Even though very popular in signal and image processing, wavelet transforms (WT) have some
limitations: they do not completely fit to natural images, because they are very effective in represent-
ing smooth signals with pointwise discontinuities, but fail in representing discontinuities along regular
curves, as image contours. Moreover, the filters used in WT risk to oversmooth important signal fea-
tures (discontinuities and singularities) and this could be a problem in a large number of applications.
These observations have led researchers to look for new approaches for transformation, introducing non-
separable transforms and geometric-based techniques [1]. A promising approach to find new and more
efficient transforms consists in using lifting schemes to build content-adaptive wavelet decompositions
[2]. In particular, Heijmans, Piella and Pesquet-Popescu [3] have proposed an adaptive lifting scheme
(ALS) using seminorms of local features of images in order to build a decision map that determines the
lifting update step, while the prediction step is fixed. One of the most interesting features of this adaptive
transform is that it does not require the transmission of side information, since the decision on the update
step can be made with the information available at the synthesis stage.
However, the adaptive lifting schemes can result in strongly non-isometric transforms. This can be
a major limitation, since all most successful coding techniques rely on the distortion estimation in the
transform domain, either explicitly, like the EBCOT algorithm (at the basis of the JPEG2000 standard),
or implicitly, like popular zero-tree based algorithms (SPIHT, EZW).
From these observations we conclude that, in order to efficiently use the ALS for image compression,
for example by incorporating it into a JPEG2000 coder, we need to correctly estimate the distortion
directly from the transform coefficients. Usevitch showed how this can be done for generic linear wavelet
filter banks [4]. We extend this approach to the inherently non linear ALS. This is possible because the
non-linearity in this case can be expressed as a linear time-varying system. In particular, once we have
found the equivalent polyphase representation of the ALS, the distortion D in the original domain is
related to the distortion Dij in the wavelet subband yij by the relation: D = ij wij Dij , where the
index i represents the decomposition level, the index j the channel, and the weights wij can be computed
as average column norm of the synthesis polyphase matrices. These matrices in turns are found directly
by using the ALS synthesis equations:

                          x(2k + 1) = y01 (k) + γ(n)y00 (k − n) (1)
                                                  n∈Z

                          x(2k) = αd(k) y00 (k) − βd(k) (n)x(2k + 1 − 2n), (2)
                                                    n∈Z

where d(k) is a decision map stating how sample k must be processed. We found that for one decompo-

sition level, the weights are expressed as: w0j = h=0 N w0j . The weight of each subband depends
only on the relative frequency of the various symbols in the decision map. For more decomposition levels
the weights can be computed easily, but there not exist a simple interpretation of them.
A first experiment was conducted in order to validate the weights computed with the proposed
method. We computed the energy of an uncorrelated error signal with and without our weights, and
we compared this estimation with the actual energy. The per cent relative errors of the two estimations
are reported in Tab. 1. The proposed weights allow a very good energy estimation, while without using
them the energy estimation is affected by a large error. This affects the compression performances as
well. We used a simple compression scheme with three different ALS, and with a rate allocation algo-
rithm driven by the distortion estimation [5]. Using the correct weights can improve RD performances
up to more than 3dB, as shown in Tab. 2, irrespective of the particular ALS used.

Moreover, the filters used in WT risk to oversmooth important signal fea- tures (discontinuities and singularities) and this could be a problem in a large number of applications. These observations have led researchers to look for new approaches for transformation, introducing non- separable transforms and geometric-based techniques [1]. A promising approach to find new and more efficient transforms consists in using lifting schemes to build content-adaptive wavelet decompositions [2]. In particular, Heijmans, Piella and Pesquet-Popescu [3] have proposed an adaptive lifting scheme (ALS) using seminorms of local features of images in order to build a decision map that determines the lifting update step, while the prediction step is fixed. One of the most interesting features of this adaptive transform is that it does not require the transmission of side information, since the decision on the update step can be made with the information available at the synthesis stage. However, the adaptive lifting schemes can result in strongly non-isometric transforms. This can be a major limitation, since all most successful coding techniques rely on the distortion estimation in the transform domain, either explicitly, like the EBCOT algorithm (at the basis of the JPEG2000 standard), or implicitly, like popular zero-tree based algorithms (SPIHT, EZW). From these observations we conclude that, in order to efficiently use the ALS for image compression, for example by incorporating it into a JPEG2000 coder, we need to correctly estimate the distortion directly from the transform coefficients. Usevitch showed how this can be done for generic linear wavelet filter banks [4]. We extend this approach to the inherently non linear ALS. This is possible because the non-linearity in this case can be expressed as a linear time-varying system. In particular, once we have found the equivalent polyphase representation of the ALS, the distortion D in the original domain is related to the distortion Dij in the wavelet subband yij by the relation: D = ij wij Dij , where the index i represents the decomposition level, the index j the channel, and the weights wij can be computed as average column norm of the synthesis polyphase matrices. These matrices in turns are found directly by using the ALS synthesis equations: x(2k + 1) = y01 (k) + γ(n)y00 (k − n) (1) n∈Z x(2k) = αd(k) y00 (k) − βd(k) (n)x(2k + 1 − 2n), (2) n∈Z

We found that for one decompo- D−1 2Nh (h) sition level, the weights are expressed as: w0j = h=0 N w0j . The weight of each subband depends only on the relative frequency of the various symbols in the decision map. For more decomposition levels the weights can be computed easily, but there not exist a simple interpretation of them. A first experiment was conducted in order to validate the weights computed with the proposed method. We computed the energy of an uncorrelated error signal with and without our weights, and we compared this estimation with the actual energy. The per cent relative errors of the two estimations are reported in Tab. 1. The proposed weights allow a very good energy estimation, while without using them the energy estimation is affected by a large error. This affects the compression performances as well. We used a simple compression scheme with three different ALS, and with a rate allocation algo- rithm driven by the distortion estimation [5]. Using the correct weights can improve RD performances up to more than 3dB, as shown in Tab. 2, irrespective of the particular ALS used. References [1] E. J. Cand` s and D. L.
