experimentation, as Picasso began to construct his paintings in a new way. The figure is translated into simplified, geometric
forms, reflecting Picasso's interest in the art of Africa and Oceania. Using only a few colors, he focuses the viewer's attention on the intersection of
these geometric forms. It seems as though Picasso uses the blue lines in this painting like some sort of directional device, drawing attention to the
outline of the woman's figure. As we discussed in class, the style of cubism uses multiple or contrasting vantage points. Another element of cubism is
simplifying more complicated scenes into geometric forms. Cubism rejected the inherited concept that art should copy nature, or that they should adopt
the traditional techniques of perspective, modeling, and foreshortening. They wanted instead to emphasize the two–dimensionality of the canvas.
Turner's "Fall of the Rhine at Schaffhausen", painted between 1805 and 1806, creates a sense of panic for the viewer. The water has an
overwhelming presence in this piece. Compared to the force of nature in the waterfall, the people and animals are dwarfed. One woman is depicted
rushing to try and save her child. Turner captured the force of the waterfall

Essay on Poverty and Inequality in El Salvador
The poverty and inequality that has plagued El Salvador since the early twentieth century stems from their rule by the Oligarchy, which dates back to
colonial times. The Oligarchy's lack of consistency in implementing and following through with reforms has prevented progress from occurring in the
country. Furthermore, the many wars and political revolts in El Salvador impeded its economic and social growth. The main focus of the Oligarchy was
to turn a profit. And because they essentially ran the economy, they assumed that their actions were best for both their profits and the country's
economy as a whole. Their selfish single–minded focus led to a growing economic inequalities, which was subsequently accommodated by ethnic and

However, the Indians were susceptible to the diseases brought over by the Spaniards, which led to a decline in the Indian population. Because the
Oligarchy viewed the Indians as disposable labor, they did not feel the need to treat them to prevent their numbers from dwindling. Instead, the
Spanish replaced them with slaves imported from Africa (Montgomery 71). This was one of the first signs of inequality brought to El Salvador by
the Oligarchy. In the seventeenth century, the demand for cacao dropped. As a result of this, El Salvador plunged into an economic depression, and
the Oligarchy had to find a new source of revenue, which they found in indigo (Montgomery 71). Indigo was profitable because of the increase in
demand for textiles in Europe at this time (Krauss 59–60). This led the Oligarchy to increase its acquisition of land in El Salvador, which was mainly
inhabited by the native Indians. On top of being extremely lucrative, indigo was far less labor–intensive than cacao was, so it became the main focus
of El Salvador's agriculture by 1600 (Montgomery 71). Unfortunately, these developments had high costs for the Indian populations. When the indigo
rotted, diseases would be brought to the Indian villages that cultivated it, killing off entire villages in several instances. When this happened, they were
merely replaced by another tribe (Krauss 60). Eventually the mistreatment of the Indians by the

Southern California Vs. El Salvador
I wake up to the warmth of the sun touching my skin; I can hear the birds chirping outside calling my name to get ready and start the day. I get out
of bed just to be attacked by two furry blurs trying to lick my face and showing me how much they love me. I know that I have a long day ahead of me
but I have no idea what I should do. I could go to the beach and feel the soft sand in between my toes or go to a store and prepare a nice dinner for
myself. So much time in a day, but I don't have a clue on how to spend it. These are the types of decisions I need to make on a daily basis. I go
outside and take in the beauty of my surroundings. Everything seems so perfect, so beautiful, as if it was supposed to look that way. El Salvador is a
wonderful place, full of wonderful people, and amazing scenery and there is no place I would rather be at the moment. Living in California is
wonderful, but it doesn't give me the culture that I am looking for. El Salvador is like my home, somewhere where I can visit once in a while, but my
real home is California where I will always want to live. Although El Salvador and California share some similarities like the settings, there are some
traits like foods, culture, and the people that make them special in their own way.
One of the common differences between El Salvador and Southern California is the food. Carl's Jr and In–N–Out are two of the most beloved fast food
restaurants that have won people's hearts and taste buds. For people who live

Race as a Factor to Be Hired for Certain Jobs
The overall goal of my interview processes and data collecting were to find answers to one question, "How do you believe race plays a factor in the
ability to be hired for certain jobs?". Also, I wanted to ask if any of the interviewees felt as if the inability to get the job was due to any stereotypes.
Over the course of different people I interview I received a wide range of answers, many of those siding with the fact that race plays an enormous part,
and most even having stories of how their race may have hindered or helped them in the past due to different racial stereotypes.
During the process of planning my interviews, I decided that I needed to choose the interviewees from a location of diversity and I felt that my own
college peers would be perfect for the task. The first interviewer I chose was a professor of the college, Jose Hernandez age 42, born and raised in El
Salvador. Professor Hernandez had lived in El Salvador until the age of 13 when his parents made the decision to move to the United States to ensure
that their children would receive better education and opportunities. Once making it the U.S., he had to learn to read, write, and speak English and has
now made it as a successful Spanish Professor at Kennesaw State University. Professor Hernandez and I decided to reserve a time during his office
hours to meet. We met around noon and the interview lasted for about forty minutes. From the interviews I had done, I received the most information

Essay A Day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
A Day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art I.Jan van Eyck's "Last Judgment" Jan van Eyck was active since 1422 and died in 1441. He was the most
celebrated painter of the fifteen–century in Europe. One of his famous works is "The Last Judgment". At first sight this work immediately attracted
my attention. The painting's stunning colors and the fact that it reminded me of a previous similar work I have seen, triggered in my mind. The
material that is used is oil on canvas, transferred from wood. The size of this work is 22 1/4 *7 2/3 in. (56.5 * 19.7cm). As I closely approached the
painting I began to realize the differences between Jan van Eyck and Michelangelo's "Last Judgment". Contrary to Michelangelo's "Last... Show more

The first sight of this painting extremely moved me. In this work, no other figures are represented and the setting is not recognizable. In the depth
of his eyes one can see the suffering and pain for our human sacrifice. As well as this one can also see the holy look on the facial expression as he
gently carries the cross. On the cross, above the left hand in Greek letters, "domenikos theotokopoulos epoiei" is written. "Christ Carrying the
Cross" is one of the most intriguing work of art. It belongs to Robert Lehman collection since 1953. Its size is 41 3/8 * 31 in. (105 * 79 cm) and
the material used to make it is oil on canvas. III.Pendant mask; Iyoba 16th century The artist's name is Benin and he is from Nigeria. He lived in

An image of a woman is very rare in Benin's tradition. However, this work of art represents the legacy of a continuous dynasty. This mask is
believed to be designed for Benin's King's mother. It is also believed that this mask was used to commemorate king's mother. The color of the mask is

Analysis Of ' El Greco Made Me '
At first while looking at the artworks it is actually not possible to figure out that the artist himself might be representing him in his piece. But after
reading the notes and knowing that the artist is also a part in the image does enhances the two works of art. For the first image of The Burial of
Count Orgaz by El Greco, he did not include his portrait in the artwork, Instead, he included an image of his son. On his son's handkerchief, he wrote,
"El Greco made me". That indicates how El Greco will live on through this painting and through his son. But he is not done here yet, placed against
the saint is one of the El Greco's landscape paintings. Such portraits do enhance the artwork a lot. In the second image of Las Menians by
Velazquez is different from the previous one as the artist is prominently found in this artwork. Left side of the image is dominated by the back of
the artists and right side by the figures. The figures including young princess, the king, and the Queen. The princess is all dressed up for her portrait
session with Velazquez. However, in the close up picture, I can see the artist seems very bored by being there. As if he just wants to finish the portrait
and leave. He has this unpleasant face that according to me does enhance the artwork and makes in more interesting. He is like the focal point of the
piece to set the artwork unique beside others.
One way is in El Greco's artwork, how he includes the image of his son instead of him to refer himself

Narrating The Nation Picasso And The Myth Of El Greco
Robert Lubar's essay "Narrating the Nation: Picasso and the Myth of El Greco" discusses the aftermath of the bloody Spanish–American war resulting
in "El Desastre del '98" in Spain which rocked the national psyche into a period of cultural dissonance. Following the Disaster, the nation quickly
found itself in an agitated period of conflicting ideas and divisive discourses, specifically between Madrid and Catalonia. Essentially, class divisions,
regional differences, and this lack of national identity was what gave way to the "Myth of El Greco" in fin–de–sГЇecle Spain. Lubar proposes that the
'myth' connected tradition and modernity whilst illustrating the middle class' pursuit to construct hegemony for Catalan cultural nationalism.

What the history of Spanish art tells us is that the writers of history construct these cultural discourses and emanate artistic rhetoric in order to
challenge institutions and ideologies existent in their times; where tradition serves to extol and preserve the comfortable customs in our lineage,
modernity serves to revolutionize and counter those very social constructs. If there is anything that has become clear to me, it is that temporality and
tradition, progressivism and modernity, all exist in an intertextual phenomena within, in relation, and in conversation with each other. As Unanomo and
Ganivet pointed out in their writings, 'tradition simultaneously informs, and is formed by, the present'. During the era of regeneration, Castille rushed
to codify culture within their targeted political positions which could be considered as a push against the State due to political corruption, whereas
Catalonia urged a reform of economy and political culture, their position was precisely a call to the government to amend that which they had

Pangloss teaches metaphysico–theologo–cosmolonigology. Pangloss states that the world is the best of all possible worlds in which all is well and

Implications Of The El Greco Fallacy : Perceptions And...
The research conducted in the "top–down" effects in perception research was guided by the El Greco fallacy. Here, it is brought to the attention of
findings that distortions must have any alternative explanation besides a literal perceptual distortion. Researchers applied this theory because of the
fact that distortions must cancel each other out, since the means of reproduction should be distorted as was the stimulus being reproduced. In their
research, authors asked if higher–level states such as moods, action capabilities, and knowledge are truly effects on perception, or if subjects reflect
influences on memory or bias. The key question attempting to be answered here is, what determines how things look? After experiment 1 results
confirm that holding a rod decreases subjects' perception of aperture width estimates, in experiment 2 researchers ask if this confirmation reflect literal
perceptual compression of the apertures. Experiment 3 asks what explains aperture–compression effects. Researchers hypothesize that the
aperture–width effects should disappear once the subjects think the rod is being held for a purpose other than for "balance". For experiment 4,
researchers ask if reflecting on unethical deeds from subject's past will estimate a low brightness of room. The question that guided the research in
experiment 5, which applied the El Greco fallacy, is, is the effect of ethical reports on lightness judgments actually perceptual? The hypotheses were

Picasso And Pablo Picasso's The Old Guitarist
Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, it is our thoughts, emotions, and a personal journal that occasionally
comes easier way to communicate what's inside of the mind. One of Pablo Picasso's most famous artworks and still known worldwide is The Old
Guitarist. Picasso painted this piece of art in the Blue Period that ran from 1901–04. This specific year is important because the Blue Period of Picasso
is when he started painting in the gloomy shades of blue and blueish–green inspired by Picasso's own emotional turmoil and financial struggle. I would
say it was the year where his emotions took over instead of his own hands, which drove him to the highest limit of creating something impressive.

The United States backed up the military leader that was in charge of El Salvador, Carlos Humberto Romero Mena to stand up against the FMLN

Author Edward T. Brett argues that Romero had a very "prophetic approach [that] was a highly effective method of leadership during his three–year
tenure of office" (Brett 717). He uses the term "prophetic" to refer to the similar ways in which Romero preached his sermons to the
underprivileged campesinos in order to also publically represent them, much like Jesus preached to the poor to represent the persecuted Christians.
However, the term itself can be problematic because also like Jesus, Romero was tormented by his fellow bishops for catering to the needs of the
poor. Not all bishops and clergymen at the time had captured the essence of liberation theology teachings and feared they were too radical to preach
to the campesinos. However, Romero believed that the equality of Salvadorans was more important than their integration into the elite society. He
focused many of his preachings on the need to put an end to violence and determine a right from wrong. In Romero's last sermon, just before "he
called for soldiers to refuse to obey orders," (Wood 27) he gave special attention to the need to reinstall distinct human rights within a country in "its
own exodus" (Romero 3) and that both groups alike should call for, "respect for the dignity of the person, hope for humanity's common good, and the

was almost extinct from my life, I lost my innocence in the world. I could now evaluate decisions on good and bad sides, having realist points on
each one. Therefore I changed my social and political view, started to write again, to make poems about the reflection of machism on society, and then I
was able to help other women get help getting out of abusive

El Greco Fallacy Reaction Paper

  • 1. El Greco Fallacy Reaction Paper Reaction Paper 2 Firestone and School's (2014) research aims to use the logic of the El Greco Fallacy in order to rule out top–down effects on perception. The theory of the El Greco Fallacy is that this Spanish artist who painted distorted figures could not have had a perceptual problem, like astigmatism, because the distorted perceptions would cancel out when he looked at the canvas, leaving no distortion. This theory was applied to two case studies involving perceptual effects. Firestone and Scholl wanted to determine if the evidence was lacking a hypothesis that the perceptual effects should not occur. The hypothesis tested by Firestone and Scholl (2014) is that if the logic of the El Greco Fallacy is applied to the existing case studies, then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each replicated case study also showed the presumed perceptual effects, as well as the El Greco Fallacy effect. Case study 1, which examined spatial perception, included experiments 1–3. In experiment 1 the subjects were randomly assigned to hold a rod or not and then to view one of two apertures. The subjects were also told that during the experiment they would have to walk through the aperture (although this was purposeful misinformation); these were the independent variables. The dependent variable of experiment 1 was that the subject had to determine the width of the aperture after imagining walking through it. The experimenter held a measuring tape and directed the subject to give an exact measurement. Experiment 2 replicated experiment 1, except instead of using a measuring tape, the experimenter had a second aperture. The subject had the experimenter maneuver the aperture to be the same width as the original aperture, again after imagining walking through the aperture. Experiment 2 introduces the El Greco Fallacy – if there was in fact a visual perception effect, then the subjects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Metropolitan Museum Essay Metropolitan Museum As I look at the painting of The Adoration of The Shepherds, two artists, Andrea Mantegna and El Greco, showed it different ways with same subjects. First, the title of the paintings is about Jesus's birth. Andrea mantegna artist had lived from ca 1430 to 1506. He established his reputation when he was 20 years old. This painting is the evident of his highly individual style. He worked it during ca 1451 to 1453. He painted it in horizontal format with 153/4x217/8(40x55.6). He used tempera on a canvas that transferred from a wood. In difference, El Greco(Spain 141–1641) worked it with oil color on canvas by vertical format. The size is 125 5/8x707/8(319x180cm). In Greco's painting, the objects are full on the canvas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The angel figures in El Greco's are as humans that they are looking something like a name list. Holy Maria is in the each of the paintings, but the Maria in El Greco's painting is just looking at the baby. But Maria is praying to God in Mantegna's painting. I see differences between the two pictures about painting styles. In Mantegna, it is painted sensitively in every figures that all of clothes wrinkles are showed. This painting is a detailed realistic work. Also, the mountain and the land have many lines to show realism. However, Greco's painting is worked as tone by colors. It feels smooth, but is heavy surrounding. It is used by oil colors, so it is painted smoothly. It is worked very well. However, the Mantegna's painting is showed very brightly with tempera colors. The brushes are stroked strongly, but it is also worked well. The settle of the Greco's painting is in inside; however, Mantegna's painting has the landscape in outside. This painting seems that the time is arternoon. Greoc's painting is focused to angels who are placed on top. However, Mantegna's painting is focused to Holy Maria who is placed in middle side. Each artist showed their own styles, so I can see the different styles of the paintings. Although it feels differently, the both of the paintings are successful work that used nice colors at that time. However, I like Greco's work because the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Remembering Hurricane Mitch In 1998 we had seen the deadliest hurricane of the 20th century hit the Caribbean, Central America and parts of South America. This natural disaster had massive effects on the region from environmental to economic effects. It sent numerous countries in to a state of emergency and was fighting to keep their countries in order. This paper will focus on the aftermath and effects Hurricane Mitch had on the region. Hurricane Mitch had brought widespread destruction and turmoil to many countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. This hurricane was very interesting because it had lasted from October 22, 1998 until November 9, 1998. Over this period of time it had turned in to a Category 5 hurricane which is the strongest one can get to. A Category 5 hurricane is when winds reach in excess of 157 mph. Catastrophic damage will occur and a high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will also happen in isolated areas. This being a Category 5 Hurricane was able to last for a long time and was felt as far south as Panama and eventually hit as far north as Florida. Honduras The first country Hurricane Mitch made landfall with was Honduras and subsequently it was also the one that took the greatest amount of damage. It was so large and devastating that it had reached just about the whole population while it hovered over the country for days. While it slowly hovered over Honduras it had dumped torrential ... • 4. Art Analysis: The Above Image By El Greco The above image is a painting created by Spanish–Greek artist El Greco around 1570. It depicts a story from the Bible (variants of which exists in several of the Gospels, including John 9, Mark 8:22–25, and Luke 18:35) in which Jesus heals "a man blind from birth" (John 9:1). According to the Metropolitan Museum website, the man and woman in the central foreground of the painting are likely the blind man's parents. This means this painting probably depicts the John 9 story, as that is the only one of Jesus' blind–healing miracles that refers to the blind man's parents. It is also the only instance of the blind miracle story that involves the Pharisees. In any case, it is a powerful and meaningful depiction of one of the many miracles of Jesus, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Borg's words compassion is necessary because "growth in compassion is the sign of growth in the life of the Spirit" (61). El Greco's piece is clearly illustrative of Jesus' system of compassion, and portrays Jesus as a compassionate and empathetic friend, an understanding I have had of him my entire life. And, as implied in this painting, Jesus occupies a purer and justified position with his subversive wisdom, contrary to what the Pharisees and legislators at the time believed. Jesus is one who believes that compassionate works should occur all the time, and at any time, regardless of the Sabbath, and regardless of who needs the help. At the same time, compassion in good works is just as necessary as the work itself; Jesus demonstrates his compassion by holding the man's hand. This lends him and his system a far more accessible and inviting aura than the harsh repressions that Pharisees of the purity system upheld. Ultimately, though, those repressions and regulations are meaningless and insubstantial systems of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Painting : The View Of Toledo By El Greco View of Toledo is an artwork by El Greco dated to 1599–1600. The painting's present location is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is a large oil painting 47 3/4 x 42 3/4 in. El Greco depicts landscape of the city Toledo, where he lived for a long period of his life. The artist faithfully depicted real architecture of Toledo, however he rearranged some buildings, e. g. moving cathedral next to the royal palace. The View of Toledo wasn't meant to be an accurate geographical description, but emblematic view of the city. Though the artwork can be classified as genre painting, the artist could transform steady terrain view into organic landscape. By using carefully organized composition and lively brushstrokes, El Greco masterly conveyed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Defined texture of some areas of the painting gives an idea about how El Greco was "molding" the View of Toledo. The trees at the bottom and the sky are painted with long flowing brushstrokes, hills on the left side have fluid–like surface, hills on the horizon are done with short and sharp brushstrokes. We can follow the artist's brush and create painting together with him. This visible movement of artist's hand introduces dynamism to the entire composition. Together intensity of the color and readable artist's hand turn ordinary view into energetic landscape. The painting can be divided into two parts: land at the bottom and sky on top. Noticeably, sky takes almost a half of the painting. It suggests importance of this element for the entire composition. Indeed El Greco's depiction of a heaven is very ... • 6. What Are The Similarities Between Mannerism And Realism Mannerism and Realism are two periods in the history of art that did not born by themselves but were part of a greater movement or originate because they do not accept the convention of the previous movement. In these essay the main artists from these two movement will be compared in order to show how art has changed over three centuries of world changes. The first artist that will be analyzed is El Greco from Mannerism and the second one is Gustave Courbet, a representative of Realism. An interesting fact about these two artist is that even though they lived in different epochs they have chosen the same theme for one of their paintings and this allows to a more detailed comparison in order to see how the historical context and the movements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... El Greco was fascinated by the Italian Reinassance and by Mannerism, he uses art to express his religious fervor and devotion in paintings like "Burial of Count Orgaz" instead Courbet is living in a period of political instabily and fights for the civil rights so he found himself closer to Realism, an art movement that express these values and produce his masterpiece "Burial at Ornans" to show that common people have the same dignity and were not inferior to other social classes such as aristocracy and that art should focus more on the depiction of the common. The transition from what is pleasant and idealized to what is its opposite is abrupt and not gradual and it is caused by political events like the French reovolution where the painters, spokesman of the society along with writers, refused to represent what is good to be seen but the reality that still should be valued and this is why the Burial at Ornans had become more popular and appreciated over time even though at the beginning it was highly criticized instead The Burial of Count Orgaz can be clearly put in the category of religious art in this case intepreted according to the Mannerist convections. However nothing is removed to the creativity of these two artist that have interpreted the same theme to reach two completely different results that will remain unique in art ... Our Moving Fate: A Study of El Greco's Assumption of the Virgin El Greco painted his "Assumption of the Virgin" in 1577 for the convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, Spain. Born in Greece as Domenikos Theotocopoulos, (his nickname translates from Spanish into "The Greek"), El Greco was the top artist of the Spanish School, and was commissioned to paint "Assumption" to adorn the convent's altar. The painting is a daunting size–over six feet wide and twice as tall–surrounded by a wooden frame tinted with a non–uniform metallic gold paint. The oil on canvas creates some, although not obvious texture, and brush strokes are visible only slightly in the garments of the human subjects. The Virgin Mary is the main figure in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An in–depth study reveals mankind's literal presentation of Mary to God for appraisal and judgment, rather than a simple depiction of her journey upward. The painting illustrates man's–not God's–physical act of lifting Mary up, creating a truly dynamic canvas. To do all of this, El Greco uses strong geometric divisions and hidden lines to take control of the viewer's eyes, and sly manipulations of gravity and forces to create an image truly in motion. In the end, El Greco uses the painting's overwhelming size and orientation to alter perspective and succeeds in tying the viewer's fate into the scene itself. The initial focus of the painting is Mary as a whole, or perhaps specifically her face and outstretched arms. El Greco, however, uses a Cartesian grid to relocate the focus to the geometric center of the canvas, a clearly intentional move necessary to create the basis of Mary's upward motion. "Assumption" is strongly divided into four quadrants. The heavens, occupying the upper–half of the canvas, are divided in half vertically by Mary's body, while the Earth is split by a clear part in the crowd that extends directly downward from that same line. The divine and mortal realms are separated fittingly by a line of clouds vertically centered on the canvas. The result is a crosshairs locked in on the area just below the Virgin's feet–the area that will become the most important part of the canvas. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Pieta Essay El Greco ("The Greek"), also known as Domenicos Theotocopulos, was a painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. El Greco was born in Crete in 1541, which was then a part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post–Byzantine art. He had trained and become a master within that tradition and an icon painter. Among his great artworks, I would like to draw attention to "PietГ (The Lamentation of Christ)", an oil painting. El Greco had painted this masterpiece about c.1565–70 in Italy, during the Cretan period. El Greco, at the age of 26, like other Greek artists had travelled to Venice and came under the influence of Titian and Tintoretto. During his stay in Italy, he widened his style with aspects of Mannerism and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a scene which is shown after Jesus was crucified, where his body has been removed from the cross and his friends and family mourn over his body. Many artists have focused this scene by just painting four people: the body of Christ, His mother, SaintMary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea. El Greco's Lamentation of Christ is "a translation in paint of Michelangelo's late sculptured group of the PietГ in Florence Cathedral, at the time in Rome. The pattern and the feeling are the same. The figures of the Dead Christ, His Mother, Saint Mary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea make one compact group. Michelangelo achieved this by his new treatment of form; El Greco by paint, by employing broader, more continuous passages of color. The more vivid colors of Rome combine with the richer palette of Venice to convey the intensity of expression demanded by the subject. The horizontal composition of Venice, more suited to a narrative type of subject than to the single image, is given up and is only very rarely found appropriate in Spain. Michelangelo's PietГ group was not the only source on which El Greco drew: the arrangement of Christ's legs and his outspread arms, no less than the idea of viewing one of the two bearers of his body from the side and the other from behind, derive from Michelangelo's drawing for Vittoria Colonna, in which, as in El Greco's painting, the Virgin is placed behind and above Christ." • 9. The Assumption of the Virgin The painting "The Assumption of the Virgin" has a mannerism influence. Mannerism was a XVI century art style influenced by, and at the same time a reaction to, the harmonious ideals of the Italian High Renaissance. Mannerism is notable for its artificial ( as opposed to naturalistic ) qualities which favor compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier Renaissance painting. Veneration was not idolatrous because it was referred to the prototype represented in the image. Among the saints, the Virgin has a primordial place because she is the Mother of God and the the prime intercessor between Man and Christ. Since the Virgin's role had been denied by the Protestants, the Catholic Church responded by emphasizing her special status. In the Assumption of the Virgin", the Virgin is assumed to ascend to Heaven with her body preserved from corruption as a reward for her faith and good works. Another determining factor in evaluating a painting's context is patronage and, in XVI century Spain, this was largely either religious or monarquic. The monarquic alliance with the Catholic faith was a salient feature of the Spanish court and, in particular, in the kingdom of Philip II. To understand why El Greco ( which means "the Greek" since he came from Crete ) found his way to Toledo, Spain in 1577, after studying painting in Venice and Rome, it is essential to realize that Spain, at the time, offered great opportunities for artists, largely because of the patronage of king Philip II. Through a coordinated media campaign focussed on clarifying the role of ARENA in the beginnings of the civil war, we've been able to secure a small but consistent advantage over our FMLN opponents. However, according to the research that my team and I have conducted, this advantage is very fragile. While El Salvadoran voters have communicated to us that they do not blame ARENA for the start of the conflict, there is more confusion about the role of the party during the height of the war in the 1980s. Therefore, this memo will be divided into three parts: first, a surface–level history of the conflict through the 1980s; second, potential academic explanations for... MagaГ±a's Presidency took an active and purposeful role in opposing the FMLN guerrillas through attacks on the group's primarily peasant base and support network. From 1981 to 1983, it is estimated that at least 18,000 civilians were killed by government forces. Many of these deaths were the result of air force bombings of peasants trying to flee across the Honduras border or massacres committed by government infantry groups against FMLN friendly villages such as El Mozote in December 1981. Paramilitary death squads were also incredibly active during this time period, at one point killing six members of the opposition Christian Democratic Party (PDC), resulting in a condemnation of the MagaГ±a government by PDC leader JosГ© NapoleГіn Duarte. The second phase of the conflict, following the election of Duarte and the PDC in the 1984–5 elections, resulted in a reduction in government violence against civilians and attempts, although ultimately unsuccessful, to reach a peace between the FMLN and government. The US–backed Duarte, who defeated ARENA leader Roberto d'Aubuisson amid allegations of electoral fraud, became the first civilian President in forty years. • 14. Free Candide Essays : Man 's Purpose Man's Purpose in Candide One of the main purposes of the Enlightenment was to promote reason and rationalism as a way to improve society and politics. However, Voltaire, an influential and famous philosopher and writer during the period of the enlightenment, repeatedly criticized certain aspects of Enlightenment philosophy. In his short story,Candide, Voltairesomewhat harshly attacks the optimism that was so popular between philosophers during this time and instead he decides not to disregard the inescapable presence of the evil that is in nature and humans. In this piece of literature, the protagonist of the story, Candide, experiences extreme changes in his reason and maturity. By the end of Candide's topographical and philosophical journey, it is evident that Voltaire wanted to emphasize that man's purpose in the world is not just to simply think about what philosophy is. Instead, Voltaire stresses that man should be an active member of a society that is more realistic and that is better suited for him in his variation of beliefs inside a physical and psychological state. It is very clear in the beginning of the story that Voltaire desires to demonstrate both material and mental independence within the individual, which is a job that can typically be accomplished through travel. The story is completely built on a lively and difficult journey that is undertaken by Candide, as well as other characters in the story that are very close to him. As the story continues, ... Picasso's painting entitled "Standing Figure" depicts a nude woman with her arms crossed behind her head. It was painted in 1908 during a key period of invention and experimentation, as Picasso began to construct his paintings in a new way. The figure is translated into simplified, geometric forms, reflecting Picasso's interest in the art of Africa and Oceania. Using only a few colors, he focuses the viewer's attention on the intersection of these geometric forms. It seems as though Picasso uses the blue lines in this painting like some sort of directional device, drawing attention to the outline of the woman's figure. As we discussed in class, the style of cubism uses multiple or contrasting vantage points. Another element of cubism is simplifying more complicated scenes into geometric forms. Cubism rejected the inherited concept that art should copy nature, or that they should adopt the traditional techniques of perspective, modeling, and foreshortening. They wanted instead to emphasize the two–dimensionality of the canvas. Turner's "Fall of the Rhine at Schaffhausen", painted between 1805 and 1806, creates a sense of panic for the viewer. The Oligarchy's lack of consistency in implementing and following through with reforms has prevented progress from occurring in the country. Furthermore, the many wars and political revolts in El Salvador impeded its economic and social growth. The main focus of the Oligarchy was to turn a profit. Because the Oligarchy viewed the Indians as disposable labor, they did not feel the need to treat them to prevent their numbers from dwindling. Instead, the Spanish replaced them with slaves imported from Africa (Montgomery 71). This was one of the first signs of inequality brought to El Salvador by the Oligarchy. In the seventeenth century, the demand for cacao dropped. As a result of this, El Salvador plunged into an economic depression, and the Oligarchy had to find a new source of revenue, which they found in indigo (Montgomery 71). Indigo was profitable because of the increase in demand for textiles in Europe at this time (Krauss 59–60). This led the Oligarchy to increase its acquisition of land in El Salvador, which was mainly inhabited by the native Indians. On top of being extremely lucrative, indigo was far less labor–intensive than cacao was, so it became the main focus of El Salvador's agriculture by 1600 (Montgomery 71). Unfortunately, these developments had high costs for the Indian populations. When the indigo rotted, diseases would be brought to the Indian villages that cultivated it, killing off entire villages in several instances. When this happened, they were merely replaced by another tribe (Krauss 60). Eventually the mistreatment of the Indians by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Implications Of The El Greco Fallacy : Perceptions And... The research conducted in the "top–down" effects in perception research was guided by the El Greco fallacy. Here, it is brought to the attention of findings that distortions must have any alternative explanation besides a literal perceptual distortion. Researchers applied this theory because of the fact that distortions must cancel each other out, since the means of reproduction should be distorted as was the stimulus being reproduced. In their research, authors asked if higher–level states such as moods, action capabilities, and knowledge are truly effects on perception, or if subjects reflect influences on memory or bias. The key question attempting to be answered here is, what determines how things look? After experiment 1 results confirm that holding a rod decreases subjects' perception of aperture width estimates, in experiment 2 researchers ask if this confirmation reflect literal perceptual compression of the apertures. Experiment 3 asks what explains aperture–compression effects. Researchers hypothesize that the aperture–width effects should disappear once the subjects think the rod is being held for a purpose other than for "balance". For experiment 4, researchers ask if reflecting on unethical deeds from subject's past will estimate a low brightness of room. The question that guided the research in experiment 5, which applied the El Greco fallacy, is, is the effect of ethical reports on lightness judgments actually perceptual? Picasso And Pablo Picasso's The Old Guitarist Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, it is our thoughts, emotions, and a personal journal that occasionally comes easier way to communicate what's inside of the mind. One of Pablo Picasso's most famous artworks and still known worldwide is The Old Guitarist. Picasso painted this piece of art in the Blue Period that ran from 1901–04. This specific year is important because the Blue Period of Picasso is when he started painting in the gloomy shades of blue and blueish–green inspired by Picasso's own emotional turmoil and financial struggle. I would say it was the year where his emotions took over instead of his own hands, which drove him to the highest limit of creating something impressive. Nonetheless,... On top of that, Picasso had the downside of losing a faithful friend, Carlos Casagemas. The use of the gloomy shade of blue and blueish–green was the only way of verbalizing his emotions. We see these colors throughout the entire portraits except when he stirred and added a brown color to the guitar. The brown guitar was an evasion from the harsh reality he was going through. The United States seen this as a rebellion against their own Government and didn 't support ideas of the FMLN, so they interfered with the revolution. The United States backed up the military leader that was in charge of El Salvador, Carlos Humberto Romero Mena to stand up against the FMLN revolutionary group. After 12 years of the war between the El Salvador army and the FMLN, the peace agreements were signed, and the FMLN group won. They later formed into a political party. So the United States interfered with a war that was bound to happen, which was going to have the same outcome no matter what. With the interference of the United States, they prolonged a quick, short war and made it last 12 years. Many lives that shouldn 't have been taken were taken due to the action of the interference of the United States. Others might argue to say that, No the United States intervention was the right thing to do, since if they didn 't interfere, the FMLN group would continue to spread the ideas of Communism throughout the whole world without any limit on them. And with the United States intervention, this created a limiter and brought truth to the FMLN group that trying to make every human have the same ideas is not that simple to do, and not everyone will listen to those ideas. The United States of America foreign policy on El Salvador is best explained by President Obama's approach on Latin America where the United States is focused on economic growth and equality, energy and climate control, and regional and citizen security (Foreign Policy, 2012). This is best explained using the international level of analysis and neo–liberalism where the global structure and economic interdependence provides the foundation of America's foreign policy. Soon after the territory was conquered by Spanish rule in 1524 and ruled by King Charles I of Spain until their independence in 1838 (Background, 2012). The Role of Romero vs. the Catholic Church: The Salvadoran Civil War The tragedies of the civil war in El Salvador brought focus to the many issues of oppression, under–representation, and inequality apparent amongst the Salvadoran working class during the later twentieth century. The outbreak of the war began much like civil wars in neighboring countries, consisting of the lower class demanding land and policy reformations, as elites feared the uprisings would result in socialist–geared politics that jeopardized their status. Amidst the fighting between the two social classes, the Catholic Church, as a whole, maintained a somewhat neutrality status and refused to publically support one group over the other. Brett argues that Romero had a very "prophetic approach [that] was a highly effective method of leadership during his three–year tenure of office" (Brett 717). He uses the term "prophetic" to refer to the similar ways in which Romero preached his sermons to the underprivileged campesinos in order to also publically represent them, much like Jesus preached to the poor to represent the persecuted Christians. However, the term itself can be problematic because also like Jesus, Romero was tormented by his fellow bishops for catering to the needs of the poor. Not all bishops and clergymen at the time had captured the essence of liberation theology teachings and feared they were too radical to preach to the campesinos. However, Romero believed that the equality of Salvadorans was more important than their integration into the elite society. He focused many of his preachings on the need to put an end to violence and determine a right from wrong. In Romero's last sermon, just before "he called for soldiers to refuse to obey orders," (Wood 27) he gave special attention to the need to reinstall distinct human rights within a country in "its own exodus" (Romero 3) and that both groups alike should call for, "respect for the dignity of the person, hope for humanity's common good, and the transcendence that look before all to God and only ... Descriptive Essay About Pablo Picasso Shocking my oversized three–dollar boots with the recently damp medieval floor, I could hear the high–pitched clapper from the closest cathedral warning us:we were late.
