9. QU YUAN: POLITICIAN AND
LATER, POET
Qu Yuan was a high-ranking official (dà guān - 大官
) during the warring states period (475-221 B.C.).
He was removed from his position and he became a
poet.
10. QU YUAN WANDERS
Unhappy and
disrespected, he left one
day to write a poem (shī
) about his life and hopes
while wandering
alongside a river. He
was never seen again
and was presumed to
have committed suicide
(zì shā - 自殺 ).
11. THROWING DUMPLINGS
His followers decided to throw sticky rice, wrapped
in leaves, into the river so that the fish would not
consume his body and soul.

Qu Yuan told the
fisherman to wrap
the rice in leaves
and to tie the
leaves with white
string (xiàn – 线 )
14. Cleaning the house
The dragon boat festival is also
a cleaning festival.
It is traditional for people
to clean their houses on this
day.
These things are
thought to prevent rot
and kill bacteria to
stop the spread of
diseases.
15. On Dragon Boat Festival, parents
also need to dress their children
up with a perfume pouch. They
first sew little bags with
colorful silk cloth, then fill the bags with perfumes
or herbal medicines
and finally string them with silk threads. The
perfume pouch will be hung around the neck or
tied to the front of a garment ( 服 裝 ) as an
ornament. They are said to be
able to ward off evil.
