Objectives and pretended products
Objectives:
With this project we pretend:
To introduce students to the use of ITC
To promote respect for other cultures
To encourage intercultural understanding and respect
To encourage the development of collaborative work habits
Students will understand that healthy habits help us to be healthy.
To help students to use English phrases and expressions.
All these goals are going to be achieved using the PBL methodology. We will give
priority to cooperative learning in which students will get to conclusions starting from
their own interests.
Products:
Qr code lector (to read the first message our Super HealthyEROES team is leaving),
Thinglink (to create an interactive image),
iMovie (to create a movie where children show partners different games or sports),
Google photos (to create a common photo- album),
Voki (to create an avatar who represents children tobe one of the Super
HealthyEROES.)
2. Process and activities
Unit 1 Project Presentation and Food Unit (from September toDecember)
I) At the beginning of the Project: We are the Super HealthyEROES, so we will start
with some outreach activities and some motivating activities. Students will receive in
their classes a secret message hidden in a QR code; they will decipher the message
using Qrafter (or any other QR reader), a tool installed on the iPad (or in any other
device) we have in the classroom. Thanks to this activity we will be able to grab their
attention and interest. The message has been sent by the Super HealthyEROES team
and it will let them know who they are and what they have come for, giving children
some clues to achieve a very healthy living so that each child can be one more in that
Healthy team. Our team´s goal is to build a much healthier Europe.
We will start with a Thinking Routine, "Brainstorming", so students will say aloud their
ideas to build this healthier Europe. We will collect their ideas and after that, we will
conclude: What should we eat to be healthier? Which kind of activities should we
develop? Is the hygiene important for our body? From now on these will be the
contents we are going to work with: food, sports/games, and hygiene/body.
But, to be one more in the Super HealthyEROES Teamwe must have someone who
represents us all; using the thinking routine “I see, I think, I wonder”, they conclude
that we are going to create a Super HealthyEROE.
Activity 1 We arrange the children into groups of three or four (depending on their
age), each small group will create an avatar (using Voki or another tool) who will
represent them on this journey and who will be a member of the Super HealthyEROES
team.
Students in small groups will decide who the delegate of each group will be; that
delegate will be in charge of the iPad and he/she will represent his/her group during
the activity (this role will be on rotation for coming activities).
II) After evaluating the first activity (create an avatar) we will remember the contents
to be learnt: food, games/sports and hygiene.
Start with activity 2.
Through a message sent by mail to the students the characters of our project are
encouraging children to achieve their Logo.
In this Logo there are three stars and each one represents one content. One star for
food content, another star for sports/games content and a third star for hygiene
content. To win the whole Logo children must get them one by one by doing different
activities.
So to get the first star related to food, children will reach to the conclusion that they
can make together with their partners an interactive image of a food pyramid. The
different foods that will appear in the pyramid will be pictures that students will shoot
3. and edit working in cooperative groups.
Firstly, we encourage children to learn which different foods we can consume. After
that, using a thinking routine, they can get to the conclusion that if we have a food
pyramid at hand it can help us to maintain a balanced diet so… why not? Let’s make
one with all the partners in the project!!!
Then we arrange children in cooperative groups where they are going to search
different images of a food pyramid.
Each group will show their colleagues their image, so that they can choose which one
they like most.
Using Padlet each group will explain to their European partners why others should
choose their image. Not only will they use English to do so, but they also can defend
their selection giving different explanations.
We are doing the same in every single school so each students group will present an
image, all the food pyramid images will be on the blog so that we (parents and
teachers included) can vote which image can be the one that we all are using as
background image of our Thinglink.
One of the founders of the project will create an open Thinglink, and the background
image will be the selected image.
Using simple phrases such as: I like…, I rather… students in cooperative learning
groups will choose a food for a level on the pyramid.
Each small group will:
1. Take a picture of a food (families can take part in this activity, and they will be
informed by mail)
2. Open the Thinglink helped by the teacher.
3. Write the name of the food.
4. Tape the name of the food.
When every group has finished its work the result will be a food pyramid created by all
the partners in the project.
At the end of the process it will appear in the classrooms a big star with the
inscripction “Eat well”.
Unit 2 Sports and games (from January to March)
III) After finding the Star (related to Food) in the classroom, students will be
encouraged to keep on working and learning.
Activity 3
Students will be asked about how to get the next star from the Super HealthyEROES’
Logo.
Which will be the next star we have to achieve? We will remind them the message
from the SH: “Eat well, EXERCISE, and keep your body clean” (we will see them and
listen to their message again)
Using a thinking routine “I see- I think- I wonder” in small groups, we will know how
much do they know about Exercise.
Students will mention different ways to exercise.
4. Going back to the circle (big group) again the delegate will explain to his/her partners
their conclusions.
Those sports/games will be practiced in the Psychomotor activity classroom.
After that, back to the circle the children will choose their favorite.
We will prepare a chat session, some questions and answers for our European
partners, in order to explain how to win the second star. Those could be the following:
1. Greetings
2. Do you like to play?
3. Which game do you play?
4. Shall we show you how to play?
When we ask: “shall we show you how to play?” we will answer “Yes”. Now the pupils
will be encouraged to prepare a game (previously voted in the circle time) for their
European partners to see.
After finishing the chat, all the partners will begin filming using iMovie app (or any
other similar tool) and showing the chosen game.
Students will be arranged in groups so that while one group represents how to play
the game (using simple sentences prepared by the teacher), another group will tape it,
a third group will edit the video and finally, the fourth group will send it by email.
NOTE: When using iMovie, among the options to edit it we will choose “Project”. By
doing so, we will allow our European partners to edit the video again and insert their
part of the film.
Once all the European partners have added their game onto the video, the result will
be a film entitled “Let’s play with us”, made and edited by our pupils and their
European partners. As in the previous activity, the SH will give them a star with the
inscription “Exercise”.
Unit 3 Body and hygiene (from April to June)
IV) Founding the star of Exercise will encourage children to keep working and learning.
Activity 4
During the circle time we will ask students: “Which star is the last one we need?”
reminding the Super HealthyEROES’ message “Eat well, exercise and you’re your body
clean” so that students relate the third star to the message: EAT WELL.
Using a thinking routine “what do I know? And what do I want to know?” we can more
or less know about students’ knowledge about body and which their expectations for
this topic are. (Those aspects can be used as criteria that we can take into account
during a coming evaluation, if they get to know what they previously wanted to know).
We even make the most of the Psychomotor activity sessions by interpreting the song
“open shut them” children will practice some movements related to body.
In small groups, students will vote for a part of the body about which they will have to
investigate.
Parents, previously informed by mail, will help students find information about their
corresponding part of the body.
So each group will get information in English about its corresponding part the body:
a) name
5. b) how to get in clean
c) What can happen if we don’t wash it properly?
In the circle time, each small group will outline some data about their investigations.
Using videoconference we can make an agreement with our European partners to
make a collaborative photo album among all the partners in the Project.
We can previously prepare more or less the conversation:
1. Greetings
2. We know how to keep our body clean!
3. Do you want to make a picture-book?
4. Yes!!!
5. Goodbyes
In the circle time we are singing and dancing the song “this is the way I wash my …
(part of the body)”, using images where children can see that this song is related to
hygiene.
Students back to small groups will arrange as follows:
a) One student will take a picture
b) Another student (who will be washing the corresponding part of the body) will
pose for the picture
c) The other colleagues in the small group will edit the picture writing on it the
sentence of the song ( so for example: if it is the nose that they are shooting they
should write “this is the way I blow my nose”
We are going to use Google photos tool and we are creating a collaborative album, the
final product will be a photo album edited by every single partner in the Project.
At the end of the activity when students get in the classroom they will find a third star
with the inscription “Keep your body clean”
Through a videoconference students and European partners will talk about the third
star.
The collaborative album can be printed to be used in future occasions as school
material to work vocabulary and expressions about body and hygiene. We can leave it
in the school library.
V) We are going to finish the whole process with Activity 5
Taking into account students’ efforts and implication we are giving them the
opportunity to draw the Super HealthyEROES’ Logo. After that they will vote which
one they like most.
The chosen Logo will be printed in some T-shirts that we later will send to our
European partners by ordinary mail. Teacher will help children write some messages
for their partners.
So, at the end, each student will get a T-shirt with a printed Logo. This will be the prize
for a very well done work.
After that students will take pictures and videos of their groups with their T-shirts
which will be shared through social networks and blog.
Assessment
6. Students will achieve or develop every proposed goal and we will continuously assess
them using observation and a rubric which students will know about and where
indicators such as the following will be specified:
. He/she uses the camera/video- camera
. He/she knows how to use every single used TIC- tool
. He/she recognizes which steps he/she has to follow to have a conversation through
Twinspace.
. He/she names some learned games.
. He/she names one or more of the countries that collaborate in the project and is able
to mark it/them in a world map.
. He/she takes part in all the learning groups, big and small.
. He/she gives his/her own ideas to every discussion.
. He/she accepts when has not got the leader role in the working group.
. He/she helps with a good attitude.
. He/she easily uses some phrases.
. He/she has internalised most of the contents of the project related to food, games,
hygiene and body.
At the same time, the project itself will be continuously evaluated, through
observation of the following:
. If most of the students achieve the proposed goals.
. If the schedule is appropriate.
. Students' level of satisfaction.
. If communication and coordination with all collaborating schools is appropriate.
. If every activity is carried out properly.
