Ethical Issues In Forensic Psychology
What are the potential ethical issues raised in this scenario? Be sure to support your response with
the appropriate ethical guidelines from the APA's Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of
Conduct and Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology. What action would you take and why?
Be sure to describe your process of ethical decision making.
Given the scenario, there are different ethical issues which might arise. For example, given that the
mental health professional has been retired for ten years, it begs the question of if she is still
licensed to practice. There would be no problem if the mental health professional were licensed, but
it would be unethical and unlawful for the professional to carry out any specialized psychosomatic
work. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is given that she was asked by her husband's boss to conduct a custody evaluation. That would
result in ethical issues relating to multiple relationships. According to APA (2004), "standard 3.05
recognizes that psychologists are sometimes required to serve in more than one role in judicial or
administrative proceedings, and so cannot always avoid or fully resolve a potentially harmful
multiple relationship." A multiple relationship occurs when a psychologist is in a professional role
with a person and "at the same time is in another role with the same person, at the same time is in a
relationship with a person closely associated with or related to the person with whom the
psychologist has the professional relationship." (Dr. Stephen Behnke, 2008). The relationship
exhibited by the mental health professional poses a conflict of interest as described in ethical
standard 3.06 Conflict of Interest. The relationship between the husband and the boss would be
affected if the professional did not accomplish the task according to the husband's boss

The Mission Of The American Counseling Association ( Aca )
The mission of the American Counseling Association (ACA) According to the Counseling.org
website, the ACA's mission is to "enhance the quality of life in society by promoting the
development of professional counselors, advancing the counseling profession, and using the
profession and practice of counseling to promote respect for human dignity and diversity". I
interpret this as a wide array of assurances, through continuing education and enlightenment of
counselors, and then the quality of services is improved upon by dedication. The ACA started out as
the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), and it originated because so many
professional counselors were dissatisfied that they did not fit to the subscription of contemporary
styles of mental health professionals (Palmo, Weikel & Borsos, 2006). The advancement of the
counseling profession began when the term professional counselor was recognized as a profession.
It continues to grow through research and theory developments that have proven to positively
impact the lives of the client professional counselors see. How the ACA defines professional
counseling The ACA defines professional counseling as a "professional relationship that empowers
diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and
career goals" (ACA, 2010). This is not the first recognized definition of professional counseling;
however, as I understand it in its current state, this is a relationship

Substance Abuse Personal Statement
I have recently graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a
minor in Addictive Disorders and Recovery Studies. I have also recently been accepted to
University of Houston – Clear Lake's Clinical Psychology Master's program. My main areas of
interest are mental health issues and substance abuse issues. Therefore, my educational and career
goal is to be able to help people with these types of issues. The comorbidity of drug addiction and
other mental disorders has been a primary research topic for decades in the psychology community.
This trend is evident by the plethora of studies conducted regarding a variety of combinations of
substance addictions and mental disorders. I believe that being able to find so many scholarly
resources is extremely encouraging to novices in the field, such as myself, because it inspires them
to learn more about and conduct more research on this topic. ... Show more content on

For example, studies are frequently restricted to alcoholism as the "drug" due to the legal
complications involving other drugs. The legal status of several other drugs, such as heroin and
meth, make it difficult to study the mental health of those who are addicted to such substances. Also,
the stigmas that people who are addicted to drugs, as well as people who suffer from mental
disorders, face is excruciatingly crippling to the field of research. Due to current stigmas, a meth
addict with schizophrenia is not going to want to seek help for their own issues let alone participate

Mental Health Professionals: A Case Study
Mental healthcare professionals need to uphold their responsibilities to tell the truth, respect
confidentiality, function as an advocate, and accept accountability for providing proper mental
health care to their patients. If I were to have a mental health professional tell me that my depression
would go away on its own and break confidentiality by telling the receptionist about my problems. I
would not trust them and I might even hate them as my depression got worse. If a mental health
professional were to lie to a patient, like the example, that patient would tell their friends what had
happened. No one would be able to trust that professional. The mental health professional would
lose their license because they broke HIPPA regulations

Safeguarding Assessment Essay
My Line Manager and I both reflected on our concerns and analysed what we felt about the situation
and agreed these concerns needed to be raised immediately with 2's Care Co–ordinator. Once I
contacted the Care Co–ordinator we reviewed again the circumstances around 2's vulnerabilities. I
wanted to ensure that I had made both my line manager and the Care Co–ordinator aware of the
factual information I had been given whilst also seeking a multi–discipline professional judgment
on what was the best course of action to take. This would also help me evaluate and analyse 2's

to make a further assessment. Following this an Initial Strategy Meeting was arranged under the All
Wales Policy and Procedures for the Protection of Vulnerable Adults. The meeting consisted of a
multi–disciplinary team who worked with 2. We were all able to assess 2's current circumstances
such as his home environment, current mental health state and the support 2 already receives. The
outcome of the meeting was concluded that 2 has the capacity to be able to say no to the alleged
people who were harassing him for money and report any such harassment to the Police. An action
plan was devised where each professional would have a responsibility to help support 2 to stop
giving his money away or to report harassment to the Police. The referral was closed on the basis
that the professionals involved would follow through with the action plan. For me and my team we
were to continue to monitor and review 2's behavior and encourage 2 to approach staff or contact
the Police if he ever feels threatened or vulnerable towards others. In some respect I appreciate that
the multi–agency team have assessed the information they have received and concluded that 2 does

Mental Health Professionals: A Documentary Analysis
The world is comprised of sophisticated, complex and interconnected networks, managing the
dynamical world we live in today. In my SMC 4301 Capstone course our instructor encourages to
consider individuals participation in 4 different ways–the meaning of information as a concept, the
nature occupation and professions, the politics and impact of climate change and the exploration of
the nature of systems and complexity–to obtain a better understanding of the world from a micro
and macro view. With so much going on around the world, how did we come to know anything
about nature's patterns and spontaneity? Across the globe, information is transmitted and published
in newspapers, books, websites and more keeping the public up to date on current findings. One
benefit that we see with information transmission ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Professions and occupations of early civilizations were and still are related to natural resources.
However, modern professions focus on the importance of mental health as well. Professions such as
engineering, science, psychology and environmental science are all major contributors to the current
understanding we have of the world from predicting weather to the discovery of a new disorder. In
the documentary, "Web of Hate" delves into the teenage dependency on social networks and its
daunting consequence of developing depression and anxiety through cyber bullying. Child
psychologist Michael Carr–Gregg states that "the pervasive nature of the internet means cyber
bullying can have a devastating psychological impact on young people." Is his judgment accurate? It
seems that way, considering that some cases of cyber bullying results in suicide. How is it that Dr.
Carr–Gregg came to acknowledge this way of life? It could be because his "training... led to some

chapter 3 of Ronald J. Comer's book, Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology, it explains and
defines the importance of the assessment of a client. Along with other topics, it explains many
factors and objectives of diagnosis and treatment of clients. The first topic is the importance and
purpose of psychological assessment. In order to know what the client is going through, the
clinician must know background information of the client. This includes knowing past significant
events, discovering who the client, as a person, is, the client's thoughts, daily life and symptoms that
the client is feeling. The clinician uses all of this information, in ... Show more content on

An example of this would be a standard set of questions that can be used for everyone. To help the
psychological assessment of people, there are also clinical tests, which differ from clinical
interviews. Clinical tests are used for obtaining information about the way a person is thinking and
about that person's psychological operationing. The main difference between the clinical test and
interview is that the clinical test involves finding information about deeper topics of the client's
psychological process. Whereas, in a clinical interview, clinicians may find information about a
client, but not as in depth as if they were tested. Within clinical testing, there are 6 kinds of tests, but
3 are commonly used. These 3 tests are known as projective tests, personal inventories and
neuropsychological tests. Projective tests can be described as tests given to clients that require them
to interpret certain motives. It helps clinicians find out about the client's unconscious motives and if
there are any conflicting emotions within that client. Examples of these projective tests are the
Rorschach test, the Thematic Apperception test, sentence–completion test and lastly, drawing.
Personal inventories asks clients different questions about themselves and their behaviors, feelings,
emotions and beliefs. This is used to measure deep and expansive characteristics of personality. An
example of this is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory

Mental Health Professional With Multiple Years
This paper is an overview of mental health professional with several years' experience to be a
consultant to a local district superintendent. Based on information gather from a phone call from the
superintendent regarding three students and a teacher that was severely stabbed by a student. This
has been in the media for about two weeks. During this time, the superintendent has been receiving
complaints from people in the community, parents and teacher stating that security measures are not
adequate and that discipline for the student are lax. My responsibility as a MHP consultant is to
develop a plan of action, intervention and my recommendation to the superintendent. To help
improve communication within the community about the school, student, teachers and administrate
staffs. I. Myrick's Approach and Egin Model II. My reason for choosing this model based on the
information I received from the superintendent. About the Myrick's approach (1) identify the
problems clearly, (2) clarify the situation, (3) determine the desired outcome, (4) gather any needed
information, (5) develop a plan of action, and (6) evaluate and revise as needed. The Egin model I
would ask (1) what would you like to discuss, (2) What you want to do about it and, (3) How do we
get there? As a MHP consultant, I will gather information this will include any data I can find
regarding information about the school history regarding discipline. I will also conduct interview

Roles And Mission Of The Counselor
Roles and Mission The counselor may play various roles, at several levels, i.e. the counselor may be
an educator to the client, the counselor may be a type of mentor offering advice and guidance on
specific issues, and also engage in other roles. The counselor may also act as an advocate for a client
whose cultural background is significantly different than the environment he or she may currently
be in, by ensuring that the client is treated with the same respect and given the same opportunities as
others. The client's social and cultural context is significant because it reveals to the counselor who
the client is, where the client is from, the traditions and values of the client, among many other
things. With this knowledge of the client, the counselor is able to obtain specialized interventions
which will assist them with the issues they are encountering therefore their situations and
themselves can improve. An advocate is an individual who acts as intermediary to foster change to
unlimited access, enhance awareness to inequalities, and promote accountability on the individual,
communal, and statewide level. Within the counseling field, most counselors, although they may not
be aware, act as social justice advocates on the behalf of their clients when linking or representing
the client in different settings. In the article titled, Relationship Between a Belief in a Just World and
Social Justice Advocacy Attitudes of School Counselors, the authors suggests that "... school

Therapeutic Relationship : Mental Health Professionals
To establish therapeutic relationship
The key to dealing with our client Ben who has a psychosis condition is to establish a therapeutic
relationship. This includes active listening, learning and act on the information has been
communicated with Ben about what is important to him. Active listening involves asking
appropriate questions, pay attention, paraphrasing, offer appropriate response to his emotions and
showing interest in what he is saying.
Ishii argue that patient centered care is the background of shared decision making. (Ishii et al.,

Ensure Ben is informed about his care and management
Ben must be adequately informed, so that he can provide informed consent to the nursing care.
Giving information is one of the first steps of therapeutic process (Goss & Moretti, 2011).
This is legally supported by the mental health act. According to s.11 of the Mental Health Act 2014
(Vic), a patient with mental illness must be involved in decisions about their treatment, and the
mental health nurse must respect his preferences. Therefore, the fact that Ben is a compulsory client
must not hinder his right to an informed consent. Hence, the nurse must ensure he has an
understanding about why he is on compulsory treatment (Lukens, Solomon, & Sorenson, 2013). The
nurse should ensure communication to know his opinion about the compulsory treatment, followed
by education and reassurance (Goss & Moretti, 2011).
Include family in the care
When caring for a compulsory client, involving the patient's family members is necessary. This may
improve Ben's compliance and enhance his involvement in the management, since this may
encourage him to share and seek information (Goss & Moretti, 2011). Ideally, the client's family
should be contacted as soon as possible after he has been put on compulsory treatment, to ensure
family participation (González–Blanch & Álvarez–Jiménez 2011).
Family members can play an essential role when using psychosocial

Mental and Human Health Service Professionals are people who work with individuals, families or
couples in assessing and treating mental health issues. They work with a variety of people of every
age and will also assist those with developmental disabilities, drug abuse, or some other

field are committed to helping others overcome their addiction while showing compassion for said
individuals and their craving. An Addiction Specialist has the ability to make about $39,000

professionals specialize in, but again, it has never fully interested me

Confidentiality In A Therapeutic Relationship
Confidentiality in a therapeutic relationship can be defined as any communication, diagnosis, or
treatment between a patient and a mental health professional. Confidentiality and trust are critical
components of a good therapeutic relationship therefore, it is imperative that mental health
professionals thoroughly explain the meaning of confidentiality and disclosure clauses to their
potential clients.
Mental health professionals are often faced with the decision of having to breach confidentiality.
Unfortunately, they sometimes struggle making this decision because they know breaking
confidentiality can be detrimental to a therapeutic relationship. In addition, it may come with ethical
and legal ramifications. Therefore it is highly recommended that mental professionals seek
consultation or legal advice before disclosing clients' information.
According to Texas State and Health Code, §611.002, a mental health professional mental health
professional must break confidentiality and disclosure when a client is believed to be a danger to
themselves or someone else, if child abuse or neglect is suspected the mental health professional
must report within 48 hours of first suspicion. According to the Texas Family Code, abuse is defined
very broadly in order to include the following; mental, emotional, sexual, physical, failure to
provide adequate shelter, food, or necessities.

Professional Identity In The Mental Health Field
What does it mean to have a professional identity? Many counselors struggle with finding their
identity in the field, and the process of learning about oneself can be demanding. Finding out where
a counselor fits within the helping profession has become an ongoing topic in the mental health
field. This process can take a long time for some counselors and becomes a process over time when
gaining an understanding of their own professional identity. Professional identity can be described
as one's perception of themselves along with the integration of skills and attitudes in the profession
(Gibson, Dollarhide, Moss, 2010). There are many professions in the mental health field that are
similar to counselors and the role can get confusing to some ... Show more content on

Having a purpose for one's profession brings meaning into their field (Dollarhide & Oliver, 2014).
By having a purpose allows one to reflect on why the entered their profession and thrive in an

the relationship a counselor has with their client. Being aware of who you are brings a new meaning
to professional identity. However, being able to find the meaning of professional identity has been

Mental Health Professional Goals
People in the mental health field risk stress when working with clients with various traumas daily. It
is important for counselors to practice self–care. I believe that self–care is the difference between
working in the mental health profession for one year and working in the profession for 25 years. By
learning and keeping track of my goals, not taking clients' emotional baggage home, and healthy

The Right Of Prescribe Medication For Psychologist Have...
The right to prescribe medication for psychologist have been a hot topic in the mental health field
and have been a major goal of the American Psychological Association. In fact, the American
Psychological Association have established many different training programs and legislations
towards achieving this goal. Today, the state of New Mexico, Louisiana, and Illinois are the three
states that have approved prescription rights for psychologist, with many other state have already
introduced similar legislation waiting for approval. It is believed that the benefits of granting
prescription rights to psychologist are that it would improve mental health service, affordability,
accessibility and effectiveness of mental health treatment. However, giving psychologist the
prescription right could lead to many negative factors such as psychologist's lack of appropriate
training for prescribing medication, changes in psychologist treatment for patient, and legal and
ethical issues. There are educational level and requirements that should be associated to professional
with rights to prescribe medication. If clinical psychologist were given the rights to prescribe

Holistic Integrative Community Grassroots Level Essay
d. After the diagnosis, the sessions and the place for treatment should be decided being sensitive to
the context of the individual, where he/she lives, and any challenges he/she may face to reach the
place or seek treatment. The various challenges should be discussed and the professional may decide
if he/she wants to include the family or any other protective factors in treatment. e. Finally, the
greatest of the individual's mental health needs would be follow up, accessibility and openness

Burnout : Mental Health Professionals
Blau, Tatum, and Goldberg (2013) indicated that burnout has been studied in various mental health
workers, including; case managers, psychologist, psychotherapist, social workers, rehabilitation
counselor, and intensive care workers. Due to the nature of the field and high involvement with the
others, mental health workers are likely to experience burnout (Sangganjanavanich & Balkin, 2010).
Multiple job duties can cause unnecessary stress within the work environment when daily task is not
managed properly among mental health professionals. In a survey completed by the American
Counseling Association (ACA) 75.7% of mental health professionals that colleagues coping with
burnout are significant threat to the profession of counseling (Puig, Baggs, Mixon, Park, Kim, &

burnout (Puig, Baggs, Mixon, Park, Kim & Lee, 2011).
Craig and Sprang (2010) indicate that mental health professionals that provide therapy services are
faced with daily life adversities that other professionals do not have to encounter. Moreover, other
professionals only witness these adversities through television and film (Craig & Sprang, 2010).
Burnout has been studied in marriage and family therapist, professional counselors, and school

Why Psychology Is Important For Mental Health Professionals
The Importance Understanding the History of Psychology
Psychology is an ever evolving field of study that is truly just in its infancy. Although tremendous
strides have been made in our understanding of behavior, cognitions, emotions and brain functions,
it has only been in the last 130 years that psychology has been studied as a science (Goodwin, 2015,
p. 4). It is important for mental health professionals to understand the history and evolution of

When we have access to the personal lives and the histories of earlier psychologists who have
contributed so much to the field, it is like we have been given complex case studies with rich data
detailing the inner–workings of their minds, which is invaluable.
Knowledge of the history of psychology increases our effectiveness as psychologists as we are able
analyze and learn from the mistakes made by psychologists who have come before us. We are also
able to reap the benefits of their work for ourselves and our clients, as well as future generations as
our clinical work and research in the field continue to grow and evolve.
We are fortunate to live in a time when resources are readily available for scientific research and
advances in technology are allowing us to learn about the brain at increasingly rapid rates.
Organizations such as the US National Institute of Mental Health have been established to transform
our understanding and treatment of mental disorders (Callie, 2015). While the establishment of
organizations to support research is not new, researchers today are able to study the neural activity
of the brains of people diagnosed with different mental health disorders which is much more
extensive research than we have been able to do at any point in history.
Researchers today are pioneers in their fields, just as the forefathers of psychology were in their
respective times. Understanding the processes

Essay on Week 5 Psy 480
Psy/480 Week 5 portion 1: Prescription Privileges Some of the current changes that can be seen in
regards to prescription privileges include changes in the ways that physicians and mental health
professionals are able to prescribe medications to their patients. According to Brenda Smith of the
APA (2012), currently patients receive their medications for psychological conditions by a physician
usually without having been evaluated by a mental health practitioner according to the CDC. The
trend includes individuals to visit their general health practitioners in order to receive psychotropic
medications such as antidepressants and anxiolytics. The problem with individuals receiving these

Morals, Values, And Ethics
Morals, values, and ethics are conditions which represent a person character, view of their society,
and culture. Morals and ethics are two principles that are similar in that it includes how decision are
made either good or bad (Remley & Herlihy, 2016). As a future, mental health professional, it is
essential to have sound judgement when making decisions that will ultimately impact clients. We
will review morals, ethics from my perspective.
Influence
Being raised to have strong faith, courage, honesty and integrity were some of the many values
taught. Always make the right decisions and choices in any problem or circumstance. Our household
provided compassion, love, care, kindness, and correction. Having integrity taught me to always do
what was right, because I believed it was right, and not from a place of distress. There is a saying
"treat others how you would want to be treated", this was a major part in my family upbringing.
Being raised in an environment where respecting someone privacy, not interrupting a conversation,
and lending a helping hand helped me to become a responsible person in life. Having self–
awareness, helps to know who I am, when it comes to being bias, convictions and making the right
decisions. There will be times when doing what is right seem uncomfortable. However, the mental
health profession allows me to act as an advocate for helping others recover. Which is why, it is
important for me to do the right thing to ensure a client is safe. My

Mental Health Couseling Programs
Mental health counseling programs are designed to prepare individuals/students to help clients with
conflicts, personal problems, or emotional predicaments. Mental Health counseling has become a
wide area of study that is highly recommended to those who are unbalanced and in need of support.
Effective clinical mental health counselors acknowledge the differences amongst people and seek to
improve their ability to work with diverse people (Gladding el at., 2010). This is very important,
especially for counselors to be culturally diverse and to develop multicultural counseling
competencies to be effective. The License Professional Counselor role is to provide an environment
of self–examination by assisting clients with therapy and therapeutic alliance to support the process
of healing. They analyze problems from different angles to provide solutions, by using method to set
the stage for change. They must provide a non–judgmental environment so that the client feel
respected, and of value to openly discuss life events, behaviors, feeling, and thoughts. The
Professional Counselor's role is to create this climate for the clients to examine their emotions to
arrive at solutions that is best for the clients. The professional's assignment is to assist the
individuals in finding solutions that are most corresponding with their own values, not to persuade
the clients by imposing their values on the client. According to Gladding and Newsome (2010),

important to me that I have the necessary training and knowledge in multicultural competence

Mental Health Professionals
After reading the case study, it has cast doubt in the reader's mind about mental health professionals.
Are they really helping the mentally ill or are they just doing a job for financial gain? The mental
health professionals in those institutions did not recognize that these patients were not mentally ill;
but the mentally ill residents observed that they were all sane. This example is the reason why
excuses have no place in medicine, and that most mental health professionals do not give an in–
depth evaluation of a person or they just look for symptoms that are easily recognizable to suit given
disorder. Mental health professionals should provide evidence for detecting or diagnosing a mental
illness because mentally illness individuals often have several mental illnesses that co–occur which
makes it very hard for medical professionals to diagnosed.

For example, in some cultures, if a person claims to be hearing voices they may be regarded as

we would suspect that they have a serious mental disorder. The consequences of mistakes made by
psychiatric diagnosis are that many conditions are believed to be permanent, so once an individual
receives a diagnosis, it can be difficult for them to be regarded as well again. For example, most
people believe that a person who has had a schizophrenic episode (they claimed to hear voices or
they reported delusions) will inevitably have further relapses. The truth is that about 25 percent of

Depression Is A Serious Condition
According to brain and behavior research foundation (BBRF), Depression is a serious condition that
negatively affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. In contrast to normal sadness, clinical
depression is persistent, often interferes with a person's ability to experience or anticipate pleasure,
and significantly interferes with functioning in daily life. Untreated, symptoms can last for weeks,
months, or years; and if inadequately treated, depression can lead to significant impairment, other
health–related issues, and in rare cases, suicide. Some of the symptoms include; depressed mood
most of the day, nearly every day, markedly diminished interest or pleasure in activities most of the
day, nearly every day, changes in appetite that result in weight losses or gains unrelated to dieting,
Changes in sleeping patterns, Loss of energy or increased fatigue, restlessness or irritability, feelings
of anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, or hopelessness, inappropriate guilt, difficulty
thinking, concentrating, or making decisions and thoughts of death or attempts at suicide ((BBRF,
2015). Most patients with depression first present in a primary care setting. A lot of them remain
undiagnosed and untreated due to reasons associated with the illness itself or with structural factors
in the health care system. Detecting patients with mental health problem such as depression in
primary care setting is challenging. Therefore, various screening questions have been

respect the obligations of other organizations and institutions. They treat other professionals with
the same respect as they do with clients. Counselors work with others whenever necessary in
cooperation to benefit the welfare of clients. When counselors are not competent in an area, they
refer clients to a professional who has the competency to serve. When counselors have knowledge
of incompetency of another professional they are obligated to inform the state licensing board or

gives the client the ability to write down why they are seeking help without having to look for the
answer within the other areas of the packet. This also allows the mental health professional to

This intake form has many questions that are important to understanding the whole person. As
highlighted previously, the intake form has several questions across all three dimensions that
enables a mental health professional to consider that client's life and where areas of challenge are. I
particularly like the area that discusses past trauma, relationship status with parents, and spirituality.
I have not seen this on many intake forms, but I do think that they are all important questions to ask.
Questions related to childhood can give insight into the client's emotional well–being over a
duration of many years and questions related to spirituality assist in acknowledging where the
client's support systems are. Trauma can also have a significant impact on emotional well–being, so
it is important for mental health professionals to know if the individual has gone through significant
life events. In addition, spirituality can be used to help with coping mechanisms in many cases.
Are the questions reading level appropriate for the clients? It is my opinion that the Intake Form has
a reading level that is appropriate for the clients. The questions are general in nature and do not go
into specifics with regards to treatment or what may be confusing or misunderstood. Many of the

The Mental Health Care Of Syrian Refugees
The Mental Health Care of Syrian Refugees and the Improvements Needed The Syrian Civil War
has left millions of Syrian civilians as refugees in foreign lands. Most of these Syrian refugees have
seen or experienced horrific acts of violence because of the war. Many of these refugees are now
experiencing mental health problems because of the things they have experienced. Most of them
have never seen a mental health care professional and the few that have are few and far between.
Until recently the mental health care of these individuals was not considered, but has recently come
to the forefront of the medical field's attention. The mental health care of Syrian refugees is
improving but still has a long way to go. There are many strides being made to treat and care for
their mental health but many still have not received treatment, and this must become a priority.
Improvements Being Made Though their mental health care has not been considered a priority to
very many until recently, some strides have already been to help Syrian refugees. There are several
obstacles being faced by mental health professionals to help the refugees. Many of these obstacles
are cultural, but can dissolve if professionals that understand Syrian culture are involved (Acarturk
et al., 2015, Cultural Sensitivity Section, par. 1). The mental health professionals involved also need
to not only understand Syrian culture but take their values into consideration. A successful group

Ethics in the Mental Health Profession Essay
In the mental health profession of counseling, therapy, psychology, psychiatric and social services
ethical dilemmas are faced primarily on a daily basis. Being that mental health professionals are
working with clients who are often fragile and vulnerable, they must develop an intense awareness
of ethical issues. On the other hand, mental health professionals would never intentionally harm
their clients, students or colleagues and others whom they work with. Unfortunately, good intentions
are not enough to ensure that wrong doings will not occur and mental health professionals have no
choice but to make ethically determined decisions. Depending upon the experience and expertise of
the professional determines the outcome of the ethical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, not all outside relationships with a psychologist will create a considerable

confidentially, or make you feel very uncomfortable when you meet your psychologist in a public
setting. The psychologist is still held by confidentiality, and cannot reveal that you are his or her
client. Yet, a client can violate any boundaries without any scolding. For that reason, in the mental
health professions, dual relationships are generally not recommended. Thus, if your friend who's a
psychologist assumes two more roles consecutively with a client, this is considered a dual
relationship. For instance, if an individual held a role as a counselor and business partner, or client
and friend, this is a considered a dual relationship. Common examples of dual relationships include:

Ethical Issues In Counseling
To start, the relationship between a counselor and a client is based on trust, therefore being the
cornerstone of the counseling relationship. Professionals in many situations deal with issues that
have ethical and legal ramifications. The communication amongst the two is to occur freely, the
client must have privacy, and the information shared during the session is to be private (Newsome,
Gladding, Pg. 66). The ethically and legally job of the counselor is to maintain and respect
professional boundaries. Boundaries help provided structure to the professional relationship and the
vulnerability of the client. Another area clinical mental health professionals practice is the
boundaries of their competence. Based on the counselor's education, training, supervised
experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate experience, counselors will
achieve the knowledge in personal awareness, sensitivity, and skills to working with a diverse
population (Newsome, Gladding, Pg. 66). The wide–spread of the availability of the internet since

Professional Advocacy In Clinical Mental Health
The role of Professional advocacy according to Chapter 5: Professional and Social Advocacy in
Clinical Mental Health is to ensure that people have enough information to ensure that they can
make decisions and choices for themselves. It also refers to action taken to advance the profession
of counseling in general and the clinical a mental health profession specifically. Both professional
advocacy and client/social advocacy are essential to mental health counseling, to ensure that every
individual has an opportunity to resources such as health care and employment, and to achieve
optimal mental health (Chang, Crethar, & Ratts, 2010). Advocating for the elderly who experience
being released from prison can be very challenging but rewarding. My job as a professional
advocacy is to make sure clients feel that no matter what anybody else says that there is somebody
who is by their side and is going to vouch for them and speak up for them. Scenario Tommy is the

The Role and the Relationship Between Professionals and Lay Persons in the Process of Civil
Admissions Under the Mental Health Act 1983
The process of civil admissions under the Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983 may be viewed by civil
libertarians as a violation of the individual's freedom. The state's justification for such a 'violation' is
for the need to protect the individual concerned or to protect others in society. The Mental Health
Act 1983 does not explicitly require that an individual would have to be 'dangerous' in order for that
individual to be admitted to hospital. However, there has developed a 'dangerousness' criterion,
(whether the individual would be considered to be 'dangerous' to himself ... Show more content on

Section 3 allows for 'treatment' of a patient who is suffering from one of the specific categories of
disorder,[4] which is deemed 'necessary' for the patient's health or safety or for the protection of
others.
The process of civil confinement requires an application for admission to the hospital from either an
'approved social worker' (ASW) or the 'nearest relative' (NR) of the individual who is to be
confined. The applications must also be certified by two medical recommendations (one medical
recommendation will suffice in an emergency under s.4). Section 26 (1) of the MHA 1983 provides
the legal definition of the NR. The relatives of whole blood are usually preferred over relatives of
half–blood. In the event that there are two relatives of the relevant class, the elder of the two will
usually be chosen as the 'nearest relative'.
Section 114 (2) of the MHA 1983 requires that ASWs should have 'appropriate competence in
dealing with persons who are suffering from mental disorder.' An ASW must also undergo twelve
weeks of training and must also attend regular refresher courses. This is in contrast with the NR,
who does not require any specialist training or knowledge. It is also a divergence from the duties of
the Mental Welfare Officer under the Mental Health Act 1959, who also did not require any
specialist training to undertake their

Eating Disorder Treatment
The topic of which I would like to further discuss in my paper is that of eating disorders. The
question I would like to explore is: Should mental health and associated health professionals be
allowed to remove a patient's autonomy and control their diet as intervention for an eating disorder?
I think that this is a very debatable topic because both sides are equally important to the patient. It is
important that the patient be able to make their own decisions but it is equally important that the
patient be safe and their health protected. Both sides are also equally harmful if not considered for
the patient. Is it ethical to control a patient's diet in treatment of an eating disorder? Proponents
answer yes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clarify Concepts
The major eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. There are also
many other eating disorders that are not always specified for people that do not fall into the other
categories. When treating these illnesses along with any other, medical staff work to protect a
patient's autonomy which is their right to make decisions about their own care. The problem is that
eating disorders are one of the hardest conditions to treat (Treasure, 2015). It has also been shown
that over half of all cases develop into severe illness for the patient and profoundly impact their
physical and mental health (Treasure, 2015).
Identify Possible Solutions to the Problem There are several possible solutions. Medical staff could
take dietary choices away from the patient and control their diet in order to help them recover from
their eating disorder. Another option is for medical staff to counsel the patient on dietary decisions
but allow the patient to remain in control of their choices. Yet another option may be a compromise
between the two, to control the diet of the patient while still allowing them to make decisions.
Gather Information
Professionals are trying to decide the best ways to treat eating disorders. A major complication in
the proposed treatment plan is ethics. A potential solution may be to take control away from the
patient but,

Ethical Issues In Forensic Psychology

  • 1. Ethical Issues In Forensic Psychology What are the potential ethical issues raised in this scenario? Be sure to support your response with the appropriate ethical guidelines from the APA's Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology. What action would you take and why? Be sure to describe your process of ethical decision making. Given the scenario, there are different ethical issues which might arise. For example, given that the mental health professional has been retired for ten years, it begs the question of if she is still licensed to practice. There would be no problem if the mental health professional were licensed, but it would be unethical and unlawful for the professional to carry out any specialized psychosomatic work. ... That would result in ethical issues relating to multiple relationships. According to APA (2004), "standard 3.05 recognizes that psychologists are sometimes required to serve in more than one role in judicial or administrative proceedings, and so cannot always avoid or fully resolve a potentially harmful multiple relationship." A multiple relationship occurs when a psychologist is in a professional role with a person and "at the same time is in another role with the same person, at the same time is in a relationship with a person closely associated with or related to the person with whom the psychologist has the professional relationship." (Dr. Stephen Behnke, 2008). The relationship exhibited by the mental health professional poses a conflict of interest as described in ethical standard 3.06 Conflict of Interest. • 2. The Mission Of The American Counseling Association ( Aca ) The mission of the American Counseling Association (ACA) According to the Counseling.org website, the ACA's mission is to "enhance the quality of life in society by promoting the development of professional counselors, advancing the counseling profession, and using the profession and practice of counseling to promote respect for human dignity and diversity". I interpret this as a wide array of assurances, through continuing education and enlightenment of counselors, and then the quality of services is improved upon by dedication. The ACA started out as the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), and it originated because so many professional counselors were dissatisfied that they did not fit to the subscription of contemporary styles of mental health professionals (Palmo, Weikel & Borsos, 2006). The advancement of the counseling profession began when the term professional counselor was recognized as a profession. It continues to grow through research and theory developments that have proven to positively impact the lives of the client professional counselors see. How the ACA defines professional counseling The ACA defines professional counseling as a "professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals" (ACA, 2010). This is not the first recognized definition of professional counseling; however, as I understand it in its current state, this is a relationship ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Substance Abuse Personal Statement I have recently graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in Addictive Disorders and Recovery Studies. I have also recently been accepted to University of Houston – Clear Lake's Clinical Psychology Master's program. My main areas of interest are mental health issues and substance abuse issues. Therefore, my educational and career goal is to be able to help people with these types of issues. The comorbidity of drug addiction and other mental disorders has been a primary research topic for decades in the psychology community. This trend is evident by the plethora of studies conducted regarding a variety of combinations of substance addictions and mental disorders. Mental Health Professionals: A Case Study Mental healthcare professionals need to uphold their responsibilities to tell the truth, respect confidentiality, function as an advocate, and accept accountability for providing proper mental health care to their patients. If I were to have a mental health professional tell me that my depression would go away on its own and break confidentiality by telling the receptionist about my problems. I would not trust them and I might even hate them as my depression got worse. • 9. Roles And Mission Of The Counselor Roles and Mission The counselor may play various roles, at several levels, i.e. the counselor may be an educator to the client, the counselor may be a type of mentor offering advice and guidance on specific issues, and also engage in other roles. The counselor may also act as an advocate for a client whose cultural background is significantly different than the environment he or she may currently be in, by ensuring that the client is treated with the same respect and given the same opportunities as others. The client's social and cultural context is significant because it reveals to the counselor who the client is, where the client is from, the traditions and values of the client, among many other things. With this knowledge of the client, the counselor is able to obtain specialized interventions which will assist them with the issues they are encountering therefore their situations and themselves can improve. An advocate is an individual who acts as intermediary to foster change to unlimited access, enhance awareness to inequalities, and promote accountability on the individual, communal, and statewide level. Within the counseling field, most counselors, although they may not be aware, act as social justice advocates on the behalf of their clients when linking or representing the client in different settings. Giving information is one of the first steps of therapeutic process (Goss & Moretti, 2011). This is legally supported by the mental health act. According to s.11 of the Mental Health Act 2014 (Vic), a patient with mental illness must be involved in decisions about their treatment, and the mental health nurse must respect his preferences. Therefore, the fact that Ben is a compulsory client must not hinder his right to an informed consent. Hence, the nurse must ensure he has an understanding about why he is on compulsory treatment (Lukens, Solomon, & Sorenson, 2013). The nurse should ensure communication to know his opinion about the compulsory treatment, followed by education and reassurance (Goss & Moretti, 2011). Include family in the care When caring for a compulsory client, involving the patient's family members is necessary. This may improve Ben's compliance and enhance his involvement in the management, since this may encourage him to share and seek information (Goss & Moretti, 2011). After the diagnosis, the sessions and the place for treatment should be decided being sensitive to the context of the individual, where he/she lives, and any challenges he/she may face to reach the place or seek treatment. The various challenges should be discussed and the professional may decide if he/she wants to include the family or any other protective factors in treatment. e.
