MAKING SUGGESTIONS AND GIVING ADVICE
 These are some of the suggestions the
receptionist made:
 If you like football, you should definitely visit
Boca Club Football Stadium.
 If it rains, the best thing to do is to go to a
museum.
 Why don’t you go to the Malba Art Museum?
MAKING SUGGESTIONS AND GIVING ADVICE
 Giving advice and making suggestions are
two different language functions, but in real life
they often go together.
WHAT IS A SUGGESTION?
 A suggestion is an idea about what we or
other people could do.
We can suggest tourists what to do, we can
give them ideas about where to go or how to
spend their time.
For example, the receptionist said: Why
don’t you go to Malba Art Museum?
WHAT IS “GIVING ADVICE”?
 Giving advice involves telling another person
what they should do.
 We give advice when we try to help
someone. For example, the receptionist said:
If you like football you should definitely
visit the Boca Club Football Stadium.
SOME EXAMPLES
 It’s going to rain tomorrow. It might be a good
idea to go to a shopping centre. I don’t think
you should go to the zoo.
 If you need some walking boots, you can go to
Alto Palermo shopping centre.
 What do you think I should do if it’s sunny
this weekend?
 If it’s sunny, the best thing to do is to go
Palermo.

TOURISM DEPENDS ON THE WEATHER!
 If it’s hot you could use our swimming pool.
 Well, if it’s rainy you won’t be able to go on a boat
ride. So why don’t you visit the Fine Arts Museum?
 If it’s sunny the best thing to do is to go
sightseeing.
 While you’re here why don’t you try our delicious
meat?
