2. Micro Analysis
Camera
• There are extreme close ups; e.g. Of the hands sewing a book. This creates a raw intimate
feeling for the audience. It also creates tension, and slight fear as the person is kept a mystery.
• Extreme low and high angles – revel little as to what is going on, and confuse the audience,
and leaves them guessing. Also shows that nothing is as it appears.
• Panning shot at the end of the books – makes the story flow outwards away from the table
where the rest of the title sequence was set.
• The slow paced page turning shot makes the audience hold their breath in anticipation,
creating tension.
Editing
• There is a wide range of editing techniques used in this short title sequence; jump cuts quicken
the pace and make and create tension, fading one shot into the next creates a smooth
transition and a flow, morphing shots together creates a trippy vibe that's full of mystery.
• The complex editing style builds most of the tension, as well as creating a sense of paranoia in
the audience.
• The titles appear shaky and jerk around the frame of the shot. This adds to the mystic auro of
the sequence.
• The overall quick pace of the sequence doesn't’t give enough time for the audience to
decipher what's going on on screen, thus adding to the obscurity
• special effects : the carvings over the footage, dragging of footage, laying shots together
3. Micro Analysis
Mise-En-Scene
• Props: scissors, notebook, pen , sewing needle and thread, razor blade, knife, tweezers, human
hair, photo developing kit, gory/violent photos
• Location: kept a mystery. The movie could be set anywhere, doesn't’t establish location( breaks
a convention). The title sequence seemed to be set in a more private and intimate location,
such as a house or a lair.
• Lighting: dark and ambiguous. Only illuminating parts of the screen at a time. Flashes of red
lighting makes the atmosphere grow more violent.
• Lighting is also used to help transition the shots – by fading to black, or using a flash of light.
Sound
• Dramatic opening sound, that grabs the audience’s attention.
• Eerie background noises, that are hard to decipher, and sound more like ghosts of a sound.
• Sound effects include: door opening and squeaking, inhumanly screams, static
• Intense low music, with a deep base, playing at a fast pace. It speeds up and intensifies as the
sequence progresses.
• The soundscape is dramatic, and tense building. It made me feel uneasy and unsafe, like
something terrible was about to happen.
• The soundscape finishes with the same dramatic sound as at the start.
